The absence of global anomalies of CP symmetry

Some solutions to the strong CP problem assume that CP symmetry is a gauge symmetry, which is then spontaneously broken. For this scenario to be possible, the CP symmetry should not have any nonperturbative (global) anomalies. In this paper, we study anomalies of CP symmetry of fermions which are coupled to gravity and gauge fields with a gauge group $G$. When $G$ is connected and simply connected, we show that gauging a CP symmetry does not produce any new anomaly beyond the one before gauging it. In particular, the standard model matter content does not have anomalies.

Anomaly inflow and $p$-form gauge theories

Chiral and non-chiral $p$-form gauge fields have gravitational anomalies and anomalies of Green-Schwarz type. This means that they are most naturally realized as the boundary modes of bulk topological phases in one higher dimensions. We give a systematic description of the total bulk-boundary system which is analogous to the realization of a chiral fermion on the boundary of a massive fermion. The anomaly of the boundary theory is given by the partition function of the bulk theory, which we explicitly compute in terms of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer $η$-invariant. We use our formalism to determine the $\mathrm{SL}(2,{\mathbb Z})$ anomaly of the 4d Maxwell theory. We also apply it to study the worldvolume theories of a single D-brane and an M5-brane in the presence of orientifolds, orbifolds, and S-folds in string, M, and F theories. In an appendix we also describe a simple class of non-unitary invertible topological theories whose partition function is not a bordism invariant, illustrating the necessity of the unitarity condition in the cobordism classification of the invertible phases.

On invariants of two-dimensional minimally supersymmetric field theories

We construct a new invariant of two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,1)$ supersymmetric quantum field theories (SQFTs), under a couple of assumptions on the general properties of such SQFTs motivated by considerations in heterotic string theory. This new invariant is in addition to the known 'primary' invariants, i.e. the ordinary elliptic genus and the mod-2 elliptic genus, and the known 'secondary' invariant, which can be considered as an SQFT analog of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer $η$-invariant when its continuous variation vanishes. We also define a spectral invariant of supercharge more generally by the integration of the expectation value of the supercharge over the fundamental region of $\mathrm{ SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. With this spectral invariant, we construct a spectral pairing which can be used to systematically detect all the known invariants, including the new one we introduce in the first half of this paper.

Large $θ$ angle in two-dimensional large $N$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model

In confining large $N$ theories with a $θ$ angle such as four-dimensional $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theory, there are multiple metastable vacua and it makes sense to consider the parameter region of ``large $θ$ of order $N$'' despite the fact that $θ$ is a $2π$-periodic parameter. We investigate this parameter region in the two-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model by computing the partition function on $T^2$. When $θ/N$ is of order $ \mathcal{O}(0.1) $ or less, we get perfectly sensible results for the vacuum energies and decay rates of metastable vacua. However, when $θ/N$ is of order $\mathcal{O}(1) $, we encounter a problem about saddle points that would give larger contributions to the partition function than the true vacuum. We discuss why it might not be straightforward to resolve this problem.

Black $p$-Branes in Heterotic String Theory

Heterotic string theory has nonsupersymmetric branes whose existence is suggested by the cobordism conjecture. We numerically construct static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat black brane solutions in ten-dimensional heterotic superstring theories for 0- and 4-branes. These branes carry charges that are measured by Chern classes on the sphere surrounding the branes. For the extremal case, the solutions have a throat region with a linear dilaton profile as expected from the corresponding world-sheet theory. We also construct non-extremal solutions by compactifying the time direction. To verify the reliability of our numerical calculations, we confirm that they reproduce the known analytical solutions for the 6-brane. Our black brane solutions provide evidence supporting the existence of such branes in heterotic string theory.

Remarks on mod-2 elliptic genus

For physicists: For supersymmetric quantum mechanics, there are cases when a mod-2 Witten index can be defined, even when a more ordinary $\mathbb{Z}$-valued Witten index vanishes. Similarly, for 2d supersymmetric quantum field theories, there are cases when a mod-2 elliptic genus can be defined, even when a more ordinary elliptic genus vanishes. We study such mod-2 elliptic genera in the context of $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ supersymmetry, and show that they are characterized by mod-2 reductions of integral modular forms, under some assumptions. For mathematicians: We study the image of the standard homomorphism $π_n \mathrm{TMF}\to π_n \mathrm{KO}((q))\simeq \mathbb{Z}/2((q))$ for $n=8k+1$ or $8k+2$, by relating them to the mod-2 reductions of integral modular forms.

On non-supersymmetric heterotic branes

A uniform construction of non-supersymmetric 0-, 4-, 6- and 7-branes in heterotic string theory was announced and outlined in our letter \cite{Kaidi:2023tqo}. In this full paper, we provide details on their properties. Among other things, we discuss the charges carried by the branes, their topological and dynamical stability, the exact worldsheet descriptions of their near-horizon regions, and the relationship of the branes to the mathematical notion of topological modular forms.

Dualities among Neveu-Schwarz sector branes in string theory

We conjecture dualities among branes that consist of Neveu-Schwarz sector fields, such as NS5-branes. Two branes are dual after compactifications on spheres with gauge fluxes. The conjecture follows from simple considerations on string worldsheet theories. For some NS5-branes, we get level-rank dualities of Chern-Simons theories. Application of the dualities to a newly found brane in heterotic string theory reveals surprising properties of the worldvolume theory on it, for which we give evidence from anomaly inflow.

Constraints on the topology of Type IIB string theory

We discuss some topological constraints on Type IIB string theory that cannot be described by elementary characteristic classes. Anomaly cancellation of the worldvolume theory of a D3-brane requires a shifted Dirac quantization condition of the Ramond-Ramond 5-form flux. However, the required shift is sometimes inconsistent depending on the topology of spacetime backgrounds. The obstruction to the existence of a shifted quantization is described by a degree-6 cohomology class whose definition involves spin structure of spacetime manifolds. The cohomology class is interpreted as a background D3-charge, and the Gauss law constraint requires inclusion of additional D3-branes to cancel it.

Differential models for the Anderson dual to bordism theories and invertible QFT's, I

In this paper, we construct new models for the Anderson duals $(IΩ^G)^*$ to the stable tangential $G$-bordism theories and their differential extensions. The cohomology theory $(IΩ^G)^*$ is conjectured by Freed and Hopkins [FH21] to classify deformation classes of possibly non-topological invertible quantum field theories (QFT's). Our model is made by abstractizing certain properties of invertible QFT's, thus supporting their conjecture.

Dark baryon from pure Yang-Mills theory and its GW signature from cosmic strings

We point out that SO($2N$) pure Yang-Mills theory provides a candidate for dark matter (DM) without the explicit need to impose any additional symmetry. The DM candidate is a particular type of glueball, which we refer to as a baryonic glueball, that is naturally stable and produced by a novel production mechanism for a moderately large $N$. In this case, the intercommutation probability of cosmic strings (or macroscopic color flux tubes) is quite low, which offers characteristic gravitational wave signals to test our model. In particular, our model can simultaneously account for both abundance of DM and the recently reported gravitational wave signals detected in pulsar timing array experiments, including NANOGrav.

The QCD phase diagram in the space of imaginary chemical potential via 't Hooft anomalies

The QCD phase diagram in the space of temperature and imaginary baryon chemical potential has been an interesting subject in numerical lattice QCD simulations because of the absence of the sign problem and its deep structure related to confinement/deconfinement. We study constraints on the phase diagram by using an 't Hooft anomaly. The relevant anomaly is an anomaly in the space of imaginary chemical potential. We compute it in the UV, and discuss how it is matched by the pion effective field theory at low temperatures. Then we study implications of the anomaly to the phase diagram. There must be a line of phase transition studied in the past by Roberge and Weiss such that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop is not smooth when we cross the line. Moreover, if the greatest common divisor of the color and flavor numbers is greater than one, the phase transition across the Roberge-Weiss line must be either a first order phase transition, or a second order phase transition described by a nontrivial interacting three-dimensional CFT.

Non-supersymmetric heterotic branes

The common statement that any consistent quantum gravity theory contains dynamical objects with all possible charges suggests that there are still a number of hitherto-unidentified branes in string theory. Here we give the exact worldsheet description of near-horizon limits of non-supersymmetric $p$-branes in ten-dimensional $\mathrm{Spin}(32)/\mathbb{Z}_2$ or $(E_8 \times E_8) \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic superstring theories for $p=7,6,4,0$.

Cosmic F- and D-strings from pure Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the formation of cosmic strings or macroscopic color flux tubes after the deconfinement/confinement phase transition in the pure Yang-Mills theory. Based on holographic dual descriptions, these cosmic strings can be interpreted as fundamental (F-) strings or wrapped D-branes (which we call as D-strings) in the gravity side, depending on the structure of the gauge group. In fact, the reconnection probabilities of the F- and D-strings are suppressed by factors of $1/N^2$ and $e^{-c N}$, where $c = \mathcal{O}(1)$, in a large-$N$ limit, respectively. Supported by the picture of electric-magnetic duality, we discuss that color flux tubes form after the deconfinement/confinement phase transition, just like the formation of local cosmic strings after spontaneous symmetry breaking in the weak-U(1) gauge theory. We use an extended velocity-dependent one-scale model to describe the dynamics of the string network and calculate the gravitational wave signals from string loops. We also discuss the dependence on the size of produced string loops.

Cosmic strings from pure Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the formation of cosmic strings or macroscopic color flux tubes at the phase transition from the deconfinement to confinement phase in pure Yang-Mills (YM) theory, such as SU($N$), Sp($N$), SO($N$), and Spin($N$), based on the current understanding of theoretical physics. According to the holographic dual descriptions, the cosmic strings are dual to fundamental strings or wrapped D-branes in the gravity side depending on the structure of the gauge group, and the reconnection probability is suppressed by $\mathcal{O}(N^{-2})$ and $e^{-\mathcal{O}(N)}$, respectively. The pure YM theory thus provides a simple realization of cosmic F- and D-strings without the need for a brane-inflationary scenario or extra dimension. We also review the stability of cosmic strings based on the concept of 1-form symmetry, which further implies the existence of a baryon vertex in some YM theory. We calculate the gravitational wave spectrum that is emitted from the cosmic strings based on an extended velocity-dependent one-scale model and discuss its detectability based on ongoing and planned gravitational-wave experiments. In particular, the SKA and LISA can observe gravitational signals if the confinement scale is higher than $\mathcal{O}(10^{12})\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and $\mathcal{O}(10^{10})\,\mathrm{GeV}$ for SU($N$) with $N = \mathcal{O}(1)$, respectively.

Heterotic global anomalies and torsion Witten index

We study the structure of anomalies in general heterotic string theories by considering general 2-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ supersymmetric quantum field theories (SQFTs), without assuming conformal invariance nor the correct central charges. First we generalize the precise notion of the $B$-field introduced by Witten. Then we express the target space anomalies by invariants of SQFTs. Perturbative anomalies correspond to the Witten index of some class of SQFTs, while global anomalies correspond to a torsion version of the Witten index. The torsion index gives some of the invariants of SQFTs suggested by topological modular forms, and is expected to be zero for the cases that are relevant to actual heterotic string theories.

Global anomalies in 8d supergravity

We study gauge and gravitational anomalies of fermions and 2-form fields on eight-dimensional spin manifolds. Possible global gauge anomalies are classified by spin bordism groups $Ω^{\text{spin}}_9(BG)$ which we determine by spectral sequence techniques, and we also identify their explicit generator manifolds. It turns out that a fermion in the adjoint representation of any simple Lie group, and a gravitino in $8d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity theory, have anomalies. We discuss how a 2-form field, which also appears in supergravity, produces anomalies which cancel against these fermion anomalies in a certain class of supergravity theories. In another class of theories, the anomaly of the gravitino is not cancelled by the 2-form field, but by topological degrees of freedom. It gives a restriction on the topology of spacetime manifolds which is not visible at the level of differential-form analysis.

Topological violation of global symmetries in quantum gravity

We discuss a topological reason why global symmetries are not conserved in quantum gravity, at least when the symmetry comes from compactification of a higher form symmetry. The mechanism is purely topological and does not require any explicit breaking term in the UV Lagrangian. Local current conservation does not imply global charge conservation in a sum over geometries in the path integral. We explicitly consider the shift symmetry of an axion-like field which originates from the compactification of a $p$-form gauge field. Our topological construction is motivated by the brane/black-brane correspondence, brane instantons, and an idea that virtual black branes of a simple kind may be realized by surgery on spacetime manifolds.
