The CP symmetry is not manifestly implemented for the local and doubler-free Ginsparg-Wilson operator in lattice chiral gauge theory. We precisely identify where the effects of this CP breaking appear.

A Perturbative Study of a General Class of Lattice Dirac Operators

A perturbative study of a general class of lattice Dirac operators is reported, which is based on an algebraic realization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation in the form $γ_{5}(γ_{5}D)+(γ_{5}D)γ_{5} = 2a^{2k+1}(γ_{5}D)^{2k+2}$ where $k$ stands for a non-negative integer. The choice $k=0$ corresponds to the commonly discussed Ginsparg-Wilson relation and thus to the overlap operator. We study one-loop fermion contributions to the self-energy of the gauge field, which are related to the fermion contributions to the one-loop $β$ function and to the Weyl anomaly. We first explicitly demonstrate that the Ward identity is satisfied by the self-energy tensor. By performing careful analyses, we then obtain the correct self-energy tensor free of infra-red divergences, as a general consideration of the Weyl anomaly indicates. This demonstrates that our general operators give correct chiral and Weyl anomalies. In general, however, the Wilsonian effective action, which is supposed to be free of infra-red complications, is expected to be essential in the analyses of our general class of Dirac operators for dynamical gauge field.

Supersymmetry on the lattice and the Leibniz rule

The major obstacle to a supersymmetric theory on the lattice is the failure of the Leibniz rule. We analyze this issue by using the Wess-Zumino model and a general Ginsparg-Wilson operator, which is local and free of species doublers. We point out that the Leibniz rule could be maintained on the lattice if the generic momentum $k_μ$ carried by any field variable satisfies $|ak_μ|<δ$ in the limit $a\to 0$ for arbitrarily small but finite $δ$. This condition is expected to be satisfied generally if the theory is finite perturbatively, provided that discretization does not induce further symmetry breaking. We thus first render the continuum Wess-Zumino model finite by applying the higher derivative regularization which preserves supersymmetry. We then put this theory on the lattice, which preserves supersymmetry except for a breaking in interaction terms by the failure of the Leibniz rule. By this way, we define a lattice Wess-Zumino model which maintains the basic properties such as $U(1)\times U(1)_{R}$ symmetry and holomorphicity. We show that this model reproduces continuum theory in the limit $a\to 0$ up to any finite order in perturbation theory; in this sense all the supersymmetry breaking terms induced by the failure of the Leibniz rule are irrelevant. We then suggest that this discretization may work to define a low energy effective theory in a non-perturbative way.

Path Integral for Separable Hamiltonians of Liouville-type

A general path integral analysis of the separable Hamiltonian of Liouville-type is reviewed. The basic dynamical principle used is the Jacobi's principle of least action for given energy which is reparametrization invariant, and thus the gauge freedom naturally appears. The choice of gauge in path integral corresponds to the separation of variables in operator formalism. The gauge independence and the operator ordering are closely related. The path integral in this formulation sums over orbits in space instead of space-time. An exact path integral of the Green's function for the hydrogen atom in parabolic coordinates is ilustrated as an example, which is also interpreted as one-dimensional quantum gravity with a quantized cosmological constant.

Generalized Ginsparg-Wilson algebra and index theorem on the lattice

Recent studies of the topological properties of a general class of lattice Dirac operators are reported. This is based on a specific algebraic realization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation in the form $γ_{5}(γ_{5}D)+(γ_{5}D)γ_{5} = 2a^{2k+1}(γ_{5}D)^{2k+2}$ where $k$ stands for a non-negative integer. The choice $k=0$ corresponds to the commonly discussed Ginsparg-Wilson relation and thus to the overlap operator. It is shown that local chiral anomaly and the instanton-related index of all these operators are identical. The locality of all these Dirac operators for vanishing gauge fields is proved on the basis of explicit construction, but the locality with dynamical gauge fields has not been established yet. We suggest that the Wilsonian effective action is essential to avoid infrared singularities encountered in general perturbative analyses.

Ginsparg-Wilson operators and a no-go theorem

If one uses a general class of Ginsparg-Wilson operators, it is known that CP symmetry is spoiled in chiral gauge theory for a finite lattice spacing and the Majorana fermion is not defined in the presence of chiral symmetric Yukawa couplings. We summarize these properties in the form of a theorem for the general Ginsparg-Wilson relation.

CP breaking in lattice chiral gauge theories

The CP symmetry is not manifestly implemented for the local and doubler-free Ginsparg-Wilson operator in lattice chiral gauge theory. We precisely identify where the effects of this CP breaking appear. We show that they appear in: (I) Overall constant phase of the fermion generating functional. (II) Overall constant coefficient of the fermion generating functional. (III) Fermion propagator appearing in external fermion lines and the propagator connected to Yukawa vertices. The first effect appears from the transformation of the path integral measure and it is absorbed into a suitable definition of the constant phase factor for each topological sector; in this sense there appears no ``CP anomaly''. The second constant arises from the explicit breaking in the action and it is absorbed by the suitable weights with which topological sectors are summed. The last one in the propagator is inherent to this formulation and cannot be avoided by a mere modification of the projection operator, for example, in the framework of the Ginsparg-Wilson operator. This breaking emerges as an (almost) contact term in the propagator when the Higgs field, which is treated perturbatively, has no vacuum expectation value. In the presence of the vacuum expectation value, however, a completely new situation arises and the breaking becomes intrinsically non-local, though this breaking may still be removed in a suitable continuum limit. This non-local CP breaking is expected to persist for a non-perturbative treatment of the Higgs coupling.

Remarks on Shannon's Statistical Inference and the Second Law in Quantum Statistical Mechanics

We comment on a formulation of quantum statistical mechanics, which incorporates the statistical inference of Shannon. Our basic idea is to distinguish the dynamical entropy of von Neumann, $H = -k Tr \hatρ\ln\hatρ$, in terms of the density matrix $\hatρ(t)$, and the statistical amount of uncertainty of Shannon, $S= -k \sum_{n}p_{n}\ln p_{n}$, with $p_{n}=< n|\hatρ|n>$ in the representation where the total energy and particle numbers are diagonal. These quantities satisfy the inequality $S\geq H$. We propose to interprete Shannon's statistical inference as specifying the {\em initial conditions} of the system in terms of $p_{n}$. A definition of macroscopic observables which are characterized by intrinsic time scales is given, and a quantum mechanical condition on the system, which ensures equilibrium, is discussed on the basis of time averaging. An interesting analogy of the change of entroy with the running coupling in renormalization group is noted. A salient feature of our approach is that the distinction between statistical aspects and dynamical aspects of quantum statistical mechanics is very transparent.

Lattice chiral symmetry, Yukawa couplings and the Majorana condition

It is shown that the conflict between lattice chiral symmetry and the Majorana condition in the presence of Yukawa couplings, which was noted in our previous paper, is related in an essential way to the basic properties of Ginsparg-Wilson operators, namely, locality and species doubling.

Properties of a New Class of Lattice Dirac Operators

A new class of lattice Dirac operators $D$ have been recently proposed on the basis of the generalized Ginsparg-Wilson relation, $γ_5(γ_5 D) + (γ_5 D)γ_5 =2a^{2k+1}(γ_5 D)^{2k+2}$, where $k$ is a non-negative integer. We discuss the index theorem and locality properties for this general class of lattice Dirac operators.

Lattice Chiral Symmetry and the Wess-Zumino Model

A lattice regularization of the supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model is studied by using Ginsparg-Wilson operators. We recognize a certain conflict between the lattice chiral symmetry and the Majorana condition for Yukawa couplings, or in Weyl representation a conflict between the lattice chiral symmetry and Yukawa couplings. This conflict is also related, though not directly, to the fact that the kinetic (Kähler) term and the superpotential term are clearly distinguished in the continuum Wess-Zumino model, whereas these two terms are mixed in the Ginsparg-Wilson operators. We illustrate a case where lattice chiral symmetry together with naive Bose-Fermi symmetry is imposed by preserving a SUSY-like symmetry in the free part of the Lagrangian; one-loop level non-renormalization of the superpotential is then maintained for finite lattice spacing, though the finite parts of wave function renormalization deviate from the supersymmetric value. All these properties hold for the general Ginsparg-Wilson algebra independently of the detailed construction of lattice Dirac operators.

Spin-Statistics Theorem in Path Integral Formulation

We present a coherent proof of the spin-statistics theorem in path integral formulation. The local path integral measure and Lorentz invariant local Lagrangian, when combined with Green's functions defined in terms of time ordered products, ensure causality regardless of statistics. The Feynman's $m-iε$ prescription ensures the positive energy condition regardless of statistics, and the abnormal spin-statistics relation for both of spin-0 scalar particles and spin-1/2 Dirac particles is excluded if one imposes the positive norm condition in conjunction with Schwinger's action principle. The minus commutation relation between one Bose and one Fermi field arises naturally in path integral. The Feynman's $m-iε$ prescription also ensures a smooth continuation to Euclidean theory, for which the use of the Weyl anomaly is illustrated to exclude the abnormal statistics for the scalar and Dirac particles not only in 4-dimensional theory but also in 2-dimensional theory.

Locality Properties of a New Class of Lattice Dirac Operators

A new class of lattice Dirac operators $D$ which satisfy the index theorem have been recently proposed on the basis of the algebraic relation $γ_{5}(γ_{5}D) + (γ_{5}D)γ_{5} = 2a^{2k+1}(γ_{5}D)^{2k+2}$. Here $k$ stands for a non-negative integer and $k=0$ corresponds to the ordinary Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We analyze the locality properties of Dirac operators which solve the above algebraic relation. We first show that the free fermion operator is analytic in the entire Brillouin zone for a suitable choice of parameters $m_{0}$ and $r$, and there exists a well-defined ``mass gap'' in momentum space, which in turn leads to the exponential decay of the operator in coordinate space for any finite $k$. This mass gap in the free fermion operator suggests that the operator is local for sufficiently weak background gauge fields. We in fact establish a finite locality domain of gauge field strength for $Γ_{5}=γ_{5}-(aγ_{5}D)^{2k+1}$ for any finite $k$, which is sufficient for the cohomological analyses of chiral gauge theory. We also present a crude estimate of the localization length defined by an exponential decay of the Dirac operator, which turns out to be much shorter than the one given by the general Legendre expansion.

Quantum and Classical Gauge Symmetries in a Modified Quantization Scheme

The use of the mass term as a gauge fixing term has been studied by Zwanziger, Parrinello and Jona-Lasinio, which is related to the non-linear gauge $A_μ^{2}=λ$ of Dirac and Nambu in the large mass limit. We have recently shown that this modified quantization scheme is in fact identical to the conventional {\em local} Faddeev-Popov formula {\em without} taking the large mass limit, if one takes into account the variation of the gauge field along the entire gauge orbit and if the Gribov complications can be ignored. This suggests that the classical massive vector theory, for example, is interpreted in a more flexible manner either as a gauge invariant theory with a gauge fixing term added, or as a conventional massive non-gauge theory. As for massive gauge particles, the Higgs mechanics, where the mass term is gauge invariant, has a more intrinsic meaning. It is suggested to extend the notion of quantum gauge symmetry (BRST symmetry) not only to classical gauge theory but also to a wider class of theories whose gauge symmetry is broken by some extra terms in the classical action. We comment on the implications of this extended notion of quantum gauge symmetry.

Aspects of Anomalies in Field Theory

We discuss some formal aspects of quantum anomalies with an emphasis on the regularization of field theory. We briefly review how ambiguities in perturbation theory have been resolved by various regularization schemes. To single out the true quantum anomaly among ambiguities, the combined ideas of PCAC, soft pion limit and renormalizability were essential. As for the formal treatment of quantum anomalies, we mainly discuss the path integral formulation both in continuum and lattice theories. In particular, we discuss in some detail the recent development in the treatment of chiral anomalies in lattice gauge theory.

Chiral Anomaly for a New Class of Lattice Dirac Operators

A new class of lattice Dirac operators which satisfy the index theorem have been recently proposed on the basis of the algebraic relation $γ_{5}(γ_{5}D) + (γ_{5}D)γ_{5} = 2a^{2k+1}(γ_{5}D)^{2k+2}$. Here $k$ stands for a non-negative integer and $k=0$ corresponds to the ordinary Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We analyze the chiral anomaly and index theorem for all these Dirac operators in an explicit elementary manner. We show that the coefficient of anomaly is independent of a small variation in the parameters $r$ and $m_{0}$, which characterize these Dirac operators, and the correct chiral anomaly is obtained in the (naive) continuum limit $a\to 0$.

Algebraic Generalization of the Ginsparg-Wilson Relation

A specific algebraic realization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation in the form $γ_{5}(γ_{5}D)+(γ_{5}D)γ_{5} = 2a^{2k+1}(γ_{5}D)^{2k+2}$ is discussed, where $k$ stands for a non-negative integer and $k=0$ corresponds to the commonly discussed Ginsparg-Wilson relation. From a view point of algebra, a characteristic property of our proposal is that we have a closed algebraic relation for one unknown operator $D$, although this relation itself is obtained from the original proposal of Ginsparg and Wilson, $γ_{5}D+Dγ_{5}=2aDγ_{5} αD$, by choosing $α$ as an operator containing $D$ (and thus Dirac matrices). In this paper, it is shown that we can construct the operator $D$ explicitly for any value of $k$. We first show that the instanton-related index of all these operators is identical. We then illustrate in detail a generalization of Neuberger's overlap Dirac operator to the case $k=1$. On the basis of explicit construction, it is shown that the chiral symmetry breaking term becomes more irrelevent for larger $k$ in the sense of Wilsonian renormalization group. We thus have an infinite tower of new lattice Dirac operators which are topologically proper, but a large enough lattice is required to accomodate a Dirac operator with a large value of $k$.

Regularization and Anomalies in Gauge Theory

Some of the basic issues related to the regularization and anomalies in gauge theory are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the recent development in lattice gauge theory. The generalized Pauli-Villars regularization is discussed from a view point of the covariant regularization of currents, and the construction of a regularized effective action in terms of covariant currents is compared with the lattice formulation of chiral Abelian theory.
