Dimensional (In)dependence of Lorentzian Quantum Cosmology

We study transition amplitudes of the quantum universe in $D$-dimensional spacetime within the de Sitter minisuperspace approximation in Einstein gravity. Using the Lorentzian path integral combined with Picard-Lefschetz theory, we identify the saddle points that contribute to the integral and derive a well-defined transition amplitude under Dirichlet boundary conditions. We further show numerically that a resurgence analysis based on Borel-Padé resummation is effective in resolving the residual Stokes ambiguities that arise in certain cases. Analyzing three-, four-, and five-dimensional cases, as well as the large-$D$ limit, we find that the tunneling proposal is commonly realized for the creation of the universe from nothing. This result implies a universal feature of quantum cosmology based on Einstein gravity across dimensions.

Imprints of quantum vacuum fluctuations on the gravitational field of a spherical mass

The Schwarzschild geometry, describing the gravitational field of a spherical mass in classical vacuum, is one of the most famous vacuum solutions of the Einstein field equations. Classical vacuum is an idealization that does not include quantum vacuum fluctuations of quantum fields, and determining the form of the gravitational field of a spherical mass in quantum vacuum is an important step towards understanding the interplay between gravity and quantum field theory. We formulate and prove general results on the space of static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetimes sourced by quantum vacuum fluctuations, obtained under the broad assumptions that the quantum vacuum energy density is negative and unbounded on Killing horizons. In particular, we show the generic replacement of Killing horizons by wormhole throats. We discuss how previous calculations in the literature that have used different prescriptions for the regularized vacuum expectation value of the quantum stress-energy tensor are particular cases of our general results.

Macroscopic backreaction of the trace anomaly on classical vacuum backgrounds

We study the backreaction of quantum fields in the Boulware vacuum state on the Schwarzschild geometry, using the Riegert--Mottola--Vaulin renormalized stress-energy tensor derived from the conformal anomaly. An order-reduction procedure is applied to the first order, paying special attention to the conservation of the resulting stress-energy tensor. The results obtained in these different situations are compared between them, and also to recent works in the literature using other approximations for the renormalized stress-energy tensor.

Shadow formation in gravitational collapse: Redshift and blueshift by spacetime dynamics

A black hole illuminated by a background light source is observed as a black hole shadow. For a black hole formed by gravitational collapse of a transmissive object, redshift of light due to the spacetime dynamics is expected to play a crucial role in the shadow formation. In this paper, we investigate the redshift of light caused by the spacetime dynamics. First, we consider a spherical shell model. We see that the collapse of the shell typically leads to the redshift of light, while blueshift can be also observed in some cases. This result suggests that a shadow image is generally formed in the late stage of the gravitational collapse of a transmissive object. Second, we propose a covariant formula for the redshift of light in a general, dynamical, and spherically symmetric spacetime. This formula relates the redshift to the energy-momentum tensor of the background spacetime and provides its intuitive interpretation with a Newtonian analogy. The redshift effect analyzed in this work is regarded as the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect or the Rees-Sciama effect in gravitational collapse.

Boulware Vacuum vs. Regularity: Thoughts on Anomaly-Induced Effective Action

We examine the vacuum state and its corresponding renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) in static horizonless regular spacetime in both two and four dimensions. Using the local field formulation of the anomaly-induced effective action, we show that the regularities of the spacetime and the RSET dictate the appropriate vacuum state. Furthermore, through a case study under the horizonless Bardeen-type spacetime, we demonstrate that the preferred vacuum state is not the Boulware vacuum, but a nontrivial one with a different RSET profile.

Resurgence in Lorentzian quantum cosmology: No-boundary saddles and resummation of quantum gravity corrections around tunneling saddle points

We revisit the path-integral approach to the wave function of the Universe by utilizing Lefschetz thimble analyses and resurgence theory. The traditional Euclidean path-integral of gravity has the notorious ambiguity of the direction of Wick rotation. In contrast, the Lorentzian method can be formulated concretely with the Picard-Lefschetz theory. Yet, a challenge remains: the physical parameter space lies on a Stokes line, meaning that the Lefschetz-thimble structure is still unclear. Through complex deformations, we resolve this issue by uniquely identifying the thimble structure. This leads to the tunneling wave function, as opposed to the no-boundary wave function, offering a more rigorous proof of the previous results. Further exploring the parameter space, we discover rich structures: the ambiguity of the Borel resummation of perturbative series around the tunneling saddle points is exactly canceled by the ambiguity of the contributions from no-boundary saddle points. This indicates that resurgence also works in quantum cosmology, particularly in the minisuperspace model.

Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity and Lorentzian Quantum Cosmology

We directly evaluate the probability amplitudes in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity using the Lorentzian path integral formulation. By imposing boundary conditions on the scale factor and the dilaton field, the Lorentzian path integral uniquely yields the probability amplitude without contradiction. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions, we demonstrate that the amplitude derived from the Lorentzian path integral is expressed in terms of the modified Bessel function of the second kind. Furthermore, we provide the determinant for various boundary conditions and perform a detailed analysis of the Lefschetz thimble structure and saddle points. In contrast to four-dimensional gravity, we show that the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal is approximately valid in JT quantum cosmology. Furthermore, addressing quantum perturbation issues, we show that the quantum genesis of the two-dimensional universe occurs and exhibits perturbative regularity when the dilaton field is non-zero and large as an initial condition.

Greybody Factors Imprinted on Black Hole Ringdowns. II. Merging Binary Black Holes

The spectral amplitude of the merger-ringdown gravitational wave (GW) emitted by a comparable mass-ratio black hole merger is modeled by the greybody factor of the remnant black hole. We also include the post-Newtonian correction to the greybody factor model. Our model includes only a few fitting parameters, which could evade the overfitting issue. We perform the mass-spin inference from the SXS data without tuning the data range of each SXS waveform. Also, we find that the exponential damping in the ringdown spectral amplitude can be modeled well with the exponential damping in the greybody factor at high frequencies. Our findings could be consistent with a conjecture that the light ring of the remnant black hole, which sources the ringdown, forms as early as during the merger stage. We discuss the formation of the light ring in the static binary solution as a first step towards the understanding of how the separation of merging black holes may affect the formation of the light ring.

Radiative gravastar with thermal spectrum; Sudden vacuum condensation without gravitational collapse

The gravastar is an exotic compact object proposed as a final product of gravitational collapse of a massive object in order to resolve problems associated with black holes. It is enclosed by a thin crust and the inside of it is occupied by the positive cosmological constant. Recently, the present authors studied quantum particle creation through spherically symmetric gravitational collapse to form a gravastar, and showed that the newly formed gravastar emits thermal radiation with the Gibbons-Hawking temperature of its de Sitter core. In this paper, in order to understand more about the thermal radiation associated with the gravastar formation, we investigate the quantum particle creation in another toy model of the gravastar formation; a star with the hollow inside suddenly becomes a gravastar through gravitational vacuum condensation. We find that the thermal radiation is emitted from the gravastar just formed also in the present model. The thermal radiation from the gravastar just formed comes from the change of the geometry inside the star accompanied by gravitational vacuum condensate.

Radiative gravastar with Gibbons-Hawking temperature

We study the quantum particle creation in a toy model of spherically symmetric gravitational collapse whose final product is not a black hole but a gravastar. Precedent studies revealed that even in the case of the gravitational collapse to form a horizonless ultra-compact object, thermal radiation named transient Hawking radiation is generated at the late stage of the gravitational collapse, and a sudden stop of collapsing motion to form a horizonless ultra-compact object causes one or two bursts of quantum particle creation. The very different behavior of the model studied in this paper from the precedent ones is quantum radiation with a thermal spectrum from the gravastar between two bursts. The temperature of the radiation is not the same as the Hawking one determined by the gravitational mass of the system but the Gibbons-Hawking one of the de Sitter core inside the gravastar.

Dynamical photon sphere and time evolving shadow around black holes with temporal accretion

A photon sphere is known as the geometrical structure shaping a black hole shadow. The mechanism is well understood for static or stationary black hole spacetimes such as the Schwarzschild and the Kerr spacetimes. In this paper, we investigate and explicitly specify a photon sphere that shapes a black hole shadow in a dynamical spacetime while taking the global structure of the spacetime into account. We consider dynamical and eternal black hole cases of the Vaidya spacetime, which represents a spherically symmetric black hole with accreting null dust. First, we numerically show that there are the dynamical photon sphere and photon orbits corresponding to the shadow edge in a moderate accretion case. Second, the photon spheres are derived analytically in special cases. Finally, we discuss the relation between our photon sphere and the several notions defined as a photon sphere generalization.

Robustness of particle creation in the formation of a compact object

Hawking has predicted that the formation of a black hole by gravitational collapse causes quantum particle creation and the spectrum of the particles is almost thermal. This phenomenon is called the Hawking radiation. Recently, it has been predicted that the particle creation may drastically change from the Hawking radiation to a strong double burst if the gravitational collapse suddenly stops just before the formation of the event horizon. By contrast with the Hawking radiation, the burst may be so strong that it can be of observational interest even for collapsing objects with astrophysical mass scales. However, the burst phenomenon has been predicted through the studies of idealized models in which a spherical hollow shell begins to collapse, but stops shrinking and eventually settles down to a static "star". Therefore, one might guess that it could be particular to the hollow shell model. In this paper, we study the particle creation due to the gravitational collapse of a spherical object whose interior is filled with matter. In this model, we obtain similar results to those in the case of the hollow shell model. This implies that the double burst is a robust property of particle creation by the sudden braking of gravitational collapse.

Do black hole shadows merge?

The so-called black hole shadow is not a silhouette of a black hole but an image of a collapsing object or a white hole. Hence it is non-trivial whether black hole shadows merge with each other when black holes coalesce with each other. In this paper, by analyzing the null geodesic generators of the event horizon in Kastor-Traschen spacetime which describes a coalescence of black boles, we see that observers who will never see a merger of black hole shadows exist.

Maximal Efficiency of Collisional Penrose Process with Spinning Particle II

We analyze the collisional Penrose process between a particle on the ISCO orbit around an extreme Kerr black hole and a particle impinging from infinity. We consider both cases with non-spinning and spinning particles. We evaluate the maximal efficiency, $η_{\text{max}}=(\text{extracted energy})/(\text{input energy})$, for the elastic collision of two massive particles and for the photoemission process, in which the ISCO particle will escape to infinity after the collision with a massless impinging particle. For non-spinning particles, the maximum efficiency is $η_{\text{max}} \approx 2.562$ for the elastic collision and $η_{\text{max}} \approx 7$ for the photoemission process. While for spinning particles we obtain the maximal efficiency $η_{\text{max}} \approx 8.442$ for the elastic collision and $η_{\text{max}} \approx 12.54$ for the photoemission process.

Maximal Efficiency of Collisional Penrose Process with Spinning Particles

We analyze collisional Penrose process of spinning test particles in an extreme Kerr black hole. We consider that two particles plunge into the black hole from infinity and collide near the black hole. For the collision of two massive particles, if the spins of particles are $s_1 \approx 0.01379μM$ and $s_2 \approx -0.2709μM$, we obtain the maximal efficiency is about $η_{max} = (\text{extracted energy})=(\text{input energy}) \approx 15.01$, which is more than twice as large as the case of the collision of non-spinning particles ($η_{max} \approx 6.32$). We also evaluate the collision of a massless particle without spin and a massive particle with spin (Compton scattering), in which we find the maximal efficiency is $η_{max} \approx 26.85$ when $s_2 \approx -0.2709μM$, which should be compared with $η_{max} \approx 13.93$ for the nonspinning case.
