Quasiperiodicity-induced non-Hermitian skin effect from the breakdown of scale-free localization

Non-reciprocal systems exhibit extreme sensitivity to boundary conditions, typically manifesting as the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) under open boundaries. By bridging the boundaries with a tunable impurity bond, one can access intermediate regimes where scale-free localization (SFL) can emerge. Here, we investigate the competition between such boundary coupling and quasiperiodic disorder in a one-dimensional non-reciprocal lattice. Our analyses reveal a quasiperiodicity-induced breakdown of the SFL regime, which evolves into either the NHSE or an extended regime, depending on boundary conditions. These results uncover the crucial roles of boundary effects and quasiperiodicity in non-Hermitian systems.

Quantum-geometric origin of superfluid weight in quasicrystals with critical states

A distinctive feature of many quasiperiodic systems is the presence of critical states that are neither extended nor exponentially localized. We investigate the geometric effect on the superfluid weight in quasiperiodic systems with critical states at zero temperature. We employ both real-space and momentum-space approaches to superfluid weight in quasicrystals, which allows us to separate the conventional and quantum geometric contributions. We find that the superfluid weight is dominated by the geometric contribution in quasiperiodic systems with critical states. This finding reveals a fundamental interplay between superconductivity and critical states in quasicrystals.

Non-Hermitian topological superconductivity with symmetry-enriched spectral and eigenstate features

We investigate a one-dimensional superconducting lattice that realizes all internal symmetries permitted in non-Hermitian systems, characterized by nonreciprocal hopping, onsite dissipation, and $s$-wave singlet pairing in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type structure. The combined presence of pseudo-Hermiticity and sublattice symmetry imposes constraints on the energy spectra. We identify parameter regimes featuring real spectra, purely imaginary spectra, complex flat bands, and Majorana zero modes, the latter emerging when a uniform transverse magnetic field suppresses the non-Hermitian skin effect. We show that a uniform onsite dissipation is essential for stabilizing the zero modes, whereas a purely staggered dissipation destroys the topological superconductivity. Through Hermitianization, we construct a spectral winding number as a topological invariant and demonstrate its correspondence with the gap closing conditions and appearance of the Majorana zero modes, allowing us to establish topological phase diagrams. Moreover, we reveal nontrivial correlations between the particle-hole and spin components of left and right eigenstates, enforced by chiral symmetry, pseudo-Hermiticity, and their combination. Our results highlight how non-Hermiticity, sublattice structure, and superconductivity together enrich symmetry properties and give rise to novel topological phenomena.

Quasi-two-dimensional spin helix and magnon-induced singularity in twisted bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene exhibits prominent correlated phenomena in two distinct regimes: a Kondo lattice near the magic angle, resembling heavy fermion systems, and a triangular correlated domain wall network under interlayer bias, akin to sliding Luttinger liquids previously introduced for cuprates. Combining these characteristics, here we investigate a system where interacting electrons in the domain wall network couple to localized spins. Owing to inter-domain-wall correlations, a quasi-two-dimensional spin helix phase within the localized spins emerges as a result of spatial phase coherence across parallel domain walls. Within the spin helix phase, magnons can induce a singularity, reflected in the scaling exponents of various correlation functions, accessible through electrical means and by adjusting the twist angle. We predict observable features in magnetic resonance and anisotropic paramagnetic spin susceptibility for the spin helix and the magnon-induced singularity, serving as experimental indicators of the interplay between the Kondo lattice and sliding Luttinger liquids. Integrating critical aspects of Luttinger liquid physics, magnetism, and Kondo physics in twisted bilayer graphene, our findings offer insights into similar correlated phenomena across a broad range of twisted van der Waals structures.

Gapless superconductivity and its real-space topology in quasicrystals

We study superconductivity in Ammann-Beenker quasicrystals under magnetic field. By assuming an intrinsic $s$-wave pairing interaction and solving for mean-field equations self-consistently, we find gapless superconductivity in the quasicrystals at and near half filling. We show that gapless superconductivity originates in broken translational symmetry and confined states unique to the quasicrystals. When Rashba spin-orbit coupling is present, the quasicrystalline gapless superconductor can be topologically nontrivial and characterized by a nonzero pseudospectrum invariant given by a spectral localizer. The gapless topological superconducting phase exhibits edge states with near-zero energy. These findings suggest that quasicrystals can be a unique platform for realizing gapless superconductivity with nontrivial topology.
