Higgs boson mass limits in perturbative unification theories

Motivated in part by recent demonstrations that electroweak unification into a simple group may occur at a low scale, we detail the requirements on the Higgs mass if the unification is to be perturbative. We do this for the Standard Model effective theory, minimal supersymmetry, and next-to-minimal supersymmetry with an additional singlet field. Within the Standard Model framework, we find that perturbative unification with sin2(thetaW)=1/4 occurs at Lambda=3.8 TeV and requires mh<460 GeV, whereas perturbative unification with sin2(thetaW)=3/8 requires mh<200 GeV. In supersymmetry, the presentation of the Higgs mass predictions can be significantly simplified, yet remain meaningful, by using a single supersymmetry breaking parameter Delta_S. We present Higgs mass limits in terms of Delta_S for the minimal supersymmetric model and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric model. We show that in next-to-minimal supersymmetry, the Higgs mass upper limit can be as large as 500 GeV even for moderate supersymmetry masses if the perturbative unification scale is low (e.g., Lambda=10 TeV).

D-term challenges for supersymmetric gauged abelian flavor symmetries

Attention is called to potentially dangerous lepton-flavor violation (LFV) induced by the D-terms of additional U(1) flavor-dependent gauge symmetries in supersymmetric models. In such models, LFV persists despite an arbitrarily high scale for the U(1) breaking and despite arbitrarily small gauge couplings. In light of recent experimental observations of neutrino oscillations, these models are highly motivated experimentally and theoretically. Taking into account also the recent measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, strong bounds are calculated for the magnitude of the D-term-induced LFV. Using current data we find that the slepton mass-mixing parameter (m_{\tilde l_L}^2)_{12}/m_{\tilde l_L}^2 is required to be less than O(10^{-4}) -- a value perhaps already too low compared to expectations. Near future probes will increase sensitivity to 10^{-6}.

Phenomenological implications of neutrinos in extra dimensions

Standard Model singlet neutrinos propagating in extra dimensions induce small Dirac neutrino masses. While it seems rather unlikely that their Kaluza-Klein excitations directly participate in the observed neutrino oscillations, their virtual exchange may lead to detectable signatures in future neutrino experiments and in rare charged lepton processes. We show how these effects can be described by specific dimension-six effective operators and discuss their experimental signals.

Neutrino masses, muon g-2, and lepton-flavour violation in the supersymmetric see-saw model

In the light of the recent muon (g_mu-2) result by the E821 experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, we study the event rates of the charged lepton-flavour-violating (LFV) processes in the supersymmetric standard model (SUSY SM) with the heavy right-handed neutrinos (SUSY see-saw model). Since the left-handed sleptons get the LFV masses via the neutrino Yukawa interaction in this model, the event rate of mu->e gamma and the SUSY-SM correction to (g_mu-2)/2 (δa_mu^{SUSY}) are strongly correlated. When the left-handed sleptons have a LFV mass between the first and second generations ((m^2_L)_{12}) in the mass matrix, it should be suppressed by \sim 10^{-3} ({10^-9}/δa_mu^{SUSY}) compared with the diagonal components (m_{SUSY}^2), from the current experimental bound on mu-> e gamma. The recent (g_mu-2) result indicates {δa_mu^{SUSY}}\sim 10^{-9}. The future charged LFV experiments could cover (m^2_L)_{12}/m_{SUSY}^2\gsim 10^{-(5-6)}. These experiments will give a significant impact on the flavour models and the SUSY-breaking models. In the SUSY see-saw model (m^2_L)_{12} is proportional to square of the tau-neutrino Yukawa-coupling constant. In the typical models where the neutrino-oscillation results are explained and the top-quark and tau-neutrino Yukawa couplings are unified at the GUT scale, a large LFV mass of (m^2_L)_{12}/m_{SUSY}^2\gsim 10^{-4} is generated, and the large LFV event rates are predicted. We impose a so-called no-scale condition for the SUSY-breaking parameters at the GUT scale, which suppresses the FCNC processes, and derive the conservative lower bound on mu-> egamma. The predicted Br(mu-> e gamma) could be covered at the future LFV experiments.

Neutrino Masses and Lepton-Flavor Violation in Supersymmetric Models with lopsided Froggatt-Nielsen charges

We analyze in detail lepton-flavor violation (LFV) in the charged-lepton sector such as $μ\to e γ$, $τ\to μγ$, $μ\to eee$ and the $μ\to e$ conversion in nuclei, within the framework of supersymmetric models with lopsided Froggatt--Nielsen charges, in which the large mixing in the neutrino sector as well as small mixings in the quark sector can be naturally accommodated. We show that the present experimental limits on the LFV processes already exclude some of the models. The future proposed search for LFV, especially in muon processes, can provide a significant probe to this framework. We also stress the importance of the measurement of $U^{MNS}_{e3}$ in neutrino experiments, and the fact that the KamLAND experiment could play a significant role to test a certain class of models.

Lepton-Flavour-Violation in SUSY Models with and without R-parity

We discuss Lepton-Flavour-Violating phenomena such as $μ\to e γ$, $μ\to eee$, and $μ\to e$ conversion in nuclei in SUSY models with and without R-parity. We stress that experimental searches for all the LFV processes are important to distinguish between the different models.

The Phenomenology of SUSY models with a Gluino LSP

In this paper we study the experimental consequences of a theory which naturally has a heavy, stable (or almost stable) gluino. We define the boundary conditions at a messenger scale $M \sim 10^{14}$ GeV which lead to this alternative phenomenologically acceptable version of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In this theory, either the gluino or the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle [LSP]. If the gravitino is the LSP, then the gluino is the next-to-LSP with a lifetime on the order of 100 years. In either case, the gluino is (for all practical purposes) a stable particle with respect to experiments at high energy accelerators. Thus the standard missing energy signature for SUSY fails. A stable gluino forms a color singlet hadron, the lightest of which is assumed to be an isoscalar gluino-gluon bound state ($R_0$). The $R_0$ has strong interactions and will interact in a hadronic calorimeter; depositing some fraction of its kinetic energy. Finally, in the case the gravitino is the LSP, bounds from searches for stable heavy isotopes of hydrogen or oxygen do not apply to the metastable $R_0$.

Phenomenological Aspects of a Direct-transmission Model of Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking with the Gravitino Mass $m_{3/2} < 1~\KEV$

We analyze a direct-transmission model of dynamical SUSY breaking previously proposed. In the model the gravitino mass is naturally smaller than $1~\KEV$, which is required from the standard cosmology. We find that there are many distinguishable features from in other models: for example the so-called GUT relation among the gaugino masses does not hold even if we consider the GUT models. Furthermore, the gauginos are always lighter than the sfermions since the gaugino masses have extra suppression factors. We also discuss a collider signature ``$γγ+$ missing energy'' in the present model.

Dynamical SUSY Breaking with a Hybrid Messenger Sector

In this paper we present a dynamical model of SUSY breaking with a hybrid messenger sector. SUSY is broken dynamically at a scale of order $10^9$ GeV via strong SU(2) gauge interactions. SUSY breaking is then transmitted to the observable sector via two distinct sources: (1) messengers, carrying Standard Model gauge quantum numbers, with the messenger mass of order $10^{15}$ GeV, and (2) the D term of an anomalous U(1)$_X$. The model is quite constrained. The messenger scale is fixed by the Fayet-Iliopoulos term for the anomalous U(1)$_X$ interaction. In addition, we show that the D term SUSY breaking contributions to squark and slepton masses are "naturally" the same order as those coming from the messengers.
