Fate of Pomeranchuk effect in ultrahigh magnetic fields

The Pomeranchuk effect is a counterintuitive phenomenon where liquid helium-3 (3He) solidifies under specific pressures, not when cooled, but when heated. This behaviour originates from the magnetic entropy of nuclear spins, suggesting a magnetic field should influence it. However, its detailed response to magnetic fields remains elusive due to the small nuclear magneton of 3He and lack of analogous fermion systems. Here, we show that an electron system also exhibit the Pomeranchuk effect, where the Fermi liquid state solidifies in a high magnetic field, unlike conventional electron systems where a field melts an electron solid into a metal. Remarkably, the electron system displays a reentrant liquid state in ultrahigh fields. These responses are explained by changes in magnetic entropy and magnetisation, extending the underlying physics to 3He. Our findings clarify magnetic-field impact on the Pomeranchuk effect and open avenues for magnetic control of chemical interactions.

Ultrasonic observation of small Fermi surfaces in La$T$In$_5$ ($T$ = Co, Rh, Ir)

We performed high-field ultrasonic measurements on La$T$In$_5$ ($T$ = Co, Rh, Ir) to reveal the origin of the small Fermi surface that was recently observed in LaRhIn$_5$ with an oscillation frequency of 6.8 T. We observed quantum oscillations originating from this Fermi surface in LaRhIn$_5$. In addition, we revealed that LaCoIn$_5$ and LaIrIn$_5$ exhibit quantum osciilations with frequencies below 100 T, indicating hidden Fermi surfaces in these compounds. Furthermore, Co-substituted LaRhIn$_5$ exhibited quantum oscillations with a frequency of 10 T. Our results suggest that the small Fermi surface originates from bulk properties and that $3d$ electrons of the transition metal contribute to its formation.

Dominant Kitaev Interaction and Field-induced Quantum Disordered Phase in the Cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The identification of quantum spin liquid phases in Kitaev candidate materials remains a major experimental challenge. Since most Kitaev candidates develop antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at low temperatures, currently there are great interest on the field-induced magnetic disordered phase in these compounds, that are distinct from (partially) polarized states. Recently, a cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has emerged as a promising Kitaev candidate with high-spin $t^{5}_{2g}e^2_g$ configuration and spin-orbit entangled $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ honeycomb lattice system. There are intensive studies on field-induced magnetic states and phase transitions under in-plane magnetic fields. In this study, we propose an intermediate disordered phase induced by an out-of-plane field along the $c$-axis, through high-field magnetization and magnetocaloric effect measurements. To explain the high-field behavior of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, we develop an effective $K$-$J$-$\Gamma$-$\Gamma^{\prime}$ spin model featuring a dominant AFM Kitaev interaction. This framework uncovers an intermediate quantum spin liquid phase, establishing the material as a unique platform for exploring Kitaev physics and field-induced quantum-disordered states.

Stroboscopic Time-of-Flight Neutron Diffraction in Long Pulsed Magnetic Fields

We present proof-of-principle experiments of stroboscopic time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction in long pulsed magnetic fields. By utilizing electric double-layer capacitors, we developed a long pulsed magnet for neutron diffraction measurements, which generates pulsed magnetic fields with the full widths at the half maximum of more than $10^2$ ms. The field variation is slow enough to be approximated as a steady field within the time scale of a polychromatic neutron pulse passing through a sample placed in a distance of the order of $10^1$ m from the neutron source. This enables us to efficiently explore the reciprocal space using a wide range of neutron wavelength in high magnetic fields. We applied this technique to investigate field-induced magnetic phases in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets CuFe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_2$ ($x=0, 0.035$).

Partial Hydrogenation of N-heteropentacene: Impact on molecular packing and electronic structure

Four-nitrogen-containing 5,6,13,14-Tetraazapentacene (BTANC) has attracted attention as a new n-type organic semiconductor with a rigid crystalline phase due to intermolecular CH-N hydrogen bonding. However, in the thin film transistor of BTANC, poor carrier transport properties and low stability in the ambient condition have been reported so far; thus further refining and understanding of the thin film of BTANC will be required. Here, by means of carefully-controlled vacuum deposition of BTANC in the narrow window of temperature avoiding impurity sublimation and thermal degradation of molecules, we produced a well-defined monolayer on Cu(111) for molecular-level investigations. Synchrotron photoemission of the monolayer revealed a noticeable alteration of the chemical state of N atoms, which is unexpected for the pure BTANC molecule. In addition, molecular imaging of the monolayer by scanning tunneling microscope (STM) revealed that the molecular packing structure in the monolayer significantly differed from that in the single crystal of BTANC. These observations can be interpreted as a result of the partial hydrogenation of N atoms in BTANC and the emergence of the NH-N type intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the monolayer. These findings will provide a general remark and strategy to control the molecular packing structure and electronic property in the molecular films of the nitrogen-containing acenes, by means of controlled hydrogenation.

Contrasting Magnetic Structures in SrLaCuSbO$_{6}$ and SrLaCuNbO$_{6}$: Spin-1/2 Quasi-Square-Lattice $J_1 {-} J_2$ Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

We report the magnetic properties of the double perovskites SrLaCuSbO$_6$ (SLCSO) and SrLaCuNbO$_6$ (SLCNO). The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities of both compounds shows a broad maximum characteristic of an $S\,=\,1/2$ square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Magnetic ordering occurs at $T_{\rm N}\,{=}\,13.6$ and 15.7 K for SLCSO and SLCNO, respectively. Neutron powder diffraction measurements reveal contrasting spin structures in both compounds. The spin structures of SLCSO and SLCNO below $T_{\rm N}$ are Néel antiferromagnetic and collinear antiferromagnetic, respectively. This result demonstrates that the nearest-neighbor interaction is dominant in SLCSO, whereas the next-nearest-neighbor interaction is dominant in SLCNO. The magnitude of the ordered moment was evaluated at 3.5 K to be $m\,{=}\,0.39(3)\,μ_{\rm B}$ for SLCSO and $0.37(1)\,μ_{\rm B}$ for SLCNO, which are significantly smaller than those calculated using linear spin wave theory. We infer that the small ordered moment is caused by the effect of exchange bond randomness arising from the site disorder of Sr and La ions.

NMR measurements in dynamically controlled field pulse

We present the architecture of the versatile NMR spectrometer with software-defined radio (SDR) technology and its application to the dynamically controlled pulsed magnetic fields. The pulse-field technology is the only solution to access magnetic fields greater than 50 T, but the NMR experiment in the pulsed magnetic field was difficult because of the continuously changing field strength. The dynamically controlled field pulse allows us to perform NMR experiment in a quasi-steady field condition by creating a constant magnetic field for a short time around the peak of the field pulse. We confirmed the reproducibility of the field pulses using the NMR spectroscopy as a high precision magnetometer. With the highly reproducible field strength we succeeded in measuring the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, which had never been measured by the pulse-field NMR experiment without dynamic field control. We also implement the NMR spectrum measurement with both the frequency-sweep and field-sweep modes and discuss the appropriate choice of these modes depending on the magnetic properties of sample to be measured. This development, with further improvement at a long-duration field pulse, will innovate the microscopic measurement in extremely high magnetic fields.

Emergence of Frustrated Short-Range Order above Long-Range Order in the $S=1/2$ Kagome Antiferromagnet CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$D$_2$O

We report on the low-energy dynamics in the kagome antiferromagnet CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$D$_2$O (Ca-kapellasite) as studied by use of $^2$D-NMR measurements. Previous $^{35}$Cl-NMR measurements revealed that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) shows two peaks at temperatures, $T^{\ast} = 7.2$ K and $T_s \simeq 25$ K. While the low-temperature peak at $T^{\ast}$ is ascribed to the critical fluctuations near the long-range magnetic ordering, the origin of the high-temperature peak has not been fully understood. From the $1/T_1$ measurements on the D sites at the OD groups (D$_{\rm OD}$), we find no peak at $T_s$, evidencing that the high-temperature peak is not related to the molecular dynamics of the OD groups. We discuss the possibility of a frustration-induced short-range ordered state below $T_s$ before the long-range order is stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We also observed static internal fields at the D$_{\rm OD}$ site in the long-range ordered state below $T^{\ast}$, and confirm the previously proposed negative-chirality $q=0$ magnetic structure.

Symmetry lowering on the field-induced commensurate phase in CeRhIn$_5$

Temperature dependence of the $^{115}$In-NMR spectra of CeRhIn$_5$ is studied with the external magnetic fields 10$^\circ$ off the [100] and [001] axes. Our detailed analyses confirm that the AFM3 phase breaks the four-fold spin symmetry with the commensurate ordering vector of $Q = (0.5, 0.5,0.25)$. Based on the observation of anistropic hyperfine fields, we also propose the symmetry lowering of the electronic structure in the AFM3 phase.

Valence-Bond-Glass State with Singlet Gap in the Spin-1/2 Square-Lattice Random $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$

The double-perovskite compounds Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are magnetically described as quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice $J_1{-}J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets with predominant $J_1$ and $J_2$ exchange interactions, respectively. We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with randomness in the magnitudes of $J_1$ and $J_2$. It was found that the low-temperature specific heat for $0.1\leq x \leq 0.5$ has a large component proportional to the temperature $T$ above 1.2 K, although the low-temperature specific heat for the two parent systems is approximately proportional to $T^3$. With decreasing temperature below 1.2 K, the $T$-linear component decreases rapidly toward zero, which is insensitive to the magnetic field up to 9 T. This is suggestive of the singlet excitation decoupled from the magnetic field. The NMR spectrum for $x=0.2$ exhibits no long-range order down to 1.8 K. These results indicates that the ground state of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ is a valence-bond-glass state with singlet gaps.

Rb-NMR study of the quasi-one dimensional competing spin-chain compound Rb2Cu2Mo3O12

Rb-NMR study has been performed on the quasi-one dimensional competing spin chain Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions on nearest neighboring and next nearest neighboring spins, respectively. The system changes from a gapped ground state at zero field to the gapless state at H_C \simeq 2 T, where the existence of magnetic order below 1 K was demonstrated by a broadening of NMR spectrum, associated with a critical divergence of 1/T_1. In higher temperature region, 1/T_1 showed a power-law type temperature dependence, from which the field dependence of Luttinger parameter K was obtained and compared with theoretical calculations based on the spin nematic Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid (TLL) state.

Ground state of the spin-1/2 chain of green dioptase at high fields

The gem-stone dioptase Cu6Si6O18.6H2O has a chiral crystal structure of equilateral triangular helices consisting of Cu-3d spins. It shows an antiferromagnetic order with an easy axis along c at TN = 15.5 K under zero field, and a magnetization jump at HC = 13.5 T when the field is applied along c-axis. By 29Si-NMR measurements, we have revealed that the high-field state is essentially the two sub-lattice structure, and that the component within ab-plane is collinear. The result indicates no apparent match with the geometrical pattern of helical spin chain.
