In situ tuning of dynamical Coulomb blockade on Andreev bound states in hybrid nanowire devices

Electron interactions in quantum devices can exhibit intriguing phenomena. One example is assembling an electronic device in series with an on-chip resistor. The quantum laws of electricity of the device is modified at low energies and temperatures by dissipative interactions induced by the resistor, a phenomenon known as dynamical Coulomb blockade (DCB). The DCB strength is usually non-adjustable in a fixed environment defined by the resistor. Here, we design an on-chip circuit for InAs-Al hybrid nanowires where the DCB strength can be gate-tuned in situ. InAs-Al nanowires could host Andreev or Majorana zero-energy states. This technique enables tracking the evolution of the same state while tuning the DCB strength from weak to strong. We observe the transition from a zero-bias conductance peak to split peaks for Andreev zero-energy states. Our technique opens the door to in situ tuning interaction strength on zero-energy states.

Differential current noise as an identifier of Andreev bound states that induce nearly quantized conductance plateaus

Quantized conductance plateaus, a celebrated hallmark of Majorana bound states (MBSs) predicted a decade ago, have recently been observed with small deviations in iron-based superconductors and hybrid nanowires. Here, we demonstrate that nearly quantized conductance plateaus can also arise from trivial Andreev bound states (ABSs). To avoid ABS interruptions, we propose identifying ABS-induced quantized conductance plateaus by measuring the associated differential current noise $P$ versus bias voltage $V$. Specifically, for a quantized conductance plateau induced by one or multiple low-energy ABSs, the associated $P(V)$ curve exhibits a double-peak around zero bias, with the peak positions at $e|V|\approx 3k_B T$ (where $T$ is the temperature) and peak values larger than $2e^3/h$. These features greatly contrast those of an MBS or quasi-MBS, whose $P(V)$ curve displays a broad zero-bias dip and is consistently below $2e^3/h$. This protocol can be practically implemented in a variety of MBS candidate platforms using an electrode or STM tip as a probe.

Ballistic PbTe Nanowire Devices

Disorder is the primary obstacle in current Majorana nanowire experiments. Reducing disorder or achieving ballistic transport is thus of paramount importance. In clean and ballistic nanowire devices, quantized conductance is expected with plateau quality serving as a benchmark for disorder assessment. Here, we introduce ballistic PbTe nanowire devices grown using the selective-area-growth (SAG) technique. Quantized conductance plateaus in units of $2e^2/h$ are observed at zero magnetic field. This observation represents an advancement in diminishing disorder within SAG nanowires, as none of the previously studied SAG nanowires (InSb or InAs) exhibit zero-field ballistic transport. Notably, the plateau values indicate that the ubiquitous valley degeneracy in PbTe is lifted in nanowire devices. This degeneracy lifting addresses an additional concern in the pursuit of Majorana realization. Moreover, these ballistic PbTe nanowires may enable the search for clean signatures of the spin-orbit helical gap in future devices.

Hard superconducting gap in PbTe nanowires

Semiconductor nanowires coupled to a superconductor provide a powerful testbed for quantum device physics such as Majorana zero modes and gate-tunable hybrid qubits. The performance of these quantum devices heavily relies on the quality of the induced superconducting gap. A hard gap, evident as vanishing subgap conductance in tunneling spectroscopy, is both necessary and desired. Previously, a hard gap has been achieved and extensively studied in III-V semiconductor nanowires (InAs and InSb). In this study, we present the observation of a hard superconducting gap in PbTe nanowires coupled to a superconductor Pb. The gap size ($Δ$) is $\sim$ 1 meV (maximally 1.3 meV in one device). Additionally, subgap Andreev bound states can also be created and controlled through gate tuning. Tuning a device into the open regime can reveal Andreev enhancement of the subgap conductance, suggesting a remarkable transparent superconductor-semiconductor interface, with a transparency of $\sim$ 0.96. These results pave the way for diverse superconducting quantum devices based on PbTe nanowires.

Intrinsic and tunable quantum anomalous Hall effect and magnetic topological phases in XYBi2Te5

By first-principles calculations, we study the magnetic and topological properties of XYBi2Te5-family (X, Y = Mn, Ni, V, Eu) compounds. The strongly coupled double magnetic atom-layers can significantly enhance the magnetic ordering temperature while keeping the topologically nontrivial properties. Particularly, NiVBi2Te5 is found to be a magnetic Weyl semimetal in bulk and a Chern insulator in thin film with both the Curie temperature (~150 K) and full gap well above 77 K. Ni2Bi2Te5, MnNiBi2Te5, NiVBi2Te5 and NiEuBi2Te5 exhibits intrinsic dynamic axion state. Among them, MnNiBi2Te5 has a Neel temperature over 200 K and Ni2Bi2Te5 even demonstrates antiferromagnetic order above room temperature. These results indicate an approach to realize high temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect and other topological quantum effects for practical applications.

Conductance Quantization in PbTe Nanowires

PbTe nanowires coupled to a superconductor have recently been proposed as a potential Majorana platform. The hallmark of the one-dimensional nature of ballistic nanowires is their quantized conductance. Here, we report the observation of conductance plateaus at multiples of the quantized value $2e^2/h$ in PbTe nanowires at finite magnetic fields. The quantized plateaus, as a function of source-drain bias and magnetic field, allow for the extraction of the Landé $g$-factor, sub-band spacing and effective mass. The coefficient of 2 in the plateau conductance indicates the presence of valley degeneracy arising from the crystal orientation of the nanowires, which are grown on a (001) substrate. Occasionally, this degeneracy can be lifted by a gate voltage that breaks the mirror symmetry. Our results demonstrate the one-dimensionality of PbTe nanowires and fulfill one of the necessary conditions for the realization of Majorana zero modes.

Quantized anomalous Hall resistivity achieved in molecular beam epitaxy-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides a feasible pathway to high temperature quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect as well as various novel topological quantum phases. Although quantized transport properties have been observed in exfoliated MnBi2Te4 thin flakes, it remains a big challenge to achieve molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films even close to the quantized regime. In this work, we report the realization of quantized anomalous Hall resistivity in MBE-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films with the chemical potential tuned by both controlled in-situ oxygen exposure and top gating. We find that elongated post-annealing obviously elevates the temperature to achieve quantization of the Hall resistivity, but also increases the residual longitudinal resistivity, indicating a picture of high-quality QAH puddles weakly coupled by tunnel barriers. These results help to clarify the puzzles in previous experimental studies on MnBi2Te4 and to find a way out of the big difficulty in obtaining MnBi2Te4 samples showing quantized transport properties.

Electrostatic effects of the MnBi2Te4-superconductor hetero-structures in chiral Majorana search

The realization of chiral Majorana modes is a challenging task. We aim to comprehend the phase diagrams and parameter control capabilities of the actual devices used in the chiral Majorana search. Beyond the well-known minimal models, we develop a numerical simulation scheme using a self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson approach to study, as an example, the MnBi2Te4 thin film coupled to an s-wave superconductor. We show that both the superconducting proximity effect and the tunability of the chemical potential for the topological surface states are significantly influenced by the gate-induced electrostatic potential. This complicates the implementation in experiments, and the actual topological region will be narrowed in stark contrast to those predicted in the previous minimal models. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the chiral Majorana mode still exists in a wide range of experimental parameters with practical tunability.

Topology hierarchy of transition metal dichalcogenides built from quantum spin Hall layers

The evolution of the physical properties of two-dimensional material from monolayer limit to the bulk reveals unique consequences from dimension confinement and provides a distinct tuning knob for applications. Monolayer 1T'-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (1T'-TMDs) with ubiquitous quantum spin Hall (QSH) states are ideal two-dimensional building blocks of various three-dimensional topological phases. However, the stacking geometry was previously limited to the bulk 1T'-WTe2 type. Here, we introduce the novel 2M-TMDs consisting of translationally stacked 1T'-monolayers as promising material platforms with tunable inverted bandgaps and interlayer coupling. By performing advanced polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as first-principles calculations on the electronic structure of 2M-TMDs, we revealed a topology hierarchy: 2M-WSe2, MoS2, and MoSe2 are weak topological insulators (WTIs), whereas 2M-WS2 is a strong topological insulator (STI). Further demonstration of topological phase transitions by tunning interlayer distance indicates that band inversion amplitude and interlayer coupling jointly determine different topological states in 2M-TMDs. We propose that 2M-TMDs are parent compounds of various exotic phases including topological superconductors and promise great application potentials in quantum electronics due to their flexibility in patterning with two-dimensional materials.

CXL over Ethernet: A Novel FPGA-based Memory Disaggregation Design in Data Centers

Memory resources in data centers generally suffer from low utilization and lack of dynamics. Memory disaggregation solves these problems by decoupling CPU and memory, which currently includes approaches based on RDMA or interconnection protocols such as Compute Express Link (CXL). However, the RDMA-based approach involves code refactoring and higher latency. The CXL-based approach supports native memory semantics and overcomes the shortcomings of RDMA, but is limited within rack level. In addition, memory pooling and sharing based on CXL products are currently in the process of early exploration and still take time to be available in the future. In this paper, we propose the CXL over Ethernet approach that the host processor can access the remote memory with memory semantics through Ethernet. Our approach can support native memory load/store access and extends the physical range to cross server and rack levels by taking advantage of CXL and RDMA technologies. We prototype our approach with one server and two FPGA boards with 100 Gbps network and measure the memory access latency. Furthermore, we optimize the memory access path by using data cache and congestion control algorithm in the critical path to further lower access latency. The evaluation results show that the average latency for the server to access remote memory is 1.97 μs, which is about 37% lower than the baseline latency in the industry. The latency can be further reduced to 415 ns with cache block and hit access on FPGA.

Tunable Quantum Anomalous Hall Effects in Ferromagnetic van der Waals Heterostructures

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has unique advantages in topotronic applications, but it is still challenging to realize the QAHE with tunable magnetic and topological properties for building functional devices. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we predict that the in-plane magnetization induced QAHE with Chern numbers C = $\pm$1 and the out-of-plane magnetization induced QAHE with high Chern numbers C = $\pm$3 can be realized in a single material candidate, which is composed of van der Waals (vdW) coupled Bi and MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ monolayers. The switching between different phases of QAHE can be controllable by multiple ways, such as applying strain or (weak) magnetic field or twisting the vdW materials. The prediction of an experimentally available material system hosting robust, highly tunable QAHE will stimulate great research interest in the field. Our work opens a new avenue for the realization of tunable QAHE and provides a practical material platform for the development of topological electronics.

Proximity effect in PbTe-Pb hybrid nanowire Josephson junctions

Semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires are a leading material platform for the realization of Majorana zero modes. The semiconductors in previous studies are dominantly InAs or InSb. In this work, we show the induced superconductivity in a PbTe nanowire epitaxially coupled to a superconductor Pb. The Josephson junction device based on this hybrid reveals a gate-tunable supercurrent in the open regime and a hard superconducting gap in the tunneling regime. By demonstrating the superconducting proximity effect, our result can enable Majorana searches and other applications like gate-tunable qubits in a new semiconductor system.

Plateau regions for zero-bias peaks within 5% of the quantized conductance value $2e^2/h$

Probing an isolated Majorana zero mode is predicted to reveal a tunneling conductance quantized at $2e^2/h$ at zero temperature. Experimentally, a zero-bias peak (ZBP) is expected and its height should remain robust against relevant parameter tuning, forming a quantized plateau. Here, we report the observation of large ZBPs in a thin InAs-Al hybrid nanowire device. The ZBP height can stick close to $2e^2/h$, mostly within $5\%$ tolerance, by sweeping gate voltages and magnetic field. We further map out the phase diagram and identify two plateau regions in the phase space. Despite the presence of disorder and quantum dots, our result constitutes a step forward towards establishing Majorana zero modes.

Probing electron-hole weights of an Andreev bound state by transient currents

Andreev bound states (ABSs) are localized quantum states that contain both electron and hole components. They ubiquitously reside in inhomogeneous superconducting systems. Following theoretical analysis, we propose to probe the electron-hole weights of an ABS via a local tunneling measurement that detects the transient current under a steplike pulse bias. With our protocol, the ABS energy level can also be obtained from peaks of the Fourier spectrum of the transient current. Our protocol can be applied to detect robust zero-energy Majorana bound states (MBSs), which have equal electron-hole weights, in candidate platforms where local tunneling spectroscopy measurement is possible. In the 1D Majorana nanowire model, we numerically calculate the electron-hole weights for different types of low-energy bound states, including ABSs, quasi-MBSs, and MBSs.

Evolution of the electronic structure of ultrathin MnBi2Te4 Films

Ultrathin films of intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 exhibit fascinating quantum properties such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator state. In this work, we systematically investigate the evolution of the electronic structure of MnBi2Te4 thin films. With increasing film thickness, the electronic structure changes from an insulator-type with a large energy gap to one with in-gap topological surface states, which is, however, still drastically different from the bulk material. By surface doping of alkali-metal atoms, a Rashba split band gradually emerges and hybridizes with topological surface states, which not only reconciles the puzzling difference between the electronic structures of the bulk and thin film MnBi2Te4 but also provides an interesting platform to establish Rashba ferromagnet that is attractive for (quantum) anomalous Hall effect. Our results provide important insights into the understanding and engineering of the intriguing quantum properties of MnBi2Te4 thin films.

Liuer Mihou: A Practical Framework for Generating and Evaluating Grey-box Adversarial Attacks against NIDS

Due to its high expressiveness and speed, Deep Learning (DL) has become an increasingly popular choice as the detection algorithm for Network-based Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDSes). Unfortunately, DL algorithms are vulnerable to adversarial examples that inject imperceptible modifications to the input and cause the DL algorithm to misclassify the input. Existing adversarial attacks in the NIDS domain often manipulate the traffic features directly, which hold no practical significance because traffic features cannot be replayed in a real network. It remains a research challenge to generate practical and evasive adversarial attacks. This paper presents the Liuer Mihou attack that generates practical and replayable adversarial network packets that can bypass anomaly-based NIDS deployed in the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The core idea behind Liuer Mihou is to exploit adversarial transferability and generate adversarial packets on a surrogate NIDS constrained by predefined mutation operations to ensure practicality. We objectively analyse the evasiveness of Liuer Mihou against four ML-based algorithms (LOF, OCSVM, RRCF, and SOM) and the state-of-the-art NIDS, Kitsune. From the results of our experiment, we gain valuable insights into necessary conditions on the adversarial transferability of anomaly detection algorithms. Going beyond a theoretical setting, we replay the adversarial attack in a real IoT testbed to examine the practicality of Liuer Mihou. Furthermore, we demonstrate that existing feature-level adversarial defence cannot defend against Liuer Mihou and constructively criticise the limitations of feature-level adversarial defences.

Towards Optimally Efficient Search with Deep Learning for Large-Scale MIMO Systems

This paper investigates the optimal signal detection problem with a particular interest in large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The problem is NP-hard and can be solved optimally by searching the shortest path on the decision tree. Unfortunately, the existing optimal search algorithms often involve prohibitively high complexities, which indicates that they are infeasible in large-scale MIMO systems. To address this issue, we propose a general heuristic search algorithm, namely, hyper-accelerated tree search (HATS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm employs a deep neural network (DNN) to estimate the optimal heuristic, and then use the estimated heuristic to speed up the underlying memory-bounded search algorithm. This idea is inspired by the fact that the underlying heuristic search algorithm reaches the optimal efficiency with the optimal heuristic function. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal bit error rate (BER) performance in large-scale systems, while the memory size can be bounded. In the meanwhile, it visits nearly the fewest tree nodes. This indicates that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal efficiency in practical scenarios, and thereby it is applicable for large-scale systems. Besides, the code for this paper is available at \url{https://github.com/skypitcher/hats}.

Numerical study of PbTe-Pb hybrid nanowires for engineering Majorana zero modes

Epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) hybrid nanowires are potential candidates for implementing Majorana qubits. Recent experimental and theoretical works show that charged impurities in SM remain a major problem in all existing hybrid nanowires, in which the SM is either InAs or InSb while the SC is mainly Al. Here, we theoretically validate the recently proposed PbTe-Pb hybrid nanowire as a potential candidate for Majorana devices. By studying the electrostatic and electronic properties of PbTe nanowires, we demonstrate that the huge dielectric constant of PbTe endows itself a high tolerance of charged impurity, which is a potential advantage over InAs and InSb nanowires. Moreover, we find that the effective axial Landé $g$ factor and Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength of PbTe nanowires are comparable to those of InAs nanowires. The conceivable merits of using Pb as the SC are (i) Pb has a larger superconducting gap, higher critical temperature, and higher parallel critical magnetic field than those of Al; (ii) a superconducting gap comparable with those of InAs-Al and InSb-Al can be induced in PbTe-Pb even by a weak coupling between Pb and PbTe, which simultaneously relieves the adverse renormalization and induced disorder effects on SM from SC; and (iii) Pb film can be grown on PbTe with a thin buffer CdTe layer in between, solving the lattice mismatch problem as an important source of disorder. In the presence of a parallel magnetic field, we show that the typical BdG energy spectrum and tunneling spectroscopy of PbTe-Pb resemble those of InAs and InSb based hybrid nanowires exposed to a tilting magnetic field, as a result of the highly anisotropic Landé $g$ factors of PbTe nanowires. The calculated topological phase diagrams of PbTe-Pb indicate that the multivalley character of PbTe makes it easier than InAs and InSb to access topological superconducting phases.
