Equilibria for the Vlasov-Maxwell system related to plasma confinement

By working in a setting of azimuthal and $z$-directional invariance, we reduce the existence of electrically neutral, magnetically driven, equilibria of the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell (VM) equation to a second-order ODEs in the radial variable. In contrast to previous works, we consider specific situations that correspond physically to $z$-pinch, $θ$-pinch, and screw-pinch equilibria in plasma physics. Semi-explicit solutions in these situations are provided.

Stationary flows for viscous heat-conductive fluid in a perturbed half-space

We consider the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equation in a perturbed half space with an outflow boundary condition as well as the supersonic condition. This equation models a compressible viscous, heat-conductive, and Newtonian polytropic fluid. We show the unique existence of stationary solutions for the perturbed half-space. The stationary solution constructed in this paper depends on all directions and has multidirectional flow. We also prove the asymptotic stability of this stationary solution.

Continuous Family of Equilibria of the 3D Axisymmetric Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell System

We consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system (RVM) on a general axisymmetric spatial domain with perfect conducting boundary which reflects particles specularly, assuming axisymmetry in the problem. We construct continuous global parametric solution sets for the time-independent RVM. The solutions in these sets have arbitrarily large electromagnetic field and the particle density functions have the form $f^\pm = μ^\pm (e^\pm (x, v), p^\pm (x, v))$, where $e^\pm$ and $p^\pm$ are the particle energy and angular momentum, respectively. In particular, for a certain class of examples, we show that the spectral stability changes as the parameter varies from $0$ to $\infty$.

Local Well-posedness for the Kinetic MMT Model

The MMT equation was proposed by Majda, McLaughlin and Tabak as a model to study wave turbulence. We focus on the kinetic equation associated to this Hamiltonian system, which is believed to give a way to predict turbulent spectra. We clarify the formulation of the problem, and we develop the local well-posedness theory for this equation. Our analysis uncovers a surprising nonlinear smoothing phenomenon.

Traveling Waves of the Vlasov--Poisson System

We consider the Vlasov--Poisson system describing a two-species plasma with spatial dimension $1$ and the velocity variable in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solitary waves, shock waves, and wave trains of the system, respectively. To this end, we need to investigate the distribution of ions trapped by the electrostatic potential. Furthermore, we classify completely in all possible cases whether or not the traveling wave is unique. The uniqueness varies according to each traveling wave when we exclude the variant caused by translation. For the solitary wave, there are both cases that it is unique and nonunique. The shock wave is always unique. No wave train is unique.

On $1$d quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with a potential and symmetries

This paper is a continuation of a previous work Germain-Pusateri (2020) by the first two authors. We focus on $1$ dimensional quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with a potential, under some assumptions that are less general than Germain-Pusateri (2020), but allow us to present some simplifications in the proof of global existence with decay for small solutions. In particular, we can propagate a stronger control on a basic $L^2$-weighted type norm while providing some shorter and less technical proofs for some of the arguments.

Nonlinear Stability and Instability of Plasma Boundary Layers

We investigate the formation of a plasma boundary layer (sheath) by considering the Vlasov--Poisson system on a half-line with the completely absorbing boundary condition. In an earlier paper by the first two authors, the solvability of the stationary problem is studied. In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability and instability of these stationary solutions of the Vlasov--Poisson system.

Benjamin-Ono Soliton Dynamics in a slowly varying potential revisited

The Benjamin Ono equation with a slowly varying potential is $$ \text{(pBO)} \qquad u_t + (Hu_x-Vu + \tfrac12 u^2)_x=0 $$ with $V(x)=W(hx)$, $0< h \ll 1$, and $W\in C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R})$, and $H$ denotes the Hilbert transform. The soliton profile is $$Q_{a,c}(x) = cQ(c(x-a)) \,, \text{ where } Q(x) = \frac{4}{1+x^2}$$ and $a\in \mathbb{R}$, $c>0$ are parameters. For initial condition $u_0(x)$ to (pBO) close to $Q_{0,1}(x)$, it was shown in a previous work by Z. Zhang that the solution $u(x,t)$ to (pBO) remains close to $Q_{a(t),c(t)}(x)$ and approximate parameter dynamics for $(a,c)$ were provided, on a dynamically relevant time scale. In this paper, we prove exact $(a,c)$ parameter dynamics. This is achieved using the basic framework of the previous work by Z. Zhang but adding a local virial estimate for the linearization of (pBO) around the soliton. This is a local-in-space estimate averaged in time, often called a local smoothing estimate, showing that effectively the remainder function in the perturbation analysis is smaller near the soliton than globally in space. A weaker version of this estimate is proved in a paper by Kenig & Martel as part of a "linear Liouville" result, and we have adapted and extended their proof for our application.

Effective Dynamics of the Vector Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations on Large Domains

We consider the vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation posed on the box with periodic boundary conditions, and derive the continuous resonant (CR) equation that describes the effective dynamics for large box size and small data size over very large time-scales. Moreover, we investigate various properties of the continuous resonant equations, including the Hamiltonian structure and the well-posedness, etc..

Benjamin-Ono Soliton Dynamics in a Slowly Varying Potential

We consider the Benjamin-Ono equation with a slowly varying potential $u_t + (Hu_x-Vu + \tfrac12 u^2)_x=0$ with $V(x)=W(hx)$, $0< h \ll 1$, and $W\in C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R})$, and $H$ denotes the Hilbert transform. The soliton profile is $Q_{a,c}(x) = cQ(c(x-a))$, where $Q(x) = \frac{4}{1+x^2}$ and $a\in \mathbb{R}$, $c>0$ are parameters. For initial condition $u_0(x)$ to (pBO) close in $H_x^{1/2}$ to $Q_{0,1}(x)$, we show that the solution $u(x,t)$ to (pBO) remains close in $H_x^{1/2}$ to $Q_{a(t),c(t)}(x)$ and specify the $(a,c)$ parameter dynamics on an $O(h^{-1})$ time scale.

Magnetic confinement at a boundary approximates specular reflection

We conjecture that for a plasma in a spatial domain with a boundary, the specular reflection effect of the boundary can be approximated by a large magnetic confinement field in the near-boundary region. In this paper, we verify this conjecture for the 1.5D relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system (RVM) on a bounded domain $Ω= (0, 1)$ with an external confining magnetic field.

Boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a three-dimensional half-space

We consider the nonlinear boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a three-dimensional half-space by perturbing around a Maxwellian, under the assumption that the Mach number of the Maxwellian satisfies ${\cal M}_{\infty} < -1$. In preceding works, nonlinear boundary layers of the Boltzmann equation in a half-line are considered, with stationary solutions obtained and nonlinear stability confirmed. In this paper, we establish the unique existence of stationary solutions for the three-dimensional half-space model, and show that the stationary solution is asymptotic stable.

Stationary flows for compressible viscous fluid in a perturbed half-space

We consider the compressible Navier--Stokes equation in a perturbed half-space with an outflow boundary condition as well as the supersonic condition. For a half-space, it has been known that a certain planar stationary solution exist and it is time-asymptotically stable. The planar stationary solution is independent of the tangential directions and its velocities of the tangential directions are zero. In this paper, we show the unique existence of stationary solutions for the perturbed half-space. The feature of our work is that our stationary solution depends on all directions and has multidirectional flow. Furthermore, we also prove the asymptotic stability of this stationary solution.

Linear Stability Analysis of the Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell System in an Axisymmetric Domain

We consider the plasma confined in a general axisymmetric spatial domain with perfect conducting boundary which reflects particles specularly, and look at a certain class of equilibria, assuming axisymmetry in the problem. We prove a sharp criterion of spectral stability under these settings. Moreover, we provide several explicit families of stable/unstable equilibria using this criterion.

Focusing Solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson System

We study smooth, spherically-symmetric solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system and relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system in the plasma physical case. We construct solutions that initially possess arbitrarily small C^k norms for the charge densities and the electric fields, but attain arbitrarily large L^1 norms of them at some later time.
