Gapped 1/9 Magnetization Plateau in the Anisotropic Kagome Antiferromagnet Y-kapellasite

Fractional magnetization plateaus provide a sensitive probe of many-body spin states in frustrated quantum magnets, yet their microscopic origin in kagome antiferromagnets remains unresolved. This is particularly true of the mysterious $1/9$ plateau, which is predicted by theory but infrequently observed in experiment. Here, we investigate this problem in the $S = 1/2$ anisotropic kagome antiferromagnet Y-kapellasite, Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$, using pulsed-field magnetization measurements on single crystals and high-field $^{35}$Cl NMR. We identify a hierarchy of field-induced fractional features, including $1/3$ and $1/9$ plateaus, as well as a weaker low-field feature. Analysis of the NMR spectra and the magnetic susceptibility across the $1/9$ plateau demonstrate that it is accompanied by an ordered local spin configuration, a strong suppression of low-energy spin fluctuations and activated behavior, consistent with a gapped fractional state. These features differ from those in the only other material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-y}$(OH)$_y$] in which this plateau is observed, implying a surprising robustness of the $1/9$ state to the details of the underlying magnetism.

Emergence of a Fluctuating Ground State in Y-kapellasite under Pressure

Y-kapellasite (Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$), which hosts an original anisotropic kagome sublattice, is a promising candidate for studying elusive and complex correlated physics. It exhibits a theoretically predicted in-plane $(1/3, 1/3)$ magnetic order [1] but its magnetic interaction values place it close to a phase boundary to a spin liquid state [2]. Our $μ$SR measurements under hydrostatic pressure demonstrate the complete suppression of static magnetism in favor of a fully dynamical ground state at $2.3$~GPa. Complementary high-pressure x-ray and optical phonon measurements reveal a gradual reduction of the kagome anisotropy, enhancing magnetic frustration without structural transitions. Our results establish Y-kapellasite as a rare clean kagome model in which long-range order is suppressed by pressure-tuned frustration, the first fingerprint for the realization of a quantum spin liquid without strong disorder.

Planar parallel phonon Hall effect and local symmetry breaking

Y-kapellasite [Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8] is a frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator which remains paramagnetic down to a remarkably low Néel temperature of about 2 K. Having studied this material in the paramagnetic regime, in which phonons are the only possible heat carriers, we report the observation of a planar parallel thermal Hall effect coming unambiguously from phonons. This is an advantage over the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidates α-RuCl3 and Na2Co2TeO6 where in principle other heat carriers can be involved [1-4]. As it happens, Y-kapellasite undergoes a structural transition attributed to the positional freezing of a hydrogen atom below about 33 K. Above this transition, the global crystal symmetry forbids the existence of a planar parallel signal - the same situation as in Na2Co2TeO6 and cuprates [3-5]. This points to the notion of a local symmetry breaking at the root of the phonon Hall effect. In this context, the advantage of Y-kapellasite over Na2Co2TeO6 (with high levels of Na disorder and stacking faults) and cuprates (with high levels of disorder coming from dopants and oxygen vacancies) is its clean structure, where the only degree of freedom available for local symmetry breaking is this hydrogen atom randomly distributed over six equivalent positions above 33 K. This provides a specific and concrete case for the general idea of local symmetry breaking leading to the phonon Hall effect in a wide range of insulators.

Multi-Center Magnon Excitations Open the Entire Brillouin Zone to Terahertz Magnetometry of Quantum Magnets

Due to the small photon momentum, optical spectroscopy commonly probes magnetic excitations only at the center of the Brillouin zone; however, there are ways to override this restriction. In the case of the distorted kagome quantum magnet Y-kapellasite, Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$, under scrutiny here, the magnon density of states can be accessed over the entire Brillouin zone through three-center magnon excitations. This mechanism is aided by the three different magnetic sublattices and strong short-range correlations in the distorted kagome lattice. The results of THz time-domain experiments agree remarkably well with linear spin-wave theory. Relaxing the conventional zone-center constraint of photons gives a new aspect to probe magnetism in matter.

Local study of the insulating quantum kagome antiferromagnets YCu3(OH)6OxCl3-x (x=0,1/3)

The quantum kagome antiferromagnets YCu3(OH)6OxCl3-x (x=0,1/3) are produced using a unified solid state synthesis route for polycrystalline samples. From structural refinements based on neutron diffraction data, we clarify the structure of the Y3Cu9(OH)18OCl8 (x=1/3) compound and provide a revised chemical formula. We use muon spin relaxation, as a local probe of magnetism, to investigate the exotic low temperature properties in the two compounds. In agreement with the low temperature neutron diffraction data, we find no evidence for long range ordering in both materials but they exhibit distinct ground states: while disordered static magnetism develops in the x=0 compound, we conclude on the stabilization of a quantum spin liquid in the x=1/3 one, since the local fields remain fully dynamical. Our findings are in contrast to previous reports based on thermodynamical measurements only. We then discuss their origin on the basis of structural details and specific heat measurements. In particular, the x=1/3 compound appears to realize an original spatially anisotropic kagome model.

Kagome quantum spin systems in the atacamite family

We present the hydrothermal synthesis, as well as structural and chemical analysis of single crystals on the compounds EuCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$, Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ and haydeeite, MgCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ all arising from the atacamite family. Magnetic and specific-heat measurements down to 1.8 K are carried out for these systems. EuCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$ has a frustrated antiferromagnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ground state with order at 15 K, a strong anisotropy and increased magnetization from Van Vleck paramagnetic Eu$^{3+}$ contributions. ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ reveals antiferromagnetic order at 9 K and measurements on haydeeite single crystals confirm the ferromagnetic order at 4.2 K with the easy axis within the kagome plane. These results prove that the atacamite family presents a broad class of materials with interesting magnetic ground states.
