Magnetocaloric effect measurements in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 120 T

We report proof-of-concept measurements of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 120 T for the classical spin-ice compound Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Radio-frequency resistivity measurements using an Au$_{16}$Ge$_{84}$ thin-film thermometer enable us to detect a rapid change in the sample temperature associated with a crystal-field level crossing in the high-field region in addition to a giant MCE at low fields. We discuss a possible delay in the temperature response and outline prospects for more precise MCE measurements in destructive pulsed fields.

Crystal-field magnetostriction of the spin ice under ultrahigh magnetic fields

We present a comprehensive study of the magnetoelastic properties of the Ising pyrochlore oxide Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$, known as spin ice, by means of high-field magnetostriction measurements and numerical calculations. When a magnetic field is applied along the crystallographic <111> axis, the longitudinal magnetostriction exhibits a broad maximum in the low-field regime around 30 T, followed by a dramatic lattice contraction due to crystal-field (CF) level crossing at $B_{\rm cf} \sim 65$ T. The transverse magnetostriction exhibits a contrasting behavior, highlighting the anisotropic nature of the CF striction. We identify distinct timescales of spin dynamics and CF-phonon dynamics by applying a magnetic field with different field-sweep rates. Our mean-field calculations, based on a point-charge model, successfully reproduce the overall magnetostriction behavior, revealing the competition between the exchange striction and CF striction. A signature of the CF level crossing is also observed through adiabatic magnetocaloric-effect measurements, consistent with our magnetostriction data.

Anisotropic Optical Conductivity Accompanied by a Small Energy Gap in One-Dimensional Thermoelectric Telluride Ta4SiTe4

We investigated the optical properties of single crystals of one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, which shows high thermoelectric performance below room temperature. Optical conductivity estimated from reflectivity spectra indicates the presence of a small energy gap of 0.1-0.15 eV at the Fermi energy. At the lowest energy, optical conductivity along the Ta4SiTe4 chain is an order of magnitude higher than that perpendicular to this direction, reflecting the anisotropic electron conduction in Ta4SiTe4. These results indicate that coexistence of a very small band gap and anisotropic electron conduction is a promising strategy to develop a high-performance thermoelectric material for low temperature applications.

Cluster Toroidal Multipoles Formed by Electric-Quadrupole and Magnetic-Octupole Trimers: A Possible Scenario for Hidden Orders in Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$

Cluster multipole orderings composed of atomic high-rank multipole moments are theoretically investigated with a 5$d$-electron compound Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ in mind. Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ exhibits two hidden orders: One is an intermediate-temperature phase with time-reversal symmetry and the other is a low-temperature phase without time-reversal symmetry. By performing the symmetry and augmented multipole analyses for a $d$-orbital model under the hexagonal point group $D_{\rm 3h}$, we find that the 120$^{\circ}$-type ordering of the electric quadrupole corresponds to cluster electric toroidal dipole ordering with the electric ferroaxial moment, which can become the microscopic origin of the intermediate-temperature phase in Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$. Furthermore, based on ${}^{193}$Ir synchrotron-radiation-based Mössbauer spectroscopy, we propose that the low-temperature phase in Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ is regarded as a coexisting state with cluster electric toroidal dipole and cluster magnetic toroidal quadrupole, the latter of which is formed by the 120$^{\circ}$-type ordering of the magnetic octupole and accompanies a small uniform magnetization as a secondary effect. Our results provide a clue to two hidden phases in Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$.

Universal dynamics of magnetic monopoles in two-dimensional kagomé ice

A magnetic monopole in spin ice is a novel quasiparticle excitation in condensed matter physics, and we found that the ac frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility $χ(ω)$ in the two-dimensional (2D) spin ice (so-called kagomé ice) of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows a single scaling form. This behavior can be understood in terms of the dynamical scaling law for 2D Coulomb gas (CG) systems [Phys. Rev. B 90, 144428 (2014)], characterized by the charge correlation length $ξ(\propto1/\sqrt{ω_1})$, where $ω_{1}$ is a characteristic frequency proportional to the peak position of the imaginary part of $χ(ω)$. It is a generic behavior among a wide variety of models such as the vortex dynamics of 2D superconductors, 2D superfluids, classical XY magnets, and dynamics of melting of Wigner crystals.

Ab initio Derivation of Low-Energy Hamiltonians for Systems with Strong Spin-Orbit Interaction and Its Application to Ca5Ir3O12

We present an ab initio derivation method for effective low-energy Hamiltonians of material with strong spin-orbit interactions. The effective Hamiltonian is described in terms of the Wannier function in the spinor form, and effective interactions are derived with the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method. Based on this formalism and the developed code, we derive an effective Hamiltonian of a strong spin-orbit interaction material Ca5Ir3O12. This system consists of three edge-shared IrO6 octahedral chains arranged along the c axis, and the three Ir atoms in the ab plane compose a triangular lattice. For such a complicated structure, we need to set up the Wannier spinor function under the local coordinate system. We found that a density-functional band structure near the Fermi level is formed by local dxy and dyz orbitals. Then, we constructed the ab initio dxy/dyz model. The estimated nearest neighbor transfer t is close to 0.2 eV, and the cRPA onsite U and neighboring V electronic interactions are found to be 2.4-2.5 eV and 1 eV, respectively. The resulting characteristic correlation strength defined by (U-V)/t is above 7, and thus this material is classified as a strongly correlated electron system. The onsite transfer integral involved in the spin-orbit interaction is 0.2 eV, which is comparable to the onsite exchange integrals near 0.2 eV, indicating that the spin-orbit-interaction physics would compete with the Hund physics. Based on these calculated results, we discuss possible rich ground-state low-energy electronic structures of spin, charge and orbitals with competing Hund, spin-orbit and strong correlation physics.

Effects of uniaxial pressure on the spin ice Ho2Ti2O7

The spin ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 are experimental and theoretical exemplars of highly frustrated magnetic materials. However, the effects of an applied uniaxial pressure are not well studied, and here we report magnetization measurements of Ho2Ti2O7 under uniaxial pressure applied in the [001], [111] and [110] crystalline directions. The basic features are captured by an extension of the dipolar spin ice model. We find a good match between our model and measurements with pressures applied along two of the three directions, and extend the framework to discuss the influence of crystal misalignment for the third direction. The parameters determined from the magnetization measurements reproduce neutron scattering measurements we perform under uniaxial pressure applied along the [110] crystalline direction. In the detailed analysis we include the recently verified susceptibility dependence of the demagnetizing factor. Our work demonstrates the application of a moderate applied pressure to modify the magnetic interaction parameters. The knowledge can be used to predict critical pressures needed to induce new phases and transitions in frustrated materials, and in the case of Ho2Ti2O7 we expect a transition to a ferromagnetic ground state for uniaxial pressures above 3.3 GPa.

Magnetic order in pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ probed by muon spin relaxation

Muon-spin relaxation results on the pyrochlore iridate Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are reported. Spontaneous coherent muon-spin precession below the metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature of about 33 K is observed, indicating the appearance of a long-ranged magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments. With further decrease in temperature, the internal field at the muon site increases again below about 9 K. The second increase of internal field suggests the ordering of Nd$^{3+}$ moments, which is consistent with a previous neutron experiment. Our results suggest that the MIT and magnetic ordering of Ir$^{4+}$ moments have a close relationship and that the large spin-orbit coupling of Ir 5\textit{d} electrons plays a key role for both MIT and the mechanism of the magnetic ordering in pyrochlore iridates in the insulting ground state.

Giant Magnetoresistance Effect in the Metal-Insulator Transition of Pyrochlore Oxide Nd2Ir2O7

We investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the pyrochlore oxide Nd2Ir2O7, which shows a metal-insulator transition at T_MI =33 K. A small positive MR effect was observed in the metallic state above T_MI, while a large negative MR effect was observed in the insulating state below T_MI . MR effects exceeding 3000% were found at 1 K at a field of 9 T. As a result, we confirmed the crossover from the insulating state to a state with a small or partial band gap in a field up to 56 T. Furthermore, from the MR effect in Eu2Ir2O7 (T_MI = 120 K) and Gd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (T_MI = 127 K), we revealed that the large negative MR effect of the pyrochlore iridate Ln2Ir2O7 depends on the magnetism of the lanthanide Ln^{3+} ion. The d-f interaction plays a significant role in the large negative MR effect in the insulating state.

Quantum spin fluctuations in the spin liquid state of Tb2Ti2O7

Neutron scattering experiments on a polycrystalline sample of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7, which does not show any magnetic order down to 50 mK, have revealed that it shows condensation behavior below 0.4 K from a thermally fluctuating paramagnetic state to a spin-liquid ground-state with quantum spin fluctuations. Energy spectra change from quasielastic scattering to a continuum with a double-peak structure at energies of 0 and 0.8 K in the spin-liquid state. Specific heat shows an anomaly at the crossover temperature.

A Magnetic Transition Probed by the Ce Ion in Square-Lattice Antiferromagnet CeMnAsO

We examined the magnetic properties of the square-lattice antiferromagnets CeMnAsO and LaMnAsO and their solid solutions La1-xCexMnAsO by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements below room temperature. A first-order phase transition is observed at 34.1 K, below which the ground-state doublet of the Ce ion splits by 3.53 meV. It is likely that Mn moments already ordered above room temperature are reoriented at the transition, as reported for related compounds, such as NdMnAsO and PrMnSbO. This transition generates a large internal magnetic field at the Ce site in spite of the fact that simple Heisenberg interactions should be cancelled out at the Ce site owing to geometrical frustration. The transition takes place at nearly the same temperature with the substitution of La for Ce up to 90%. The Ce moment does not undergo long-range order by itself, but is parasitically induced at the transition, serving as a good probe for detecting the magnetism of Mn spins in a square lattice.

Observation of Magnetic Monopoles in Spin Ice

Excitations from a strongly frustrated system, the kagome ice state of the spin ice Dy2Ti2O7 under magnetic fields along a [111] direction, have been studied. They are theoretically proposed to be regarded as magnetic monopoles. Neutron scattering measurements of spin correlations show that close to the critical point the monopoles are fluctuating between high- and low-density states, supporting that the magnetic Coulomb force acts between them. Specific heat measurements show that monopole-pair creation obeys an Arrhenius law, indicating that the density of monopoles can be controlled by temperature and magnetic field.

Ferromagnetic Ising Spin Chains Emerging from the Spin Ice under Magnetic Field

A spin-ice compound dysprosium titanate, Dy2Ti2O7, is studied by specific heat measurements in magnetic fields applied along the [110] direction of the cubic unit cell. Above a magnetic field of 0.4 T a relatively sharp peak at T = 1.1 K in the specific heat appears from a broad peak associated with spin-ice freezing at low fields. This new peak is almost independent of field up to 1.5 T, while another broad, field-dependent peak is detected at higher temperature. Under magnetic field along [110] Ising spins on the pyrochlore lattice can be considered to form two orthogonal sets of chains; parallel and perpendicular to the field direction. It is suggested that these perpendicular chains behave as unique ferromagnetic Ising spin chains without long-range order.

A new macroscopically degenerate ground state in the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 under a magnetic field

The low temperature magnetic properties of pyrochlore compound Dy2Ti2O7 in magnetic fields applied along the [111] direction are reported. Below 1 K, a clear plateau has been observed in the magnetization process in the field range 2~9 kOe, followed by a sharp moment jump at around 10 kOe that corresponds to a breaking of the spin ice state. We found that the plateau state is disordered with the residual entropy of nearly half the value of the zero-field state, whose macroscopic degeneracy comes from a frustration of the spins on the kagome layers perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Neutron scattering study of dipolar spin ice Ho_2Sn_2O_7: Frustrated pyrochlore magnet

By means of neutron scattering techniques we have investigated the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Ho_2Sn_2O_7, which was found to show a ferromagnetic spin-ice behavior below T \simeq 1.4 K by susceptibility measurements. High-resolution powder-neutron-diffraction shows no detectable disorder of the lattice, which implies appearance of a random magnetic state solely by frustrated geometry, i.e., the corner sharing tetrahedra. Magnetic inelastic-scattering spectra show that Ho magnetic moments behave as an Ising spin system at low temperatures, and that the spin fluctuation has static character. The system remains in a short-range ordered state down to T = 0.4 K. By analyzing the wave-number dependence of the magnetic scattering using a mean field theory, it is clarified that the Ising spins interact via the dipolar interaction. Therefore we conclude that Ho_2Sn_2O_7 belongs to the dipolar-spin-ice family. Slow spin dynamics is exhibited as thermal hysteresis and time dependence of the magnetic scattering.
