Thermodynamic stability of twisted domains in AgCrSe$_{2}$ thin films grown on lattice-matched YSZ(111) substrate

Control of structural domains in epitaxial thin films of functional materials is a fundamental technique to utilize their intrinsic physical and chemical properties in solid-state devices. In this study, we report on suppression of twisted-domain formation in thin-film growth of polar magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe$_{2}$ using pulsed-laser deposition. In exploring concomitant optimized growth temperature and Ag/Cr composition ratio of supply, we find the critical growth temperature ($T\mathrm{_{sub}}$) for obtaining single 60$^{\circ}$ domain in c-axis oriented AgCrSe$_{2}$ thin film on a lattice-matched (111) plane of the yttria-stabilized zirconia substrate. At temperatures below and above the critical $T\mathrm{_{sub}}$, metastable 0$^{\circ}$ domain in addition to the 60$^{\circ}$ domain emerges, indicating delicate energy balance of thermodynamic stability for obtaining the single-domain structure. Surface structural analysis using time-of-flight low-energy atom scattering spectroscopy reveals the presence of two polar orientations along $+Z$ and $-Z$ directions. These findings provide valuable insights into the thin-film growth mechanisms for a family of two-dimensional compounds with rhombohedral lattices.

Possible Pairing Symmetry of BaPtAs$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ with an Ordered Honeycomb Network

We investigate the possible pairing symmetry of superconducting $\rm{BaPtAs}_{1-\it{x}}\rm{Sb}_{\it{x}}$ solid solution with an ordered-honeycomb network of Pt and pnictogens. A spontaneous internal magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature is observed in BaPtSb ($x = 1$) via the muon-spin relaxation measurement. We then pursue a scenario where the pairing symmetry is changed from a time-reversal symmetry-breaking (TRSB) state to another one by changing the Sb-concentration utilizing the effective tight-binding model obtained from the first principles calculations for $x = 0$ and $x = 1$, at which we see a significant difference in the shape of the dominant Fermi surfaces. We find that the chiral $d$-wave state with TRSB is most stable at $x = 1$, whereas the nodal $f$-wave or the conventional $s$-wave states without TRSB are competitive at $x = 0$.

Zero-field superconducting diode effect induced by magnetic flux in a van der Waals superconductor trigonal PtBi$_2$

The superconducting diode effect is one of the nonreciprocal transport phenomena, where the critical current depends on the current direction. This effect is typically realized in superconductors with broken spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetry. To break the time-reversal symmetry, external magnetic fields are commonly used. Here, we demonstrate a sign-controllable superconducting diode effect under zero external magnetic field in a van der Waals superconductor trigonal PtBi$_2$. The sign of the zero-field superconducting diode effect is controlled by the poling magnetic field, that is a large magnetic field applied prior to measurements. This result indicates that trapped magnetic flux are responsible for breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Our findings highlight the crucial role of trapped magnetic flux in generating the superconducting diode effect and provide a general pathway for realizing a zero-field superconducting diode effect.

Stoichiometry control and epitaxial growth of AgCrSe2 thin films by pulsed-laser deposition

We report on epitaxial growth in thin-film synthesis of a polar magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2 on lattice-matched yttria-stabilized zirconia (111) substrate by pulsed-layer deposition (PLD). By using Ag-rich PLD target to compensate for Ag deficiency in thin films, the nucleation of impurity phases is suppressed, resulting in the c-axis-oriented and single-phase AgCrSe2 thin film. Structural analysis using x-ray diffraction and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals epitaxial growth with the presence of both twisted and polar domains. Optical absorbance spectrum and magnetization measurements show absorption edge at around 0.84 eV and magnetic transition temperature at 41 K, respectively. These values are consistent with the reported values of direct bandgap and Néel temperature of bulk AgCrSe2, reflecting a single-phase and stoichiometric feature of the obtained film. Our demonstration of epitaxial thin-film growth of AgCrSe2 serves as a bedrock for exploration of its potential thermoelectric and spintronic functionalities at surface or heterointerfaces.

Engineered substrates for domain control in CrSe thin-film growth: Single-domain formation on lattice-matched YSZ(111) substrate

Epitaxial thin-film growth is a versatile and powerful technique for achieving a precise control of composition, stabilizing non-equilibrium phases, tailoring growth orientation, as well as forming heterointerfaces of various quantum materials. For synthesis of highly crystalline thin films, in-depth understanding of epitaxial relationship between the desired thin film and the single-crystalline substrates is necessary. In this study, we investigate epitaxial relationship in thin-film growth of triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CrSe on the (001) plane of Al2O3 and the lattice-matched (111) plane of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. Structural characterization using out-of-plane and in-plane x-ray diffraction shows that the presence of 19.1o-twisted domains of CrSe significantly dominates the aligned domain on the Al2O3 substrate while it reveals a single-domain formation on the YSZ substrate. The stability of the 19.1o-twisted domain rather than the aligned domain can be explained by rotational commensurate epitaxy, which is well reproduced by density functional theory calculations. The single-domain CrSe thin film on the YSZ substrate exhibits a superior metallic conductivity compared to the twisted-domain thin film on the Al2O3 substrate, implying contribution of the grain boundary scattering mechanism to electrical transport.

Non-coplanar spin structure in a metallic thin film of triangular lattice antiferromagnet CrSe

An antiferromagnetic metal with two-dimensional triangular network offers a unique playground of intriguing magneto-transport properties and functionalities stemming from interplay between conducting electrons and intricate magnetic phases. A NiAs-type CrSe is one of the candidates owing to alternate stackings of Cr and Se triangular atomic networks in its crystal structure. While fabrication of CrSe thin films is indispensable to develop functional devices, studies on its thin-film properties have been limited to date due to the lack of metallic samples. Here, we report on realization of metallic conductivities of CrSe thin films, which allows to investigate their intrinsic magneto-transport properties. The metallic sample exhibits co-occurrence of a weak ferromagnetism with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the antiferromagnetic behavior, indicating the presence of non-coplanar spin structures. In addition, control of polarity and tilting angle of the non-coplanar spin structure is accomplished by a sign of cooling magnetic fields. The observed non-coplanar spin structure, which can be a source of emergent magnetic field acting on the conducting electrons, highlights a high potential of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet and provide unique platform for functional thin-film devices composed of NiAs-type derivative Cr chalcogenides and pnictides.

Composition-induced structural instability and strong-coupling superconductivity in Au1-xPdxTe2

The physical properties and structural evolution of the MX$_2$-type solid solution Au$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$Te$_2$ are reported. The end member AuTe$_2$ is a normal metal with a monoclinic distorted CdI$_2$-type structure with preformed Te-Te dimers. A monoclinic--trigonal structural phase transition at a finite temperature occurs upon Pd substitution and is suppressed to zero temperature near $x$ = 0.55, and a superconducting phase with a maximum $T_{\rm c}$ = 4.65 K emerges. A clear indication of strong coupling superconductivity is observed near the composition of the structural instability. The competitive relationship between Te-Te dimers and superconductivity is proposed.

Superconductivity in BaPtSb with an Ordered Honeycomb Network

Superconductivity in BaPtSb with the SrPtSb-type structure (space group $P\bar{6}m2$, $D_{3h}^1$, No. 187) is reported. The structure consists of a PtSb ordered honeycomb network that stacks along the $c$-axis so that spatial inversion symmetry is broken globally. Electrical resistivity and specific-heat measurements revealed that the compound exhibited superconductivity at 1.64 K. The noncentrosymmetric structure and the strong spin-orbit coupling of Pt and Sb make BaPtSb an attractive compound for studying the exotic superconductivity predicted for a honeycomb network.

Superconductivity in Hexagonal BaPtAs: SrPtSb- and YPtAs-type Structures with Ordered Honeycomb Network

The crystal structure and superconductivity of hexagonal BaPtAs are reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements were performed in this study. Two hexagonal structures with different PtAs honeycomb network stacking sequences, namely, SrPtSb- (space group $P\bar{6}m2$, $D_{3h}^1$, No. 187) and YPtAs-type ($P6_3/mmc$, $D_{6h}^4$, No. 194) structures, were identified and found to exhibit superconductivity at 2.8 and 2.1-3.0 K, respectively. In contrast, the cubic LaIrSi-type structure ($P2_13$, $T^4$, No. 198) did not exhibit superconductivity above 0.1 K. BaPtAs provides a unique opportunity to study superconductivity with broken and preserved spatial inversion symmetry.

Direct Observation of the Quantum Phase Transition of SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ by High-Pressure and Terahertz Electron Spin Resonance

High-pressure and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been performed on a single crystal of the orthogonal-dimer spin system SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{2}$. With frequencies below 1 THz, ESR signals associated with transitions from the singlet ground state to the one-triplet excited states and the two-triplet bound state were observed at pressures up to 2.1 GPa. We obtained directly the pressure dependence of the gap energies, finding a clear first-order phase transition at $P_{c}=1.85\pm0.05$ GPa. By comparing this pressure dependence with the calculated excitation energies obtained from an exact diagonalization, we determined the precise pressure dependence for inter- ($J'$) and intra-dimer ($J$) exchange interactions considering the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction. Thus this system undergoes a first-order quantum phase transition from the dimer singlet phase to a plaquette singlet phase above the ratio $(J'/J)_{c}=0.660\pm0.003$.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity from Doping-Induced Antiferromagnetic Phase of 112-type Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$FeAs$_{2}$

The effects of pressure on antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting phase transitions of 112-type Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$FeAs$_{2}$ were studied, and the in-plane electrical resistivity $ρ_{ab}$ was measured with an indenter-type pressure cell. The AFM phase transition temperatures of $T_{\rm N}$ = 47, 63, and 63 K at ambient pressure for $x$ = 0.18, 0.21, and 0.26 was suppressed by applying pressure $P$, with superconductivity emerging at critical pressures of $P_{\rm c}$ $\simeq$ 0, 1.5, and 3.4 GPa, respectively. Correspondingly, the slope of $T_{\rm N}$ against $P$ decreased as $dT_{\rm N}/P$ $\simeq$ $-$15 and $-$2 K/GPa for $x$ = 0.21 and 0.26, respectively. Thus, although the AFM phase was stabilized with La doping $x$, the AFM phase was suppressed by pressure, and superconductivity eventually emerged.

Strong-Coupling Superconductivity in BaPd2As2 Induced by Soft Phonons in the ThCr2Si2-type Polymorph

The specific heat of two polymorphs of BaPd2As2 was measured. The ThCr2Si2-type polymorph (space group I4/mmm, $D_{4h}^{17}$, No. 139) is a previously reported superconductor with a transition temperature Tc $\simeq$ 3.5 K, while the CeMg2Si2-type polymorph (P4/mmm, $D_{4h}^{1}$, No. 123) is a normal metal and does not exhibit superconductivity down to 1.8 K. Our results revealed that the ThCr2Si2-type has an anomalously low Debye temperature, indicative of soft phonons, compared to the CeMg2Si2-type. Moreover, a large specific-heat jump at Tc indicated that the superconductivity of ThCr2Si2-type is a strong-coupling type, which is likely derived from soft phonons.

Copper Doping of BaNi$_{2}$As$_{2}$: Giant Phonon Softening and Superconductivity Enhancement

The effects of copper doping on the structural and superconducting phase transitions of Ba(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ were studied by examining the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. We found an abrupt increase in the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ from 0.6 K in the triclinic phase with less copper ($x$ $\leq$ 0.16) to 2.5-3.2 K in the tetragonal phase with more copper ($x$ $>$ 0.16). The specific-heat data suggested that doping-induced phonon softening was responsible for the enhanced superconductivity in the tetragonal phase. All of these observations exhibited striking similarities to those observed in the phosphorus doping of BaNi$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ [K. Kudo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 097002 (2012).], which markedly contrast the behavior of phosphorus and copper doping of the iron-based superconductor BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$.

Site-Selective Antimony Doping in Arsenic Zigzag Chains of 112-type Ca1-xLaxFeAs2

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were performed for the Sb-doped 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 with the superconducting transition temperature Tc of 47 K. Doped Sb preferably substituted not for As(1) in the FeAs layers but for As(2) in the layers of As zigzag chains. Structural reasons for Tc enhancement by Sb doping were discussed.

Doping-Enhanced Antiferromagnetism in Ca1-xLaxFeAs2

In iron pnictides, high temperature superconductivity emerges after suppressing antiferromagnetism by doping. Here we show that antiferromagnetism in Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeAs$_2$ is robust against and even enhanced by doping. Using $^{75}$As-nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques, we find that an antiferromagnetic order occurs below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 62 K at a high doping concentration ($x$ = 0.15) where superconductivity sets in at the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 35 K. Unexpectedly, $T_{\rm N}$ is enhanced with increasing doping, rising up to $T_{\rm N}$ = 70 K at $x$ = 0.24. The obtained phase diagram of this new system enriches the physics of iron-based high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors.

Suppression of Nonmagnetic Insulating State by Application of Pressure in Mineral Tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$

The mineral tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ exhibits a first-order metal--insulator transition (MIT) at $T_{\rm MI}$ = 85 K and ambient pressure. We measured the $^{63}$Cu-NMR at ambient pressure and the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at high pressures. $^{63}$Cu-NMR results indicate a nonmagnetic insulating ground state in this compound. The MIT is monotonically suppressed by pressure and disappears at $\sim1.0$ GPa. Two other anomalies are observed in the resistivity measurements, and the pressure -- temperature phase diagram of Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ is constructed.

Superconductivity in MgPtSi: An orthorhombic variant of MgB2

A ternary compound, MgPtSi, was synthesized by solid-state reaction. An examination of the compound by powder X-ray diffraction revealed that it crystallizes in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure with the Pnma space group. The structure comprises alternately stacked layers of Mg and PtSi honeycomb network, which is reminiscent of MgB2, and the buckling of the honeycomb network causes orthorhombic distortion. Electrical and magnetic studies revealed that MgPtSi exhibited superconductivity with a transition temperature of 2.5 K. However, its isostructural compounds, namely, MgRhSi and MgIrSi, were not found to exhibit superconductivity.
