Cosmological perturbations in the DGP braneworld: numeric solution

We solve for the behaviour of cosmological perturbations in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model using a new numerical method. Unlike some other approaches in the literature, our method uses no approximations other than linear theory and is valid on large scales. We examine the behaviour of late-universe density perturbations for both the self-accelerating and normal branches of DGP cosmology. Our numerical results can form the basis of a detailed comparison between the DGP model and cosmological observations.

Spherical collapse in modified gravity with the Birkhoff-theorem

We study structure formation in a phenomenological model of modified gravity which interpolates between LambdaCDM and phenomenological DGP-gravity. Generalisation of spherical collapse by using the Birkhoff-theorem along with the modified growth equation shows that the overdensity for spherical collapse delta_c in these models is significantly lowered compared to LambdaCDM, leading to enhanced number densities of massive clusters and enhanced cluster merging rates. We find that delta_c(z) is well fitted by a function of the form delta_c(z) = a - b\exp(-cz). We examine the sensitivity of PLANCK's and SPT's Sunyaev-Zel'dovich survey to constrain the modified gravity parameterisation and find that these experiments can easily distinguish between models with a cosmological constant and modified gravity, if prior constraints from CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies are included.

Low energy effective theory on a regularized brane in 6D gauged chiral supergravity

We derive the low energy effective theory on a brane in six-dimensional chiral supergravity. The conical 3-brane singularities are resolved by introducing cylindrical codimension one 4-branes whose interiors are capped by a regular spacetime. The effective theory is described by the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory with the BD parameter given by $ω_{\rm BD}=1/2$. The BD field is originated from a modulus which is associated with the scaling symmetry of the system. If the dilaton potentials on the branes preserve the scaling symmetry, the scalar field has an exponential potential in the Einstein frame. We show that the time dependent solutions driven by the modulus in the four-dimensional effective theory can be lifted up to the six-dimensional exact solutions found in the literature. Based on the effective theory, we discuss a possible way to stabilize the modulus to recover standard cosmology and also study the implication for the cosmological constant problem.

Ghosts in the self-accelerating universe

The self-accelerating universe realizes the accelerated expansion of the universe at late times by large-distance modification of general relativity without a cosmological constant. The Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model provides an explicit example of the self-accelerating universe. Recently, the DGP model becomes very popular to study the observational consequences of the modified gravity models as an alternative to dark energy models in GR. However, it has been shown that the self-accelerating universe in the DGP model contains a ghost at the linearized level. The ghost carries negative energy densities and it leads to the instability of the spacetime. In this article, we review the origin of the ghost in the self-accelerating universe and explore the physical implication of the existence of the ghost.

Brane-world inflation: slow-roll corrections to the spectral index

We quantify the slow-roll corrections to primordial density perturbations arising from inflation driven by a four-dimensional scalar field with a monomial potential in a five-dimensional non-compact bulk spacetime. Although the difference between the classical brane-world solutions and standard four-dimensional solutions is large at early times, the change to the amplitude at late times of perturbations generated from quantum fluctuations is first-order in slow-roll parameters, leading to second-order slow-roll corrections to the spectral index. This confirms that the leading-order effects are correctly given by previous work in the literature.

The cosmological constant and dark energy in braneworlds

We review recent attempts to address the cosmological constant problem and the late-time acceleration of the Universe based on braneworld models. In braneworld models, the way in which the vacuum energy gravitates in the 4D spacetime is radically different from conventional 4D physics. It is possible that the vacuum energy on a brane does not curve the 4D spacetime and only affects the geometry of the extra-dimensions, offering a solution to the cosmological constant problem. We review the idea of supersymmetric large extra dimensions that could achieve this and also provide a natural candidate for a quintessence field. We also review the attempts to explain the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe from the large-distance modification of gravity based on the braneworld. We use the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model to demonstrate how one can distinguish this model from dark energy models in 4D general relativity. Theoretical difficulties in this approach are also addressed.

Bubbles in the Self-Accelerating Universe

We revisit the issue of the stability in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model, by considering the nucleation of bubbles of the conventional branch within the self-accelerating branch. We construct an instanton describing this process in the thin wall approximation. On one side of the bubble wall, the bulk consists of the exterior of the brane while on the other side it is the interior. The solution requires the presence of a 2-brane (the bubble wall) which induces the transition. However, we show that this instanton cannot be realized as the thin wall limit of any smooth solution. Once the bubble thickness is resolved, the equations of motion do not allow O(4) symmetric solutions joining the two branches. We conclude that the thin wall instanton is unphysical, and that one cannot have processes connecting the two branches, unless negative tension bubble walls are introduced. This also suggests that the self-accelerating branch does not decay into the conventional branch nucleating bubbles. We comment on other kinds of bubbles that could interpolate between the two branches.

Scalar perturbations in braneworld cosmology

We study the behaviour of scalar perturbations in the radiation-dominated era of Randall-Sundrum braneworld cosmology by numerically solving the coupled bulk and brane master wave equations. We find that density perturbations with wavelengths less than a critical value (set by the bulk curvature length) are amplified during horizon re-entry. This means that the radiation era matter power spectrum will be at least an order of magnitude larger than the predictions of general relativity (GR) on small scales. Conversely, we explicitly confirm from simulations that the spectrum is identical to GR on large scales. Although this magnification is not relevant for the cosmic microwave background or measurements of large scale structure, it will have some bearing on the formation of primordial black holes in Randall-Sundrum models.

Coupled bulk and brane fields about a de Sitter brane

We consider the evolution of a bulk scalar field in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime linearly coupled to a scalar field on a de Sitter boundary brane. We present results of a spectral analysis of the system, and find that the model can exhibit both bound and continuum resonant modes. We find that zero, one, or two bound states may exist, depending upon the masses of the brane and bulk fields relative to the Hubble length and the AdS curvature scale and the coupling strength. In all cases, we find a critical coupling above which there exists a tachyonic bound state. We show how the 5-dimensional spectral results can be interpreted in terms of a 4-dimensional effective theory for the bound states. We find excellent agreement between our analytic results and the results of a new numerical code developed to model the evolution of bulk fields coupled to degrees of freedom on a moving brane. This code can be used to model the behaviour of braneworld cosmological perturbations in scenarios for which no analytic results are known.

Ekpyrotic collapse with multiple fields

A scale invariant spectrum of isocurvature perturbations is generated during collapse in the scaling solution in models where two or more fields have steep negative exponential potentials. The scale invariance of the spectrum is realised by a tachyonic instability in the isocurvature field. We show that this instability is due to the fact that the scaling solution is a saddle point in the phase space. The late time attractor is identified with a single field dominated ekpyrotic collapse in which a steep blue spectrum for isocurvature perturbations is found. Although quantum fluctuations do not necessarily to disrupt the classical solution, an additional preceding stage is required to establish classical homogeneity.

Unexorcized ghost in DGP brane world

The braneworld model of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati realizes the self-accelerating universe. However, it is known that this cosmological solution contains a spin-2 ghost. We study the possibility of avoiding the appearance of the ghost by slightly modifying the model, introducing the second brane. First we consider a simple model without stabilization of the separation of the brane. By changing the separation between the branes, we find we can erase the spin-2 ghost. However, this can be done only at the expense of the appearance of a spin-0 ghost instead. We discuss why these two different types of ghosts are correlated. Then, we examine a model with stabilization of the brane separation. Even in this case, we find that the correlation between spin-0 and spin-2 ghosts remains. As a result we find we cannot avoid the appearance of ghost by two-branes model.

Non-linear interactions in a cosmological background in the DGP braneworld

We study quasi-static perturbations in a cosmological background in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model. We identify the Vainshtein radius at which the non-linear interactions of the brane bending mode become important in a cosmological background. The Vainshtein radius in the early universe is much smaller than the one in the Minkowski background, but in a self-accelerating universe it is the same as the Minkowski background. Our result shows that the perturbative approach is applicable beyond the Vainshtein radius for weak gravity by taking into account the second order effects of the brane bending mode. The linearised cosmological perturbations are shown to be smoothly matched to the solutions inside the Vainshtein radius. We emphasize the importance of imposing a regularity condition in the bulk by solving the 5D perturbations and we highlight the problem of ad hoc assumptions on the bulk gravity that lead to different conclusions.

Primordial perturbations from slow-roll inflation on a brane

In this paper we quantise scalar perturbations in a Randall-Sundrum-type model of inflation where the inflaton field is confined to a single brane embedded in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-time. In the high energy regime, small-scale inflaton fluctuations are strongly coupled to metric perturbations in the bulk and gravitational back-reaction has a dramatic effect on the behaviour of inflaton perturbations on sub-horizon scales. This is in contrast to the standard four-dimensional result where gravitational back-reaction can be neglected on small scales. Nevertheless, this does not give rise to significant particle production, and the correction to the power spectrum of the curvature perturbations on super-horizon scales is shown to be suppressed by a slow-roll parameter. We calculate the complete first order slow-roll corrections to the spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations.

Numerical study of curvature perturbations in a brane-world inflation at high-energies

We study the evolution of scalar curvature perturbations in a brane-world inflation model in a 5D Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The inflaton perturbations are confined to a 4D brane but they are coupled to the 5D bulk metric perturbations. We numerically solve full coupled equations for the inflaton perturbations and the 5D metric perturbations using Hawkins-Lidsey inflationary model. At an initial time, we assume that the bulk is unperturbed. We find that the inflaton perturbations at high energies are strongly coupled to the bulk metric perturbations even on subhorizon scales, leading to the suppression of the amplitude of the comoving curvature perturbations at a horizon crossing. This indicates that the linear perturbations of the inflaton field does not obey the usual 4D Klein-Gordon equation due to the coupling to 5D gravitational field on small scales and it is required to quantise the coupled brane-bulk system in a consistent way in order to calculate the spectrum of the scalar perturbations in a brane-world inflation.

On the 4D effective theory in warped compactifications with fluxes and branes

We present a systematic way to derive the four-dimensional effective theories for warped compactifications with fluxes and branes in the ten-dimensional type IIB supergravity. The ten-dimensional equations of motion are solved using the gradient expansion method and the effective four-dimensional equations of motions are derived by imposing the consistency condition that the total derivative terms with respect to the six-dimensional internal coordinates vanish when integrated over the internal manifold. By solving the effective four-dimensional equations, we can find the gravitational backreaction to the warped geometry due to the dynamics of moduli fields, branes and fluxes.

Moduli instability in warped compactification - 4D effective theory approach

We consider a 5D BPS dilatonic two brane model which reduces to the Randall-Sundrum model or the Horava-Witten theory for a particular choice of parameters. Recently new dynamical solutions were found by Chen et al., which describe a moduli instability of the warped geometry. Using a 4D effective theory derived by solving the 5D equations of motion, based on the gradient expansion method, we show that the exact solution of Chen et. al. can be reproduced within the 4D effective theory and we identify the origin of the moduli instability. We revisit the gradient expansion method with a new metric ansatz to clarify why the 4D effective theory solution can be lifted back to an exact 5D solution. Finally we argue against a recent claim that the 4D effective theory allows a much wider class of solutions than the 5D theory and provide a way to lift solutions in the 4D effective theory to 5D solutions perturbatively in terms of small velocities of the branes.

Inflaton perturbations in brane-world cosmology with induced gravity

We study cosmological perturbations in the brane models with an induced Einstein-Hilbert term on a brane. We consider an inflaton confined to a de Sitter brane in a five-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Inflaton fluctuations excite Kaluza-Klein modes of bulk metric perturbations with mass $m^2 = -2(2\ell-1) (\ell +1) H^2$ and $m^2 = -2\ell(2\ell+3) H^2$ where $\ell$ is an integer. There are two branches ($\pm$ branches) of solutions for the background spacetime. In the $+$ branch, which includes the self-accelerating universe, a resonance appears for a mode with $m^2 = 2 H^2$ due to a spin-0 perturbation with $m^2 = 2H^2$. The self-accelerating universe has a distinct feature because there is also a helicity-0 mode of spin-2 perturbations with $m^2 = 2H^2$. In the $-$ branch, which can be thought as the Randall-Sundrum type brane-world with the high energy quantum corrections, there is no resonance. At high energies, we analytically confirm that four-dimensional Einstein gravity is recovered, which is related to the disappearance of van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity in de Sitter spacetime. On sufficiently small scales, we confirm that the lineariaed gravity on the brane is well described by the Brans-Dicke theory with $ω=3Hr_c$ in $-$ branch and $ω= -3H r_c$ in $+$ branch, respectively, which confirms the existence of the ghost in $+$ branch. We also study large scale perturbations. In $+$ branch, the resonance induces a non-trivial anisotropic stress on the brane via the projection of Weyl tensor in the bulk, but no instability is shown to exist on the brane.

Enhanced gravitational scattering from large extra dimensions

We investigate whether enhanced gravitational scattering on small scales (< 0.1mm), which becomes possible in models with large extra dimensions, can establish statistical equilibrium between different particle species in the early Universe. We calculate the classical relativistic energy transfer rate for two species with a large ratio between their masses for a general elastic scattering cross section. Although the classical calculation suggests that ultra-light WIMPs (e.g., axions) can be thermalized by gravitational scattering, such interactions are considerably less efficient once quantum effects are taken into account on scales below the Compton wavelength. However the energy transfer rate in models with several extra dimensions may still be sensitive to trans-Planckian physics.
