A characterization of pseudo-Anosov orbit spaces via bifoliated planes

We characterize the actions on bifoliated planes that arise as orbits spaces of transitive pseudo-Anosov flows on orientable closed 3-manifold. We use branched covers, veering triangulations, and a new compactness criterion to extend previous work that handled the special case where the plane has no odd-prong singularities and the action preserves a leafwise orientation on the foliations.

Exotic codimension one Anosov flows

We construct Anosov flows in certain circle bundles over closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, producing counterexamples to a conjecture of Verjovsky. Some of these 4-manifolds admit infinitely many distinct Anosov flows up to orbit equivalence. The construction is made by using Cannon-Thurston maps associated to pseudo-Anosov quasigeodesic flows in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds.

Pseudo-Anosov flows and the geometry of Anosov-like group actions

We show that the action on its orbit space induced by a pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed $3$-manifold (and more general Anosov-like actions) can be seen as an isometric action on a Gromov-hyperbolic space. When the flow is not $\R$-covered, we show that this action admits elements that are weakly properly discontinuous and deduce that elements of $π_1(M)$ that do \emph{not} represent a periodic orbit of the flow are generic for any word metric coming from a finite generating set. We also give a number of other geometric group-theoretic results for Anosov-like group actions on bifoliated planes.

Non-transitive pseudo-Anosov flows

We study (topological) pseudo-Anosov flows from the perspective of the associated group actions on their orbit spaces and boundary at infinity. We extend the definition of Anosov-like action from [BFM22] from the transitive to the general non-transitive context and show that one can recover the basic sets of a flow, the Smale order on basic sets, and their essential features, from such general group actions. Using these tools, we prove that a pseudo-Anosov flow in a $3$ manifold is entirely determined by the associated action of the fundamental group on the boundary at infinity of its orbit space. We also give a proof that any topological pseudo-Anosov flow on an atoroidal 3-manifold is necessarily transitive, and prove that density of periodic orbits implies transitivity, in the topological rather than smooth case.

Pseudo-Anosov Flows: A Plane Approach

In this text we (re)-tell the theory of pseudo-Anosov flows on 3-manifolds with the orbit space as the central character; via a streamlined framework called {\em Anosov-like group actions}. This brings a simplified and unified perspective, and allows for the import of tools from 1- and 2-dimensional topological dynamics. In so doing, we are able to give a relatively efficient presentation (or re-presentation) of foundational results in the field which appeared over several decades and many papers. We hope that the reader, whether a beginning or more advanced topologist or dynamicist, finds this a welcoming invitation to the rich theory of pseudo-Anosov flows.

Topological stability of relatively hyperbolic groups acting on their boundaries

We prove a topological stability result for the actions of hyperbolic groups on their Bowditch boundaries. More precisely, we show that a sufficiently small perturbation of the standard boundary action, if assumed on each parabolic subgroup to be a perturbation by semi-conjugacy, is in fact always globally semi-conjugate to the standard action. This proves a relative version of the main result of arXiv:2206.14914. The assumption of control on the perturbation of parabolics is necessary.

Reconstructing flows from the orbit space

We give some simple conditions under which a group acting on a bifoliated plane comes from the induced action of a pseudo-Anosov flow on its orbit space. An application of the strategy is a less technical proof of a result of Barbot that the induced action of an Anosov flow on its orbit space uniquely determines the flow up to orbit equivalence. In another application, we recover an expansive flow on a 3-manifold from the action of a group on a \emph{loom space} as defined by Schleimer and Segerman.

Completing Prelaminations

Motivated by problems in the study of Anosov and pseudo-Anosov flows on 3-manifolds, we characterize when a pair $(L^+, L^-)$ of subsets of transverse laminations of the circle can be completed to a pair of transverse foliations of the plane or, separately, realized as the endpoints of such a bifoliation of the plane. (We allow also singular bifoliations with simple prongs, such as arise in pseudo-Anosov flows). This program is carried out at a level of generality applicable to bifoliations coming from pseudo-Anosov flows with and without perfect fits, as well as many other examples, and is natural with respect to group actions preserving these structures.

Anosov flows with the same periodic orbits

In [Orbit equivalences of pseudo-Anosov flows, arXiv:2211.10505], it was proved that transitive pseudo-Anosov flows on any closed 3-manifold are determined up to orbit equivalence by the set of free homotopy classes represented by periodic orbits, provided their orbit space does not contain a feature called a "tree of scalloped regions." In this article we describe what happens in these exceptional cases: we show what topological features in the manifold correspond to trees of scalloped regions, completely classify the flows which do have the same free homotopy data, and construct explicit examples of flows with the same free homotopy data that are not orbit equivalent.

Orbit equivalences of $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows and hyperbolic-like actions on the line

We prove a rigidity result for group actions on the line whose elements have what we call "hyperbolic-like" dynamics. Using this, we give a spectral rigidity theorem for $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows on 3-manifolds, characterizing orbit equivalent flows in terms of the elements of the fundamental group represented by periodic orbits. As consequences of this, we give an efficient criterion to determine the isotopy classes of self orbit equivalences of $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows, and prove finiteness of contact Anosov flows on any given manifold. In the appendix with Jonathan Bowden, we prove that orbit equivalences of contact Anosov flows correspond exactly to isomorphisms of the associated contact structures. This gives a powerful tool to translate results on Anosov flows to contact geometry and vice versa. We illustrate its use by giving two new results in contact geometry: the existence of manifolds with arbitrarily many distinct Anosov contact structures, answering a question of Foulon--Hasselblatt--Vaugon, and a virtual description of the group of contact transformations of a contact Anosov structure, generalizing a result of Giroux and Massot.

Stability for hyperbolic groups acting on boundary spheres

A hyperbolic group acts by homeomorphisms on its Gromov boundary. We show that if this boundary is a topological n-sphere the action is topologically stable in the dynamical sense: any nearby action is semi-conjugate to the standard boundary action.

Orbit equivalences of pseudo-Anosov flows

We prove a classification theorem for transitive Anosov and pseudo-Anosov flows on closed 3-manifolds, up to orbit equivalence. In many cases, flows on a 3-manifold $M$ are completely determined by the set of free homotopy classes of their (unoriented) periodic orbits. The exceptional cases are flows with a special structure in their orbit space called a ``tree of scalloped regions"; in these cases the set of free homotopy classes of unoriented periodic orbits together with the additional data of a choice of sign for each $π_1(M)$-orbit of tree gives a complete invariant of orbit equivalence classes of flows. The framework for the proof is a more general result about \emph{Anosov-like actions} of abstract groups on bifoliated planes, showing that the homeomorphism type of the bifoliation and the conjugacy class of the action can be recovered from knowledge of which elements of the group act with fixed points. As a consequence, we show that Anosov flows are determined up to orbit equivalence by the action on the ideal boundary of their orbit spaces, and more generally that transitive Anosov-like actions on bifoliated planes are determined up to conjugacy by their actions on the plane's ideal boundary: any conjugacy between two such actions on their ideal circles can be extended uniquely to a conjugacy on the interior of the plane.

Two results on end spaces of infinite type surfaces

We answer two questions about the topology of end spaces of infinite type surfaces and the action of the mapping class group that have appeared in the literature. First, we give examples of infinite type surfaces with end spaces that are not self-similar, but a unique maximal type of end, either a singleton or Cantor set. Secondly, we use an argument of Tsankov to show that the "local complexity" relation $\preccurlyeq$ on end types gives an equivalence relation that agrees with the notion of being locally homeomorphic.

Structure theorems for actions of homeomorphism groups

We give general classification and structure theorems for actions of groups of homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms on manifolds, reminiscent of classical results for actions of (locally) compact groups. This gives a negative answer to Ghys' "extension problem" for diffeomorphisms of manifolds with boundary, as well as a classification of all homomorphisma $\mathrm{Homeo}_0(M) \to \mathrm{Homeo}_0(N)$ when dim(M) = dim(N) (and related results for diffeomorphisms), and a complete classification of actions of $\mathrm{Homeo}_0(S^1)$ on surfaces. This resolves many problems in a program initiated by Ghys, and gives definitive answers to conjectures of Militon and Hurtado and a question of Rubin.

On the bordism group for group actions on the torus

In this short note, we study the bordism problem for group actions on the torus and give examples of groups acting on the torus by diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity that cannot be extended to an action on a bounding 3-manifold. This solves a question raised in the previous work of the authors.

Rotation sets and actions on curves

We study the action of the homeomorphism group of a surface $S$ on the fine curve graph ${\mathcal C }^\dagger(S)$. While the definition of $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ parallels the classical curve graph for mapping class groups, we show that the dynamics of the action of ${\mathrm{Homeo}}(S)$ on $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ is much richer: homeomorphisms induce parabolic isometries in addition to elliptics and hyperbolics, and all positive reals are realized as asymptotic translation lengths. When the surface $S$ is a torus, we relate the dynamics of the action of a homeomorphism on $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ to the dynamics of its action on the torus via the classical theory of rotation sets. We characterize homeomorphisms acting hyperbolically, show asymptotic translation length provides a lower bound for the area of the rotation set, and, while no characterisation purely in terms of rotation sets is possible, we give sufficient conditions for elements to be elliptic or parabolic.

Dynamical and cohomological obstructions to extending group actions

We study cohomological obstructions to extending group actions on the boundary $\partial M$ of a $3$-manifold to a $C^0$-action on $M$ when $\partial M$ is diffeomorphic to a torus or a sphere. In particular, we show that for a $3$-manifold $M$ with torus boundary which is not diffeomorphic to a solid torus, the torus action on the boundary does not extend to a $C^0$-action on $M$.
