A Projection Method for an Elasto-plasticity Model with Linear Kinematic Hardening

We consider a dynamical elasto-plasticity system with Kelvin--Voigt viscosity and linear kinematic hardening of Melan--Prager type. The model is formulated in a variational framework in which a constraint set for the stress evolves in time and is translated by an internal (backstress) variable. As a consequence, the flow rule is coupled with an equation of motion through a quasi-variational structure, since the constraint set depends on the unknown internal variable. To construct solutions, we employ Rothe's method and introduce a projection-based time discretization. Each time step consists of solving a linear viscous-elastic subproblem to obtain a trial stress, followed by a projection onto the translated constraint set. We establish stability of the resulting discrete solutions under suitable norms. By compactness and passage to the limit as the time step tends to zero, we prove existence of a weak solution in the variational sense, and uniqueness follows from an energy argument. The results cover time-dependent yield bounds without assuming spatial continuity or a strictly positive lower bound, and the discretization provides a constructive basis for numerical approximation.

Threshold dynamics in time-delay systems: polynomial $β$-control in a pressing process and connections to blow-up

This paper addresses a press control problem in straightening machines with small time delays due to system communication. To handle this, we propose a generalized $β$-control method, which replaces conventional linear velocity control with a polynomial of degree $β\ge 1$. The resulting model is a delay differential equation (DDE), for which we derive basic properties through nondimensionalization and analysis. Numerical experiments suggest the existence of a threshold initial velocity separating overshoot and non-overshoot dynamics, which we formulate as a conjecture. Based on this, we design a control algorithm under velocity constraints and confirm its effectiveness. We also highlight a connection between threshold behavior and finite-time blow-up in DDEs. This study provides a practical control strategy and contributes new insights into threshold dynamics and blow-up phenomena in delay systems.

Universal approximation property of ODENet and ResNet with a single activation function

We study a universal approximation property of ODENet and ResNet. The ODENet is a map from an initial value to the final value of an ODE system in a finite interval. It is considered a mathematical model of a ResNet-type deep learning system. We consider dynamical systems with vector fields given by a single composition of the activation function and an affine mapping, which is the most common choice of the ODENet or ResNet vector field in actual machine learning systems. We show that such an ODENet and ResNet with a restricted vector field can uniformly approximate ODENet with a general vector field.

Projection scheme for a perfect plasticity model with a time-dependent constraint set

This paper introduces a new numerical scheme for a system that includes evolution equations describing a perfect plasticity model with a time-dependent yield surface. We demonstrate that the solution to the proposed scheme is stable under suitable norms. Moreover, the stability leads to the existence of an exact solution, and we also prove that the solution to the proposed scheme converges strongly to the exact solution under suitable norms.

Universal Approximation Properties for an ODENet and a ResNet: Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Experiments

We prove a universal approximation property (UAP) for a class of ODENet and a class of ResNet, which are simplified mathematical models for deep learning systems with skip connections. The UAP can be stated as follows. Let $n$ and $m$ be the dimension of input and output data, and assume $m\leq n$. Then we show that ODENet of width $n+m$ with any non-polynomial continuous activation function can approximate any continuous function on a compact subset on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that ResNet has the same property as the depth tends to infinity. Furthermore, we derive the gradient of a loss function explicitly with respect to a certain tuning variable. We use this to construct a learning algorithm for ODENet. To demonstrate the usefulness of this algorithm, we apply it to a regression problem, a binary classification, and a multinomial classification in MNIST.

A projection method for Navier-Stokes equations with a boundary condition including the total pressure

We consider a projection method for time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a total pressure boundary condition. The projection method is one of the numerical calculation methods for incompressible viscous fluids often used in engineering. In general, the projection method needs additional boundary conditions to solve a pressure-Poisson equation, which does not appear in the original Navier-Stokes problem. On the other hand, many mechanisms generate flow by creating a pressure difference, such as water distribution systems and blood circulation. We propose a new additional boundary condition for the projection method with a Dirichlet-type pressure boundary condition and no tangent flow. We demonstrate stability for the scheme and establish error estimates for the velocity and pressure under suitable norms. A numerical experiment verifies the theoretical convergence results. Furthermore, the existence of a weak solution to the original Navier-Stokes problem is proved by using the stability.

Boundary conditions for the Stokes problem and a pressure-Poisson problem

We consider a boundary value problem for the stationary Stokes problem and the corresponding pressure-Poisson equation. We propose a new formulation for the pressure-Poisson problem with an appropriate additional boundary condition. We establish error estimates between solutions to the Stokes problem and the pressure-Poisson problem in terms of the additional boundary condition. As boundary conditions for the Stokes problem, we use a traction boundary condition and a pressure boundary condition introduced in C. Conca et al (1994).

Analysis of a projection method for the Stokes problem using an $\varepsilon$-Stokes approach

We generalize pressure boundary conditions of an $\varepsilon$-Stokes problem. Our $\varepsilon$-Stokes problem connects the classical Stokes problem and the corresponding pressure-Poisson equation using one parameter $\varepsilon>0$. For the Dirichlet boundary condition, it is proven in K. Matsui and A. Muntean (2018) that the solution for the $\varepsilon$-Stokes problem converges to the one for the Stokes problem as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0, and to the one for the pressure-Poisson problem as $\varepsilon$ tends to $\infty$. Here, we extend these results to the Neumann and mixed boundary conditions. We also establish error estimates in suitable norms between the solutions to the $\varepsilon$-Stokes problem, the pressure-Poisson problem and the Stokes problem, respectively. Several numerical examples are provided to show that several such error estimates are optimal in $\varepsilon$. Our error estimates are improved if one uses the Neumann boundary conditions. In addition, we show that the solution to the $\varepsilon$-Stokes problem has a nice asymptotic structure.
