From mapping class groups to monoids of homology cobordisms: a survey

Let S be a compact oriented surface. A homology cobordism of S is a cobordism C between two copies of S, such that both the "top" inclusion and the "bottom" inclusion of S in C induce isomorphisms in homology. Homology cobordisms of S form a monoid, into which the mapping class group of S embeds by the mapping cylinder construction. In this paper, we survey recent works on the structure of the monoid of homology cobordisms, and we outline their relations with the study of the mapping class group. We are mainly interested in the cases where the boundary of S is empty or connected.

Symplectic Jacobi diagrams and the Lie algebra of homology cylinders

Let S be a compact connected oriented surface, whose boundary is connected or empty. A homology cylinder over the surface S is a cobordism between S and itself, homologically equivalent to the cylinder over S. The Y-filtration on the monoid of homology cylinders over S is defined by clasper surgery. Using a functorial extension of the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant, we show that the graded Lie algebra associated to the Y-filtration is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of ``symplectic Jacobi diagrams.'' This Lie algebra consists of the primitive elements of a certain Hopf algebra whose multiplication is a diagrammatic analogue of the Moyal-Weyl product. The mapping cylinder construction embeds the Torelli group into the monoid of homology cylinders, sending the lower central series to the Y-filtration. We give a combinatorial description of the graded Lie algebra map induced by this embedding, by connecting Hain's infinitesimal presentation of the Torelli group to the Lie algebra of symplectic Jacobi diagrams. This Lie algebra map is shown to be injective in degree two, and the question of the injectivity in higher degrees is discussed.

On the Kontsevich integral of Brunnian links

The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, we give a short proof using the Kontsevich integral for the fact that the restriction of an invariant of degree 2n to (n+1)-component Brunnian links can be expressed as a quadratic form on the Milnor mu-bar link-homotopy invariants of length n+1. Second, we describe the structure of the Brunnian part of the degree 2n-graded quotient of the Goussarov--Vassiliev filtration for (n+1)-component links.

Bottom tangles and universal invariants

A bottom tangle is a tangle in a cube consisting only of arc components, each of which has the two endpoints on the bottom line of the cube, placed next to each other. We introduce a subcategory B of the category of framed, oriented tangles, which acts on the set of bottom tangles. We give a finite set of generators of B, which provides an especially convenient way to generate all the bottom tangles, and hence all the framed, oriented links, via closure. We also define a kind of "braided Hopf algebra action" on the set of bottom tangles. Using the universal invariant of bottom tangles associated to each ribbon Hopf algebra H, we define a braided functor J from B to the category Mod_H of left H-modules. The functor J, together with the set of generators of B, provides an algebraic method to study the range of quantum invariants of links. The braided Hopf algebra action on bottom tangles is mapped by J to the standard braided Hopf algebra structure for H in Mod_H. Several notions in knot theory, such as genus, unknotting number, ribbon knots, boundary links, local moves, etc are given algebraic interpretations in the setting involving the category B. The functor J provides a convenient way to study the relationships between these notions and quantum invariants.

Refined Kirby calculus for integral homology spheres

A theorem of Kirby states that two framed links in the 3-sphere produce orientation-preserving homeomorphic results of surgery if they are related by a sequence of stabilization and handle-slide moves. The purpose of the present paper is twofold: First, we give a sufficient condition for a sequence of handle-slides on framed links to be able to be replaced with a sequences of algebraically canceling pairs of handle-slides. Then, using the first result, we obtain a refinement of Kirby's calculus for integral homology spheres which involves only +/-1-framed links with zero linking numbers.

Finite type invariants and Milnor invariants for Brunnian links

A link L in the 3-sphere is called Brunnian if every proper sublink of L is trivial. In a previous paper, the first author proved that the restriction to Brunnian links of any Goussarov-Vassiliev finite type invariant of (n+1)-component links of degree<2n is trivial. The purpose of this paper is to study the first nontrivial case. We will show that the restriction of an invariant of degree 2n to (n+1)-component Brunnian links can be expressed as a quadratic form on the Milnor link-homotopy invariants of length n+1.

A functorial LMO invariant for Lagrangian cobordisms

Lagrangian cobordisms are three-dimensional compact oriented cobordisms between once-punctured surfaces, subject to some homological conditions. We extend the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant of homology three-spheres to a functor from the category of Lagrangian cobordisms to a certain category of Jacobi diagrams. We prove some properties of this functorial LMO invariant, including its universality among rational finite-type invariants of Lagrangian cobordisms. Finally, we apply the LMO functor to the study of homology cylinders from the point of view of their finite-type invariants.

An integral form of the quantized enveloping algebra of sl_2 and its completions

We introduce an integral form U of the quantized enveloping algebra of sl_2. The algebra U is just large enough so that the quasi-R-matrix is contained in a completion of U\otimes U. We study several completions of the algebra U, and determine their centers. This study is motivated by a study of integrality properties of the quantum sl_2 invariants of links and integral homology spheres.

A unified Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant for integral homology spheres

We construct an invariant J_M of integral homology spheres M with values in a completion \hat{Z[q]} of the polynomial ring Z[q] such that the evaluation at each root of unity ζgives the the SU(2) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant τ_ζ(M) of M at ζ. Thus J_M unifies all the SU(2) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of M. As a consequence, τ_ζ(M) is an algebraic integer. Moreover, it follows that τ_ζ(M) as a function on ζbehaves like an ``analytic function'' defined on the set of roots of unity. That is, the τ_ζ(M) for all roots of unity are determined by a "Taylor expansion" at any root of unity, and also by the values at infinitely many roots of unity of prime power orders. In particular, τ_ζ(M) for all roots of unity are determined by the Ohtsuki series, which can be regarded as the Taylor expansion at q=1.

Replacing a graph clasper by tree claspers

We prove that two links related by a surgery along a connected, strict graph clasper of degree n are C_n-equivalent, i.e, related by a sequence of surgeries along strict tree claspers of degree n.

On the quantum sl_2 invariants of knots and integral homology spheres

We will announce some results on the values of quantum sl_2 invariants of knots and integral homology spheres. Lawrence's universal sl_2 invariant of knots takes values in a fairly small subalgebra of the center of the h-adic version of the quantized enveloping algebra of sl_2. This implies an integrality result on the colored Jones polynomials of a knot. We define an invariant of integral homology spheres with values in a completion of the Laurent polynomial ring of one variable over the integers which specializes at roots of unity to the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. The definition of our invariant provides a new definition of Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of integral homology spheres.

Cyclotomic completions of polynomial rings

The main object of study in this paper is the completion Z[q]^N=\varprojlim_n Z[q]/((1-q)(1-q^2)...(1-q^n)) of the polynomial ring Z[q], which arises from the study of a new invariant of integral homology 3-spheres with values in Z[q]^N announced by the author, which unifies all the sl_2 Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants at various roots of unity. We show that any element of Z[q]^N is uniquely determined by its power series expansion in q-ζfor each root ζof unity. We also show that any element of Z[q]^N is uniquely determined by its values at the roots of unity. These results may be interpreted that Z[q]^N behaves like a ring of ``holomorphic functions defined on the set of the roots of unity''. We will also study the generalizations of Z[q]^N, which are completions of the polynomial ring R[q] over a commutative ring R with unit with respect to the linear topologies defined by the principal ideals generated by products of powers of cyclotomic polynomials.

Claspers and finite type invariants of links

We introduce the concept of `claspers,' which are surfaces in 3-manifolds with some additional structure on which surgery operations can be performed. Using claspers we define for each positive integer k an equivalence relation on links called `C_k-equivalence,' which is generated by surgery operations of a certain kind called `C_k-moves'. We prove that two knots in the 3-sphere are C_{k+1}-equivalent if and only if they have equal values of Vassiliev-Goussarov invariants of type k with values in any abelian groups. This result gives a characterization in terms of surgery operations of the informations that can be carried by Vassiliev-Goussarov invariants. In the last section we also describe outlines of some applications of claspers to other fields in 3-dimensional topology.
