Cosmological gravity probes: connecting recent theoretical developments to forthcoming observations

Since the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the present Universe, significant theoretical developments have been made in the area of modified gravity. In the meantime, cosmological observations have been providing more high-quality data, allowing us to explore gravity on cosmological scales. To bridge the recent theoretical developments and observations, we present an overview of a variety of modified theories of gravity and the cosmological observables in the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure, supplemented with a summary of predictions for cosmological observables derived from cosmological perturbations and sophisticated numerical studies. We specifically consider scalar-tensor theories in the Horndeski and DHOST family, massive gravity/bigravity, vector-tensor theories, metric-affine gravity, and cuscuton/minimally-modified gravity, and discuss the current status of those theories with emphasis on their physical motivations, validity, appealing features, the level of maturity, and calculability. We conclude that the Horndeski theory is one of the most well-developed theories of modified gravity, although several remaining issues are left for future observations. The paper aims to help to develop strategies for testing gravity with ongoing and forthcoming cosmological observations.

Spin-2 dark matter from anisotropic Universe in bigravity

Bigravity is one of the natural extensions of general relativity and contains an additional massive spin-2 field which can be a good candidate for dark matter. To discuss the production of spin-2 dark matter, we study fixed point solutions of the background equations for axisymmetric Bianchi type-I Universes in two bigravity theories without Boulware-Deser ghost, i.e., Hassan-Rosen bigravity and Minimal Theory of Bigravity. We investigate the local and global stability of the fixed points and classify them. Based on the general analysis, we propose a new scenario where spin-2 dark matter is produced by the transition from an anisotropic fixed point solution to isotropic one. The produced spin-2 dark matter can account for all or a part of dark matter and can be directly detected by laser interferometers in the same way as gravitational waves.

Resolving the pathologies of self-interacting Proca fields: A case study of Proca stars

It has been argued that a self-interacting massive vector field is pathological due to a dynamical formation of a singular effective metric of the vector field, which is the onset of a gradient or ghost instability. We discuss that this singularity formation is not necessarily a fundamental problem but a breakdown of the effective field theory (EFT) description of the massive vector field. By using a model of ultraviolet (UV) completion of the massive vector field, we demonstrate that a Proca star, a self-gravitating condensate of the vector field, continues to exist even after the EFT suffers from a gradient instability without any pathology at UV, in which the EFT description is still valid and the gradient instability in EFT may be interpreted as a standard dynamical instability of a high-density boson star from the UV perspective. On the other hand, we find that the EFT description is broken before the ghost instability appears. This suggests that a heavy degree of freedom may be spontaneously excited to cure the pathology of the EFT as the EFT dynamically tends to approach the onset of the ghost instability.

Effective Field Theory of Gravitating Continuum: Solids, Fluids, and Aether Unified

We investigate the relativistic effective field theory (EFT) describing a non-dissipative gravitating continuum. In addition to ordinary continua, namely solids and fluids, we find an extraordinary more symmetric continuum, aether. In particular, the symmetry of the aether concludes that a homogeneous and isotropic state behaves like a cosmological constant. We formulate the EFT in the unitary/comoving gauge in which the dynamical degrees of freedom of the continuum (phonons) are eaten by the spacetime metric. This gauge choice, which is interpreted as the Lagrangian description in hydrodynamics, offers a neat geometrical understanding of continua. We examine a thread-based spacetime decomposition with respect to the four-velocity of the continuum which is different from the foliation-based Arnowitt-Deser-Misner one. Our thread-based decomposition respects the symmetries of the continua and, therefore, makes it possible to systematically find invariant building blocks of the EFT for each continuum even at higher orders in the derivative expansion. We also discuss the linear dynamics of the system and show that both gravitons and phonons acquire "masses" in a gravitating background.

The Effective Field Theory of Vector-Tensor Theories

We investigate a systematic formulation of vector-tensor theories based on the effective field theory (EFT) approach. The input of our EFT is that the spacetime symmetry is spontaneously broken by the existence of a preferred timelike direction in accordance with the cosmological principle. After clarifying the difference of the symmetry breaking pattern from the conventional EFT of inflation/dark energy, we find an EFT description of vector-tensor theories around the cosmological background. This approach not only serves as a unified description of vector-tensor theories but also highlights universal differences between the scalar-tensor theories and the vector-tensor theories. The theories having different symmetry breaking patterns are distinguished by a phenomenological function and consistency relations between the EFT coefficients. We study the linear cosmological perturbations within our EFT framework and discuss the characteristic properties of the vector-tensor theories in the context of dark energy. In particular, we compute the effective gravitational coupling and the slip parameter for the matter density contrast in terms of the EFT coefficients.

Shift-symmetric $SO(N)$ multi-Galileon

A Poincarè invariant, local scalar field theory in which the Lagrangian and the equation of motion contain only up to second-order derivatives of the fields is called generalized Galileon. The covariant version of it in four dimensions is called Horndeski theory, and has been vigorously studied in applications to inflation and dark energy. In this paper, we study a class of multi-field extensions of the generalized Galileon theory. By imposing shift and $SO(N)$ symmetries on all the currently known multi-Galileon terms in general dimensions, we find that the structure of the Lagrangian is uniquely determined and parameterized by a series of coupling constants. We also study tensor perturbation in the shift-symmetric $SO(3)$ multi-Galileon theory in four dimensions. The tensor perturbations can obtain a mass term stemming from the same symmetry breaking pattern as the solid inflation. We also find that the shift-symmetric $SO(3)$ multi-Galileon theory gives rise to new cubic interactions of the tensor modes, suggesting the existence of a new type of tensor primordial non-Gaussianity.

Positivity vs. Lorentz-violation: an explicit example

We show how a class of multi-field scalar-field theories in a Lorentz-breaking background imposes consistency conditions on its effective theory of a single field and provides an example of order-unity violation of a naively applied positivity bound, assuming a large hierarchy between the masses of the lightest field and the others.

Is the Standard Model in the Swampland? Consistency Requirements from Gravitational Scattering

We study compatibility of the Standard Model of particle physics and General Relativity by means of gravitational positivity bounds, which provide a necessary condition for a low-energy gravitational theory to be UV completable within the weakly coupled regime of gravity. In particular, we identify the cutoff scale of the Standard Model coupled to gravity by studying consistency of light-by-light scattering. While the precise value depends on details of the Pomeron effects in QCD, the cutoff scale reads $10^{16}$GeV if the single-Pomeron exchange picture works well up to this scale. We also demonstrate that the cutoff scale is lowered to $10^{13}$GeV if we consider the electroweak theory without the QCD sector.

Inflationary gravitational waves in consistent $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study the slow-roll single field inflation in the context of the consistent $D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity that was recently proposed in \cite{Aoki:2020lig}. In addition to the standard attractor regime, we find a new attractor regime which we call the Gauss-Bonnet attractor as the dominant contribution comes from the Gauss-Bonnet term. Around this attractor solution, we find power spectra and spectral tilts for the curvature perturbations and gravitational waves (GWs) and also a model-independent consistency relation among observable quantities. The Gauss-Bonnet term provides a nonlinear $k^4$ term to the GWs dispersion relation which has the same order as the standard linear $k^2$ term at the time of horizon crossing around the Gauss-Bonnet attractor. The Gauss-Bonnet attractor regime thus provides a new scenario for the primordial GWs which can be tested by observations. Finally, we study non-Gaussianity of GWs in this model and estimate the nonlinear parameters $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;sq}$ and $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;eq}$ by fitting the computed GWs bispectra with the local-type and equilateral-type templates respectively at the squeezed limit and at the equilateral shape. For helicities $(+++)$ and $( -- )$, $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;sq}$ is larger while $f^{s_1s_2s_3}_{\rm NL,\;eq}$ is larger for helicities $(++-)$ and $(--+)$.

Cosmology and gravitational waves in consistent $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In a very recent paper [1], we have proposed a novel $4$-dimensional gravitational theory with two dynamical degrees of freedom, which serves as a consistent realization of $D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $\tildeα$. This has been made possible by breaking a part of diffeomorphism invariance, and thus is consistent with the Lovelock theorem. In the present paper, we study cosmological implications of the theory in the presence of a perfect fluid and clarify the similarities and differences between the results obtained from the consistent $4$-dimensional theory and those from the previously considered, naive (and inconsistent) $D\rightarrow 4$ limit. Studying the linear perturbations, we explicitly show that the theory only has tensorial gravitational degrees of freedom (besides the matter degree) and that for $\tildeα>0$ and $\dot{H}<0$, perturbations are free of any pathologies so that we can implement the setup to construct early and/or late time cosmological models. Interestingly, a $k^4$ term appears in the dispersion relation of tensor modes which plays significant roles at small scales and makes the theory different than not only general relativity but also many other modified gravity theories as well as the naive (and inconsistent) $D\to 4$ limit. Taking into account the $k^4$ term, the observational constraint on the propagation of gravitational waves yields the bound $\tildeα \lesssim (10\,{\rm meV})^{-2}$. This is the first bound on the only parameter (besides the Newton's constant and the choice of a constraint that stems from a temporal gauge fixing) in the consistent theory of $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Non-uniqueness of massless transverse-traceless graviton

We study a theory of minimally modified gravity called cuscuton/VCDM that propagates only two gravitational degrees of freedom. Despite being apparently different from general relativity (GR), it is in principle possible that this theory might be obtained via a field redefinition starting from the GR action. This would make the vacuum theory equivalent to GR and the theory would differ from GR only in the presence of matter. In this paper, studying the dispersion relation of gravitational waves and the dynamics of the Bianchi-I universe, we prove that such a field redefinition does not exist and that the theory differs from GR already in vacuum.

Non-linearly ghost-free higher curvature gravity

We find unitary and local theories of higher curvature gravity in the vielbein formalism, known as the Poincaré gauge theory by utilizing the equivalence to the ghost-free massive bigravity. We especially focus on three and four dimensions but extensions into a higher dimensional spacetime are straightforward. In three dimensions, a quadratic gravity $\mathcal{L}=R+T^2+R^2$, where $R$ is the curvature and $T$ is the torsion with indices omitted, is shown to be equivalent to zwei-dreibein gravity and free from the ghost at fully non-linear orders. In a special limit, new massive gravity is recovered. When the model is applied to the AdS/CFT correspondence, unitarity both in the bulk theory and in the boundary theory implies that the torsion must not vanish. On the other hand, in four dimensions, the absence of ghost at non-linear orders requires an infinite number of higher curvature terms, and these terms can be given by a schematic form $R(1+R/αm^2)^{-1}R$ where $m$ is the mass of the massive spin-2 mode originating from the higher curvature terms and $α$ is an additional parameter that determines the amplitude of the torsion. We also provide another four-dimensional ghost-free higher curvature theory that contains a massive spin-0 mode as well as the massive spin-2 mode.

A consistent theory of $D\rightarrow 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigate the $D\rightarrow 4$ limit of the $D$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the limit is taken with $\tildeα=(D-4)\, α$ kept fixed and $α$ is the original Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Using the ADM decomposition in $D$ dimensions, we clarify that the limit is rather subtle and ambiguous (if not ill-defined) and depends on the way how to regularize the Hamiltonian or/and the equations of motion. To find a consistent theory in $4$ dimensions that is different from general relativity, the regularization needs to either break (a part of) the diffeomorphism invariance or lead to an extra degree of freedom, in agreement with the Lovelock theorem. We then propose a consistent theory of $D\rightarrow 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with two dynamical degrees of freedom by breaking the temporal diffeomorphism invariance and argue that, under a number of reasonable assumptions, the theory is unique up to a choice of a constraint that stems from a temporal gauge condition.

Gravitational positivity bounds

We study the validity of positivity bounds in the presence of a massless graviton, assuming the Regge behavior of the amplitude. Under this assumption, the problematic $t$-channel pole is canceled with the UV integral of the imaginary part of the amplitude in the dispersion relation, which gives rise to finite corrections to the positivity bounds. We find that low-energy effective field theories (EFT) with "wrong" sign are generically allowed. The allowed amount of the positivity violation is determined by the Regge behavior. This violation is suppressed by $M_{\rm pl}^{-2}α'$ where $α'$ is the scale of Reggeization. This implies that the positivity bounds can be applied only when the cutoff scale of EFT is much lower than the scale of Reggeization. We then obtain the positivity bounds on scalar-tensor EFT at one-loop level. Implications of our results on the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theory are also discussed.

Minimally Modified Gravity fitting Planck data better than $Λ$CDM

We study the phenomenology of a class of minimally modified gravity theories called $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories, in which the usual general relativistic Hamiltonian constraint is replaced by a free function of it. After reviewing the construction of the theory and a consistent matter coupling, we analyze the dynamics of cosmology at the levels of both background and perturbations, and present a concrete example of the theory with a $3$-parameter family of the function $f$. Finally, we compare this example model to Planck data as well as some later-time probes, showing that such a realization of $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories fits the data significantly better than the standard $Λ$CDM model, in particular by modifying gravity at intermediate redshifts, $z\simeq743$.

Ghost from constraints: a generalization of Ostrogradsky theorem

Ostrogradsky theorem states that Hamiltonian is unbounded when Euler-Lagrange equations are higher than second-order differential equations under the nondegeneracy assumption. Since higher-order nondegenerate Lagrangian can be always recast into an equivalent system with at most first-order derivatives by introducing auxiliary variables and constraints, it is conceivable that the link between ghost and higher derivatives may be reinterpreted as a link between ghost and constraints and/or auxiliary variables. We find that the latter point of view actually provides more general perspective than the former, by exploring the un/boundedness of the Hamiltonian for general theories containing auxiliary variables, for which Euler-Lagrange equations can be essentially second order or lower than that. For Lagrangians including auxiliary variables nonlinearly, we derive the degeneracy condition to evade the Ostrogradsky ghost that can apply even if auxiliary variables can be solved only locally. For theories with constraints with Lagrange multipliers, we establish criteria for inclusion of nonholonomic (velocity-dependent) constraints leading to the absence of local minimum of Hamiltonian. Our criteria include the Ostrogradsky theorem as a special case, and can detect not only ghost associated with higher-order derivatives, but also ghost coming from lower-order derivatives in system with constraints. We discuss how to evade such a ghost. We also provide various specific examples to highlight application and limitation of our general arguments.

Consistent inflationary cosmology from quadratic gravity with dynamical torsion

The idea of gauge theories of gravity predicts that there should exist not only the massless graviton but also massive particles carrying the gravitational force. We study the cosmology in a quadratic gravity with dynamical torsion where gravity may be interpreted as a gauge force associated with the Poincaré group. In addition to the massless spin-2 graviton, the model contains four non-ghost massive particle species: a couple of spin-0, a spin-1 and a spin-2. Supposing the restoration of the local Weyl invariance in the UV limit and the parity invariance, we find the most general minisuperspace action describing a homogeneous and isotropic universe with a flat spatial geometry. We then transform the minisuperspace action to a quasi-Einstein frame in which the field space is a hyperboloid and the field potential is a combination of those of a Starobinsky-like inflation and a natural inflation. Remarkably, thanks to the multi-field dynamics, the Starobinsky-like inflationary trajectory can be realized even if the initial condition is away from the top of the Starobinsky-like potential. We also study linear tensor perturbations and find qualitatively different features than the Starobinsky inflation, spontaneous parity violation and mixing of the massless and massive spin-2 modes, which might reveal the underlying nature of gravity through inflationary observables.

Novel matter coupling in general relativity via canonical transformation

We study canonical transformations of general relativity (GR) to provide a novel matter coupling to gravity. Although the transformed theory is equivalent to GR in vacuum, the equivalence no longer holds if a matter field minimally couples to the canonically transformed gravitational field. We find that a naive matter coupling to the transformed field leads to the appearance of an extra mode in the phase space, rendering the theory inconsistent. We then find a consistent and novel way of matter coupling: after imposing a gauge fixing condition, a matter field can minimally couple to gravity without generating an unwanted extra mode. As a result, the way matter field couples to the gravitational field determines the preferred time direction and the resultant theory has only two gravitational degrees of freedom. We also discuss the cosmological solution and linear perturbations around it, and confirm that their dynamics indeed differ from those in GR. The novel matter coupling can be used for a new framework of modified gravity theories.
