Factorization and Gauge Invariance of Twist-3 Cross Section for Single Spin Asymmetry

We prove factorization and gauge invariance of the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section in the leading order perturbative QCD, which was missing in the previous literature. We emphasize that the consistency relation from the Ward identities for color gauge invariance is crucial to guarantee the cancelation among the various gauge-noninvariant contributions in the cross section. This relation also proves the absence of the "derivative" terms in the cross section corresponding to the hard-pole and soft-fermion-pole contributions. Applying the formalism to SIDIS, $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$, we have derived the complete cross section associated with the twist-3 distribution for the transversely polarized nucleon.

Novel Master Formula for Twist-3 Soft-Gluon-Pole Mechanism to Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry

We prove that twist-3 soft-gluon-pole (SGP) cross section for single spin asymmetries is determined by a certain ``primordial'' twist-2 cross section up to kinematic and color factors in the leading order perturbative QCD. This unveils universal structure behind the SGP cross sections in a variety of hard processes, and also the special role of the scale invariance in the corresponding primordial cross section, which leads to remarkable simplification of the SGP cross sections for the production of massless particle, such as those for pion production p^\uparrow p \to πX and direct-photon production p^\uparrow p \to γX.

Soft gluon corrections to double transverse-spin asymmetries for small-$Q_T$ dilepton production at RHIC and J-PARC

We calculate the double transverse-spin asymmetries, $\aqt$, in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process at the transverse-momentum $Q_T$ of the produced lepton pair. We perform all-order resummation of the logarithmically enhanced contributions in the relevant Drell-Yan cross sections at small $Q_T$, which are due to multiple soft gluon emission in QCD, up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The asymmetries $\aqt$ to be observed in polarized experiments at RHIC and J-PARC are studied numerically as a function of $Q_T$. We show that the effects of the soft gluon resummation to the polarized and unpolarized cross sections largely cancel in $\aqt$, but the significant corrections still remain and are crucial for making a reliable QCD prediction of $\aqt$. In particular, the soft gluon corrections enhance $\aqt$ considerably in the small $Q_T$ region compared with the asymmetry in the fixed-order $α_s$ perturbation theory. We also derive a novel asymptotic formula which embodies those remarkable features of $\aqt$ at small $Q_T$ in a compact analytic form and is useful to extract the transversity $δq(x)$ from the experimental data.

Universal Structure of Twist-3 Soft-Gluon-Pole Cross Sections for Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry

We prove that twist-3 soft-gluon-pole (SGP) cross section for single spin asymmetries (SSA) is determined by a certain ``primordial'' twist-2 cross section up to kinematic and color factors in the leading order perturbative QCD. In particular, for the processes in which the partonic hard scattering occurs among massless partons, the invariance of the ``primordial'' partonic cross section under scale transformation leads to remarkable simplification of the SGP cross section, reproducing compact form that was recently observed for pion production $p^\uparrow p\to πX$ and direct-photon production $p^\uparrow p\to γX$.

Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry for Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

Establishing the twist-3 formalsim for the single transverse spin asymmetry, we present a complete single-spin-dependent cross section for SIDIS, $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$, associated with the twist-3 distribution for the transversely polarized nucleon. We emphasize that the consistency condition from the Ward identities for color gauge invariance is crucial to prove factorization property of the cross section.

A New Approach for Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries from Twist-3 Soft-Gluon Mechanism

A dominant QCD mechanism for the single transverse-spin asymmetry in hard processes is induced by the twist-3 quark-gluon correlations inside nucleon, combined with the soft-gluonic poles to produce the interfering phase for the associated partonic hard scattering. It is shown that the corresponding interfering amplitude can be calculated entirely in terms of the partonic Born cross section which participates in the twist-2 cross section formula for the spin-averaged process.

QCD Prediction of $A_{TT}$ for Small $Q_T$ Dimuon Production in $pp$ and $p\bar{p} Collisions

We present QCD prediction of double-spin asymmetries ($A_{TT}$) in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process at small transverse momentum $Q_T$ of dimuon. Resummation of large logarithmic corrections, relevant in small $Q_T$ region, is performed up to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. $A_{TT}$ at RHIC, J-PARC and GSI are studied numerically in the corresponding kinematic regions. We show that the large $A_{TT}$ is obtained for small $Q_T$ and moderate energies.

Twist-3 Formalism for Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry Reexamined: Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) for the pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$, in the framework of the collinear factorization. We derive the complete cross section formula associated with the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions for the transversely polarized nucleon, including all types of pole (hard-pole, soft-fermion-pole and soft-gluon-pole) contributions which produce the strong interaction phase necessary for SSA. We prove that the partonic hard part from each pole contribution satisfies certain constraints from Ward identities for color gauge invariance. We demonstrate that the use of these new constraints is crucial to reorganize the collinear expansion of the Feynman diagrams into manifestly gauge-invariant form so as to obtain the factorization formula for the cross section in terms of a complete set of the twist-3 distributions without any double counting. It also provides a simpler method for the actual calculation. We also present a simple estimate of SSA based on our cross section formula, using a model for the ``soft-gluon-pole function'' that represents the relevant twist-3 quark-gluon correlation, and compare the magnitude of the terms involving the derivative of the soft-gluon-pole function with that of the ``non-derivative'' terms.

Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry for Large-p_T Pion Production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) for the pion production with large transverse momentum p_T in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$. We derive the twist-3 cross section formula for SSA, focussing on the soft-gluon-pole contributions associated with the twist-3 distribution for the nucleon and with the twist-3 fragmentation function for the pion. We present a simple estimate of the asymmetries due to each twist-3 effect from nucleon and pion, respectively, by fixing the overall strength of the relevant nonperturbative quantities by the data on the SSA A_N in $p^\uparrow p\toπX$ collision.

The Dilepton Q_T Spectrum in Transversely Polarized Drell-Yan Process in QCD

We discuss the transverse momentum Q_T distribution of Drell-Yan pair, produced in collisions of transversely polarized protons. We calculate the transversely polarized Drell-Yan cross section up to order α_s in the dimensional regularization scheme, which gives QCD prediction at large Q_T. For small Q_T region, we include all-orders resummation of large logarithms due to emission of soft gluons up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. At intermediate Q_T region, the resummation formula is matched with the fixed-order α_s perturbative results in a systematic way, so that we derive the cross section with uniform accuracy over the entire range of Q_T.

Unravelling soft components in the shape function for inclusive B decays

In the heavy-quark limit, the decay spectrum for radiative and semileptonic inclusive B-meson decays is determined by a universal structure function, i.e. the shape function. We study the constraints on the bilocal heavy-quark operator for the shape function from the QCD equations of motion and heavy-quark symmetry, and we obtain a new basis of nonlocal operators that reveals relevant soft components in the shape function. Those nonlocal operators represent the ``kinetic energy distribution'' of the b-quark inside the B-meson and the four-parton correlations with additional quarks and gluons. A corresponding local operator basis relevant for relating the shape function to HQET parameters is also given, and novel effects of the quark-gluon correlations are discussed.

Transverse quark motion inside charmonia in diffractive photo- and electroproductions

We reexamine the Fermi motion effects on the diffractive photo- and electroproductions of heavy vector-mesons, J/psi and psi', off a nucleon in the leading ln(Q^2/Lambda_QCD^2) approximation (LLA) of QCD. We take into account all the Fermi motion corrections arising from the relative motion of quarks inside the charmonium, which is treated as a nonrelativistic bound state of c and \bar{c}. Our key ingredients are the correct spin structure for the ^3S_1 c\bar{c} bound state, the off-shellness in the c\bar{c} \to J/psi (psi') hadronization vertex, and the modification of the gluon's longitudinal momentum fraction probed by the process, due to the relative motion between c and \bar{c}. We demonstrate that these three contributions produce the new Fermi motion effects in the LLA diffractive amplitude in QCD. It is found that our new effects moderate the strong suppression of the diffractive J/psi (psi') production cross sections, which was reported in the previous works on the Fermi motion effects. We emphasize the role of the transverse quark motion for the heavy meson production, and also discuss the strong helicity dependence of the Fermi motion effects and its implication in the longitudinal to transverse production ratio, sigma_L/sigma_T.

B meson light-cone wavefunctions in the heavy quark limit

We present a systematic study of the B meson light-cone wavefunctions in QCD in the heavy-quark limit. We construct model-independent formulae for the light-cone wavefunctions in terms of independent dynamical degrees of freedom, which exactly satisfy the QCD equations of motion and constraints from heavy-quark symmetry. The results demonstrate novel behaviors of longitudinal as well as transverse momentum distribution in the B mesons.

Transverse Momentum Distribution in the B Mesons in the Heavy-quark Limit: the Wandzura-Wilczek Part

In the heavy-quark limit, the valence Fock-state components in the B mesons are described by a set of two light-cone wavefunctions. We show that these two wavefunctions obey simple coupled differential equations, which are based on the equations of motion in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET), and the analytic solutions for them are obtained. The results generalize the recently obtained longitudinal-momentum distribution in the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation by including the transverse momenta. We find that the transverse momentum distribution depends on the longitudinal momentum of the constituents, and that the wavefunctions damp very slowly for large transverse separation between quark and antiquark.

B meson light-cone distribution amplitudes in the heavy-quark limit

We investigate the B meson light-cone distribution amplitudes in the heavy-quark limit which are relevant for the QCD factorization approach for the exclusive B meson decays. We derive exact relations between two- and three-particle distribution amplitudes from the QCD equations of motion and heavy-quark symmetry constraint. As solution of these relations, we give representations for the quark-antiquark distribution amplitudes in terms of independent dynamical degrees of freedom. In particular, we find that the Wandzura-Wilczek-type contributions are determined uniquely in analytic form in terms of \barΛ, a fundamental mass parameter of heavy-quark effective theory, and that both leading- and higher-twist distribution amplitudes receive the contributions of multi-particle states with additional gluons.
