Renormalized Perturbation Approach for Examination of Itinerant-Localized Duality Model for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

We present a microscopic examination for the itinerant-localized duality model which has been proposed to understand anomalous properties of strongly correlated systems like the heavy fermions by Kuramoto and Miyake, and also useful to describe the anomalous properties of the high-Tc cupurates. We show that the thermodynamic potential of the strongly interacting Hubbard model can be rearranged in the form of duality model on the basis of renormalized perturbation expansion of the Luttinger-Ward functional if the one-particle spectral weight exhibits triple peak structure. We also examine the incoherent degrees of freedom described as a ``localized spin'' and show on the basis of the pertubation expansion that there exists commensurate superexchange-type interaction among the ``localized spins''.

Competition between Hund-Rule Coupling and Kondo Effect

We investigate a problem about the competition between the hybridization and the Hund-rule coupling by applying the Wilson numerical renormalization-group method to the extended Kondo model where the impurity spin interacts via the Hund-rule coupling, with an extra spin which is isolated from the conduction electrons. It is shown that the Hund-rule coupling is an irrelevant perturbation against the strong coupling fixed point. However, the Hund-rule coupling decreases the characteristic energy $T_K$ drastically to the lower side and the irrelevant operator, which describes the low energy physics, takes a form of ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the extra spin and the Kondo resonance states because of the existence of the Hund-rule coupling.

Impurity Effects in Strongly Correlated Metals: Large Pressure Dependence of Residual Resistivity of Heavy Fermions

It is shown on the basis of the Fermi liquid theory that the s-wave scattering potential due to nonmagnetic impurity is strongly enhanced by the mass enhancement factor $1/z$. As a result the impurity potential with moderate strength, of the order of the bandwidth of conduction electrons, gives scattering in the unitarity limit in strongly correlated metals as heavy fermions. This effect is embodied by large pressure dependence of residual resistivities in heavy fermion systems, since the pressure decreases the degree of correlations, which makes the Kondo temperature increase rapidly. This accounts for the large pressure dependence of the residual resistivity observed in heavy fermion metals, such as CeInCu$_{2}$, CeCu$_{6}$, CeAl$_{3}$.

A Theory of Anisotropic Semiconductor of Heavy Fermions

It is demonstrated that a {\veck}-dependence of the hybridization matrix element between $f$- and conduction electrons can give rise to an anisotropic hybridization gap of heavy fermions if the filling of electrons corresponds to that of the band insulator. The most interesting case occurs when the hybridization vanishes along some symmetry axis of the crystal reflecting a particular symmetry of the crystal field. The results of a model calculation are consistent with wide range of anomalous properties observed in CeNiSn and its isostructural compounds, the anisotropic semiconductor of heavy fermions. In particular, highly sensitive effect of impurity scattering on the residual density of states for zero energy excitation and the anisotropic temperature dependence of the resistivity are well explained. It is also discussed that a weak semimetallic behavior arises through the weak $\veck$-dependence of the $f$-electron self-energy $Σ_{f}(\veck,0)$.

Two-Channel Kondo Model as a Fixed Point of Local Electron-Phonon Coupling System

It is shown on the basis of the multiplicative renormalization-group method of two-loop order that the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of a strongly coupled local electron-phonon system is mapped to the two-channel Kondo model. A phonon is treated as an Einstein oscillator with restricted Hilbert space such that up to one-phonon process is taken into account. By eliminating the high energy process of conduction electrons, it is shown that a certain class of couplings between ion vibrations and conduction electrons is selectively grown up. As a result the system is reduced to the two-channel Kondo model. The crossover temperature $T_{\rm K}$ and the renormalized phonon frequency $Δ^{x}$ are expressed in terms of the mass ratio $m/M$, $m$ and $M$ being the mass of electron and ion, and the electron-phonon coupling $g/D$, $D$ being half the bandwidth of conduction electrons. The anomalous behaviors associated with this renormalization can be mesuarable if the condition $T_{\rm K}>Δ^{x}$ is fulfilled. It is demonstrated that such condition is satisfied when $g/D$ is sufficiently large but in a realistic range.

Aspect of Spin-Charge Separation due to Antiferromagentic Spin Fluctuations in Technically Nested 2D Metals

It is shown that the charge susceptibility in nearly half-filled two-dimensional (2D) metals, with technically nested Fermi surface, shows anomaly at the wavevector different from that for the spin susceptibility at low temperatures. Namely charge degrees of freedom behave there as if their ``Fermi surface" corresponded to that of ``holes" created in the Mott insulator. Such anomaly is caused by the Aslamazov-Larkin type contribution of 2D antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. This phenomenon gives a possible clue to resolve the paradox of normal state properties of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates {\it starting}\/ from the Fermi-liquid fixed point.

Comment on `Anomalously Large Gap Anisotropy in the a-b Plane of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$'

Comment on `Anomalously Large Gap Anisotropy in the a-b Plane of Bi$_{\bf 2}$Sr$_{\bf 2}$CaCu$_{\bf 2}$O$_{{\bf 8+}δ}$', Kazumasa Miyake and Osamu Narikiyo, In a recent Letter, Shen and collaborators [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 70}, 1555 (1993)] reported that angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) in Bi-2212 cuprate superconductor far below $T_{\rm c}$ has anomalously large anisotropy and then concluded that the symmetry of Cooper pair is likely to be $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$, i.e., $Δ_{\bf k}=Δ(\cos k_{x}a-\cos k_{y}a)$. In this Comment we point out that the interpretation done by Shen {\it et al\/.}, where the shift of edge near Fermi level has been identified with the gap $Δ_{\bf k}$, is not unambiguous, and that a possibility of $d_{xy}$ pairing, i.e., $Δ_{\bf k}=2Δ\sin k_{x}a\sin k_{y}a$, cannot be ruled out.
