Correlation versus dissipation in a non-Hermitian Anderson impurity model

We analyze the competition between strong correlations and dissipation in quantum impurity systems from the Kondo regime to the valence fluctuation regime by developing a slave-boson theory for a non-Hermitian Anderson impurity model with one-body loss. Notably, in the non-Hermitian Kondo regime, strong correlations qualitatively change the nature of dissipation through renormalization effects, where the effective one-body loss is suppressed and emergent many-body dissipation characterized by the complex-valued hybridization is generated. We unveil the mechanism of a dissipative quantum phase transition of the Kondo state on the basis of this renormalization effect, which counterintuitively enhances the lifetime of the impurity against loss. We also find a crossover from the non-Hermitian Kondo regime to the valence fluctuation regime dominated by one-body dissipation. Our results can be tested in a wide variety of setups such as quantum dots coupled to electronic leads and quantum point contacts in ultracold Fermi gases.

Electromagnetic response in dipole superfluids: vortex lattices and singular domain walls

Among the most significant macroscopic quantum phenomena in condensed matter physics is the Meissner effect observed in superconductivity, which arises from the unique interaction between superfluids of charged particles and electromagnetic fields. However, superfluids can also emerge from particles possessing distinct electromagnetic properties. In particular, there has been growing interest in superfluids composed of charge-neutral particles with magnetic or electric dipole moments, such as Bose-Einstein condensates of magnons or excitons. Despite this interest, the electromagnetic response of dipole superfluids, including potential analogs or contrasts to the Meissner effect, remains poorly understood. In this work, we develop a Ginzburg-Landau phenomenological theory to describe magnetic and electric dipole superfluids subjected to pseudo-magnetic fields induced by geometric phases. For magnetic dipole superfluids interacting with the Aharonov-Casher (AC) phase, we find that they form vortex lattices with sharply localized pseudo-magnetic fields along hexagonal domain walls, leading to singular and discontinuous change of physical variables at these boundaries. For electric dipole superfluids influenced by the He-McKellar-Wilkens (HMW) phase, in contrast, we identify vortex lattices where the pseudo-magnetic field and supercurrent are concentrated at vortex cores, resembling superconductors. These results reveal strikingly different electromagnetic responses in dipole superfluids, opening new directions for exploring superfluid systems with unconventional electromagnetic responses.

Phase diagram of non-Hermitian BCS superfluids in a dissipative asymmetric Hubbard model

We investigate the non-Hermitian (NH) attractive Fermi-Hubbard model with asymmetric hopping and complex-valued interactions, which can be realized by collective one-body loss and two-body loss. By means of the NH BCS theory, we find that the weak asymmetry of the hopping does not affect the BCS superfluidity since it only affects the imaginary part of the eigenvalues of the BdG Hamiltonian. Systematic analysis in the d-dimensional hypercubic lattices clarifies that the singularity in the density of states affects the phase boundary between the normal and dissipation-induced superfluid states. Our results can be tested in ultracold atoms by using the photoassociation techniques and a nonlocal Rabi coupling with local losses and postselecting null measurement outcomes with the use of the quantum-gas microscope.

Interaction-induced Liouvillian skin effect in a fermionic chain with a two-body loss

Despite recent intensive research on topological aspects of open quantum systems, effects of strong interactions have not been sufficiently explored. In this paper, we demonstrate that complex-valued interactions induce the Liouvillian skin effect by analyzing a one-dimensional correlated model with two-body loss. We show that, in the presence of complex-valued interactions, eigenmodes and eigenvalues of the Liouvillian strongly depend on boundary conditions. Specifically, we find that complex-valued interactions induce localization of eigenmodes of the Liouvillian around the right edge under open boundary conditions. To characterize the Liouvllian skin effect, we define the topological invariant by using the Liouvillian superoperator. Then, we numerically confirm that the topological invariant captures the Liouvillian skin effect. Furthermore, the presence of the localization of eigenmodes results in the unique dynamics observed only under open boundary conditions: particle accumulation at the right edge in transient dynamics. Our result paves the way to realize topological phenomena in open quantum systems induced by strong interactions.

Theory of non-Hermitian fermionic superfluidity on a honeycomb lattice: Interplay between exceptional manifolds and van Hove Singularity

We study the non-Hermitian fermionic superfluidity subject to dissipation of Cooper pairs on a honeycomb lattice, for which we analyze the attractive Hubbard model with a complex-valued interaction. Remarkably, we demonstrate the emergence of the dissipation-induced superfluid phase that is anomalously enlarged by a cusp on the phase boundary. We find that this unconventional phase transition originates from the interplay between exceptional lines and van Hove singularity, which has no counterpart in equilibrium. Moreover, we demonstrate that the infinitesimal dissipation induces the nontrivial superfluid solution at the critical point. Our results can be tested in ultracold atoms with photoassociation techniques by postselcting special measurement outcomes with the use of quantum-gas microscopy and can lead to understanding the NH many-body physics triggered by exceptional manifolds in open quantum systems.

Localization properties in disordered quantum many-body dynamics under continuous measurement

We study localization properties of continuously monitored dynamics and associated measurement-induced phase transitions in disordered quantum many-body systems on the basis of the quantum trajectory approach. By calculating the fidelity between random quantum trajectories, we demonstrate that the disorder and the measurement can lead to dynamical properties distinct from each other, although both have a power to suppress the entanglement spreading. In particular, in the large-disorder regime with weak measurement, we elucidate that the fidelity exhibits an anomalous power-law decay before saturating to the steady-state value. Furthermore, we propose a general method to access physical quantities for quantum trajectories in continuously monitored dynamics without resorting to postselection. It is demonstrated that this scheme drastically reduces the cost of experiments. Our results can be tested in ultracold atoms subject to continuous measurement and open the avenue to study dynamical properties of localization, which cannot be understood from the stationary properties of the entanglement entropy.

Universal description of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry: Exact spectrum and critical exponents

Universal scaling relations for dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry are obtained for both fermions and bosons, by using asymptotic Bethe-ansatz solutions and conformal field theory (CFT) in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems with SU($N$) symmetry. We uncover that the spectrum of dissipative TL liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry is described by the sum of one charge mode characterized by a complex generalization of $c=1$ U(1) Gaussian CFT, and $N-1$ spin modes characterized by level-$1$ SU($N$) Kac-Moody algebra with the conformal anomaly $c=N-1$, and thereby dissipation only affects the charge mode as a result of spin-charge separation in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum systems. The derivation is based on a complex generalization of Haldane's ideal-gas description, which is implemented by the SU($N$) Calogero-Sutherland model with inverse-square long-range interactions.

Universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids: Case study of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain

We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the massless regime with weak dissipation belongs to the universality class characterized by the complex-valued TL parameter, which is related to the complex generalization of the $c=1$ conformal field theory. As the dissipation strength increases, the values of the TL parameter obtained by the NH-DMRG begin to deviate from those obtained by the Bethe-ansatz analysis, indicating that the model becomes massive for strong dissipation. Our results can be tested with the two-component Bose-Hubbard system of ultracold atoms subject to two-body loss.

Topological gap labeling with the third Chern numbers in three-dimensional quasicrystals

We study the topological gap labeling of general 3D quasicrystals and we find that every gap in the spectrum is characterized by a set of the third Chern numbers. We show that a quasi-periodic structure has multiple Brillouin zones defined by redundant wavevectors, and the number of states below a gap is quantized as an integer linear combination of volumes of these Brillouin zones. The associated quantum numbers to characterize energy gaps can be expressed as third Chern numbers by considering a formal relationship between an adiabatic charge pumping under cyclic deformation of the quasi-periodic potential and a topological nonlinear electromagnetic response in 6D insulators.

Collective Excitations and Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Dissipative Fermionic Superfluids

We predict a new mechanism to induce collective excitations and a nonequilibrium phase transition of fermionic superfluids via a sudden switch-on of two-body loss, for which we extend the BCS theory to fully incorporate a change in particle number. We find that a sudden switch-on of dissipation induces an amplitude oscillation of the superfluid order parameter accompanied by a chirped phase rotation as a consequence of particle loss. We demonstrate that when dissipation is introduced to one of the two superfluids coupled via a Josephson junction, it gives rise to a nonequilibrium dynamical phase transition characterized by the vanishing dc Josephson current. The dissipation-induced collective modes and nonequilibrium phase transition can be realized with ultracold fermionic atoms subject to inelastic collisions.

Rectification in Nonequilibrium Steady States of Open Many-Body Systems

We study how translationally invariant couplings of many-particle systems and nonequilibrium baths can be used to rectify particle currents, for which we consider minimal setups to realize bath-induced currents in nonequilibrium steady states of one-dimensional open fermionic systems. We first analyze dissipative dynamics associated with a nonreciprocal Lindblad operator and identify a class of Lindblad operators that are sufficient to acquire a unidirectional current. We show that unidirectional particle transport can in general occur when a Lindblad operator is reciprocal provided that the inversion symmetry and the time-reversal symmetry of the microscopic Hamiltonian are broken. We demonstrate this mechanism on the basis of both analytical and numerical approaches including the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the Zeeman magnetic field.

Video Motion Capture from the Part Confidence Maps of Multi-Camera Images by Spatiotemporal Filtering Using the Human Skeletal Model

This paper discusses video motion capture, namely, 3D reconstruction of human motion from multi-camera images. After the Part Confidence Maps are computed from each camera image, the proposed spatiotemporal filter is applied to deliver the human motion data with accuracy and smoothness for human motion analysis. The spatiotemporal filter uses the human skeleton and mixes temporal smoothing in two-time inverse kinematics computations. The experimental results show that the mean per joint position error was 26.1mm for regular motions and 38.8mm for inverted motions.

Theory of Non-Hermitian Fermionic Superfluidity with a Complex-Valued Interaction

Motivated by recent experimental advances in ultracold atoms, we analyze a non-Hermitian (NH) BCS Hamiltonian with a complex-valued interaction arising from inelastic scattering between fermions. We develop a mean-field theory to obtain a NH gap equation for order parameters, which are different from the standard BCS ones due to the inequivalence of left and right eigenstates in the NH physics. We find unconventional phase transitions unique to NH systems: superfluidity shows reentrant behavior with increasing dissipation, as a consequence of non-diagonalizable exceptional points, lines, and surfaces in the quasiparticle Hamiltonian for weak attractive interactions. For strong attractive interactions, the superfluid gap never collapses but is enhanced by dissipation due to an interplay between the BCS-BEC crossover and the quantum Zeno effect. Our results lay the groundwork for studies of fermionic superfluidity subject to inelastic collisions.
