Nonlinear localized excitations in a topological ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice

We theoretically investigate nonlinear localized excitations in a Heisenberg honeycomb ferromagnet with a second neighbour Dzialozinskii-Moriya interaction, which has been proved to possess the topological band structure. Using the time-dependent variational principle, we obtain the equation of motion for the system in the Glauber coherent-state representation. By means of the semidiscrete multiple-scale method, different types of nonlinear localized excitations are gotten. Our results show that both two-dimensional discrete breathers and bulk gap solitons may occur in the Heisenberg honeycomb ferromagnet.

Open-set Recognition based on the Combination of Deep Learning and Ensemble Method for Detecting Unknown Traffic Scenarios

An understanding and classification of driving scenarios are important for testing and development of autonomous driving functionalities. Machine learning models are useful for scenario classification but most of them assume that data received during the testing are from one of the classes used in the training. This assumption is not true always because of the open environment where vehicles operate. This is addressed by a new machine learning paradigm called open-set recognition. Open-set recognition is the problem of assigning test samples to one of the classes used in training or to an unknown class. This work proposes a combination of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Random Forest (RF) for open set recognition of traffic scenarios. CNNs are used for the feature generation and the RF algorithm along with extreme value theory for the detection of known and unknown classes. The proposed solution is featured by exploring the vote patterns of trees in RF instead of just majority voting. By inheriting the ensemble nature of RF, the vote pattern of all trees combined with extreme value theory is shown to be well suited for detecting unknown classes. The proposed method has been tested on the highD and OpenTraffic datasets and has demonstrated superior performance in various aspects compared to existing solutions.

Partition-Mallows Model and Its Inference for Rank Aggregation

Learning how to aggregate ranking lists has been an active research area for many years and its advances have played a vital role in many applications ranging from bioinformatics to internet commerce. The problem of discerning reliability of rankers based only on the rank data is of great interest to many practitioners, but has received less attention from researchers. By dividing the ranked entities into two disjoint groups, i.e., relevant and irrelevant/background ones, and incorporating the Mallows model for the relative ranking of relevant entities, we propose a framework for rank aggregation that can not only distinguish quality differences among the rankers but also provide the detailed ranking information for relevant entities. Theoretical properties of the proposed approach are established, and its advantages over existing approaches are demonstrated via simulation studies and real-data applications. Extensions of the proposed method to handle partial ranking lists and conduct covariate-assisted rank aggregation are also discussed.

Multiple Symmetry-Protected Dirac Nodal Lines in A Quasi-One-Dimensional Semimetal

Nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) contains Dirac/Weyl type band-crossing nodes extending into shapes of line, loop and chain in the reciprocal space, leading to novel band topology and transport responses. Robust NLSMs against spin-orbit coupling typically occur in three-dimensional materials with more symmetry operations to protect the line nodes of band crossing, while the possibilities in lower-dimensional materials are rarely discussed. Here we demonstrate robust NLSM phase in a quasi-one-dimensional nonmagnetic semimetal TaNiTe5. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we reveal how reduced dimension can interact with nonsymmorphic symmetry and result into multiple Dirac-type nodal lines with four-fold degeneracy. Our findings suggest rich physics and application in (quasi-)one-dimensional topological materials and call for further investigation on the interplay between the quantum confinement and nontrivial band topology.

Type-III Weyl Semimetals: (TaSe4)2I

Weyl semimetals have been classified into type-I and type-II with respect to the geometry of their Fermi surfaces at the Weyl points. Here, we propose a new class of Weyl semimetal, whose unique Fermi surface contains two electron or two hole pockets touching at a multi-Weyl point, dubbed as type-III Weyl semimetal. Based on first-principles calculations, we first show that quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)2I is a type-III Weyl semimetal with larger chiral charges. (TaSe4)2I can support four-fold helicoidal surface states with remarkably long Fermi arcs on the (001) surface. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements are in agreement with the gapless nature of (TaSe4)2I at room temperature and reveal its characteristic dispersion. In addition, our calculations show that external strain could induce topological phase transitions in (TaSe4)2I among the type-III, type-II, and type-I Weyl semimetals, accompanied with the Lifshitz transitions of the Fermi surfaces. Therefore, our work first experimentally indicates (TaSe4)2I as a type-III Weyl semimetal and provides a promising platform to further investigate the novel physics of type-III Weyl fermions.

Stratification and Optimal Resampling for Sequential Monte Carlo

Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), also known as particle filters, has been widely accepted as a powerful computational tool for making inference with dynamical systems. A key step in SMC is resampling, which plays the role of steering the algorithm towards the future dynamics. Several strategies have been proposed and used in practice, including multinomial resampling, residual resampling (Liu and Chen 1998), optimal resampling (Fearnhead and Clifford 2003), stratified resampling (Kitagawa 1996), and optimal transport resampling (Reich 2013). We show that, in the one dimensional case, optimal transport resampling is equivalent to stratified resampling on the sorted particles, and they both minimize the resampling variance as well as the expected squared energy distance between the original and resampled empirical distributions; in the multidimensional case, the variance of stratified resampling after sorting particles using Hilbert curve (Gerber et al. 2019) in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is $O(m^{-(1+2/d)})$, an improved rate compared to the original $O(m^{-(1+1/d)})$, where $m$ is the number of resampled particles. This improved rate is the lowest for ordered stratified resampling schemes, as conjectured in Gerber et al. (2019). We also present an almost sure bound on the Wasserstein distance between the original and Hilbert-curve-resampled empirical distributions. In light of these theoretical results, we propose the stratified multiple-descendant growth (SMG) algorithm, which allows us to explore the sample space more efficiently compared to the standard i.i.d. multiple-descendant sampling-resampling approach as measured by the Wasserstein metric. Numerical evidence is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Underwater Acoustic Multiplexing Communication by Pentamode Metasurface

As the dominant information carrier in water, acoustic wave is widely used for underwater detection, communication and imaging. Even though underwater acoustic communication has been greatly improved in the past decades, it still suffers from the slow transmission speed and low information capacity. The recently developed acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing communication promises a high efficiency, large capacity and fast transmission speed for acoustic communication. However, the current works on OAM multiplexing communication mainly appears in airborne acoustics. The application of acoustic OAM for underwater communication remains to be further explored and studied. In this paper, an impedance matching pentamode demultiplexing metasurface is designed to realize multiplexing and demultiplexing in underwater acoustic communication. The impedance matching of the metasurface ensures high transmission of the transmitted information. The information encoded into two different OAM beams as two independent channels is numerically demonstrated by realizing real-time picture transfer. The simulation shows the effectiveness of the system for underwater acoustic multiplexing communication. This work paves the way for experimental demonstration and practical application of OAM multiplexing for underwater acoustic communication

A Knowledge Graph based Approach for Mobile Application Recommendation

With the rapid prevalence of mobile devices and the dramatic proliferation of mobile applications (apps), app recommendation becomes an emergent task that would benefit both app users and stockholders. How to effectively organize and make full use of rich side information of users and apps is a key challenge to address the sparsity issue for traditional approaches. To meet this challenge, we proposed a novel end-to-end Knowledge Graph Convolutional Embedding Propagation Model (KGEP) for app recommendation. Specifically, we first designed a knowledge graph construction method to model the user and app side information, then adopted KG embedding techniques to capture the factual triplet-focused semantics of the side information related to the first-order structure of the KG, and finally proposed a relation-weighted convolutional embedding propagation model to capture the recommendation-focused semantics related to high-order structure of the KG. Extensive experiments conducted on a real-world dataset validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to the state-of-the-art recommendation approaches.

Half-Magnetic Topological Insulator

Topological magnets are a new family of quantum materials providing great potential to realize emergent phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion-insulator state. Here we present our discovery that stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 with natural heterostructure MnBi2Te4-(Bi2Te3)3 is an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator, with the magnetization existing at the MnBi2Te4 surface but not at the opposite surface terminated by triple Bi2Te3 layers. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements unveil a massive Dirac gap at the MnBi2Te4 surface, and gapless Dirac cone on the other side. Remarkably, the Dirac gap (~28 meV) at MnBi2Te4 surface decreases monotonically with increasing temperature and closes right at the Curie temperature, thereby representing the first smoking-gun spectroscopic evidence of magnetization-induced topological surface gap among all known magnetic topological materials. We further demonstrate theoretically that the half-magnetic topological insulator is desirable to realize the half-quantized surface anomalous Hall effect, which serves as a direct proof of the general concept of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.

Multi-level Training and Bayesian Optimization for Economical Hyperparameter Optimization

Hyperparameters play a critical role in the performances of many machine learning methods. Determining their best settings or Hyperparameter Optimization (HPO) faces difficulties presented by the large number of hyperparameters as well as the excessive training time. In this paper, we develop an effective approach to reducing the total amount of required training time for HPO. In the initialization, the nested Latin hypercube design is used to select hyperparameter configurations for two types of training, which are, respectively, heavy training and light training. We propose a truncated additive Gaussian process model to calibrate approximate performance measurements generated by light training, using accurate performance measurements generated by heavy training. Based on the model, a sequential model-based algorithm is developed to generate the performance profile of the configuration space as well as find optimal ones. Our proposed approach demonstrates competitive performance when applied to optimize synthetic examples, support vector machines, fully connected networks and convolutional neural networks.

Spectroscopic realization of large surface gap in a doped magnetic topological insulator

Realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion electrodynamics in topological materials are among the paradigmatic phenomena in condensed matter physics. Recently, signatures of both phases are observed to exist in thin films of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, a stoichiometric antiferromagnetic topological insulator. Direct evidence of the bulk topological magnetoelectric response in an axion insulator requires an energy gap at its topological surface state (TSS). However, independent spectroscopic experiments revealed that such a surface gap is absent, or much smaller than previously thought, in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, we utilize angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to demonstrate that a sizable TSS gap unexpectedly exists in Sb-doped MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. This gap is found to be topologically nontrivial, insensitive to the bulk antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition, while enlarges along with increasing Sb concentration. Our work shows that Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$ is a potential platform to observe the key features of the high-temperature axion insulator state, such as the topological magnetoelectric responses and half-integer quantum Hall effects.

Hybridization-Induced Gapped and Gapless States on the Surfaces of Magnetic Topological Insulators

The layered MnBi2nTe3n+1 family represents the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM TI, protected by a combination symmetry ) ever discovered, providing an ideal platform to explore novel physics such as quantum anomalous Hall effect at elevated temperature and axion electrodynamics. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on this family have revealed that all terminations exhibit (nearly) gapless topological surface states (TSSs) within the AFM state, violating the definition of the AFM TI, as the surfaces being studied should be -breaking and opening a gap. Here we explain this curious paradox using a surface-bulk band hybridization picture. Combining ARPES and first-principles calculations, we prove that only an apparent gap is opened by hybridization between TSSs and bulk bands. The observed (nearly) gapless features are consistently reproduced by tight-binding simulations where TSSs are coupled to a Rashba-split bulk band. The Dirac-cone-like spectral features are actually of bulk origin, thus not sensitive to the-breaking at the AFM surfaces. This picture explains the (nearly) gapless behaviour found in both Bi2Te3- and MnBi2Te4-terminated surfaces and is applicable to all terminations of MnBi2nTe3n+1 family. Our findings highlight the role of band hybridization, superior to magnetism in this case, in shaping the general surface band structure in magnetic topological materials for the first time.

NGEMM: Optimizing GEMM for Deep Learning via Compiler-based Techniques

Quantization has emerged to be an effective way to significantly boost the performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) by utilizing low-bit computations. Despite having lower numerical precision, quantized DNNs are able to reduce both memory bandwidth and computation cycles with little losses of accuracy. Integer GEMM (General Matrix Multiplication) is critical to running quantized DNN models efficiently, as GEMM operations often dominate the computations in these models. Various approaches have been developed by leveraging techniques such as vectorization and memory layout to improve the performance of integer GEMM. However, these existing approaches are not fast enough in certain scenarios. We developed NGEMM, a compiler-based GEMM implementation for accelerating lower-precision training and inference. NGEMM has better use of the vector units by avoiding unnecessary vector computation that is introduced during tree reduction. We compared NGEMM's performance with the state-of-art BLAS libraries such as MKL. Our experimental results showed that NGEMM outperformed MKL non-pack and pack version by an average of 1.86x and 1.16x, respectively. We have applied NGEMM to a number of production services in Microsoft.

In-plane antiferromagnetic moments in axion topological insulator candidate EuIn$_2$As$_2$

Topological insulator with antiferromagnetic order can serve as an ideal platform for the realization of axion electrodynamics. In this paper, we report a systematic study of the axion topological insulator candidate EuIn$_2$As$_2$. A linear energy dispersion across the Fermi level confirms the existence of the proposed hole-type Fermi pocket. Spin-flop transitions occur with magnetic fields applied within the $ab$-plane while are absent for fields parallel to the $c$-axis. Anisotropic magnetic phase diagrams are observed and the orientation of the ground magnetic moment is found to be within the $ab$-plane. The magnetoresistivity for EuIn$_2$As$_2$ behaves non-monotonic as a function of field strength. It exhibits angular dependent evolving due to field-driven and temperature-driven magnetic states. These results indicate that the magnetic states of EuIn$_2$As$_2$ strongly affect the transport properties as well as the topological nature.

An Improved Historical Embedding without Alignment

Many words have evolved in meaning as a result of cultural and social change. Understanding such changes is crucial for modelling language and cultural evolution. Low-dimensional embedding methods have shown promise in detecting words' meaning change by encoding them into dense vectors. However, when exploring semantic change of words over time, these methods require the alignment of word embeddings across different time periods. This process is computationally expensive, prohibitively time consuming and suffering from contextual variability. In this paper, we propose a new and scalable method for encoding words from different time periods into one dense vector space. This can greatly improve performance when it comes to identifying words that have changed in meaning over time. We evaluated our method on dataset from Google Books N-gram. Our method outperformed three other popular methods in terms of the number of words correctly identified to have changed in meaning. Additionally, we provide an intuitive visualization of the semantic evolution of some words extracted by our method

Bound state and non-Markovian dynamics of a quantum emitter around a surface plasmonic nanostructure

A bound state between a quantum emitter (QE) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be formed, where the QE is partially stabilized in its excited state. We put forward a general approach for calculating the energy level shift at a negative frequency $ω$, which is just the negative of the nonresonant part for the energy level shift at positive frequency $-ω$. We also propose an efficient formalism for obtaining the long-time value of the excited-state population without calculating the eigenfrequency of the bound state or performing a time evolution of the system, in which the probability amplitude for the excited state in the steady limit is equal to one minus the integral of the evolution spectrum over the positive frequency range. With the above two quantities obtained, we show that the non-Markovian decay dynamics in the presence of a bound state can be obtained by the method based on the Green's function expression for the evolution operator. A general criterion for identifying the existence of a bound state is presented. These are numerically demonstrated for a QE located around a nanosphere and in a gap plasmonic nanocavity. These findings are instructive in the fields of coherent light-matter interactions.

Crossover from 2D metal to 3D Dirac semimetal in metallic PtTe2 films with local Rashba effect

PtTe2 and PtSe2 with trigonal structure have attracted extensive research interests since the discovery of type-II Dirac fermions in the bulk crystals. The evolution of the electronic structure from bulk 3D topological semimetal to 2D atomic thin films is an important scientific question. While a transition from 3D type-II Dirac semimetal in the bulk to 2D semiconductor in monolayer (ML) film has been reported for PtSe2, so far the evolution of electronic structure of atomically thin PtTe2 films still remains unexplored. Here we report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the electronic structure of high quality PtTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy with thickness from 2 ML to 6 ML. ARPES measurements show that PtTe2 films still remain metallic even down to 2 ML thickness, which is in sharp contrast to the semiconducting property of few layer PtSe2 film. Moreover, a transition from 2D metal to 3D type-II Dirac semimetal occurs at film thickness of 4-6 ML. In addition, Spin-ARPES measurements reveal helical spin textures induced by local Rashba effect in the bulk PtTe2 crystal, suggesting that similar hidden spin is also expected in few monolayer PtTe2 films. Our work reveals the transition from 2D metal to 3D topological semimetal and provides new opportunities for investigating metallic 2D films with local Rashba effect.

Raman sideband cooling of $^{25}$Mg$^+$ -$^{27}$Al$^+$ ions pair and observation of quantum logic spectra

We perform quantum logic spectroscopy (QLS) on $^{27}$Al$^+$ ion $^1$S$_0$ - $^3$P$_1$ transition, which is an important step toward the QLS based $^{27}$Al$^+$ ion optical clock. As a precondition of QLS, both the stretch (STR) mode and the common (COM) mode of the $^{27}$Al$^+$ and $^{25}$Mg$^+$ ions pair are cooled to the vibrational ground state by Raman sideband cooling. The mean phonon number is measured to be 0.10(1) for the STR mode and 0.01(1) for the COM mode, respectively. The heating rate is evaluated to be 13(3) phonons/s for the STR mode and 5.5(1) phonons/s for the COM mode.
