Universal whirling magnetic orders in non-Heisenberg Tsai-type quasicrystal approximants

Magnetic orders of non-Heisenberg Tsai-type 1/1 approximant crystals (ACs) in the Au-Ga-Dy system were studied through bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. The results uncovered noncoplanar, ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin configurations whirling along [111] crystallographic axis, which is analogous to those observed in the Tb- and Ho-contained counterparts. The crystal electric field excitations similar to those in the Tb-based counterpart are also observed indicating the strong Ising-like magnetic anisotropy. These comprehensive experiments and analyses have revealed the existence of a universal mechanism that stabilizes noncoplanar FM and AFM structures in non-Heisenberg Tsai-type ACs, independent of the rare-earth species (Tb, Dy, Ho); FM intra-cluster interactions and strong Ising-like anisotropy.

Multipolar Phase Transition in the 4$f^2$ fcc lattice compound PrCdNi$_{4}$

Transport and magnetic properties of a 4$f^{2}$ fcc lattice compound, PrCdNi$_4$, were studied. The magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, follows the Curie--Weiss law from 300 K to 20 K, as expected for a free Pr$^{3+}$ ion. As the temperature decreases below 5 K, $χ(T)$ approaches a constant, indicating van-Vleck paramagnetic behavior. The specific heat, $C(T)$, displays a broad shoulder at around 4 K, which can be reproduced by a doublet triplet two-level model with an energy gap of 12 K. These results suggest a non-magnetic $Γ_3$ doublet ground state of the Pr$^{3+}$ ion in the cubic crystalline electric field. $C(T)$ exhibits a peak at $T_{\rm O}$ = 1.0 K and this peak remains robust against magnetic fields up to 5 T. In powder neutron diffraction measurements, no magnetic reflection was observed at 0.32 K $<$ $T_{\rm O}$. Two anomalies at $B$ = 2.1 and 5.3 T in magnetoresistance $ρ(B)$ at 0.05 K likely originate from switching in the order parameter. These results suggest that the phase transition at $T_{\rm O}$ is ascribed to an antiferro-type order of the electric quadrupole or magnetic octupole of the $Γ_3$ doublet in the 4$f^2$ fcc lattice.

Unveiling exotic magnetic phase diagram of a non-Heisenberg quasicrystal approximant

A magnetic phase diagram of the non-Heisenberg Tsai-type 1/1 Au-Ga-Tb approximant crystal (AC) has been established across a wide electron-per-atom (e/a) range via magnetization and powder neutron diffraction measurements. The diagram revealed exotic ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders that originate from the unique local spin icosahedron common to icosahedral quasicrystals (iQCs) and ACs; The noncoplanar whirling AFM order is stabilized as the ground state at the e/a of 1.72 or less whereas a noncoplanar whirling FM order was found at the larger e/a of 1.80, with magnetic moments tangential to the Tb icosahedron in both cases. Moreover, the FM/AFM phase selection rule was unveiled in terms of the nearest neighbour (J1) and next nearest neighbour (J2) interactions by numerical calculations on a non-Heisenberg single icosahedron. The present findings will pave the way for understanding the intriguing magnetic orders of not only non-Heisenberg FM/AFM ACs but also non-Heisenberg FM/AFM iQCs, the latter of which are yet to be discovered.

Atomic structure and magnetism of the Au-Ga-Ce 1/1 approximant crystal

We report a new Au-Ga-Ce 1/1 approximant crystal (AC) which possesses a significantly wide single-phase region of 53 - 70 at% Au and 13.6 - 15.1 at% Ce. Single crystal X-ray structural analyses reveal the existence of two types of structural degrees of freedom, i.e., the Au/Ga mixing sites and the fractional Ce occupancy site: the former enables a large variation in the electron concentration and the latter allows a variation in the occupancy of a magnetic impurity atom at the center of the Tsai-type cluster. Following these findings, the influences of two types of structural modifications on the magnetism are thoroughly investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the Au-Ga-Ce 1/1 AC. The spin-glass (SG) state is found to be the ground state over the entire single-phase region, showing a robust nature of the SG state against both structural modifications. In addition, a gigantic specific heat (C/T) is commonly observed at low temperatures for all the compositions, which is consistently explained as a consequence of the spin-freezing phenomenon, not of a heavy Fermion behavior as reported elsewhere. Moreover, the origin of the SG state in the 1/1 Au-Ga-Ce AC is attributed to the existence of non-magnetic atom disorder in the Au/Ga mixing sites. Furthermore, a Kondo behavior is observed in the electrical resistivity at low temperatures, which is enhanced by increasing the Ce concentration, verifying that a Ce atom introduced at the cluster center behaves as a Kondo impurity for the first time.

Unraveling the magnetic structure of YbNiSn single crystal via crystal growth and neutron diffraction

Neutron and x-ray diffraction experiments were performed on the ternary intermetallic compound YbNiSn, formerly categorized as a ferromagnetic Kondo compound. At zero field, an increase in scattering intensity was observed on top of allowed and forbidden nuclear reflections below Tc, breaking the reflection condition of the crystal symmetry Pnma. This indicates that the magnetic structure of YbNiSn is antiferromagnetic-type, rather than the previously proposed simple collinear ferromagnetic structure. Temperature dependence of the scattering intensity of the 011 reflection confirmed the magnetic ordering at 5.77(2) K. No incommensurate satellite reflection was observed at 2.5 K. By applying external magnetic field of 1 T along the a axis, the magnetic intensity at the nuclear-forbidden 001 position was suppressed, while a slight enhancement at the nuclear-allowed 002 position was observed. This suggests a spin-flip transition under the external magnetic field along the a axis in YbNiSn. The proposed magnetic structures at zero field and 1 T correspond to the magnetic space groups of Pn'm'a and Pnm'a', respectively. The piezomagnetic effect and the switch between the two magnetic space groups by the external stress, which could be detected by the anomalous Hall effect, are proposed.

Structural and magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{65}$Ga$_{21}$Tb$_{14}$

Magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{65}$Ga$_{21}$Tb$_{14}$ were investigated by the magnetization and the neutron diffraction experiments. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curve indicate dominant ferromagnetic interactions, while the whirling antiferromagnetic order was found from the neutron diffraction experiments. In the antiferromagnetic phase, the magnetic moments are aligned almost perpendicular to a pseudo five-fold symmetry axis, which should correspond to the easy-axis direction of a Tb atom. The magnetic properties similar to those of Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$ in spite of the difference in the electron-per-atom ratio suggest the robustness of the easy-axis anisotropy against the chemical substitution of the nonmagnetic atoms.

Strongly electron-correlated semimetal RuI$_3$ with a layered honeycomb structure

A polymorph of RuI$_3$ synthesized under high pressure was found to have a two-layered honeycomb structure. The resistivity of RuI$_3$ exhibits a semimetallic behavior, in contrast to insulating properties in $α$-RuCl$_3$. In addition, Pauli paramagnetic behavior was observed in the temperature dependence of a magnetic susceptibility and a nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$. The band structure calculations indicate that contribution of the I 5$p$ components to the low-energy $t_\mathrm{2g}$ bands effectively decreases Coulomb repulsion, leading to semimetallic properties. The physical properties also suggest strong electron correlations in RuI$_3$.

Magnetism of Kitaev spin-liquid candidate material RuBr$_3$

The ruthenium halide $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate for a Kitaev spin liquid. However, the microscopic model describing $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is still debated partly because of a lack of analogue materials for $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, which prevents tracking of electronic properties as functions of controlled interaction parameters. Here, we report a successful synthesis of RuBr$_{3}$. The material RuBr$_{3}$~possesses BiI$_3$-type structure (space group: $R\overline{3}$) where Ru$^{3+}$ form an ideal honeycomb lattice. Although RuBr$_{3}$ has a negative Weiss temperature, it undergoes a zigzag antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}=34$ K, as does $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Our analyses indicate that the Kitaev and non-Kitaev interactions can be modified in ruthenium trihalides by changing the ligand sites, which provides a new platform for exploring Kitaev spin liquids.

Antiferromagnetic order of ferromagnetically coupled dimers in the double pyrovanadate CaCoV$_2$O$_7$

Magnetic properties of the pyrovanadate CaCoV$_2$O$_7$ have been studied by means of the bulk magnetization and neutron powder diffraction measurements. Magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic phase shows Curie-Weiss behavior with negative Weiss temperature $Θ\simeq -22.5$ K, indicating dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. At $T_{\rm N} = 3.44$ K, CaCoV$_2$O$_7$ shows antiferromagnetic order, accompanied by a weak net ferromagnetic moment of $\sim 0.05$~$μ_{\rm B}/{\rm Co}^{2+}$. Neutron powder diffraction confirms the formation of antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}$. It was further confirmed from the magnetic structure determination that the two Co$^{2+}$ ions in the adjacent edge-sharing octahedra have almost parallel (ferromagnetic) spin arrangement, indicative of a formation of a ferromagnetic spin dimer. The antiferromagnetic order is, in turn, stabilized by sizable inter-dimer antiferromagnetic interactions.

Anisotropic Triangular Lattice Realized in Rhenium Oxychlorides A3ReO5Cl2 (A = Ba and Sr)

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of two new quantum antiferromagnets A3ReO5Cl2 (A = Sr and Ba). The crystal structure is isostructural with the mineral pinalite Pb3WO5Cl2, in which the Re6+ ion is square-pyramidally coordinated by five oxide atoms, and forms an anisotropic triangular lattice (ATL) made of S = 1/2 spins. The magnetic interactions J and J' in the ATL are estimated from magnetic susceptibilities to be 19.5 (44.9) and 9.2 (19.3) K, respectively, with J'/J = 0.47 (0.43) for A = Ba (Sr). For each compound, heat capacity at low temperatures shows a large T-linear component with no signature of long-range magnetic order above 2 K, which suggests a gapless spin liquid state of one-dimensional character of the J chains in spite of the significantly large J' couplings. This is a consequence of one-dimensionalization by geometrical frustration in the ATL magnet; a similar phenomenon has been observed in two compounds with slightly smaller J'/J values: Cs2CuCl4 (J'/J = 0.3) and the related compound Ca3ReO5Cl2 (0.32). Our findings demonstrate that 5d mixed-anion compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore novel quantum magnetism.

Effect of Ge-substitution on Magnetic Properties in the Itinerant Chiral Magnet MnSi

We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_\mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $M_\mathrm{s}$ and the critical field to the fully polarized state $H_\mathrm{c2}$. In contrast to the saturation behavior of $T_\mathrm{c}$, those parameters increase linearly up to the highest Ge concentration investigated. In the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, we found enlargement of the skyrmion phase region for large $x$ samples. We, furthermore, observed the non-linear behavior of helical modulation vector $k$ as a function of Ge concentration, which can be described qualitatively using the mean field approximation.

One-dimensionalization by Geometrical Frustration in the Anisotropic Triangular Lattice of the 5d Quantum Antiferromagnet Ca3ReO5Cl2

We report on the emergence of antiferromagnetic spin chains from two-dimensionally aligned spins on the anisotropic triangular lattice (ATL) in the insulating calcium rhenium oxychloride Ca3ReO5Cl2. The compound contains Re6+ ions each with one unpaired electron in the dxy orbital, which are arranged to form a spin-1/2 ATL with J'/J ~ 0.32 and J = 41 K, where J and J' are magnetic interactions in and between the chains, respectively. In spite of the apparent two dimensionality, we observe clear evidence of a gapless spin liquid that is characteristic of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. This one-dimensionalization must be caused by geometrical frustration: growing antiferromagnetic correlations in every chain effectively cancel out inter-chain zigzag couplings at low temperature. Ca3ReO5Cl2 provides us with a detailed insight into the interesting physics of the ATL antiferromagnet, especially via comparison with the typical ATL compound Cs2CuCl4.

Triplon band splitting and topologically protected edge states in the dimerized antiferromagnet

The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, through inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The excitation spectrum exhibits two triplon bands and a clear band gap between them due to a small alternation in interdimer exchange interactions along the $a$-direction, which is consistent with the crystal structure. The presence of topologically protected edge states is indicated by a bipartite nature of the lattice.

Degenerate ground state in the classical pyrochlore antiferromagnet Na$_3$Mn(CO$_3$)$_2$Cl

In an ideal classical pyrochlore antiferromagnet without perturbations, an infinite degeneracy at a ground state leads to absence of a magnetic order and spin-glass transition. Here we present Na$_3$Mn(CO$_3$)$_2$Cl as a new candidate compound where classical spins are coupled antiferromagnetically on the pyrochlore lattice, and report its structural and magnetic properties. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity, and the magnetization curve are consistent with those of an $S$ = 5/2 pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions of 2 K. Neither an apparent signature of a spin-glass transition nor a magnetic order is detected in magnetization and heat capacity measurements, or powder neutron diffraction experiments. On the other hand, an antiferromagnetic short-range order from the nearest neighbors is evidenced by the $Q$-dependence of the diffuse scattering which develops around 0.85 Å$^{-1}$. A high degeneracy near the ground state in Na$_3$Mn(CO$_3$)$_2$Cl is supported by the magnetic entropy estimated as almost 4 J K$^{-2}$ mol$^{-1}$ at 0.5 K.

Collinear Spin-density-wave Order and Anisotropic Spin Fluctuations in the Frustrated $J_1$--$J_2$ Chain Magnet NaCuMoO$_4$(OH)

The phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional magnet NaCuMoO$_4$(OH) is established through single-crystal NMR and heat-capacity measurements. The $^{23}$Na and $^1$H NMR experiments indicate a spiral and a collinear spin-density-wave (SDW) order below and above $B_c$ = 1.5-1.8 T, respectively. Moreover, in the paramagnetic state above the SDW transition temperature, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates anisotropic spin fluctuations that have gapped excitations in the transverse spectrum but gapless ones in the longitudinal spectrum. These static and dynamic properties are well described by a theoretical model assuming quasi-one-dimensional chains with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions $J_2$ ($J_1$-$J_2$ chains). Because of the excellent crystal quality and good one dimensionality, NaCuMoO$_4$(OH) is a promising compound to elucidate the unique physics of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ chain.

Dynamics of Bound Magnon Pairs in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Frustrated Magnet LiCuVO_4

We report on the dynamics of the spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO$\mathrm{_4}$ measured by nuclear spin relaxation in high magnetic fields 10--34 T, in which the ground state has spin-density-wave order. The spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase exhibit striking anisotropy with respect to the magnetic field. The transverse excitation spectrum probed by $^{51}$V nuclei has an excitation gap, which increases with field. On the other hand, the gapless longitudinal fluctuations sensed by $^7$Li nuclei grow with lowering temperature, but tend to be suppressed with increasing field. Such anisotropic spin dynamics and its field dependence agree with the theoretical predictions and are ascribed to the formation of bound magnon pairs, a remarkable consequence of the frustration between ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions.

Anisotropic Field-Induced Gap in Quasi-One-Dimensional Antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH)

We investigated magnetic and thermodynamic properties of $S$ = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO$_4$(OH) through single crystalline magnetization and heat capacity measurements. At zero field, it behaves as a uniform $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $J$ = 238 K, and exhibits a canted antiferromagnetism below $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 1.52 K. In addition, a magnetic field $H$ induces the anisotropy in magnetization and opens a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. These properties are understood in terms of an effective staggered field induced by staggered g-tensors and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. Temperature-dependencies of the heat capacity and their field variations are consistent with those expected for quantum sine-Gordon model, indicating that spin excitations consist of soliton, anti-soliton and breather modes. From field-dependencies of the soliton mass, the staggered field normalized by the uniform field $c_\mathrm{s}$ is estimated as 0.041, 0.174, and 0.030, for $H \parallel a$, $b$, and $c$, respectively. Such a large variation of $c_\mathrm{s}$ is understood as the combination of staggered g-tensors and DM interactions which induce the staggered field in the opposite direction for $H \parallel a$ and $c$ but almost the same direction for $H \parallel b$ at each Cu site.

Structural anomalies and short-range magnetic correlations in the orbitally degenerated system Sr$_2$VO$_4$

We report on the electronic ground state of a layered perovskite vanadium oxide Sr$_2$VO$_4$ studied by the combined use of synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques, where $μ$SR measurements were extended down to 30 mK. We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.
