On $f$-divergences between Cauchy distributions

We prove that the $f$-divergences between univariate Cauchy distributions are all symmetric, and can be expressed as strictly increasing scalar functions of the symmetric chi-squared divergence. We report the corresponding scalar functions for the total variation distance, the Kullback-Leibler divergence, the squared Hellinger divergence, and the Jensen-Shannon divergence among others. Next, we give conditions to expand the $f$-divergences as converging infinite series of higher-order power chi divergences, and illustrate the criterion for converging Taylor series expressing the $f$-divergences between Cauchy distributions. We then show that the symmetric property of $f$-divergences holds for multivariate location-scale families with prescribed matrix scales provided that the standard density is even which includes the cases of the multivariate normal and Cauchy families. However, the $f$-divergences between multivariate Cauchy densities with different scale matrices are shown asymmetric. Finally, we present several metrizations of $f$-divergences between univariate Cauchy distributions and further report geometric embedding properties of the Kullback-Leibler divergence.

Bahadur efficiency of the maximum likelihood estimator and one-step estimator for quasi-arithmetic means of the Cauchy distribution

Some quasi-arithmetic means of random variables easily give unbiased strongly consistent closed-form estimators of the joint of the location and scale parameters of the Cauchy distribution. The one-step estimators of those quasi-arithmetic means of the Cauchy distribution are considered. We establish the Bahadur efficiency of the maximum likelihood estimator and the one-step estimators. We also show that the rate of the convergence of the mean-squared errors achieves the Cramer-Rao bound. Our results are also applicable to the circular Cauchy distribution.

Characterizations of the maximum likelihood estimator of the Cauchy distribution

This paper gives a new approach for the maximum likelihood estimation of the joint of the location and scale of the Cauchy distribution. We regard the joint as a single complex parameter and derive a new form of the likelihood equation of a complex variable. Based on the equation, we provide a new iterative scheme approximating the maximum likelihood estimate. We also handle the equation in an algebraic manner and derive a polynomial containing the maximum likelihood estimate as a root. This algebraic approach provides another scheme approximating the maximum likelihood estimate by root-finding algorithms for polynomials, and furthermore, gives non-existence of closed-form formulae for the case that the sample size is five. We finally provide some numerical examples to show our method is effective.

Non-existence of measurable solutions of certain functional equations via probabilistic approaches

This paper deals with functional equations in the form of $f(x) + g(y) = h(x,y)$ where $h$ is given and $f$ and $g$ are unknown. We will show that if $h$ is a Borel measurable function associated with characterizations of the uniform or Cauchy distributions, then there is no measurable solutions of the equation. Our proof uses a characterization of the Dirac measure and it is also applicable to the arctan equation.

An equivalence criterion for infinite products of Cauchy measures

We give an equivalence-singularity criterion for infinite products of Cauchy measures under simultaneous shifts of the location and scale parameters. Our result is an extension of Lie and Sullivan's result giving an equivalence-singularity criterion under dilations of scale parameters. Our proof utilizes McCullagh's parameterization of the Cauchy distributions and maximal invariant, and a closed-form formula of the Kullback-Leibler divergence between two Cauchy measures given by Chyzak and Nielsen.

Some results for range of random walk on graph with spectral dimension two

We consider the range of the simple random walk on graphs with spectral dimension two. We give a form of strong law of large numbers under a certain uniform condition, which is satisfied by not only the square integer lattice but also a class of fractal graphs. Our results imply the strong law of large numbers on the square integer lattice established by Dvoretzky and Erdös (1951). Our proof does not depend on spacial homogeneity of space and gives a new proof of the strong law of large numbers on the lattice. We also show that the behavior of appropriately scaled expectations of the range is stable with respect to every "finite modification" of the two-dimensional integer lattice, and furthermore we construct a recurrent graph such that the uniform condition holds but the scaled expectations fluctuate. As an application, we establish a form of law of the iterated logarithms for lamplighter random walks in the case that the spectral dimension of the underlying graph is two.

Hausdorff dimensions for graph-directed measures driven by infinite rooted trees

We give upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimensions for a class of graph-directed measures when its underlying directed graph is the infinite N-ary tree. These measures are different from graph-directed self-similar measures driven by finite directed graphs and are not necessarily Gibbs measures. However our class contains several measures appearing in fractal geometry and functional equations, specifically, measures defined by restrictions of non-constant harmonic functions on the two-dimensional Sierpínski gasket, the Kusuoka energy measures on it, and, measures defined by solutions of de Rham's functional equations driven by linear fractional transformations.

Some results for conjugate equations

In this paper we consider a class of conjugate equations, which generalizes de Rham's functional equations. We give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of solutions under two different series of assumptions. We consider regularity of solutions. In our framework, two iterated function systems are associated with a series of conjugate equations. We state local regularity by using the invariant measures of the two iterated function systems with a common probability vector. We give several examples, especially an example such that infinitely many solutions exists, and a new class of fractal functions on the two-dimensional standard Sierpinski gasket which are not harmonic functions or fractal interpolation functions. We also consider a certain kind of stability.

Long time behavior of the volume of the Wiener sausage on Dirichlet spaces

In the present paper, we consider long time behaviors of the volume of the Wiener sausage on Dirichlet spaces. We focus on the volume of the Wiener sausage for diffusion processes on metric measure spaces other than the Euclid space equipped with the Lebesgue measure. We obtain the growth rate of the expectations and almost sure behaviors of the volumes of the Wiener sausages on metric measure Dirichlet spaces satisfying Ahlfors regularity and sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates. We show that the growth rate of the expectations on a "bounded" modification of the Euclidian space is identical with the one on the Euclidian space equipped with the Lebesgue measure. We give an example of a metric measure Dirichlet space on which a scaled of the means fluctuates.

Unions of random walk and percolation on infinite graphs

We consider a random object that is associated with both random walks and random media, specifically, the superposition of a configuration of subcritical Bernoulli percolation on an infinite connected graph and the trace of the simple random walk on the same graph. We investigate asymptotics for the number of vertices of the enlargement of the trace of the walk until a fixed time, when the time tends to infinity. This process is more highly self-interacting than the range of random walk, which yields difficulties. We show a law of large numbers on vertex-transitive transient graphs. We compare the process on a vertex-transitive graph with the process on a finitely modified graph of the original vertex-transitive graph and show their behaviors are similar. We show that the process fluctuates almost surely on a certain non-vertex-transitive graph. On the two-dimensional integer lattice, by investigating the size of the boundary of the trace, we give an estimate for variances of the process implying a law of large numbers. We give an example of a graph with unbounded degrees on which the process behaves in a singular manner. As by-products, some results for the range and the boundary, which will be of independent interest, are obtained.

Quenched large deviations for simple random walks on percolation models including long-range correlations

We prove a {\it{quenched}} large deviation principle (LDP) for a simple random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster (SRWPC) on $\mathbb Z^d$ ($d\geq 2$). The models under interest include classical Bernoulli bond and site percolation as well as models that exhibit long range correlations, like the random cluster model, the random interlacement and {the vacant set of random interlacements} (for $d\geq 3$) and the level sets of the Gaussian free field ($d\geq 3$). Inspired by the methods developed by Kosygina, Rezakhanlou and Varadhan ([KRV06]) for proving quenched LDP for elliptic diffusions with a random drift, and by Yilmaz ([Y08]) and Rosenbluth ([R06]) for similar results regarding elliptic random walks in random environment, we take the point of view of the moving particle and prove a large deviation principle for the quenched distribution of the {\it{pair empirical measures}} of the environment Markov chain in the non-elliptic case of SRWPC . Via a contraction principle, this reduces easily to a quenched LDP for the distribution of the mean velocity of the random walk and both rate functions admit explicit variational formulas. The main difficulty in our set up lies in the inherent non-ellipticity as well as the lack of {\it{translation-invariance}} stemming from conditioning on the fact that the origin belongs to the infinite cluster. We develop a unifying approach for proving quenched large deviations for SRWPC based on exploiting coercivity properties of the relative entropies in the context of convex variational analysis, combined with input from ergodic theory and invoking geometric properties of the supercritical percolation cluster.

Enlargement of subgraphs of infinite graphs by Bernoulli percolation

We consider changes in properties of a subgraph of an infinite graph resulting from the addition of open edges of Bernoulli percolation on the infinite graph to the subgraph. We give the triplet of an infinite graph, one of its subgraphs, and a property of the subgraphs. Then, in a manner similar to the way Hammersley's critical probability is defined, we can define two values associated with the triplet. We regard the two values as certain critical probabilities, and compare them with Hammersley's critical probability. In this paper, we focus on the following cases of a graph property: being a transient subgraph, having finitely many cut points or no cut points, being a recurrent subset, or being connected. Our results depend heavily on the choice of the triplet. Most results of this paper are announced in \cite{O16} without proofs. This paper gives full details of them.

On regularity for de Rham's functional equations

We consider regularity for solutions of a class of de Rham's functional equations. Under some smoothness conditions of functions consisting the equation, we improve some results in Hata (Japan J. Appl. Math. 1985). Our results are applicable to some cases that the functions consisting the equation are non-linear functions on an interval, specifically, polynomials and linear fractional transformations. Our results imply singularity of some well-known singular functions, in particular, Minkowski's question-mark function, and, some small perturbed functions of the singular functions.

A new generalization of the Takagi function

We consider a one-parameter family of functions $\{F(t,x)\}_{t}$ on $[0,1]$ and partial derivatives $\partial_{t}^{k} F(t, x)$ with respect to the parameter $t$. Each function of the class is defined by a certain pair of two square matrices of order two. The class includes the Lebesgue singular functions and other singular functions. Our approach to the Takagi function is similar to Hata and Yamaguti. The class of partial derivatives $\partial_{t}^{k} F(t, x)$ includes the original Takagi function and some generalizations. We consider real-analytic properties of $\partial_{t}^{k} F(t, x)$ as a function of $x$, specifically, differentiability, the Hausdorff dimension of the graph, the asymptotic around dyadic rationals, variation, a question of local monotonicity and a modulus of continuity. Our results are extensions of some results for the original Takagi function and some generalizations.

Aftershocks and Omori's law in a modified Carlson-Langer model with nonlinear visco-elasticity

A modified Carlson-Langer model for earthquakes is proposed, which includes nonlinear visco-elasticity. Several aftershocks are generated after the main shock owing to the damping of the additional visco-elastic force. Both the Gutenberg-Richter law and Omori's law are reproduced in a numerical simulation of the modified Carlson-Langer model on a critical percolation cluster of a square lattice.

On the range of self-interacting random walks on an integer interval

We consider the range of a one-parameter family of self-interacting walks on the integers up to the time of exit from an interval. We derive the weak convergence of an appropriately scaled range. We show that the distribution functions of the limits of the scaled range satisfy a certain class of de Rham's functional equations. We examine the regularity of the limits.

Large deviations for simple random walk on percolations with long-range correlations

We show quenched large deviations for the simple random walk on a certain class of percolations with long-range correlations. This class contains the supercritical Bernoulli percolations, the model considered by Drewitz, R'ath and Sapozhnikov and the random-cluster model up to the slab critical point. Our result is an extension of Kubota's result for the supercritical Bernoulli percolations. We also state a shape theorem for the chemical distance, which is an extension of Garet and Marchand's result for the supercritical Bernoulli percolations.
