Moduli space volume of vortex and localization

Volume of moduli space of BPS vortices on a compact genus h Riemann surface Sigma_h is evaluated by means of topological field theory and localization technique. Vortex in Abelian gauge theory with a single charged scalar field (ANO vortex) is studied first and is found that the volume of the moduli space agrees with the previous results obtained more directly by integrating over the moduli space metric. Next we extend the evaluation to non-Abelian gauge groups and multi-flavors of scalar fields in the fundamental representation. We find that the result of localization can be consistently understood in terms of moduli matrix formalism wherever possible. More details are found in our paper in Prog.Theor.Phys.126 (2011) 637.

Volume of Moduli Space of Vortex Equations and Localization

We evaluate volume of moduli space of BPS vortices on a compact Riemann surface by using topological field theory and localization technique developed by Moore, Nekrasov and Shatashvili. We apply this technique to Abelian (ANO) vortex and show that the volume of moduli space agrees with the previous results obtained by integrating over the moduli space metric. We extend the evaluation to non-Abelian gauge groups and multi-flavors. We also compare our results with the volume of the Kahler quotient space inspired by the brane configuration.

Non-Abelian Gauge Field Localized on Walls with Four-Dimensional World Volume

A mechanism using the position-dependent gauge coupling is proposed to localize non-Abelian gauge fields on domain walls in five-dimensional space-time. Low-energy effective theory posseses a massless vector field, and a mass gap. The four-dimensional gauge invariance is maintained intact. We obtain perturbatively the four-dimensional Coulomb law for static sources on the domain wall. BPS domain wall solutions with the localization mechanism are explicitly constructed in the U(1)xU(1) supersymmetric gauge theory coupling to the non-Abelian gauge fields only through the cubic prepotential, which is consistent with the general principle of supersymmetry in five-dimensional space-time.

Two-Dimensional Gauge Theory and Matrix Model

We study a matrix model obtained by dimensionally reducing Chern-Simon theory on S^3. We find that the matrix integration is decomposed into sectors classified by the representation of SU(2). We show that the N-block sectors reproduce SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on S^2 as the matrix size goes to infinity.

Duality cascade of softly broken supersymmetric theories

We study the duality cascade of softly broken supersymmetric theories. We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SUSY breaking terms as well as supersymmetric couplings. It is found that the magnitudes of SUSY breaking terms are suppressed in most regimes of the RG flow through the duality cascade. At one stage of cascading, the gaugino mass of the strongly coupled sector and scalar masses converge to certain values, which are determined by the gauge coupling and the gaugino mass of the weakly coupled sector. At the next stage, the strongly and weakly coupled sectors are interchanged with each other. We also show the possibility that cascading would be terminated by the gauge symmetry breaking, which is induced by the so-called B-term.

Extended MQCD and SUSY/non-SUSY duality

We study the SUSY/non-SUSY duality proposed by Aganagic et al. from Type IIA string and M-theory perspectives. We find that our brane configuration generalizes the so-called $extended$ Seiberg-Witten theory on the one hand, and provides a way to realize non-SUSY vacua by intersecting NS5-branes on the other hand. We also argue how the partial SUSY breaking from $\Ncal=2$ down to $\Ncal=1$ can be clearly visualized through the brane picture.

On relationships among Chern-Simons theory, BF theory and matrix model

Chern-Simons theory on a U(1) bundle over a Riemann surface Σ_g of genus g is dimensionally reduced to BF theory with a mass term, which is equivalent to the two-dimensional Yang-Mills on Σ_g. We show that the former is inversely obtained from the latter by the extended matrix T-duality developed in hep-th/0703021. For the case of g=0 (i.e. S^2), the U(1) bundle represents the lens space S^3/Z_p. We find that in this case both the Chern-Simons theory and the BF theory with the mass term are realized in a matrix model. We also construct Wilson loops in the matrix model that correspond to those in the Chern-Simons theory on S^3.

Intersecting Solitons, Amoeba and Tropical Geometry

We study generic intersection (or web) of vortices with instantons inside, which is a 1/4 BPS state in the Higgs phase of five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory on R_t \times (C^\ast)^2 \simeq R^{2,1} \times T^2 with Nf=Nc Higgs scalars in the fundamental representation. In the case of the Abelian-Higgs model (Nf=Nc=1), the intersecting vortex sheets can be beautifully understood in a mathematical framework of amoeba and tropical geometry, and we propose a dictionary relating solitons and gauge theory to amoeba and tropical geometry. A projective shape of vortex sheets is described by the amoeba. Vortex charge density is uniformly distributed among vortex sheets, and negative contribution to instanton charge density is understood as the complex Monge-Ampere measure with respect to a plurisubharmonic function on (C^\ast)^2. The Wilson loops in T^2 are related with derivatives of the Ronkin function. The general form of the Kahler potential and the asymptotic metric of the moduli space of a vortex loop are obtained as a by-product. Our discussion works generally in non-Abelian gauge theories, which suggests a non-Abelian generalization of the amoeba and tropical geometry.

Counting BPS Solitons and Applications

We propose a novel and simple method of computing the volume of the moduli space of BPS solitons in supersymmetric gauge theory. We use a D-brane realization of vortices and T-duality relation to domain walls. We there use a special limit where domain walls reduce to gas of hard (soft) one-dimensional rods for the Abelian (non-Abelian) cases. In the simpler cases of the Abelian-Higgs model on a torus, our results agree with exact results which are geometrically derived by an explicit integration over the moduli space of the vortices. On the other side of the limit, we can compute the volume of the moduli space in the combinatorial way, where the problem on the random (plane) partition appears as well as the four dimensional instanton calculus. A part of this talk is based on collaboration with M. Eto, T. Fujimori, M. Nitta, K. Ohashi and N. Sakai [hep-th/0703197].

A Lattice Formulation of Two Dimensional Topological Field Theory

We propose a non-perturbative criterion to investigate whether supersymmetric lattice gauge theories preserving partial SUSY can have the desired continuum limit or not. Since the target continuum theories of the lattice models are extended supersymmetric gauge theories including the topological field theory (TFT) as a special subsector, the continuum limits of them should reproduce the properties of the TFT. Therefore, whether the property of the TFT can be recovered at the continuum limit becomes a non-perturbative criterion. Then we accept it as a criterion. In this paper, among the topological properties, we investigate the BRST cohomology on the two dimensional ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ CKKU lattice model without moduli fixing mass term. We show that the BRST cohomology in the target continuum theory cannot be realized from the BRST cohomology on the lattice. From this result, we obtain the possible implication that the ${\mathcal N} = (4,4)$ CKKU model cannot recover the target continuum theory if the non-perturbative effects are taken into account.

Statistical Mechanics of Vortices from D-branes and T-duality

We propose a novel and simple method to compute the partition function of statistical mechanics of local and semi-local BPS vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model and its non-Abelian extension on a torus. We use a D-brane realization of the vortices and T-duality relation to domain walls. We there use a special limit where domain walls reduce to gas of hard (soft) one-dimensional rods for Abelian (non-Abelian) cases. In the simpler cases of the Abelian-Higgs model on a torus, our results agree with exact results which are geometrically derived by an explicit integration over the moduli space of vortices. The equation of state for U(N) gauge theory deviates from van der Waals one, and the second virial coefficient is proportional to 1/sqrt{N}, implying that non-Abelian vortices are "softer" than Abelian vortices. Vortices on a sphere are also briefly discussed.

Lattice Formulation of Two Dimensional Topological Field Theory

We investigate an integrable property and observables of 2 dimensional N=(4,4) topological field theory defined on a discrete lattice by using the "orbifolding" and "deconstruction" methods. We show that our lattice model possesses the integrability and the partition function reduces to matrix integrals of scalar fields on sites in consequence. We make clear meaningful differences between the discrete lattice and differentiable manifold, which would be important to a study of topological quantities on the lattice. We also propose a new construction of N=(2,2) supersymmetric lattice theory, which is realized by a suitable truncation of scalar fields from the N=(4,4) theory.

Construction of Instantons via Tachyon Condensation

We investigate the D-brane bound states from the viewpoint of the unstable D/\bar{D}-system and their tachyon condensation. We consider two systems; a system of k D(-1)-branes and N D3-branes with open strings connecting them and a system of N D3-branes with open strings corresponding to the k-instanton flux, both of which are realized through the tachyon condensation from (N+2k) D3-branes and 2k \bar{D3}-branes with appropriate tachyon profiles. It can be shown that these systems are related with each other through a unitary gauge transformation of the D3/\bar{D3}-system. We construct an explicit form of the gauge transformation and show that the essential elements of the ADHM construction naturally arise from the explicit form of the gauge transformation. As a result, the ADHM construction is understood as an outcome of this gauge equivalence in different low energy limits. The small instanton singularities can be also understood in this context. Other kinds of solitons with different codimensions are also discussed from the view point of the tachyon condensation.

Localization on the D-brane, two-dimensional gauge theory and matrix models

We consider the effective topological field theory on Euclidean D-strings wrapping on a 2-cycle in the internal space. We evaluate the vev of a suitable operator corresponding to the chemical potential of vortices bounded to the D-strings, and find that it reduces to the partition function of generalized two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory as a result of localization. We argue that the partition function gives a grand canonical ensemble of multi-instanton corrections for four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory in a suitable large N limit. We find two-dimensional gauge theories that provide the instanton partition function for four-dimensional N=2 theories with the hypermultiplets in the adjoint and fundamental representations. We also propose a partition function that gives the instanton contributions to four-dimensional N=2 quiver gauge theory. We discuss the relation between Nekrasov's instanton partition function and the Dijkgraaf-Vafa theory in terms of large N phase transitions of the generalized two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory.

Non-Abelian Vortices on Cylinder -- Duality between vortices and walls

We investigate vortices on a cylinder in supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. We identify moduli space of periodic vortices and find that a pair of wall-like objects appears as the vortex moduli is varied. Usual domain walls also can be obtained from the single vortex on the cylinder by introducing a twisted boundary condition. We can understand these phenomena as a T-duality among D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. Using this T-duality picture, we find a one-to-one correspondence between the moduli space of non-Abelian vortices and that of kinky D-brane configurations for domain walls.

D-brane Configurations for Domain Walls and Their Webs

Supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf massive hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation admits various BPS solitons like domain walls and their webs. In the first part we show as a review of the previous paper hep-th/0412024 that domain walls are realized as kinky fractional D3-branes interpolating between separated D7-branes. In the second part we discuss brane configurations for domain wall webs. This is a contribution to the conference based on the talk given by MN.

D-brane Construction for Non-Abelian Walls

Supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf massive hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation is given by the brane configuration made of Nc fractional Dp-branes stuck at the Z_2 orbifold singularity on Nf separated D(p+4)-branes. We show that non-Abelian walls in this theory are realized as kinky fractional Dp-branes interpolating between D(p+4)-branes. Wall solutions and their duality between Nc and Nf - Nc imply extensions of the s-rule and the Hanany-Witten effect in brane dynamics. We also find that the reconnection of fractional D-branes occurs in this system. Diverse phenomena in non-Abelian walls found in field theory can be understood very easily by this brane configuration.

Global Structure of Moduli Space for BPS Walls

We study the global structure of the moduli space of BPS walls in the Higgs branch of supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges. We examine the structure in the neighborhood of a special Lagrangian submanifold M, and find that the dimension of the moduli space can be larger than that naively suggested by the index theorem, contrary to previous examples of BPS solitons. We investigate BPS wall solutions in an explicit example of M using Abelian gauge theory. Its Higgs branch turns out to contain several special Lagrangian submanifolds including M. We show that the total moduli space of BPS walls is the union of these submanifolds. We also find interesting dynamics between BPS walls as a byproduct of the analysis. Namely, mutual repulsion and attraction between BPS walls sometimes forbid a movement of a wall and lock it in a certain position; we also find that a pair of walls can transmute to another pair of walls with different tension after they pass through.
