Academic Meeting Scheduling Using an Antiferromagnetic Potts Model

Scheduling parallel sessions of an academic meeting is a complicated task. If each presentation is assigned to an appropriate session, an antiferromagnetic Potts model can be used for semi-automatic timetabling. The timetabling method proposed here is based on graph coloring and includes additional constraints to be considered in a practical situation. We examine the feasibility of semi-automatic timetabling in some practical examples.

Effects of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert damping on domain growth

Domain patterns are simulated by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation with an easy-axis anisotropy. If the Gilbert damping is removed from the LLG equation, it merely describes the precession of magnetization with a ferromagnetic interaction. However, even without the damping, domains that look similar to those of scalar fields are formed, and they grow with time. It is demonstrated that the damping has no significant effects on domain growth laws and large-scale domain structure. In contrast, small-scale domain structure is affected by the damping. The difference in small-scale structure arises from energy dissipation due to the damping.

Coarsening dynamics driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

In ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the quadratic Zeeman effect controls magnetic anisotropy, which affects on magnetic domain pattern formation. While the longitudinal magnetization is dominant (similar to the Ising model) for a negative quadratic Zeeman energy, the transverse magnetization is dominant (similar to the XY model) for a positive one. When the quadratic Zeeman energy is positive, the coarsening dynamics is driven by vortex-antivortex annihilation in the same way as the XY model. However, due to superfluid flow of atoms, there exist several combinations of vortex-antivortex pairs in ferromagnetic BECs, which makes the coarsening dynamics more complicated than that of the XY model. We propose a revised domain growth law, which is based on the growth law of the two-dimensional XY model, for a two-dimensional ferromagnetic BEC with a positive quadratic Zeeman energy.

Spread of Infectious Diseases with a Latent Period

Infectious diseases spread through human networks. Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) model is one of the epidemic models to describe infection dynamics on a complex network connecting individuals. In the metapopulation SIR model, each node represents a population (group) which has many individuals. In this paper, we propose a modified metapopulation SIR model in which a latent period is taken into account. We call it SIIR model. We divide the infection period into two stages: an infected stage, which is the same as the previous model, and a seriously ill stage, in which individuals are infected and cannot move to the other populations. The two infectious stages in our modified metapopulation SIR model produce a discontinuous final size distribution. Individuals in the infected stage spread the disease like individuals in the seriously ill stage and never recover directly, which makes an effective recovery rate smaller than the given recovery rate.

Magnetic domain growth in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate: Effects of current

Magnetic domain patterns in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) show different properties depending on the quadratic Zeeman effect and dissipation. Another important factor that affects domain patterns and domain growth is superfluid flow of atoms. Domain growth in a ferromagnetic BEC with negative quadratic Zeeman energy is characterized by the same growth law as (classical) binary fluid in the inertial hydrodynamic regime. In the absence of the superfluid flow, the domain growth law for negative quadratic Zeeman energy is the same as that of scalar conserved fields such as binary alloys.

Dissipative hydrodynamic equation of a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate: Analogy to magnetization dynamics in conducting ferromagnets

The hydrodynamic equation of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) gives a simple description of spin dynamics in the condensate. We introduce the hydrodynamic equation of a ferromagnetic BEC with dissipation originating from the energy dissipation of the condensate. The dissipative hydrodynamic equation has the same form as an extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, which describes the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnets interacting with spin-polarized currents. Employing the dissipative hydrodynamic equation, we demonstrate the magnetic domain pattern dynamics of a ferromagnetic BEC in the presence and absence of a current of particles, and discuss the effects of the current on domain pattern formation. We also discuss the characteristic lengths of domain patterns that have domain walls with and without finite magnetization.

Phenomenological model for ordered onions under shear flow

We propose a phenomenological model for the multi-lamellar vesicles (onions) formation induced by shear flow. In a nonionic surfactant (C$_{12}$E$_4$) system, onion phases under a fixed shear flow within a certain range show the order-disorder transition accompanied with a size jump by changing temperature. Our model can simulate ordered and disordered onion phases with different onion sizes. We show numerical results of the onion formation simulated by the model and also discuss what factors in this system are critical to cause the transition between these two different onion phases.

Hydrodynamic equation of a spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We introduce equations of motion for spin dynamics in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, written using a vector expressing the superfluid velocity and a complex scalar describing the magnetization. This simple hydrodynamical description extracts the dynamics of spin wave and affords a straightforward approach by which to investigate the spin dynamics of the condensate. To demonstrate the advantages of the description, we illustrate dynamical instability and magnetic fluctuation preference, which are expressed in analytical forms.

Spontaneous Magnetic Ordering in a Ferromagnetic Spinor Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study the spin dynamics in a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (MDDI) based on the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theories. We find that various magnetic structures such as checkerboards and stripes emerge in the course of the dynamics due to the combined effects of spin-exchange interaction, MDDI, quadratic Zeeman and finite-size effects, and non-stationary initial conditions. However, the short-range magnetic order observed by the Berkeley group [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 170403 (2008)] is not fully reproduced in our calculations; the periodicity of the order differs by a factor of three and the checkerboard pattern eventually dissolves in our numerical simulations. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.

Level statistics of a pseudo-Hermitian Dicke model

A non-Hermitian operator that is related to its adjoint through a similarity transformation is defined as a pseudo-Hermitian operator. We study the level-statistics of a pseudo-Hermitian Dicke Hamiltonian that undergoes Quantum Phase Transition (QPT). We find that the level-spacing distribution of this Hamiltonian near the integrable limit is close to Poisson distribution, while it is Wigner distribution for the ranges of the parameters for which the Hamiltonian is non-integrable. We show that the assertion in the context of the standard Dicke model that QPT is a precursor to a change in the level statistics is not valid in general.

Effects of an oscillating field on magnetic domain patterns: Numerical and theoretical studies on the concentric-ring patterns surrounding a strong defect

Oscillating fields can make domain patterns change into various types of structures. Numerical simulations show that concentric-ring domain patterns centered at a strong defect are observed under a rapidly oscillating field in some cases. The concentric-ring pattern appears near the threshold of spatially-uniform patterns in high-frequency cases. The threshold is theoretically estimated and the theoretical threshold is in good agreement with numerical one in a high-frequency region. The theoretical analysis gives also good estimations of several characteristics of domain patterns for high-frequencies.

Effects of an oscillating field on pattern formation in a ferromagnetic thin film: Analysis of patterns traveling at a low velocity

Magnetic domain patterns under an oscillating field is studied theoretically by using a simple Ising-like model. We propose two ways to investigate the effects of the oscillating field. The first one leads to a model in which rapidly oscillating terms are averaged out, and the model can explain the existence of the maximum amplitude of the field for the appearance of patterns. The second one leads to a model that includes the delay of the response to the field, and the model suggests the existence of a traveling pattern which moves very slowly compared with the time scale of the driving field.

Field sweep rate dependence of magnetic domain patterns: Numerical simulations for a simple Ising-like model

We study magnetic domain patterns in ferromagnetic thin films by numerical simulations for a simple Ising-like model. Magnetic domain patterns after quench demonstrate various types of patterns depending on the field sweep rate and parameters of the model. How the domain patterns are formed is shown with use of the number of domains, the domain area, and domain area distributions as well as snapshots of domain patterns. Considering the proper time scale of the system, we propose a criterion for the structure of domain patterns.

Dynamical stability for finite quantum spin chains against a time-periodic inhomogeneous perturbation

We investigate dynamical stability of the ground state against a time-periodic and spatially-inhomogeneous magnetic field for finite quantum XXZ spin chains. We use the survival probability as a measure of stability and demonstrate that it decays as $P(t) \propto t^{-1/2}$ under a certain condition. The dynamical properties should also be related to the level statistics of the XXZ spin chains with a constant spatially-inhomogeneous magnetic field. The level statistics depends on the anisotropy parameter and the field strength. We show how the survival probability depends on the anisotropy parameter, the strength and frequency of the field.

Magnetic Domain Patterns Depending on the Sweeping Rate of Magnetic Fields

The domain patterns in a thin ferromagnetic film are investigated in both experiments and numerical simulations. Magnetic domain patterns under a zero field are usually observed after an external magnetic field is removed. It is demonstrated that the characteristics of the domain patterns depend on the decreasing rate of the external field, although it can also depend on other factors. Our numerical simulations and experiments show the following properties of domain patterns: a sea-island structure appears when the field decreases rapidly from the saturating field to the zero field, while a labyrinth structure is observed for a slowly decreasing field. The mechanism of the dependence on the field sweeping rate is discussed in terms of the concepts of crystallization.

Can the Landau-Lifshitz equation explain the spin-wave instability in ferromagnetic thin films for parallel pumping?

Spin-wave instability is studied analytically in the case of parallel pumping for thin films under external field perpendicular to the film plane. It is examined whether the instability threshold derived from only the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation can explain experimental instability threshold without using the microscopically-derived spin-wave line width, which is conventionally used. It is revealed that the butterfly curve cannot be explained from only the LL equation at least in an analytical way. By contrast, for the case of perpendicular pumping, the Suhl instability was well explained from the LL equation. The difference between the two cases comes from the nonlinear terms describing the relaxation of spin waves. It is suggested how the nonlinear terms in the LL equation should be related to the spin-wave line width for parallel pumping.

Spin-wave instability for parallel pumping in ferromagnetic thin films under oblique field

Spin-wave instability for parallel pumping is studied theoretically. The spin-wave instability threshold is calculated in ferromagnetic thin films under oblique field which has an oblique angle to the film plane. The butterfly curve of the threshold usually has a cusp at a certain value of the static external field. While the static field value of the cusp point varies as the oblique angle changes, the general properties of the butterfly curve show little noteworthy change. For very thin films, however, multiple cusps of the butterfly curve can appear due to different standing spin-wave modes, which indicate a novel feature for thin films under oblique field.

Level Statistics of XXZ Spin Chains with Discrete Symmetries: Analysis through Finite-size Effects

Level statistics is discussed for XXZ spin chains with discrete symmetries for some values of the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling parameter. We show how the level statistics of the finite-size systems depends on the NNN coupling and the XXZ anisotropy, which should reflect competition among quantum chaos, integrability and finite-size effects. Here discrete symmetries play a central role in our analysis. Evaluating the level-spacing distribution, the spectral rigidity and the number variance, we confirm the correspondence between non-integrability and Wigner behavior in the spectrum. We also show that non-Wigner behavior appears due to mixed symmetries and finite-size effects in some nonintegrable cases.
