Flight Path Optimization with Optimal Control Method

This paper is based on a crucial issue in the aviation world: how to optimize the trajectory and controls given to the aircraft in order to optimize flight time and fuel consumption. This study aims to provide elements of a response to this problem and to define, under certain simplifying assumptions, an optimal response, using Constrained Finite Time Optimal Control(CFTOC). The first step is to define the dynamic model of the aircraft in accordance with the controllable inputs and wind disturbances. Then we will identify a precise objective in terms of optimization and implement an optimization program to solve it under the circumstances of simulated real flight situation. Finally, the optimization result is validated and discussed by different scenarios.

Lite-Mind: Towards Efficient and Robust Brain Representation Network

The limited data availability and the low signal-to-noise ratio of fMRI signals lead to the challenging task of fMRI-to-image retrieval. State-of-the-art MindEye remarkably improves fMRI-to-image retrieval performance by leveraging a large model, i.e., a 996M MLP Backbone per subject, to align fMRI embeddings to the final hidden layer of CLIP's Vision Transformer (ViT). However, significant individual variations exist among subjects, even under identical experimental setups, mandating the training of large subject-specific models. The substantial parameters pose significant challenges in deploying fMRI decoding on practical devices. To this end, we propose Lite-Mind, a lightweight, efficient, and robust brain representation learning paradigm based on Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), which efficiently aligns fMRI voxels to fine-grained information of CLIP. We elaborately design a DFT backbone with Spectrum Compression and Frequency Projector modules to learn informative and robust voxel embeddings. Our experiments demonstrate that Lite-Mind achieves an impressive 94.6% fMRI-to-image retrieval accuracy on the NSD dataset for Subject 1, with 98.7% fewer parameters than MindEye. Lite-Mind is also proven to be able to be migrated to smaller fMRI datasets and establishes a new state-of-the-art for zero-shot classification on the GOD dataset.

Attention Beats Linear for Fast Implicit Neural Representation Generation

Implicit Neural Representation (INR) has gained increasing popularity as a data representation method, serving as a prerequisite for innovative generation models. Unlike gradient-based methods, which exhibit lower efficiency in inference, the adoption of hyper-network for generating parameters in Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP), responsible for executing INR functions, has surfaced as a promising and efficient alternative. However, as a global continuous function, MLP is challenging in modeling highly discontinuous signals, resulting in slow convergence during the training phase and inaccurate reconstruction performance. Moreover, MLP requires massive representation parameters, which implies inefficiencies in data representation. In this paper, we propose a novel Attention-based Localized INR (ANR) composed of a localized attention layer (LAL) and a global MLP that integrates coordinate features with data features and converts them to meaningful outputs. Subsequently, we design an instance representation framework that delivers a transformer-like hyper-network to represent data instances as a compact representation vector. With instance-specific representation vector and instance-agnostic ANR parameters, the target signals are well reconstructed as a continuous function. We further address aliasing artifacts with variational coordinates when obtaining the super-resolution inference results. Extensive experimentation across four datasets showcases the notable efficacy of our ANR method, e.g. enhancing the PSNR value from 37.95dB to 47.25dB on the CelebA dataset. Code is released at https://github.com/Roninton/ANR.

Non-perturbative dynamics of flat-band systems with correlated disorder

We develop a numerical method for the time evolution of Gaussian wave packets on flat-band lattices in the presence of correlated disorder. To achieve this, we introduce a method to generate random on-site energies with prescribed correlations. We verify this method with a one-dimensional (1D) cross-stitch model, and find good agreement with analytical results obtained from the disorder-dressed evolution equations. This allows us to reproduce previous findings, that disorder can mobilize 1D flat-band states which would otherwise remain localized. As explained by the corresponding disorder-dressed evolution equations, such mobilization requires an asymmetric disorder-induced coupling to dispersive bands, a condition that is generically not fulfilled when the flat-band is resonant with the dispersive bands at a Dirac point-like crossing. We exemplify this with the 1D Lieb lattice. While analytical expressions are not available for the two-dimensional (2D) system due to its complexity, we extend the numerical method to the 2D $α-T_3$ model, and find that the initial flat-band wave packet preserves its localization when $α= 0$, regardless of disorder and intersections. However, when $α\neq 0$, the wave packet shifts in real space. We interpret this as a Berry phase controlled, disorder-induced wave-packet mobilization. In addition, we present density functional theory calculations of candidate materials, specifically $\rm Hg_{1-x}Cd_xTe$. The flat-band emerges near the $Γ$ point ($\bf{k}=$0) in the Brillouin zone.

Floating Anchor Diffusion Model for Multi-motif Scaffolding

Motif scaffolding seeks to design scaffold structures for constructing proteins with functions derived from the desired motif, which is crucial for the design of vaccines and enzymes. Previous works approach the problem by inpainting or conditional generation. Both of them can only scaffold motifs with fixed positions, and the conditional generation cannot guarantee the presence of motifs. However, prior knowledge of the relative motif positions in a protein is not readily available, and constructing a protein with multiple functions in one protein is more general and significant because of the synergies between functions. We propose a Floating Anchor Diffusion (FADiff) model. FADiff allows motifs to float rigidly and independently in the process of diffusion, which guarantees the presence of motifs and automates the motif position design. Our experiments demonstrate the efficacy of FADiff with high success rates and designable novel scaffolds. To the best of our knowledge, FADiff is the first work to tackle the challenge of scaffolding multiple motifs without relying on the expertise of relative motif positions in the protein. Code is available at https://github.com/aim-uofa/FADiff.

MLIP: Efficient Multi-Perspective Language-Image Pretraining with Exhaustive Data Utilization

Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining (CLIP) has achieved remarkable success, leading to rapid advancements in multimodal studies. However, CLIP faces a notable challenge in terms of inefficient data utilization. It relies on a single contrastive supervision for each image-text pair during representation learning, disregarding a substantial amount of valuable information that could offer richer supervision. Additionally, the retention of non-informative tokens leads to increased computational demands and time costs, particularly in CLIP's ViT image encoder. To address these issues, we propose Multi-Perspective Language-Image Pretraining (MLIP). In MLIP, we leverage the frequency transform's sensitivity to both high and low-frequency variations, which complements the spatial domain's sensitivity limited to low-frequency variations only. By incorporating frequency transforms and token-level alignment, we expand CILP's single supervision into multi-domain and multi-level supervision, enabling a more thorough exploration of informative image features. Additionally, we introduce a token merging method guided by comprehensive semantics from the frequency and spatial domains. This allows us to merge tokens to multi-granularity tokens with a controllable compression rate to accelerate CLIP. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our design.

Excess Delay from GDP: Measurement and Causal Analysis

Ground Delay Programs (GDPs) have been widely used to resolve excessive demand-capacity imbalances at arrival airports by shifting foreseen airborne delay to pre-departure ground delay. While offering clear safety and efficiency benefits, GDPs may also create additional delay because of imperfect execution and uncertainty in predicting arrival airport capacity. This paper presents a methodology for measuring excess delay resulting from individual GDPs and investigates factors that influence excess delay using regularized regression models. We measured excess delay for 1210 GDPs from 33 U.S. airports in 2019. On a per-restricted flight basis, the mean excess delay is 35.4 min with std of 20.6 min. In our regression analysis of the variation in excess delay, ridge regression is found to perform best. The factors affecting excess delay include time variations during gate out and taxi out for flights subject to the GDP, program rate setting and revisions, and GDP time duration.

Real-Time Go-Around Prediction: A case study of JFK airport

In this paper, we employ the long-short-term memory model (LSTM) to predict the real-time go-around probability as an arrival flight is approaching JFK airport and within 10 nm of the landing runway threshold. We further develop methods to examine the causes to go-around occurrences both from a global view and an individual flight perspective. According to our results, in-trail spacing, and simultaneous runway operation appear to be the top factors that contribute to overall go-around occurrences. We then integrate these pre-trained models and analyses with real-time data streaming, and finally develop a demo web-based user interface that integrates the different components designed previously into a real-time tool that can eventually be used by flight crews and other line personnel to identify situations in which there is a high risk of a go-around.

Parking challenges escalate significantly during large events such as concerts or sports games, yet few studies address dynamic parking lot assignments for such occasions. This paper introduces a smart navigation system designed to optimize parking assignments swiftly during large events, utilizing a mixed search algorithm that accounts for the heterogeneous characteristics of drivers. We conducted simulations in the Berkeley city area during the "Big Game" to validate our system and demonstrate the benefits of our innovative parking assignment approach.

Quasi-single-stage optimization for permanent magnet stellarators

Advanced stellarators are typically optimized in two stages. The plasma equilibrium is optimized first, followed by the design of coils/permanent magnets. However, the coils/permanent magnets in the second stage may become too complex to achieve the desired equilibrium. To address this problem, a quasi-single-stage optimization method has been proposed. In this paper, we introduce this method for designing permanent magnet (PM) stellarators. The new approach combines straightforward PM metrics to penalize the maximum required PM thickness and the mismatch between the fixed-boundary equilibrium and the free-boundary one, along with typical physical targets. Since the degrees of freedom of the PMs are not included and directly used to minimize the objective function in this method, so we call it "quasi-single-stage" optimization. We apply this quasi-single-stage optimization method to find a new quasi-axisymmetric PM design. The new design starts from MUSE, which was initially designed using a two-stage optimization approach. The resulting design, MUSE++, exhibits an order of magnitude lower quasi-symmetric error and a one-order reduction in normal field error. We show that MUSE++ has approximately 30% fewer magnets compared to a proxy model "MUSE-0" that uses the same FAMUS optimization without the benefit of a single-stage equilibrium optimization. These results demonstrate that the new single-stage optimization method can concurrently improve plasma properties and simplify permanent magnet complexity.

Effects of Magnetic Helicity on 3D Equilibria and Self-Organized States in KTX Reversed Field Pinch

The RFP is a toroidal magnetic configuration in which plasmas can spontaneously transform into different self-organized states. Among various states, the QSH state has a dominant component for the magnetic field and significantly improves confinement. Many theoretical and experimental efforts have investigated the transitions among different states. This paper employs the MRxMHD model to study the properties of QSH and other states. The SPEC is used to compute MHD equilibria for the KTX. The toroidal volume of KTX is partitioned into two subvolumes by an internal transport barrier. The geometry of this barrier is adjusted to achieve force balance across the interface, ensuring that the plasma in each subvolume is force-free and that magnetic helicity is conserved. By varying the parameters, we generate distinct self-organized states in KTX. Our findings highlight the crucial role of magnetic helicity in shaping these states. In states with low magnetic helicity in both subvolumes, the plasma exhibits axisymmetric behavior. With increasing core helicity, the plasma gradually transforms from an axisymmetric state to a double-axis helical state and finally to a single-helical-axis state. Elevated core magnetic helicity leads to a more pronounced dominant mode of the boundary magnetic field and a reduced core magnetic shear. This is consistent with previous experimental and numerical results in other RFP devices. We find a linear relationship between the plasma current and helicity in different self-organized states. Our findings suggest that KTX may enter the QSH state when the toroidal current reaches 0.72 MA. This study demonstrates that the stellarator equilibrium code SPEC unveils crucial RFP equilibrium properties, rendering it applicable to a broad range of RFP devices and other toroidal configurations.

Exotic Symmetry Breaking Properties of Self-Dual Fracton Spin Models

Fracton codes host unconventional topological states of matter and are promising for fault-tolerant quantum computation due to their large coding space and strong resilience against decoherence and noise. In this work, we investigate the ground-state properties and phase transitions of two prototypical self-dual fracton spin models -- the tetrahedral Ising model and the fractal Ising model -- which correspond to error-correction procedures for the representative fracton codes of type-I and type-II, the checkerboard code and the Haah's code, respectively, in the error-free limit. They are endowed with exotic symmetry-breaking properties that contrast sharply with the spontaneous breaking of global symmetries and deconfinement transition of gauge theories. To show these unconventional behaviors, which are associated with sub-dimensional symmetries, we construct and analyze the order parameters, correlators, and symmetry generators for both models. Notably, the tetrahedral Ising model acquires an extended semi-local ordering moment, while the fractal Ising model fits into a polynomial ring representation and leads to a fractal order parameter. Numerical studies combined with analytical tools show that both models experience a strong first-order phase transition with an anomalous $L^{-(D-1)}$ scaling, despite the fractal symmetry of the latter. Our work provides new understanding of sub-dimensional symmetry breaking and makes an important step for studying quantum-error-correction properties of the checkerboard and Haah's codes.

Schwinger boson symmetric spin liquids of Shastry-Sutherland model

Motivated by recent experimental and numerical evidences of deconfined quantum critical point and quantum spin-liquid states in spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on Shastry-Sutherland lattice, we studied possible symmetric spin liquid states and their proximate ordered states under Schwinger boson formalism. We found a symmetric gapped $Z_2$ spin-liquid state for intermediate model parameter $0.66 < J_1/J_2 < 0.71$ under mean-field approximation. The Schwinger boson mean-field picture is partially supported by exact-diagonalization and self-consistent spin wave theory results.

Automatic Bi-modal Question Title Generation for Stack Overflow with Prompt Learning

When drafting question posts for Stack Overflow, developers may not accurately summarize the core problems in the question titles, which can cause these questions to not get timely help. Therefore, improving the quality of question titles has attracted the wide attention of researchers. An initial study aimed to automatically generate the titles by only analyzing the code snippets in the question body. However, this study ignored the helpful information in their corresponding problem descriptions. Therefore, we propose an approach SOTitle+ by considering bi-modal information (i.e., the code snippets and the problem descriptions) in the question body. Then we formalize the title generation for different programming languages as separate but related tasks and utilize multi-task learning to solve these tasks. Later we fine-tune the pre-trained language model CodeT5 to automatically generate the titles. Unfortunately, the inconsistent inputs and optimization objectives between the pre-training task and our investigated task may make fine-tuning hard to fully explore the knowledge of the pre-trained model. To solve this issue, SOTitle+ further prompt-tunes CodeT5 with hybrid prompts (i.e., mixture of hard and soft prompts). To verify the effectiveness of SOTitle+, we construct a large-scale high-quality corpus from recent data dumps shared by Stack Overflow. Our corpus includes 179,119 high-quality question posts for six popular programming languages. Experimental results show that SOTitle+ can significantly outperform four state-of-the-art baselines in both automatic evaluation and human evaluation. Our work indicates that considering bi-modal information and prompt learning in Stack Overflow title generation is a promising exploration direction.

CoGenT: A Content-oriented Generative-hit Framework for Content Delivery Networks

The service provided by content delivery networks (CDNs) may overlook content locality, leaving room for potential performance improvement. In this study, we explore the feasibility of leveraging generated data as a replacement for fetching data in missing scenarios based on content locality. Due to sufficient local computing resources and reliable generation efficiency, we propose a content-oriented generative-hit framework (CoGenT) for CDNs. CoGenT utilizes idle computing resources on edge nodes to generate requested data based on similar or related cached data to achieve hits. Our implementation in a real-world system demonstrates that CoGenT reduces the average access latency by half. Additionally, experiments conducted on a simulator also confirm that CoGenT can enhance existing caching algorithms, resulting in reduced latency and bandwidth usage.

Multimodal Federated Learning with Missing Modality via Prototype Mask and Contrast

In real-world scenarios, multimodal federated learning often faces the practical challenge of intricate modality missing, which poses constraints on building federated frameworks and significantly degrades model inference accuracy. Existing solutions for addressing missing modalities generally involve developing modality-specific encoders on clients and training modality fusion modules on servers. However, these methods are primarily constrained to specific scenarios with either unimodal clients or complete multimodal clients, struggling to generalize effectively in the intricate modality missing scenarios. In this paper, we introduce a prototype library into the FedAvg-based Federated Learning framework, thereby empowering the framework with the capability to alleviate the global model performance degradation resulting from modality missing during both training and testing. The proposed method utilizes prototypes as masks representing missing modalities to formulate a task-calibrated training loss and a model-agnostic uni-modality inference strategy. In addition, a proximal term based on prototypes is constructed to enhance local training. Experimental results demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of our approach. Compared to the baselines, our method improved inference accuracy by 3.7\% with 50\% modality missing during training and by 23.8\% during uni-modality inference. Residual Stress-Driven Non-Euclidean Morphing in Origami Structures

Non-Euclidean surfaces are ubiquitous in numerous engineering fields, such as automotive, aerospace, and biomedical engineering domains. Morphing origami has numerous potential engineering applications, including soft robots, mechanical metamaterials, antennas, aerospace structures, and biomedical devices, owing to its intrinsic morphing features from two-dimensional (2D) planes to three-dimensional (3D) surfaces. However, the current one-dimensional (1D) hinge deformation-driven transformation of foldable origami with rigid or slightly deformable panels cannot achieve a 3D complex and large curvilinear morphing. Moreover, most active origami structures use thin hinges with soft materials on their creases, thus resulting in a lower load capability. This study proposes a novel origami morphing method that demonstrates large free-form surface morphing, e.g., Euclidean to non-Euclidean surface morphing with shape-locking. We embedded tensorial anisotropic stress in origami panels during the extrusion-based 3D printing of shape memory polymers. The extrusion-based 3D printing of isotropic shape memory polymers can produce tensorial anisotropic stress in origami panels during fabrication, which can realize large non-Euclidean surface morphing with multiple deformation modes. The connecting topology of the origami unit cells influences the global morphing behavior owing to the interaction of the deformation of adjacent panels. Non-Euclidean morphing integrated with four-dimensional (4D) printing can provide multimodal shape locking at material and structural levels. The non-Euclidean surface morphing caused by tensorial residual stress in the panel during 3D printing expands the design space of origami and kirigami structures.

Image change detection with only a few samples

This paper considers image change detection with only a small number of samples, which is a significant problem in terms of a few annotations available. A major impediment of image change detection task is the lack of large annotated datasets covering a wide variety of scenes. Change detection models trained on insufficient datasets have shown poor generalization capability. To address the poor generalization issue, we propose using simple image processing methods for generating synthetic but informative datasets, and design an early fusion network based on object detection which could outperform the siamese neural network. Our key insight is that the synthetic data enables the trained model to have good generalization ability for various scenarios. We compare the model trained on the synthetic data with that on the real-world data captured from a challenging dataset, CDNet, using six different test sets. The results demonstrate that the synthetic data is informative enough to achieve higher generalization ability than the insufficient real-world data. Besides, the experiment shows that utilizing a few (often tens of) samples to fine-tune the model trained on the synthetic data will achieve excellent results.
