Bifurcation-based quantum annealing with nested spins

We study a bifurcation mechanism of quantum annealing. Using spins with quantum number S=1, we construct a simple model to make a bifurcation. The qutrit can be composed by nesting two qubits. We numerically solve the Schroedinger equation to confirm that the bifurcation-based quantum annealing (BQA) works well and the ground state can be found efficiently. The result is compared with that by the standard quantum annealing (QA) using qubits. We find that the performance of the BQA is comparable to the standard QA, or gives better results in some cases.

Hamiltonian engineering for adiabatic quantum computation: Lessons from shortcuts to adiabaticity

We discuss applications of shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) to adiabatic quantum computation. After reviewing the fundamental properties and the present status of STA from the author's personal point of view, we apply the method to the adiabatic algorithm of the Grover's problem. We discuss two possible implementations of STA for the adiabatic quantum computations: the method of quantum adiabatic brachistochrone and the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant-based inverse engineering.

Counterdiabatic Hamiltonians for multistate Landau-Zener problem

We study the Landau-Zener transitions generalized to multistate systems. Based on the work by Sinitsyn et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 190402 (2018)], we introduce the auxiliary Hamiltonians that are interpreted as the counterdiabatic terms. We find that the counterdiabatic Hamiltonians satisfy the zero curvature condition. The general structures of the auxiliary Hamiltonians are studied in detail and the time-evolution operator is evaluated by using a deformation of the integration contour and asymptotic forms of the auxiliary Hamiltonians. For several spin models with transverse field, we calculate the transition probability between the initial and final ground states and find that the method is useful to study nonadiabatic regime.

Quantum Interactions of Topological Solitons from Electrodynamics

The Casimir energy for the classically stable configurations of the topological solitons in 2D quantum antiferromagnets is studied by performing the path-integral over quantum fluctuations. The magnon fluctuation around the solitons saturating the Bogomol'nyi inequality may be viewed as a charged scalar field coupled with an effective magnetic field induced by the solitons. The magnon-soliton couping is closely related to the Pauli Hamiltonian, with which the effective action is calculated by adapting the worldline formulation of the derivative expansion for the 2+1d quantum electrodynamics in an external field. The resulting framework is more flexible than the conventional scattering analysis based on the Dashen-Hasslacher-Neveu formula. We obtain a short-range attractive well and a universal long-range $1/r$-type repulsive potential between two solitons.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity applied to nonequilibrium entropy production: An information geometry viewpoint

We apply the method of shortcuts to adiabaticity to nonequilibrium systems. For unitary dynamics, the system Hamiltonian is separated into two parts. One of them defines the adiabatic states for the state to follow and the nonadiabatic transitions are prevented by the other part. This property is implemented to the nonequilibrium entropy production and we find that the entropy is separated into two parts. The separation represents the Pythagorean theorem for the Kullback-Leibler divergence and an information-geometric interpretation is obtained. We also study a lower bound of the entropy, which is applied to derive a trade-off relation between time, entropy and state distance.

Complex semiclassical analysis of the Loschmidt amplitude and dynamical quantum phase transitions

We propose a new computational method of the Loschmidt amplitude in a generic spin system on the basis of the complex semiclassical analysis on the spin-coherent state path integral. We demonstrate how the dynamical transitions emerge in the time evolution of the Loschmidt amplitude for the infinite-range transverse Ising model with a longitudinal field, exposed by a quantum quench of the transverse field $Γ$ from $\infty$ or $0$. For both initial conditions, we obtain the dynamical phase diagrams that show the presence or absence of the dynamical transition in the plane of transverse field after a quantum quench and the longitudinal field. The results of semiclassical analysis are verified by numerical experiments. Experimental observation of our findings on the dynamical transition is also discussed.

Quantum-Classical Correspondence of Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

We formulate the theory of shortcuts to adiabaticity in classical mechanics. For a reference Hamiltonian, the counterdiabatic term is constructed from the dispersionless Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy. Then the adiabatic theorem holds exactly for an arbitrary choice of time-dependent parameters. We use the Hamilton-Jacobi theory to define the generalized action. The action is independent of the history of the parameters and is directly related to the adiabatic invariant. The dispersionless KdV hierarchy is obtained from the classical limit of the KdV hierarchy for the quantum shortcuts to adiabaticity. This correspondence suggests some relation between the quantum and classical adiabatic theorems.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity for quantum annealing

We study the Ising Hamiltonian with a transverse field term to simulate the quantum annealing. Using shortcuts to adiabaticity, we design the time dependence of the Hamiltonian. The dynamical invariant is obtained by the mean-field ansatz, and the Hamiltonian is designed by the inverse engineering. We show that the time dependence of physical quantities such as the magnetization is independent of the speed of the Hamiltonian variation in the infinite-range model. We also show that rotating transverse magnetic fields are useful to achieve the ideal time evolution.

From Classical Nonlinear Integrable Systems to Quantum Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Using shortcuts to adiabaticity, we solve the time-dependent Schroedinger equation that is reduced to a classical nonlinear integrable equation. For a given time-dependent Hamiltonian, the counterdiabatic term is introduced to prevent nonadiabatic transitions. Using the fact that the equation for the dynamical invariant is equivalent to the Lax equation in nonlinear integrable systems, we obtain the counterdiabatic term exactly. The counterdiabatic term is available when the corresponding Lax pair exists and the solvable systems are classified in a unified and systematic way. Multisoliton potentials obtained from the Korteweg-de Vries equation and isotropic XY spin chains from the Toda equations are studied in detail.

Optimization of Markov process violates detailed balance condition

We consider the optimization of Markovian dynamics to pursue the fastest convergence to the stationary state. The brachistochrone method is applied to the continuous-time master equation for finite-size systems. The principle of least action leads to a brachistochrone equation for the transition-rate matrix. Three-state systems are explicitly analyzed, and we find that the solution violates the detailed balance condition. The properties of the solution are studied in detail to observe the optimality of the solution. We also discuss the counterdiabatic driving for the Markovian dynamics. The transition-rate matrix is then divided into two parts, and the state is given by an eigenstate of the first part. The second part violates the detailed balance condition and plays the role of a counterdiabatic term.

Unitary deformations of counterdiabatic driving

We study a deformation of the counterdiabatic-driving Hamiltonian as a systematic strategy for an adiabatic control of quantum states. Using a unitary transformation, we design a convenient form of the driver Hamiltonian. We apply the method to a particle in a confining potential and discrete systems to find explicit forms of the Hamiltonian and discuss the general properties. The method is derived by using the quantum brachistochrone equation, which shows the existence of a nontrivial dynamical invariant in the deformed system.

Fast-forward scaling in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space

Time evolution of quantum systems is accelerated by the fast-forward scaling. We reformulate the method to study systems in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. For several simple systems, we explicitly construct the acceleration potential. We also use our formulation to accelerate the adiabatic dynamics. Applying the method to the transitionless quantum driving, we find that the fast-forward potential can be understood as a counterdiabatic term.

Zeros of the partition function and dynamical singularities in spin-glass systems

We study spin-glass systems characterized by continuous occurrence of singularities. The theory of Lee-Yang zeros is used to find the singularities. By using the replica method in mean-field systems, we show that two-dimensional distributions of zeros of the partition function in a complex parameter plane are characteristic feature of random systems. The results of several models indicate that the concept of chaos in the spin-glass state is different from that of the replica symmetry breaking. We discuss that a chaotic phase at imaginary temperature is different from the spin-glass phase and is accessible by quantum dynamics in a quenching protocol.

How fast and robust is the quantum adiabatic passage?

We study the assisted adiabatic passage, and equivalently the transitionless quantum driving, as a quantum brachistochrone trajectory. The optimal Hamiltonian for given constraints is constructed from the quantum brachistochrone equation. We discuss how the adiabatic passage is realized as the solution of the equation. The formulation of the quantum brachistochrone is based on the principle of least action. We utilize it to discuss the stability of the adiabatic passage.

Transitionless quantum driving for spin systems

We apply the method of transitionless quantum driving for time-dependent quantum systems to spin systems. For a given Hamiltonian, the driving Hamiltonian is constructed so that the adiabatic states of the original system obey the Schroedinger equation. For several typical systems such as the XY spin chain and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, the driving Hamiltonian is constructed explicitly. We discuss possible interesting situations when the driving Hamiltonian becomes time independent and when the driving Hamiltonian is equivalent to the original one. For many-body systems, a crucial problem occurs at the quantum phase transition point where the energy gap between the ground and first excited states becomes zero. We discuss how the defect can be circumvented in the present method.

Dynamical Singularities of Glassy Systems in a Quantum Quench

We present a prototype of behavior of glassy systems driven by quantum dynamics in a quenching protocol by analyzing the random energy model in a transverse field. We calculate several types of dynamical quantum amplitude and find a freezing transition at some critical time. The behavior is understood by the partition-function zeros in the complex temperature plane. We discuss the properties of the freezing phase as a dynamical chaotic phase, which are contrasted to those of the spin-glass phase in the static system.

Partition-function zeros of spherical spin glasses and their relevance to chaos

We investigate partition-function zeros of the many-body interacting spherical spin glass, the so-called $p$-spin spherical model, with respect to the complex temperature in the thermodynamic limit. We use the replica method and extend the procedure of the replica symmetry breaking ansatz to be applicable in the complex-parameter case. We derive the phase diagrams in the complex-temperature plane and calculate the density of zeros in each phase. Near the imaginary axis away from the origin, there is a replica symmetric phase having a large density. On the other hand, we observe no density in the spin-glass phases, irrespective of the replica symmetry breaking. We speculate that this suggests the absence of the temperature chaos. To confirm this, we investigate the multiple many-body interacting case which is known to exhibit the chaos effect. The result shows that the density of zeros actually takes finite values in the spin-glass phase, even on the real axis. These observations indicate that the density of zeros is more closely connected to the chaos effect than the replica symmetry breaking.
