Interpreting 750 GeV Diphoton Excess in Plain NMSSM

NMSSM has enough ingredients to explain the diphoton excess at 750 GeV: singlet-like (pseudo) scalar ($a$) $s$ and higgsinos as heavy vector-like fermions. We consider the production of the 750 GeV singlet-like pseudo scalar a from a decay of the doublet-like pseudo scalar $A$, and the subsequent decay of $a$ into two photons via higgsino loop. We demonstrate that this cascade decay of the NMSSM Higgs bosons can explain the diphoton excess in the 13 TeV data consistently with the absence of a significant excess in the 8 TeV data.

Di-photon Excess Explained by a Resonant Sneutrino in R-parity Violating Supersymmetry

We explain the recent excess seen by ATLAS and CMS experiments at around 750 GeV in the di-photon invariant mass as a narrow width sneutrino decaying to di-photons via a stau loop in R-parity violating Supersymmetry. The stau mass is predicted to be somewhere between half the resonant sneutrino mass and half the sneutrino mass plus 14 GeV. The scenario also predicts further signal channels at an invariant mass of 750 GeV, the most promising being into di-jets and $WW$. We also predict a left handed charged slepton decaying into $WZ$ and $W γ$ at a mass 750-754 GeV.

Mono-top Signature from Supersymmetric $t \bar t H$ Channel

We point out that a distinctive mono-top signature is present in Natural SUSY scenarios when a scalar top-quark and higgsinos are almost mass degenerate. This signature originates from a supersymmetric counter part of the $t \bar t H$ process, i.e. $pp \to \tilde t t \tilde h$. Unlike mono-jet signatures exploiting initial state radiation, this channel can be regarded as a smoking gun signature of a light stop and higgsinos, allowing a direct probe of the stop and neutralino sectors. The production rate of this channel largely depends on the up-type higgsino components in the neutralinos while the stop sector is sensitive to angular distributions of top-quark's decay products. We develop an optimal search strategy to capture the supersymmetric $t \bar t H$ process and find that a high luminosity LHC can probe the stop and higgsino sectors with $m_{\tilde t_1} \lesssim 380$ GeV and $m_{\tilde t_1} - m_{\tilde χ_1^0} \lesssim m_W$. Additionally, we propose a kinematic variable with which one can measure the stop mixing in this channel.

Search for Sphalerons: IceCube vs. LHC

We discuss the observability of neutrino-induced sphaleron transitions in the IceCube detector, encouraged by a recent paper by Tye and Wong (TW), which argued on the basis of a Bloch wave function in the periodic sphaleron potential that such transitions should be enhanced compared to most previous calculations. We calculate the dependence on neutrino energy of the sphaleron transition rate, comparing it to that for conventional neutrino interactions, and we discuss the observability of tau and multi-muon production in sphaleron-induced transitions. We use IceCube 4-year data to constrain the sphaleron rate, finding that it is comparable to the upper limit inferred previously from a recast of an ATLAS search for microscopic black holes at the LHC with $\sim 3$/fb of collisions at 13 TeV. The IceCube constraint is stronger for a sphaleron barrier height $E_{\rm Sph} \gtrsim 9$ TeV, and would be comparable with the prospective LHC sensitivity with 300/fb of data at 14 TeV if $E_{\rm Sph} \sim 11$ TeV.

The ATLAS Di-boson Excess Could Be an R-parity Violating Di-smuon Excess

We propose a new possible explanation of the ATLAS di-boson excess: that it is due to heavy resonant slepton production, followed by decay into di-smuons. The smuon has a mass not too far from the W and Z masses, and so it is easily confused with W or Z bosons after its subsequent decay into di-jets, through a supersymmetry violating and R-parity violating interaction. Such a scenario is not currently excluded by other constraints and remains to be definitively tested in Run II of the LHC. Such light smuons can easily simultaneously explain the discrepancy between the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the Standard Model prediction.

Search for Sphalerons in Proton-Proton Collisions

In a recent paper, Tye and Wong (TW) have argued that sphaleron-induced transitions in high-energy proton-proton collisions should be enhanced compared to previous calculations, based on a construction of a Bloch wave function in the periodic sphaleron potential and the corresponding pass band structure. Here we convolute the calculations of TW with parton distribution functions and simulations of final states to explore the signatures of sphaleron transitions at the LHC and possible future colliders. We calculate the increase of sphaleron transition rates in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 13/14/33/100 TeV for different sphaleron barrier heights, while recognising that the rates have large overall uncertainties. We use a simulation to show that LHC searches for microscopic black holes should have good efficiency for detecting sphaleron-induced final states, and discuss their experimental signatures and observability in Run 2 of the LHC and beyond. We recast the early ATLAS Run-2 search for microscopic black holes to constrain the rate of sphaleron transitions at 13 TeV, deriving a significant limit on the sphaleron transition rate for the nominal sphaleron barrier height of 9 TeV.

Long-lived bino and wino in supersymmetry with heavy scalars and higgsinos

We point out that there is a parameter region in supersymmetry with heavy scalars and higgsinos, in which the heavier of bino and wino becomes long-lived as a consequence of the heavy higgsinos. In this region these electroweak gaugino sectors are secluded from each other with very small mixings that are inversely proportional to the higgsino mass. We revisit the bino and bino decays and provide simple formulae for the partial decay rates and the lifetimes in the limit of heavy higgsinos. We discuss the collider signatures of the long-lived binos and winos in this scenario.

Detecting underabundant neutralinos

The electroweak sector may play a crucial role in discovering supersymmetry. We systematically investigate the patterns of the MSSM-like electroweakinos, when the neutralino relic abundance $Ω_χh^2\leq 0.12$, that is, also admitting for multi-component Dark Matter, in a broad range of the parameter space. We find that for a very large range of parameters the Direct Detection experiments are/will be sensitive to underabundant neutralinos, in spite of the strong rescaling of the flux factor. The second general conclusion is that the bound $Ω_χh^2\leq 0.12$ together with the LUX (XENON1T) limits for the neutralino spin independent scattering cross sections constrain the electroweakino spectrum so that the mass differences between the NLSP and the LSP are smaller than 40 (10) GeV, respectively, with important implications for the collider searches. The future Direct Detection experiments and the high luminosity LHC run will probe almost the entire range of the LSP and NLSP mass spectrum that is consistent with the bound $Ω_χh^2\leq 0.12$.

Z-peaked excess in goldstini scenarios

We study a possible explanation of a 3.0 $σ$ excess recently reported by the ATLAS Collaboration in events with Z-peaked same-flavour opposite-sign lepton pair, jets and large missing transverse momentum in the context of gauge-mediated SUSY breaking with more than one hidden sector, the so-called goldstini scenario. In a certain parameter space, the gluino two-body decay chain $\tilde g\to g\tildeχ^0_{1,2}\to gZ\tilde G'$ becomes dominant, where $\tildeχ^0_{1,2}$ and $\tilde G'$ are the Higgsino-like neutralino and the massive pseudo-goldstino, respectively, and gluino pair production can contribute to the signal. We find that a mass spectrum such as $m_{\tilde g}\sim 1000$ GeV, $m_{\tildeχ^0_{1,2}}\sim 800$ GeV and $m_{\tilde G'}\sim 600$ GeV demonstrates the rate and the distributions of the excess, without conflicting with the stringent constraints from jets plus missing energy analyses and with the CMS constraint on the identical final state.

A closer look at a hint of SUSY at the 8 TeV LHC

A recent CMS analysis has reported the observation of an excess in the invariant mass distribution of the opposite-sign same-flavour lepton pair, which can be interpreted as a kinematic edge due to new physics. Using collider simulation tools, we recast relevant LHC search results reported by ATLAS and CMS collaborations in order to determine constraints on supersymmetric models that could produce the observed features. In particular, we focus on models involving cascade decays of light-flavour squarks and sbottoms. We find no favourable supersymmetry scenario within our exploration that could explain the origin of the excess when other LHC constraints are taken into account.

`Stop' that ambulance! New physics at the LHC?

A number of LHC searches now display intriguing excesses. Most prominently, the measurement of the $W^+W^-$ cross-section has been consistently $\sim 20\%$ higher than the theoretical prediction across both ATLAS and CMS for both 7 and 8 TeV runs. More recently, supersymmetric searches for final states containing two or three leptons have also seen more events than predicted in certain signal regions. We show that a supersymmetric model containing a light stop, winos and binos can consistently match the data. We perform a fit to all measurements and searches that may be sensitive to our model and find a reduction in the log-likelihood of 15.4 compared to the Standard Model which corresponds to 3.5-$σ$ once the extra degrees of freedom in the fit are considered.

Prospects for observing charginos and neutralinos at a 100 TeV proton-proton collider

We investigate the prospects for discovering charginos and neutralinos at a future $pp$ collider with $\sqrt{s} = 100$ TeV. We focus on models where squarks and sleptons are decoupled -- as motivated by the LHC data. Our initial study is based on models where Higgsinos form the main component of the LSP and $W$-inos compose the heavier chargino states ($M_2 > μ$), though it is straightforward to consider the reverse situation also. We show that in such scenarios $W$-inos decay into $W^\pm$, $Z$ and $h$ plus neutralinos almost universally. In the $W Z$ channel we compare signal and background in various kinematical distributions. We design simple but effective signal regions for the trilepton channel and evaluate discovery reach and exclusion limits. Assuming 3000 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, $W$-inos could be discovered (excluded) up to 1.1 (1.8) TeV if the spectrum is not compressed.

Sharpening $m_{T2}$ cusps: the mass determination of semi-invisibly decaying particles from a resonance

We revisit mass determination techniques for the minimum symmetric event topology, namely $X$ pair production followed by $X \to \ell N$, where $X$ and $N$ are unknown particles with the masses to be measured, and $N$ is an invisible particle, concentrating on the case where $X$ is pair produced from a resonance. We consider separate scenarios, with different initial constraints on the invisible particle momenta, and present a systematic method to identify the kinematically allowed mass regions in the $(m_N, m_X)$ plane. These allowed regions exhibit a cusp structure at the true mass point, which is equivalent to the one observed in the $m_{T2}$ endpoints in certain cases. By considering the boundary of the allowed mass region we systematically define kinematical variables which can be used in measuring the unknown masses, and find a new expression for the $m_{T2}$ variable as well as its inverse. We explicitly apply our method to the case that $X$ is pair produced from a resonance, and as a case study, we consider the process $pp \to A \to \tilde χ_1^+ \tilde χ_1^-$, followed by $\tilde χ_1^\pm \to \ell^{\pm} \, \tilde ν_{\ell}$, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and show that our method provides a precise measurement of the chargino and sneutrino masses, $m_X$ and $m_N$, at $14 \, \mathrm{TeV}$ LHC with $300 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ luminosity.

Multi-hadron final states in RPV supersymmetric models with extra matters

The gluino mass has been constrained by various search channels at the LHC experiments and the recent analyses are even sensitive to the cases where gluinos decay to quarks at the end of the decay chains through the baryonic RPV operator. We argue that introduction of extra matters, which is partly motivated by cancelling anomalies of discrete R symmetry, may help to relax the gluino mass limit when the RPV hadronic gluino decays are considered. In the scenarios where the extra matter states appear in the gluino decay chains, the number of decay products increases and each jet becomes soft, making it difficult to distinguish the signal from backgrounds. We investigate the sensitivity of existing analyses to such scenarios and demonstrate that the gluino mass limit can be relaxed if the mass spectrum reconciles the sensitivities of high $p_T$ jet searches and large jet multiplicity searches.

Higgs boson to di-tau channel in Chargino-Neutralino searches at the LHC

We consider chargino-neutralino production, $\tildeχ_2^0 \tildeχ_1^\pm \to (h \tildeχ_1^0)(W^\pm \tildeχ_1^0)$, which results in Higgs boson final states that subsequently decay (inclusively) to leptons (either $h\rightarrow τ^+τ^-$ or $h\rightarrow W^+W^- \to (e^+e^-, μ^+μ^-, τ^+τ^-)+E_T^\mathrm{miss}$). Such channels are dominant in large regions of the allowed supersymmetric parameter space for many concrete supersymmetric models. The existence of leptons allows for good control over the backgrounds, rendering this channel competitive to the conventional $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ channel that has been previously used to impose constraints. We include hadronic decays of the $τ$ leptons in our analysis through a $τ$-identification algorithm. We consider integrated luminosities of 100 fb$^{-1}$, 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3000 fb$^{-1}$, for an LHC running at $pp$ centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV and provide the expected constraints on the $M_2$-$M_1$ plane.

Disentangling Higgs-Top Couplings in Associated Production

In the presence of CP violation, the Higgs-top coupling may have both scalar and pseudoscalar components, $κ_t$ and ${\tilde κ_t}$, which are bounded indirectly but only weakly by the present experimental constraints on the Higgs-gluon-gluon and Higgs-$γ$-$γ$ couplings, whereas upper limits on electric dipole moments provide strong additional indirect constraints on ${\tilde κ_t}$, if the Higgs-electron coupling is similar to that in the Standard Model and there are no cancellations with other contributions. We discuss methods to measure directly the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs-top couplings by measurements of Higgs production in association with ${\bar t} t$, single $t$ and single ${\bar t}$ at the LHC. Measurements of the total cross sections are very sensitive to variations in the Higgs-top couplings that are consistent with the present indirect constraints, as are invariant mass distributions in ${\bar t} t H$, $tH$ and ${\bar t} H$ final states. We also investigate the additional information on $κ_t$ and ${\tilde κ_t}$ that could be obtained from measurements of the longitudinal and transverse $t$ polarization in the different associated production channels, and the ${\bar t} t$ spin correlation in ${\bar t} t H$ events.

Fastlim: a fast LHC limit calculator

Fastlim is a tool to calculate conservative limits on extensions of the Standard Model from direct LHC searches without performing any Monte Carlo event generation. The program reconstructs the visible cross sections from pre-calculated efficiency tables and cross section tables for simplified event topologies. As a proof of concept of the approach, we have implemented searches relevant for supersymmetric models with R-parity conservation. Fastlim takes the spectrum and coupling information of a given model point and provides, for each signal region of the implemented analyses, the visible cross sections normalised to the corresponding upper limit, reported by the experiments, as well as the exclusion $p$-value. To demonstrate the utility of the program we study the sensitivity of the recent ATLAS missing energy searches to the parameter space of natural SUSY models. The program structure allows the straight-forward inclusion of external efficiency tables and can be generalised to R-parity violating scenarios and non-SUSY models. This paper serves as a self-contained user guide, and indicates the conventions and approximations used.

Light stops emerging in WW cross section measurements?

Recent ATLAS and CMS measurements show a slight excess in the WW cross section measurement. While still consistent with the Standard Model within 1-2 sigma, the excess could be also a first hint of physics beyond the Standard Model. We argue that this effect could be attributed to the production of scalar top quarks within supersymmetric models. The stops of mstop_1 ~ 200 GeV has the right pair-production cross section and under some assumptions can significantly contribute to the final state of two leptons and missing energy. We scan this region of parameter space to identify stop mass range preferred by the WW cross section measurements. Taking one sample benchmark point we show that it can be consistent with low energy observables and Higgs sector measurements and propose a method to distinguish supersymmetric signal from the Standard Model contribution.
