Arithmetic Constraints on Hypergeometric Identities

The standard literature on special functions contains a lot of hypergeometric identities involving products and quotients of gamma functions, but still the occurrence of such identities is a sporadic phenomenon. This is because the existence of them is constrained by severe arithmetic conditions. We demonstrate this kind of constraints by focusing on a certain data region where the essential nature of the issue comes out clearly.

Equivariant Linearization and Rotation Domains on K3 Surfaces

We construct a lot of K3 surface automorphisms of positive entropy having rotation domains of ranks 1 and 2. To carry out this construction, we first lay theoretical foundations concerning equivariant linearization of nonlinear maps under resolutions of quotient singularities, linear models near exceptional components, Salem numbers and multipliers at periodic points, two kinds of fixed point formulas and related indices at exceptional components. Then these basic tools are combined with the method of hypergeometric groups to enable us to detect various types of rotation domains on K3 surfaces.

K3 Surfaces, Picard Numbers and Siegel Disks

If a K3 surface admits an automorphism with a Siegel disk, then its Picard number is an even integer between $0$ and $18$. Conversely, using the method of hypergeometric groups, we are able to construct K3 surface automorphisms with Siegel disks that realize all possible Picard numbers. The constructions involve extensive computer searches for appropriate Salem numbers and computations of algebraic numbers arising from holomorphic Lefschetz-type formulas and related Grothendieck residues.

Hypergeometric Groups and Dynamics on K3 Surfaces

A hypergeometric group is a matrix group modeled on the monodromy group of a generalized hypergeometric differential equation. This article presents a fruitful interaction between the theory of hypergeometric groups and dynamics on K3 surfaces by showing that a certain class of hypergeometric groups and related lattices lead to a lot of K3 surface automorphisms of positive entropy, especially such automorphisms with Siegel disks.

Discrete Laplace Method and Truncation Error of Gauss Continued Fraction

The leading asymptotics of the truncation error for Gauss's continued fraction is determined exactly. Not only for this purpose but also for wider applicability elsewhere the discrete analogue of Laplace's method for hypergeometric series containing a large parameter, which was developed in a previous paper, is generalized in two directions.

Duality and Reciprocity for Hypergeometric Series with Gamma Product Formula

Following a previous article we continue our study on non-terminating hypergeometric series with one free parameter, which aims to find arithmetical constraints for a given hypergeometric series to admit a gamma product formula. In this article we exploit the concepts of duality and reciprocity not only to extend already obtained results to a larger region but also to strengthen themselves substantially. Among other things we are able to settle the rationality and finiteness conjectures posed in the previous article.

Three-Term Relations for 3F2(1)

For the hypergeometric function of unit argument 3F2(1) we prove the existence and uniqueness of three-term relations with arbitrary integer shifts. We show that not only the original 3F2(1) function but also other five functions related to it satisfy one and the same three-term relation. This fact is referred to as simultaneousness. The uniqueness and simultaneousness provide three-term relations with a group symmetry of order 72.

Contiguous Relations, Laplace's Methods and Continued Fractions for 3F2(1)

Using contiguous relations we construct an infinite number of continued fraction expansions for ratios of generalized hypergeometric series 3F2(1). We establish exact error term estimates for their approximants and prove their rapid convergences. To do so we develop a discrete version of Laplace's method for hypergeometric series in addition to the use of ordinary (continuous) Laplace's method for Euler's hypergeometric integrals.

On Some Hypergeometric Summations

We develop a theoretical study of non-terminating hypergeometric summations with one free parameter. Composing various methods in complex and asymptotic analysis, geometry and arithmetic of certain transcendental curves and rational approximations of irrational numbers, we are able to obtain some necessary conditions of arithmetic flavor for a given hypergeometric sum to admit a gamma product formula. This kind of research seems to be new even in the most classical case of the Gauss hypergeometric series.

Triakis Solids and Harmonic Functions

We describe the harmonic functions for certain isohedral triakis solids. They are the first examples for which polyhedral harmonics is strictly larger than group harmonics.

Cubic Harmonics and Bernoulli Numbers

The functions satisfying the mean value property for an n-dimensional cube are determined explicitly. This problem is related to invariant theory for a finite reflection group, especially to a system of invariant differential equations. Solving this problem is reduced to showing that a certain set of invariant polynomials forms an invariant basis. After establishing a certain summation formula over Young diagrams, the latter problem is settled by considering a recursion formula involving Bernoulli numbers. Keywords: polyhedral harmonics; cube; reflection groups; invariant theory; invariant differential equations; generating functions; partitions; Young diagrams; Bernoulli numbers.

Singular cubic surfaces and the dynamics of Painleve VI

We develop a dynamical study of the sixth Painleve equation for all parameters generalizing an earlier work for generic parameters. Here the main focus of this paper is on non-generic parameters, for which the corresponding character variety becomes a cubic surface with simple singularities and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is a minimal resolution of the singular surface, not a biholomorphism as in the generic case. Introducing a suitable stratification on the parameter space and based on geometry of singular cubic surfaces, we establish a chaotic nature of the nonlinear monodromy map of Painleve VI and give a precise estimate for the number of its isolated periodic solutions.

On Algebraic Solutions to Painleve VI

We announce some results which might bring a new insight into the classification of algebraic solutions to the sixth Painleve equation. The main results consist of the rationality of parameters, trigonometric Diophantine conditions, and what the author calls the Tetrahedral Theorem regarding the absence of algebraic solutions in certain situations. The method is based on fruitful interactions between the moduli theoretical formulation of Painleve VI and dynamics on character varieties via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.

Area-Preserving Surface Dynamics and S. Saito's Fixed Point Formula

We show that S. Saito's fixed point formula serves as a powerful tool for counting the number of isolated periodic points of an area-preserving surface map admitting periodic curves. His notion of periodic curves of types I and II plays a central role in our discussion. We establish a Shub-Sullivan type result on the stability of local indices under iterations of the map, the finiteness of the number of periodic curves of type II, and the absence of periodic curves of type I. Combined with these results, Saito's formula implies the existence of infinitely many isolated periodic points whose cardinality grows exponentially as period tends to infinity.

Finite branch solutions to Painleve VI around a fixed singular point

Every finite branch solutions to the sixth Painleve equation around a fixed singular point is an algebraic branch solution. In particular a global solution is an algebraic solution if and only if it is finitely many-valued globally. The proof of this result relies on algebraic geometry of Painleve VI, Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, geometry and dynamics on cubic surfaces, resolutions of Kleinian singularities, and power geometry of algebraic differential equations. In the course of the proof we are also able to classify all finite branch solutions up to Backlund transformations.

Moduli of Stable Parabolic Connections, Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence and Geometry of Painlevé Equation of Type VI, Part II

In this paper, we show that the family of moduli spaces of $\balpha'$-stable $(\bt, \blambda)$-parabolic $ϕ$-connections of rank 2 over $\BP^1$ with 4-regular singular points and the fixed determinant bundle of degree -1 is isomorphic to the family of Okamoto--Painlevé pairs introduced by Okamoto \cite{O1} and \cite{STT02}. We also discuss about the generalization of our theory to the case where the rank of the connections and genus of the base curve are arbitrary. Defining isomonodromic flows on the family of moduli space of stable parabolic connections via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondences, we will show that a property of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondences implies the Painlevé property of isomonodromic flows.

An ergodic study of Painleve VI

An ergodic study of Painleve VI is developed. The chaotic nature of its Poincare return map is established for almost all loops. The exponential growth of the numbers of periodic solutions is also shown. Principal ingredients of the arguments are a moduli-theoretical formulation of Painleve VI, a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, the dynamical system of a birational map on a cubic surface, and the Lefschetz fixed point formula.
