The S-parameter in Holographic Technicolor Models

We study the S parameter, considering especially its sign, in models of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) in extra dimensions, with fermions localized near the UV brane. Such models are conjectured to be dual to 4D strong dynamics triggering EWSB. The motivation for such a study is that a negative value of S can significantly ameliorate the constraints from electroweak precision data on these models, allowing lower mass scales (TeV or below) for the new particles and leading to easier discovery at the LHC. We first extend an earlier proof of S>0 for EWSB by boundary conditions in arbitrary metric to the case of general kinetic functions for the gauge fields or arbitrary kinetic mixing. We then consider EWSB in the bulk by a Higgs VEV showing that S is positive for arbitrary metric and Higgs profile, assuming that the effects from higher-dimensional operators in the 5D theory are sub-leading and can therefore be neglected. For the specific case of AdS_5 with a power law Higgs profile, we also show that S ~ + O(1), including effects of possible kinetic mixing from higher-dimensional operator (of NDA size) in the $5D$ theory. Therefore, our work strongly suggests that S is positive in calculable models in extra dimensions.

Warped Gravitons at the LHC and Beyond

We study the production and decay of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in the framework of a warped extra dimension in which the Standard Model (SM) fields propagate. Such a scenario can provide solutions to both the Planck-weak hierarchy problem and the flavor puzzle of the SM. In this scenario, the production via $q \bar{q}$ annihilation and decays to the conventional photon and lepton channels are highly suppressed. However, we show that graviton production via gluon fusion followed by decay to longitudinal $Z/W$ can be significant; vector boson fusion is found to be a sub-dominant production mode. In particular, the ``golden'' $ZZ$ decay mode offers a distinctive 4-lepton signal that could lead to the observation at the LHC with 300 fb$^{-1}$ (SLHC with 3 ab$^{-1}$) of a KK graviton with a mass up to $\sim 2$ ($\sim 3$) TeV for the ratio of the AdS$_5$ curvature to the Planck scale modestly above unity. We argue that (contrary to the lore) such a size of the curvature scale can still be within the regime of validity of the framework. Upgrades beyond the SLHC luminosity are required to discover gravitons heavier than $\sim 4$ TeV, as favored by the electroweak and flavor precision tests in the simplest such models.

LHC Signals from Warped Extra Dimensions

We study production of Kaluza-Klein gluons (KKG) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in the bulk. We show that the detection of KK gluon is challenging since its production is suppressed by small couplings to the proton's constituents. Moreover, the KK gluon decays mostly to top pairs due to an enhanced coupling and hence is broad. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that for m_{KKG} \lesssim 4 TeV, 100 fb^{-1} of data at the LHC can provide discovery of the KK gluon. We utilize a sizeable left-right polarization asymmetry from the KK gluon resonance to maximize the signal significance, and we explore the novel feature of extremely highly energetic "top-jets". We briefly discuss how the detection of electroweak gauge KK states (Z/W) faces a similar challenge since their leptonic decays (``golden'' modes) are suppressed. Our analysis suggests that other frameworks, for example little Higgs, which rely on UV completion via strong dynamics might face similar challenges, namely (1) Suppressed production rates for the new particles (such as Z'), due to their ``light-fermion-phobic'' nature, and (2) Difficulties in detection since the new particles are broad and decay predominantly to third generation quarks and longitudinal gauge bosons.

A custodial symmetry for Zbb

We show that a subgroup of the custodial symmetry O(3) that protects delta rho from radiative corrections can also protect the Zbb coupling. This allows one to build models of electroweak symmetry breaking, such as Higgsless, Little Higgs or 5D composite Higgs models, that are safe from corrections to Z-> bb. We show that when this symmetry protects Zbb it cannot simultaneously protect Ztt and Wtb. Therefore one can expect to measure sizable deviations from the SM predictions of these couplings at future collider experiments. We also show under what circumstances Zb_R b_R can receive corrections in the right direction to explain the anomaly in the LEP/SLD forward-backward asymmetry A^b_{FB}.

Probing the Randall-Sundrum geometric origin of flavor with lepton flavor violation

The ``anarchic'' Randall-Sundrum model of flavor is a low energy solution to both the electroweak hierarchy and flavor problems. Such models have a warped, compact extra dimension with the standard model fermions and gauge bosons living in the bulk, and the Higgs living on or near the TeV brane. In this paper we consider bounds on these models set by lepton flavor violation constraints. We find that loop-induced decays of the form l->l'+gamma are ultraviolet sensitive and uncalculable when the Higgs field is localized on a four-dimensional brane; this drawback does not occur when the Higgs field propagates in the full five-dimensional space-time. We find constraints at the few TeV level throughout the natural range of parameters, arising from muon-electron conversion in the presence of nuclei, rare muon decays, and rare tau decays. A "tension" exists between loop-induced dipole decays such as mu->e+gamma and tree-level processes such as muon-electron conversion; they have opposite dependences on the five-dimensional Yukawa couplings, making it difficult to decouple flavor-violating effects. We emphasize the importance of the future experiments MEG and PRIME. These experiments will definitively test the Randall-Sundrum geometric origin of hierarchies in the lepton sector at the TeV-scale.

Collider Signals of Top Quark Flavor Violation from a Warped Extra Dimension

We study top quark flavor violation in the framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in the bulk. Such a scenario provides solutions to both the Planck-weak hierarchy problem and the flavor puzzle of the SM without inducing a flavor problem. We find that, generically, tcZ couplings receive a huge enhancement, in particular the right handed ones can be O(1%). This results in BR(t -> c Z) at or above the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At the International Linear Collider (ILC), single top production, via e^+ e^- -> t \bar c, can be a striking signal for this scenario. In particular, it represents a physics topic of critical importance that can be explored even with a relatively low energy option, close to the tc threshold. At both the LHC and the ILC, angular distributions can probe the above prediction of dominance of right-handed couplings.

The Minimal Composite Higgs Model and Electroweak Precision Tests

A complete analysis of the electroweak precision observables is performed within a recently proposed minimal composite Higgs model, realized as a 5-dimensional warped compactification. In particular, we compute Z->bb and the one-loop correction to the rho parameter. We find that oblique data can be easily reproduced without a significant amount of tuning in the parameters of the model, while Z->bb imposes a stronger constraint. As a consequence of the latter, some of the new fermionic resonances must have mass around 4 TeV, which corresponds to an electroweak fine tuning of a few percent. Other resonances, such as Z', can be lighter in sizeable portions of the parameter space. We discuss in detail the origin of the Z->bb constraint and we suggest several possible avenues beyond the minimal model for weakening it.

Next to Minimal Flavor Violation

The flavor structure of a wide class of models, denoted as next to minimal flavor violation (NMFV), is considered. In the NMFV framework, new physics (NP), which is required for stabilization of the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) scale, naturally couples (dominantly) to the third generation quarks and is quasi-aligned with the Yukawa matrices. Consequently, new sources of flavor and CP violation are present in the theory, mediated by a low scale of few TeV. However, in spite of the low flavor scale, the most severe bounds on the scale of NP are evaded since these are related to flavor violation in the first two generations. Instead, one typically finds that the NP contributions are comparable in size to SM loop processes. We argue that, in spite of the successful SM unitary triangle fit and contrary to the common lore, such a sizable contribution to Delta F=2 processes of ~ 40% (with arbitrary phase) compared to SM is presently allowed since B-factories are only beginning to constrain these models. Thus, it is very interesting that in the NMFV models one is not forced to separate the scale of NP related to EWSB and the scale of flavor violation. We show briefly that this simple setup includes a wide class of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models all of which solve the hierarchy problem. We further discuss tests related to Delta F=1 processes, in particular the ones related to b -> s transition. The b -> s processes are computed using two different hadronic models to estimate the uncertainties involved. In addition, we derive constraints on the NP from B -> Kpi data using only SU(3) flavor symmetry and minimal dynamical assumptions. Finally we argue that in many cases correlating Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 processes is a powerful tool to probe our framework.

Top Compositeness and Precision Unification

The evolution of Standard Model gauge couplings is studied in a non-supersymmetric scenario in which the hierarchy problem is resolved by Higgs compositeness above the weak scale. It is argued that massiveness of the top quark combined with precision tests of the bottom quark imply that the right-handed top must also be composite. If, further, the Standard Model gauge symmetry is embedded into a simple subgroup of the unbroken composite-sector flavor symmetry, then precision coupling unification is shown to occur at~10^{15} GeV, to a degree comparable to supersymmetric unification.

Baryon Number in Warped GUTs : Model Building and (Dark Matter Related) Phenomenology

In the past year, a new non-supersymmetric framework for electroweak symmetry breaking (with or without Higgs) involving SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R * U(1)_{B-L} in higher dimensional warped geometry has been suggested. In this work, we embed this gauge structure into a GUT such as SO(10) or Pati-Salam. We showed recently (in hep-ph/0403143) that in a warped GUT, a stable Kaluza-Klein fermion can arise as a consequence of imposing proton stability. Here, we specify a complete realistic model where this particle is a weakly interacting right-handed neutrino, and present a detailed study of this new dark matter candidate, providing relic density and detection predictions. We discuss phenomenological aspects associated with the existence of other light (<~ TeV) KK fermions (related to the neutrino), whose lightness is a direct consequence of the top quark's heaviness. The AdS/CFT interpretation of this construction is also presented. Most of our qualitative results do not depend on the nature of the breaking of the electroweak symmetry provided that it happens near the TeV brane.

The Minimal Composite Higgs Model

We study the idea of a composite Higgs in the framework of a five-dimensional AdS theory. We present the minimal model of the Higgs as a pseudo-Goldstone boson in which electroweak symmetry is broken dynamically via top loop effects, all flavour problems are solved, and contributions to electroweak precision observables are below experimental bounds. Since the 5D theory is weakly coupled, we are able to fully determine the Higgs potential and other physical quantities. The lightest resonances are expected to have a mass around 2 TeV and should be discovered at the LHC. The top sector is mostly composite and deviations from Standard Model couplings are expected.

Warped Unification, Proton Stability and Dark Matter

Many extensions of the Standard Model have to face the problem of new unsuppressed baryon-number violating interactions. In supersymmetry, the simplest way to solve this problem is to assume R-parity conservation. As a result, the lightest supersymmetric particle becomes stable and a well-motivated dark matter candidate. In this paper, we show that solving the problem of baryon number violation in non supersymmetric grand unified theories (GUT's) in warped higher-dimensional spacetime can lead to a stable Kaluza-Klein particle. This exotic particle has gauge quantum numbers of a right-handed neutrino, but carries fractional baryon-number and is related to the top quark within the higher-dimensional GUT. A combination of baryon-number and SU(3) color ensures its stability. Its relic density can easily be of the right value for masses in the 10 GeV--few TeV range. An exciting aspect of these models is that the entire parameter space will be tested at near future dark matter direct detection experiments. Other exotic GUT partners of the top quark are also light and can be produced at high energy colliders with distinctive signatures.

B-factory Signals for a Warped Extra Dimension

We study predictions for B-physics in a class of models, recently introduced, with a non-supersymmetric warped extra dimension. In these models few ($\sim 3$) TeV Kaluza-Klein masses are consistent with electroweak data due to bulk custodial symmetry. Furthermore, there is an analog of GIM mechanism which is violated by the heavy top quark (just as in SM) leading to striking signals at $B$-factories:(i) New Physics (NP) contributions to $ΔF= 2$ transitions are comparable to SM. This implies that, within this NP framework, the success of SM unitarity triangle fit is a ``coincidence'' Thus, clean extractions of unitarity angles via e.g. $B \to ππ,ρπ, ρρ, DK$ are likely to be affected, in addition to O(1) deviation from SM prediction in $B_s$ mixing. (ii) O(1) deviation from SM predictions for $B \to X_s l^+ l^-$ in rate as well as in forward-backward and direct CP asymmetry. (iii) Large mixing-induced CP asymmetry in radiative B decays, wherein the SM unamibgously predicts very small asymmetries. Also with KK masses 3 TeV or less, and with anarchic Yukawa masses, contributions to electric dipole moments of the neutron are roughly 20 times larger than the current experimental bound so that this framework has a "CP problem".

Flavor Structure of Warped Extra Dimension Models

We recently showed, in hep-ph/0406101, that warped extra dimensional models with bulk custodial symmetry and few TeV KK masses lead to striking signals at $B$-factories. In this paper, using a spurion analysis, we systematically study the flavor structure of models that belong to the above class. In particular we find that the profiles of the zero modes, which are similar in all these models, essentially control the underlying flavor structure. This implies that our results are robust and model independent in this class of models. We discuss in detail the origin of the signals in B-physics. We also briefly study other NP signatures that arise in rare K decays ($K \to πνν$), in rare top decays [$t \to c γ(Z, gluon)$] and the possibilty of CP asymmetries in $D^0$ decays to CP eigenstates such as $K_S π^0$ and others. Finally we demonstrate that with light KK masses, $\sim3$ TeV, the above class of models with anarchic $5D$ Yukawas has a ``CP problem'' since contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment are roughly 20 times larger than the current experimental bound. Using AdS/CFT correspondence, these extra-dimensional models are dual to a purely 4D strongly coupled conformal Higgs sector thus enhancing their appeal.

RS1, Custodial Isospin and Precision Tests

We study precision electroweak constraints within a RS1 model with gauge fields and fermions in the bulk. The electroweak gauge symmetry is enhanced to SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}, thereby providing a custodial isospin symmetry sufficient to suppress excessive contributions to the T parameter. We then construct complete models, complying with all electroweak constraints, for solving the hierarchy problem, without supersymmetry or large hierarchies in the fundamental couplings. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence our models can be interpreted as dual to a strongly coupled conformal Higgs sector with global custodial symmetry, gauge and fermionic matter being fundamental fields external to the CFT. This scenario has interesting collider signals, distinct from other RS models in the literature.

Supersymmetric Flavor Models and the B --> phi K_S Anomaly

We consider the flavor structure of supersymmetric theories that can account for the deviation of the observed time-dependent CP asymmetry in B --> phi K_S from the standard model prediction. Assuming simple flavor symmetries and effective field theory, we investigate possible correlations between sizable supersymmetric contributions to b --> s transitions and to flavor changing processes that are more tightly constrained. With relatively few assumptions, we determine the properties of minimal Yukawa and soft mass textures that are compatible with the desired supersymmetric flavor-changing effect and constraints. We then present explicit models that are designed (at least approximately) to realize these textures. In particular, we present an Abelian model based on a single U(1) factor and a non-trivial extra-dimensional topography that can explain the CP asymmetry in B --> phi K_S, while suppressing other supersymmetric flavor changing effects through a high degree of squark-quark alignment.

Grand Unification in RS1

We study unification in the Randall-Sundrum scenario for solving the hierarchy problem, with gauge fields and fermions in the bulk. We calculate the one-loop corrected low-energy effective gauge couplings in a unified theory, broken at the scale M_GUT in the bulk. We find that, although this scenario has an extra dimension, there is a robust (calculable in the effective field theory) logarithmic dependence on M_GUT, strongly suggestive of high-scale unification, very much as in the (4D) Standard Model. Moreover, bulk threshold effects are naturally small, but volume-enhanced, so that we can accommodate the measured gauge couplings. We show in detail how excessive proton decay is forbidden by an extra U(1) bulk gauge symmetry. This mechanism requires us to further break the unified group using boundary conditions. A 4D dual interpretation, in the sense of the AdS/CFT correspondence, is provided for all our results. Our results show that an attractive unification mechanism can combine with a non-supersymmetric solution to the hierarchy problem.
