Equivalence of modified gravity equation to the Clausius relation

We explicitly show that the equations of motion for modified gravity theories of $F(R)$-gravity, the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, $F(\mathcal{G})$-gravity and the non-local gravity are equivalent to the Clausius relation in thermodynamics. In addition, we discuss the relation between the expression of the entropy and the contribution from the modified gravity as well as the matter to the definition of the energy flux (heat).

Oscillating phantom in $F(R)$ gravity

We investigate the oscillating effective equation of state (EoS) of the universe around the phantom divide in the framework of $F(R)$ gravity. We illustrate the behavior of $F(R)$ with realizing multiple crossings of the phantom divide.

Thermodynamics in $F(R)$ gravity with phantom crossing

We study thermodynamics of the apparent horizon in $F(R)$ gravity. In particular, we demonstrate that a $F(R)$ gravity model with realizing a crossing of the phantom divide can satisfy the second law of thermodynamics in the effective phantom phase as well as non-phantom one.

Finite-time future singularities in modified gravity

We review finite-time future singularities in modified gravity. We reconstruct an explicit model of modified gravity realizing a crossing of the phantom divide and show that the Big Rip singularity appears in the modified gravitational theory. It is also demonstrated that the (finite-time) Big Rip singularity in the modified gravity is transformed into the infinite-time singularity in the corresponding scalar field theory obtained through the conformal transformation. Furthermore, we study several models of modified gravity which produce accelerating cosmologies ending at the finite-time future singularities of all four known types.

Crossing of the phantom divide in modified gravity

We reconstruct an explicit model of modified gravity in which a crossing of the phantom divide can be realized. It is shown that the (finite-time) Big Rip singularity appears in the model of modified gravity (i.e., in the so-called Jordan frame), whereas that in the corresponding scalar field theory obtained through the conformal transformation (i.e., in the so-called Einstein frame) the singularity becomes the infinite-time one. Furthermore, we investigate the relations between the scalar field theories with realizing a crossing of the phantom divide and the corresponding modified gravitational theories by using the inverse conformal transformation. It is demonstrated that the scalar field theories describing the non-phantom phase (phantom one with the Big Rip) can be represented as the theories of real (complex) $F(R)$ gravity through the inverse (complex) conformal transformation. We also study a viable model of modified gravity in which the transition from the de Sitter universe to the phantom phase can occur. In addition, we explore the stability for the obtained solutions of the crossing of the phantom divide under a quantum correction coming from conformal anomaly.

Cosmology in non-minimal Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory

We review cosmology in non-minimal Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory, in which the Yang-Mills/electromagnetic field couples to a function of the scalar curvature. We show that power-law inflation can be realized due to the non-minimal gravitational coupling of the Yang-Mills field which may be caused by quantum corrections. Moreover, we study non-minimal vector model in the framework of modified gravity and demonstrate that both inflation and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe can be realized. We also discuss the cosmological reconstruction of the Yang-Mills theory. Furthermore, we investigate late-time cosmology in non-minimal Maxwell-Einstein theory. We explore the forms of the non-minimal gravitational coupling which generate the finite-time future singularities and the general conditions for this coupling in order that the finite-time future singularities cannot appear.

Future of the universe in modified gravitational theories: Approaching to the finite-time future singularity

We investigate the future evolution of the dark energy universe in modified gravities including $F(R)$ gravity, string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and modified Gauss-Bonnet ones, and ideal fluid with the inhomogeneous equation of state (EoS). Modified Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) dynamics for all these theories may be presented in universal form by using the effective ideal fluid with an inhomogeneous EoS without specifying its explicit form. We construct several examples of the modified gravity which produces accelerating cosmologies ending at the finite-time future singularity of all four known types by applying the reconstruction program. Some scenarios to resolve the finite-time future singularity are presented. Among these scenarios, the most natural one is related with additional modification of the gravitational action in the early universe. In addition, late-time cosmology in the non-minimal Maxwell-Einstein theory is considered. We investigate the forms of the non-minimal gravitational coupling which generates the finite-time future singularities and the general conditions for this coupling in order that the finite-time future singularities cannot emerge. Furthermore, it is shown that the non-minimal gravitational coupling can remove the finite-time future singularities or make the singularity stronger (or weaker) in modified gravity.

Generic estimates for magnetic fields generated during inflation including Dirac-Born-Infeld theories

We estimate the strength of large-scale magnetic fields produced during inflation in the framework of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories. This analysis is sufficiently general in the sense that it covers most of conformal symmetry breaking theories in which the electromagnetic field is coupled to a scalar field. In DBI theories there is an additional factor associated with the speed of sound, which allows a possibility to lead to an extra amplification of the magnetic field in a ultra-relativistic region. We clarify the conditions under which seed magnetic fields to feed the galactic dynamo mechanism at a decoupling epoch as well as present magnetic fields on galactic scales are sufficiently generated to satisfy observational bounds.

Inflationary cosmology and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe in non-minimal Yang-Mills-$F(R)$ gravity and non-minimal vector-$F(R)$ gravity

We study inflationary cosmology and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe in non-minimal Yang-Mills (YM) theory, in which the YM field couples to a function of the scalar curvature. It is shown that power-law inflation can be realized due to the non-minimal YM field-gravitational coupling which maybe caused by quantum corrections. Moreover, it is demonstrated that both inflation and the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe can be realized in a modified YM-$F(R)$ gravity which is consistent with solar system tests. Furthermore, it is shown that this result can be realized also in a non-minimal vector-$F(R)$ gravity. In addition, we consider the duality of the non-minimal electromagnetic theory and that of the non-minimal YM theory, and also discuss the cosmological reconstruction of the YM theory.

Hypermagnetic Baryogenesis

We study a new scenario for baryogenesis due to the spontaneous breaking of the $CPT$ invariance through the interaction between a baryon current and a hypermagnetic helicity. The hypermagnetic helicity (Chern-Simons number) of $U(1)_Y$ provides a $CPT$ violation background for the generation of baryons via sphaleron processes, which protects these baryons from the sphaleron wash-out effect in thermal equilibrium. It is shown that if the present amplitude of the resultant magnetic fields are sufficiently large, for a wide range mass scale (from TeV to the Planck scale), the observational magnitude of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be realized.

Inflation and late-time cosmic acceleration in non-minimal Maxwell-$F(R)$ gravity and the generation of large-scale magnetic fields

We study inflation and late-time acceleration in the expansion of the universe in non-minimal electromagnetism, in which the electromagnetic field couples to the scalar curvature function. It is shown that power-law inflation can be realized due to the non-minimal gravitational coupling of the electromagnetic field, and that large-scale magnetic fields can be generated due to the breaking of the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic field through its non-minimal gravitational coupling. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that both inflation and the late-time acceleration of the universe can be realized in a modified Maxwell-$F(R)$ gravity which is consistent with solar system tests and cosmological bounds and free of instabilities. At small curvature typical for current universe the standard Maxwell theory is recovered. We also consider classically equivalent form of non-minimal Maxwell-$F(R)$ gravity, and propose the origin of the non-minimal gravitational coupling function based on renormalization-group considerations.

The interrelation between the generation of large-scale electric fields and that of large-scale magnetic fields during inflation

The interrelation between the generation of large-scale electric fields and that of large-scale magnetic fields due to the breaking of the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic field in inflationary cosmology is studied. It is shown that if large-scale magnetic fields with a sufficiently large amplitude are generated during inflation, the generation of large-scale electric fields is suppressed, and vice versa. Furthermore, a physical interpretation of the result and its cosmological significance are considered.

Accelerating Cosmologies in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory with Dilaton

We study cosmological solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton. We show that the field equations are cast into an autonomous system for flat internal and external spaces, and derive all the fixed points in the system. We also examine the time evolution of the solutions and whether the solutions can give (transient) accelerated expansion of our four-dimensional space in the Einstein frame.

Property of the spectrum of large-scale magnetic fields from inflation

The property of the spectrum of large-scale magnetic fields generated due to the breaking of the conformal invariance of the Maxwell theory through some mechanism in inflationary cosmology is studied. It is shown that the spectrum of the generated magnetic fields should not be perfectly scale-invariant but be slightly red so that the amplitude of large-scale magnetic fields can be stronger than $\sim 10^{-12}$G at the present time. This analysis is performed by assuming the absence of amplification due to the late-time action of some dynamo (or similar) mechanism.

Baryon asymmetry from hypermagnetic helicity in dilaton hypercharge electromagnetism

The generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) from the hypermagnetic helicity, the physical interpretation of which is given in terms of hypermagnetic knots, is studied in inflationary cosmology, taking into account the breaking of the conformal invariance of hypercharge electromagnetic fields through both a coupling with the dilaton and that with a pseudoscalar field. It is shown that if the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) is strongly first order and the present amplitude of the generated magnetic fields on the horizon scale is sufficiently large, a baryon asymmetry with a sufficient magnitude to account for the observed baryon to entropy ratio can be generated.

Large-scale magnetic fields in the inflationary universe

The generation of large-scale magnetic fields is studied in inflationary cosmology. We consider the violation of the conformal invariance of the Maxwell field by dilatonic as well as non-minimal gravitational couplings. We derive a general formula for the spectrum of large-scale magnetic fields for a general form of the coupling term and the formula for the spectral index. The result tells us clearly the (necessary) condition for the generation of magnetic fields with sufficiently large amplitude.

Curvaton Scenario in the Presence of Two Dilatons Coupled to the Scalar Curvature

The possibility of the realization of a curvaton scenario is studied in a theory in which two dilatons are introduced along with coupling to the scalar curvature. It is shown that when the two dilatons have an approximate O(2) symmetric coupling, a scalar field playing the role of the curvaton may exist in the framework of this theory without introducing any other scalar field for the curvaton. Thus the curvaton scenario can be realized, and in the simple version of the curvaton scenario, in which the curvaton potential is quadratic, the curvature perturbation with a sufficient amplitude and a nearly scale-invariant spectrum suggested by observations obtained from WMAP can be generated.
