Time-dependent invasion laws for a liquid-liquid displacement system

Capillary-driven flow of fluids occurs frequently in nature and has a wide range of technological applications in the fields of industry, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, and microfluidics. By using the Onsager variational principle, we propose a model to systematically study the capillary imbibition in titled tubes, and find different laws of time-dependent capillary invasion length for liquid-liquid displacement system other than Lucas-Washburn type under different circumstances. The good agreement between our model and experimental results shows that the imbibition dynamics in a capillary tube with a prefilled liquid slug can be well captured by the dynamic equation derived in this paper. Our results bear important implications for macroscopic descriptions of multiphase flows in microfluidic systems and porous media.

Cellular uptake of active nonspherical nanoparticles

Due to the potential applications in biomedical engineering, it becomes more and more important to understand the process of engulfment and internalization of nanoparticles (NPs) by cell membranes. Despite the fact that the interaction between cell membranes and passive particles has been widely studied, the interaction between cell membranes and self-propelled nonspherical NPs remains to be elucidated. Here we present a theoretical model to systematically investigate the influence of the active force, aspect ratio of NPs, particle size and membrane properties (adhesion energy density and membrane tension) on the cellular uptake of a nonspherical nanoparticle. It is found that the active force generated by an NP can trigger a type of first-order wrapping transition from a small partial wrapping state to a large one. In addition, the phase diagram in the force-aspect ratio (particle size, adhesion energy density and membrane tension) space displays more complex behaviors compared with that for the passive wrapping mediated merely by adhesion. These results may provide a useful guidance to the study of activity-driven cellular entry of active particles into cells.

Machine Learning for Automated Mitral Regurgitation Detection from Cardiac Imaging

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a heart valve disease with potentially fatal consequences that can only be forestalled through timely diagnosis and treatment. Traditional diagnosis methods are expensive, labor-intensive and require clinical expertise, posing a barrier to screening for MR. To overcome this impediment, we propose a new semi-supervised model for MR classification called CUSSP. CUSSP operates on cardiac imaging slices of the 4-chamber view of the heart. It uses standard computer vision techniques and contrastive models to learn from large amounts of unlabeled data, in conjunction with specialized classifiers to establish the first ever automated MR classification system. Evaluated on a test set of 179 labeled -- 154 non-MR and 25 MR -- sequences, CUSSP attains an F1 score of 0.69 and a ROC-AUC score of 0.88, setting the first benchmark result for this new task.

Quality-Cost Trade-off on Constructing Logical Views for Vehicular Cyber-Physical Systems: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

With the development of sensing technologies, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, edge computing paradigm, vehicular cyber-physical systems (VCPS) are emerging as the most fundamental platform for realizing future intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). In particular, the construction of logical views at the edge nodes based on heterogeneous information sensing and uploading are critical to the realization of VCPS. However, a higher-quality view in terms of timeliness and accuracy may require higher cost on sensing and uploading. In view of this, this paper is dedicated to striking a balance between the quality and the cost for constructing logical views of VCPS. Specifically, we first derive an information sensing model based on multi-class M/G/1 priority queue and a data uploading model based on reliability-guaranteed vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. On this basis, we design two metrics, namely, age of view (AoV) and cost of view (CoV), simultaneously. Then, we formulate a bi-objective problem to maximize the AoV and minimize the CoV. Further, we propose a distributed distributional deep deterministic policy gradient (D4PG) solution to determine sensing information, frequency, uploading priority, transmission power, and V2I bandwidth. Finally, we build a simulation model and give a comprehensive performance evaluation, and the simulation results conclusively demonstrate the superiority of the proposed solution.

Exciton-exciton Interaction in Monolayer MoSe$_2$ from Mutual Screening of Coulomb Binding

The potential for low-threshold optical nonlinearity has received significant attention in the fields of photonics and conceptual optical neuron networks. Excitons in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are particularly promising in this regard as reduced screening and dimensional confinement foster their pronounced many-body interactions towards nonlinearity. However, experimental determination of the interactions remains ambiguous, as optical pumping in general creates a mixture of excitons and unbound carriers, where the impacts of band gap renormalization and carrier screening on exciton energy counteract each other. Here by comparing the influences on exciton ground and excited states energies in the photoluminescence spectroscopy of monolayer MoSe$_2$, we are able to identify separately the screening of Coulomb binding by the neutral excitons and by charge carriers. The energy difference between exciton ground state (A-1s) and excited state (A-2s) red-shifts by 5.5 meV when the neutral exciton density increases from 0 to $4\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, in contrast to the blue shifts with the increase of either electron or hole density. This energy difference change is attributed to the mutual screening of Coulomb binding of neutral excitons, from which we extract an exciton polarizability of $α_{2D}^{\rm exciton} = 2.55\times 10^{-17}$ eV(m/V)$^2$. Our finding uncovers a new mechanism that dominates the repulsive part of many-body interaction between neutral excitons.

In-Plane Electric Field Induced Orbital Hybridization of Excitonic States In Monolayer WSe2

The giant exciton binding energy and the richness of degrees of freedom make monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide an unprecedented playground for exploring exciton physics in 2D systems. Thanks to the well energetically separated excitonic states, the response of the discrete excitonic states to the electric field could be precisely examined. Here we utilize the photocurrent spectroscopy to probe excitonic states under a static in-plane electric field. We demonstrate that the in-plane electric field leads to a significant orbital hybridization of Rydberg excitonic states with different angular momentum (especially orbital hybridization of 2s and 2p) and consequently optically actives 2p-state exciton. Besides, the electric-field controlled mixing of the high lying exciton state and continuum band enhances the oscillator strength of the discrete excited exciton states. This electric field modulation of the excitonic states in monolayer TMDs provides a paradigm of the manipulation of 2D excitons for potential applications of the electro-optical modulation in 2D semiconductors.

Wrapping dynamics and full uptake conditions for nonspherical active nanoparticles

The cellular uptake of self-propelled nanoparticles (NPs) or viruses, usually nonspherical, by cell membrane is crucial in many biological processes. In this study, using Onsager variational principle, we obtain a general wrapping equation for nonspherical self-propelled nanoparticles. Two analytical critical conditions are theoretically derived, one for the continuous full uptake of prolate particles and the other for snapthrough full wrapping of oblate particles. They capture considerably well the full uptake critical boundaries in the phase diagrams constructed in terms of active force, aspect ratio, adhesion energy density, and membrane tension based on numerical calculations. It is found that enhancing activity (active force), reducing effective dynamic viscosity, increasing adhesion energy density, and decreasing membrane tension, can significantly improve the wrapping efficiency for the self-propelled particles. These results elucidate some of the previous specific investigations conclusively and may offer novel possibilities for designing an effective active NP-based vehicle for controlled drug delivery.

Vesiculation mechanisms mediated by anisotropic proteins

Endocytosis is an essential biological process for the trafficking of macromolecules (cargo) and membrane proteins in cells. In yeast cells, this involves the invagination of a tubular structure on the membrane and the formation of endocytic vesicles. Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs (BAR) proteins holding a crescent-shape are generally assumed to be the active player to squeeze the tubular structure and pinch off the vesicle by forming a scaffold on the side of the tubular membrane. Here we use the extended Helfrich model to theoretically investigate how BAR proteins help drive the formation of vesicles via generating anisotropic curvatures. Our results show that, within the classical Helfrich model, increasing the spontaneous curvature at the side of a tubular membrane is unable to reduce the tube radius to a critical size to induce membrane fission. However, membranes coated with proteins that generate anisotropic curvatures are prone to experience an hourglass-shaped necking or a tube-shaped necking process, an important step leading to membrane fission and vesicle formation. In addition, our study shows that depending on the type of anisotropic curvatures generated by a protein, the force to maintain the protein coated membrane at a tubular shape exhibits qualitatively different relationship with the spontaneous curvature. This result provides an experimental guidance to determine the type of anisotropic curvatures of a protein.

Age of View: A New Metric for Evaluating Heterogeneous Information Fusion in Vehicular Cyber-Physical Systems

Heterogeneous information fusion is one of the most critical issues for realizing vehicular cyber-physical systems (VCPSs). This work makes the first attempt at quantitatively measuring the quality of heterogeneous information fusion in VCPS by designing a new metric called Age of View (AoV). Specifically, we derive a sensing model based on a multi-class M/G/1 priority queue and a transmission model based on Shannon theory. On this basis, we formally define AoV by modeling the timeliness, completeness, and consistency of the heterogeneous information fusion in VCPS and formulate the problem aiming to minimize the system's average AoV. Further, we propose a new solution called Multi-agent Difference-Reward-based deep reinforcement learning with a Greedy Bandwidth Allocation (MDR-GBA) to solve the problem. In particular, each vehicle acts as an independent agent and decides the sensing frequencies and uploading priorities of heterogeneous information. Meanwhile, the roadside unit (RSU) decides the Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) bandwidth allocation for each vehicle based on a greedy scheme. Finally, we build the simulation model and compare the performance of the proposed solution with state-of-the-art algorithms. The experimental results conclusively demonstrate the significance of the new metric and the superiority of the proposed solution.

Dynamics of droplets driven by electrowetting

Even though electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) is a useful strategy in a wide array of biological and engineering processes with numerous droplet-manipulation applications, there is still a lack of complete theoretical interpretation on the dynamics of electrowetting. In this paper, we present an effective theoretical model and use Onsager variational principle to successfully derive the governing equations of non-equilibrium electrowetting dynamics for a droplet in both overdamped and underdamped regimes. It is found that the spreading and retraction dynamics of a droplet on EWOD substrates can be fairly well captured in the overdamped regime. By varying liquid viscosity, droplet size, and applied voltage, we confirm that the transient dynamics of EW can be characterized by a timescale independent of liquid viscosity, droplet size and applied voltage. Our model provides a complete fundamental explanation of EW-driven spreading dynamics, which is important for a wide range of applications, from self-cleaning to novel optical and digital microfluidic devices.

How does an external electric field trigger the Cassie-Baxter-Wenzel wetting transition on a textured surface?

Understanding the critical condition and mechanism of the droplet wetting transition between Cassie-Baxter state and Wenzel state triggered by an external electric field is of considerable importance because of its numerous applications in industry and engineering. However, such a wetting transition on a patterned surface is still not fully understood, e.g., the effects of electro-wetting number, geometry of the patterned surfaces, and droplet volume on the transition have not been systematically investigated. In this paper, we propose a theoretical model for the Cassie-Baxter- Wenzel wetting transition triggered by applying an external voltage on a droplet placed on a mircopillared surface or a porous substrate. It is found that the transition is realized by lowering the energy barrier created by the intermediate composite state considerably, which enables the droplet to cross the energy barrier and complete the transition process. Our calculations also indicate that for fixed droplet volume, the critical electrowetting number (voltage) will increase (decrease) along with the surface roughness for a micro-pillar patterned (porous) surface, and if the surface roughness is fixed, a small droplet tends to ease the critical electrowetting condition for the transition. Besides, three dimensional phase diagrams in terms of electrowetting number, surface roughness, and droplet volume are constructed to illustrate the Cassie-Baxter-Wenzel wetting transition. Our theoretical model can be used to explain the previous experimental results about the Cassie-Baxter-Wenzel wetting transition reported in the literature.

Critical condition for electrowetting-induced detachment of a droplet from a curved surface

Based on energy conservation, we derive a critical condition theoretically for electrowettinginduced droplet detachment from a hydrophobic curved surface. Phase diagrams are constructed in terms of droplet volume, viscosity, Ohnesorge number, friction coefficient at contact line, surface curvature, surface wettability and electrowetting number. The deduced critical condition offers a general and quantitative prediction on when the detachment occurs, a criterion enabling us to gain more insights into how to accurately manipulate the electrowetting-induced detachment of an aqueous droplet on a curved surface. The results obtained in this paper also imply that the detachable regimes of the phase diagrams can be enlarged through increasing droplet volume and surface curvature, and reducing liquid viscosity, friction coefficient, Ohnesorge number and wettability of substrates.

Electrostatics in a crooked nanochannel in a newly developed curvilinear coordinate system

Both biological and artificial nanochannels in crooked shape exhibit unusual transportational characteristics, bringing about a challenge to the traditional theoretical analysis of nanofluidics, partly due to their complicated boundary description. In this paper, by developing a curvilinear coordinate system for crooked nanochannels, we successfully solve the electrostatic Poisson-Boltzmann equation analytically for a two-dimensional nanochannel, with its effectiveness confirmed through numerical calculation. The influences of the geometric profile of the nanochannel on the distribution of electric potential, ionic concentration, and surface charge on channel walls can be quantitatively evaluated in a facilitated way in terms of these curvilinear coordinates. Such a technique can be widely applied to many nanofluidic systems.

Many-body effect in optical properties of monolayer molybdenum diselenide

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) provide a paradigm of composite Boson in 2D system. This letter reports a photoluminescence and reflectance study of excitons in monolayer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) with electrostatic gating. We observe the repulsive and attractive Fermi polaron modes of the band edge exciton, its excited state and the spin-off excitons. Our data validate the polaronic behavior of excitonic states in the system quantitatively where the simple three-particle trion model is insufficient to explain.

Vehicular Fog Computing Enabled Real-time Collision Warning via Trajectory Calibration

Vehicular fog computing (VFC) has been envisioned as a promising paradigm for enabling a variety of emerging intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, due to inevitable as well as non-negligible issues in wireless communication, including transmission latency and packet loss, it is still challenging in implementing safety-critical applications, such as real-time collision warning in vehicular networks. In this paper, we present a vehicular fog computing architecture, aiming at supporting effective and real-time collision warning by offloading computation and communication overheads to distributed fog nodes. With the system architecture, we further propose a trajectory calibration based collision warning (TCCW) algorithm along with tailored communication protocols. Specifically, an application-layer vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication delay is fitted by the Stable distribution with real-world field testing data. Then, a packet loss detection mechanism is designed. Finally, TCCW calibrates real-time vehicle trajectories based on received vehicle status including GPS coordinates, velocity, acceleration, heading direction, as well as the estimation of communication delay and the detection of packet loss. For performance evaluation, we build the simulation model and implement conventional solutions including cloud-based warning and fog-based warning without calibration for comparison. Real-vehicle trajectories are extracted as the input, and the simulation results demonstrate that the effectiveness of TCCW in terms of the highest precision and recall in a wide range of scenarios.

Formation of a fast "lane" for positional transition in a microparticle-suspended nematic liquid crystal cell

In this paper, based on the numerical calculation of total energy utilizing the Green's function method, we found that the external electric field applied to a microparticle-suspended nematic liquid crystal cell, if reaching a critical value, combined with its direction, surface anchoring feature and molecular dielectric anisotropy, is possible to create an anisotropic "bubble" around the microparticle with a vertical fast "lane", in which the microparticle can, driven by the asymmetric buoyant force, vertically move swiftly from the cell's midplane to a new equilibrium position, triggering a positional transition discovered by the author previously. Such a new equilibrium position is decided via a competition between the buoyant force and the effective force built upon the microparticle by the elastic energy gradient along the "lane". The threshold value of external field, depends on thickness $L$ and Frank elastic constant $K$ and slightly on the microparticle size and density, in a Fréedericksz-like manner, but by a factor. For a nematic liquid crystal cell with planar surface alignment, a bistable equilibrium structure for the transition is found when the direction of the applied electric field is (a) perpendicular to the two plates of the cell with positive molecular dielectric anisotropy, or (b) parallel to the two plates and the anchoring direction of the cell with negative molecular dielectric anisotropy. Except for the formation of a vertical fast "lane", when the electric field applied is parallel to both the two plates and perpendicular to the anchoring direction, the microparticle suspended in the nematic liquid crystal tends to be trapped in the midplane, regardless of the sign of the molecular dielectric anisotropy. Such phenomenon also occurs for negative molecular dielectric anisotropy while the external is applied perpendicular to the two plates.

Multi-Resolution Weak Supervision for Sequential Data

Since manually labeling training data is slow and expensive, recent industrial and scientific research efforts have turned to weaker or noisier forms of supervision sources. However, existing weak supervision approaches fail to model multi-resolution sources for sequential data, like video, that can assign labels to individual elements or collections of elements in a sequence. A key challenge in weak supervision is estimating the unknown accuracies and correlations of these sources without using labeled data. Multi-resolution sources exacerbate this challenge due to complex correlations and sample complexity that scales in the length of the sequence. We propose Dugong, the first framework to model multi-resolution weak supervision sources with complex correlations to assign probabilistic labels to training data. Theoretically, we prove that Dugong, under mild conditions, can uniquely recover the unobserved accuracy and correlation parameters and use parameter sharing to improve sample complexity. Our method assigns clinician-validated labels to population-scale biomedical video repositories, helping outperform traditional supervision by 36.8 F1 points and addressing a key use case where machine learning has been severely limited by the lack of expert labeled data. On average, Dugong improves over traditional supervision by 16.0 F1 points and existing weak supervision approaches by 24.2 F1 points across several video and sensor classification tasks.

Freedericksz-like positional transition of a micro-droplet suspended in a nematic cell

In this paper, a Freedericksz-like positional transition is found for a spherical micro-droplet suspended in a nematic liquid crystal cell in the presence of an external electric field. Based on the numerical calculation of elastic energy using Green function method, the equilibrium position of micro-droplet is decided through a competition between the buoyant force and the effective force built by the elastic energy gradient existing inside the nematic liquid crystal(NLC) cell. It is shown that the elastic energy dominates the kinetics of micro-droplet until the external field applied reaches a critical value large enough to flatten the elastic energy contour in the central region, which enables the asymmetric buoyant force to drive the liquid droplet abruptly from the cell midplane to a new equilibrium position. It is also found that such a threshold value of external field, which triggers positional transition, depends on thickness $L$ and Frank elastic constant $K$, in a Freedericksz-like manner, but multiplied by a factor of $3\sqrtπ$. An explicit formula proposed for the critical electric field agrees extremely well with the numerical calculation.
