Three-Dimensional Spiral Beam Injection:Design Principles and Experimental Verification

A proof of principle experiment of Three-dimensional spiral beam injection scheme has been carried out. This injection scheme requires a strongly x-y coupled beam to meet magnetic field distribution through solenoid magnet fringe field. In this paper, we introduce outline of experimental setup, results of x-y coupling adjustment with DC electron beam of 80 keV. The results of this experiment will be evaluated and improvements for actual operation will be discussed.

Beam Operation for Particle Physics and Photon Science with Pulse-to-Pulse Modulation at KEK injector LINAC

The electron and positron accelerator complex at KEK offers unique experimental opportunities in the fields of elementary particle physics with SuperKEKB collider and photon science with two light sources. In order to maximize the experimental performances at those facilities the injector LINAC employs pulse-to-pulse modulation at 50 Hz, injecting beams with diverse properties. The event-based control system effectively manages different beam configurations. This injection scheme was initially designed 15 years ago and has been in full operation since 2019. Over the years, quite a few enhancements have been implemented. As the event-based controls are tightly coupled with microwave systems, machine protection systems and so on, their modifications require meticulous planning. However, the diverse requirements from particle physics and photon science, stemming from the distinct nature of those experiments, often necessitate patient negotiation to meet the demands of both fields. This presentation discusses those operational aspects of the multidisciplinary facility.

Achievement of 200,000 hours of operation at KEK 7-GeV electron 4-GeV positron injector linac

KEK electron positron injector LINAC initiated the injection operation into Photon Factory (PF) light source in 1982. Since then for 39 years, it has served for multiple projects, namely, TRISTAN, PF-AR, KEKB, and SuperKEKB. Its total operation time has accumulated 200 thousand hours on May 7, 2020. We are extremely proud of the achievement following continuous efforts by our seniors. The construction of the injector LINAC started in 1978, and it was commissioned for PF with 2.5 GeV electron in 1982. In parallel, the positron generator linac was constructed for the TRISTAN collider project. The slow positron facility was also commissioned in 1992. After the KEKB asymmetric-energy collider project was commissioned in 1998 with direct energy injections, the techniques such as two-bunch acceleration and simultaneous injection were developed. As the soft structure design of the LINAC was too weak against the great east Japan earthquake, it took three years to recover. Then the construction and commissioning for the SuperKEKB project went on, and the simultaneous top-up injection into four storage rings contributes to the both elementary particle physics and photon science.

Analysis and Stabilization of AC Line Synchronized Timing System for SuperKEKB

A timing system provides high-precision signals to allow the controls over a variety of hardware and software components in the accelerator complex. This is guaranteed by the radio frequency (RF) and trigger signal synchronization for subsystems such as klystrons, pulsed magnets, and beam monitors. The main trigger signal should be distributed throughout the facility and repeated at the beam repetition rate. This trigger signal is usually generated by the same phase of an AC power line to follow the source of the fluctuation of an electrical grid and reduce the unwanted variation of the beam quality. To fulfill the needs of the multi-accelerator facility at KEK, apart from the normal trigger synchronization and bucket selection injection control, a beam operation scheme called the pulse-to-pulse modulation is utilized; hence, the complexity of the timing system increases. Uncertainty in the system and a trigger signal delivery error caused by a drastic AC power line drift are observed. Further, the effort to establish a reliable timing system at KEK and several solutions to improve the system robustness are presented.

SuperKEKB Collider

SuperKEKB, a 7 GeV electron - 4 GeV positron double-ring collider, is constructed by upgrading KEKB in order to seek new physics beyond the Standard Model. The design luminosity of SuperKEKB is 8 x 10^35 /cm^2 /s - 40 times higher than that achieved by KEKB. The greater part of the gain comes from significantly decreasing the beam sizes at the interaction point based on the nanobeam collision scheme; the design beam currents in both rings are double those achieved in KEKB. Large-scale construction to upgrade both the collider rings and the injector was conducted, and beam commissioning without the Belle II detector and final-focus magnets was successfully carried out from February to June in 2016. Subsequently, renovation of the interaction region, including the installation of the final-focus magnets and Belle II, and construction in the final stage of a new positron damping ring were conducted. Having completed the interaction region, beam collision tuning is scheduled from March till July in 2018. This paper reviews the design, construction, and beam commissioning of SuperKEKB.

Accelerator Control System at KEKB and the Linac

KEKB completed all of the technical milestones, and had offered important insights into the flavor structure of elementary particles, especially the CP violation. The accelerator control system at KEKB and injector linac was initiated by a combination of scripting languages at the operation layer and EPICS at the equipment layer. During the project many features were implemented to achieve extreme performance out of the machine. Especially the online linkage to the accelerator simulation played an essential role. In order to further improve the reliability and flexibility two major concepts were additionally introduced later in the project, namely the channel access everywhere and the dual-tier controls. Based on the improved control system a concept of virtual accelerators were realized that enables the single injector linac serve as three separate injectors to KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory, respectively. Those control technologies are indispensable for the future particle accelerators.

Pulse-to-pulse Beam Modulation and Event-based Beam Feedback System at KEKB Linac

Beam injections to KEKB and Photon Factory are performed with pulse-to-pulse modulation at 50 Hz. Three very different beams are switched every 20 ms in order to inject those beams into KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory (PF) simultaneously. Human operators work on one of those three virtual accelerators, which correspond to three-fold accelerator parameters. Beam charges for PF injection and the primary electron for positron generation are 50-times different, and beam energies for PF and HER injection are 3-times different. Thus, the beam stabilities are sensitive to operational parameters, and if any instability in accelerator equipment occurred, beam parameter adjustments for those virtual accelerators have to be performed. In order to cure such a situation, beam energy feedback system was installed that can respond to each of virtual accelerators independently.
