Thermal Transport in MoS$_2$ from Molecular Dynamics using Different Empirical Potentials

Thermal properties of molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) have recently attracted attention related to fundamentals of heat propagation in strongly anisotropic materials, and in the context of potential applications to optoelectronics and thermoelectrics. Multiple empirical potentials have been developed for classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of this material, but it has been unclear which provides the most realistic results. Here, we calculate lattice thermal conductivity of single- and multi-layer pristine MoS$_2$ by employing three different thermal transport MD methods: equilibrium, nonequilibrium, and homogeneous nonequilibrium ones. These methods allow us to verify the consistency of our results and also facilitate comparisons with previous works, where different schemes have been adopted. Our results using variants of the Stillinger-Weber potential are at odds with some previous ones and we analyze the possible origins of the discrepancies in detail. We show that, among the potentials considered here, the reactive empirical bond order (REBO) potential gives the most reasonable predictions of thermal transport properties as compared to experimental data. With the REBO potential, we further find that isotope scattering has only a small effect on thermal conduction in MoS$_2$ and the in-plane thermal conductivity decreases with increasing layer number and saturates beyond about three layers. We identify the REBO potential as a transferable empirical potential for MD simulations of MoS$_2$ which can be used to study thermal transport properties in more complicated situations such as in systems containing defects or engineered nanoscale features. This work establishes a firm foundation for understanding heat transport properties of MoS$_2$ using MD simulations.

Thermal transport properties of single-layer black phosphorous from extensive molecular dynamics simulations

We compute the anisotropic in-plane thermal conductivity of suspended single-layer black phosphorous (SLBP) using three molecular dynamics (MD) based methods, including the equilibrium MD method, the nonequilibrium MD (NEMD) method, and the homogeneous nonequilibrium MD (HNEMD) method. Two existing parameterizations of the Stillinger-Weber (SW) potential for SLBP are used. Consistent results are obtained for all the three methods and conflicting results from previous MD simulations are critically assessed. Among the three methods, the HNEMD method is the most and the NEMD method the least efficient. The thermal conductivity values from our MD simulations are about an order of magnitude larger than the most recent predictions obtained using the Boltzmann transport equation approach considering long-range interactions in density functional theory calculations, suggesting that the short-range SW potential might be inadequate for describing the phonon anharmonicity in SLBP.

Secure Phrase Search for Intelligent Processing of Encrypted Data in Cloud-Based IoT

Phrase search allows retrieval of documents containing an exact phrase, which plays an important role in many machine learning applications for cloud-based IoT, such as intelligent medical data analytics. In order to protect sensitive information from being leaked by service providers, documents (e.g., clinic records) are usually encrypted by data owners before being outsourced to the cloud. This, however, makes the search operation an extremely challenging task. Existing searchable encryption schemes for multi-keyword search operations fail to perform phrase search, as they are unable to determine the location relationship of multiple keywords in a queried phrase over encrypted data on the cloud server side. In this paper, we propose P3, an efficient privacy-preserving phrase search scheme for intelligent encrypted data processing in cloud-based IoT. Our scheme exploits the homomorphic encryption and bilinear map to determine the location relationship of multiple queried keywords over encrypted data. It also utilizes a probabilistic trapdoor generation algorithm to protect users search patterns. Thorough security analysis demonstrates the security guarantees achieved by P3. We implement a prototype and conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets. The evaluation results show that compared with existing multikeyword search schemes, P3 can greatly improve the search accuracy with moderate overheads.

A sharp threshold of propagation connectivity for mixed random hypergraphs

This paper studies the propagation connectivity of a random hypergraph $\mathbb{G}$ containing both 2-edges and 3-hyperedges. We find an exact threshold of the propagation connectivity of $\mathbb{G}$: If $I_{ε,r}<-1$, then $\mathbb{G}$ is not propagation connected with high probability; while if $I_{ε,r}>-1$, then $\mathbb{G}$ is propagation connected with high probability, where $I_{ε,r}$ is a constant dependent on the parameters of 2 and 3-edge probabilities.

Considerations for utilizing sodium chloride in epitaxial molybdenum disulfide

The utilization of alkali salts, such as NaCl and KI, have enabled the successful growth of large single domain and fully coalesced polycrystalline two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide layers. However, the impact of alkali salts on photonic and electronic properties are not fully established. In this work, we report alkali-free epitaxy of MoS2 on sapphire and benchmark the properties against alkali-assisted growth of MoS2. This study demonstrates that although NaCl can dramatically increase the domain size of monolayer MoS2 by 20 times, it can also induce strong optical and electronic heterogeneities in as-grown large-scale films. This work elucidates that utilization of NaCl can lead to variation in growth rates, loss of epitaxy, and a high density of nanoscale MoS2 particles (4/μm2). Such phenomena suggest that alkali atoms play an important role in Mo and S adatom mobility and strongly influence the 2D/sapphire interface during growth. Compared to alkali-free synthesis under the same growth conditions, MoS2 growth assisted by NaCl results in >1% tensile strain in as-grown domains, which reduces photoluminescence by ~20x and degrades transistor performance.

Budget-aware Online Task Assignment in Spatial Crowdsourcing

The prevalence of mobile internet techniques stimulates the emergence of various spatial crowdsourcing applications. Certain of the applications serve for requesters, budget providers, who submit a batch of tasks and a fixed budget to platform with the desire to search suitable workers to complete the tasks in maximum quantity. Platform lays stress on optimizing assignment strategies on seeking less budget-consumed worker-task pairs to meet requesters' demands. Existing research on the task assignment with budget constraint mostly focuses on static offline scenarios, where the spatiotemporal information of all workers and tasks is known in advance. However, workers usually appear dynamically on real spatial crowdsourcing platforms, where existing solutions can hardly handle it. In this paper, we formally define a novel problem Budget-aware Online task Assignment(BOA) in spatial crowdsourcing applications. BOA aims to maximize the number of assigned worker- task pairs under a budget constraint where workers appear dynamically on platforms. To address the BOA problem, we first propose an efficient threshold-based greedy algorithm Greedy-RT which utilizes a random generated threshold to prune the pairs with large travel cost. Greedy-RT performs well in adversary model when compared with simple greedy algorithm, but it is unstable in random model for its randomly generated threshold may produce poor quality in matching size. We then propose a revised algorithm Greedy-OT which could learn approximately optimal threshold from historical data, and consequently improves matching size significantly in both models. Finally, we verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods through extensive experiments on real and synthetic datasets.

Robust Edge-Preserved Surface Mesh Polycube Deformation

The problem of polycube construction or deformation is an essential problem in computer graphics. In this paper, we present a robust, simple, efficient and automatic algorithm to deform the meshes of arbitrary shapes into their polycube ones. We derive a clear relationship between a mesh and its corresponding polycube shape. Our algorithm is edge-preserved, and works on surface meshes with or without boundaries. Our algorithm outperforms previous ones in speed, robustness, efficiency. Our method is simple to implement. To demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of our method, we apply it to hundreds of models of varying complexity and topology. We demonstrat that our method compares favorably to other state-of-the-art polycube deformation methods.

Theoretical investigation of novel electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of metallic hydrogen at 495 GPa

Atomic metallic hydrogen has been produced in the laboratory at high pressure and low temperature, prompting further investigations of its different properties. However, purely experimental approaches are infeasible because of the extreme requirements in producing and preserving the metastable phase. Here we perform a systematic investigation of the electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen at 495 GPa using first-principles calculations. We calculate the electronic structure and dielectric function to verify the metallic behaviour of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen. The calculated total plasma frequency from both intraband and interband transitions, 33.40 eV, agrees well with the experimental result. The mechanical properties including elastic stability and sound velocity are also investigated. The mechanical stability of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is limited by shear modulus other than bulk modulus, and the high Young's modulus indicates that $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is a stiff material. After investigating the lattice vibrational properties, we study the thermodynamical properties and lattice anharmonicity to understand thermal behaviours in metallic hydrogen. Finally, the lattice thermal conductivity of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is calculated to be 194.72 W/mK and 172.96 W/mK along the $x$ and $z$ directions, respectively. Using metallic hydrogen as an example, we demonstrate that first-principles calculations can be a game-changing solution to understand a variety of material properties in extreme conditions.

Specialty-Aware Task Assignment in Spatial Crowdsourcing

With the rapid development of Mobile Internet, spatial crowdsourcing is gaining more and more attention from both academia and industry. In spatial crowdsourcing, spatial tasks are sent to workers based on their locations. A wide kind of tasks in spatial crowdsourcing are specialty-aware, which are complex and need to be completed by workers with different skills collaboratively. Existing studies on specialty-aware spatial crowdsourcing assume that each worker has a united charge when performing different tasks, no matter how many skills of her/him are used to complete the task, which is not fair and practical. In this paper, we study the problem of specialty-aware task assignment in spatial crowdsourcing, where each worker has fine-grained charge for each of their skills, and the goal is to maximize the total number of completed tasks based on tasks' budget and requirements on particular skills. The problem is proven to be NP-hard. Thus, we propose two efficient heuristics to solve the problem. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our solutions.

Image Correction via Deep Reciprocating HDR Transformation

Image correction aims to adjust an input image into a visually pleasing one. Existing approaches are proposed mainly from the perspective of image pixel manipulation. They are not effective to recover the details in the under/over exposed regions. In this paper, we revisit the image formation procedure and notice that the missing details in these regions exist in the corresponding high dynamic range (HDR) data. These details are well perceived by the human eyes but diminished in the low dynamic range (LDR) domain because of the tone mapping process. Therefore, we formulate the image correction task as an HDR transformation process and propose a novel approach called Deep Reciprocating HDR Transformation (DRHT). Given an input LDR image, we first reconstruct the missing details in the HDR domain. We then perform tone mapping on the predicted HDR data to generate the output LDR image with the recovered details. To this end, we propose a united framework consisting of two CNNs for HDR reconstruction and tone mapping. They are integrated end-to-end for joint training and prediction. Experiments on the standard benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against state-of-the-art image correction methods.

Electronic, optical and transport properties of van der Waals Transition-metal Dichalcogenides Heterostructures: A First-principle Study

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MX$_2$ (M = Mo, W; X= S, Se, Te) possess unique properties and novel applications. In this work, we perform first-principles calculations on the van der Waals (vdW) stacked MX$_2$ heterostructures to investigate their electronic, optical and transport properties systematically. We perform the so-called Anderson's rule to classify the heterostructures by providing the scheme of the construction of energy band diagrams for the heterostructure consisting of two semiconductor materials. For most of the MX$_2$ heterostructures, the conduction band maximum (CBM) and valence band minimum (VBM) reside in two separate semiconductors, forming type II band structure, thus the electron-holes pairs are spatially separated. We also find strong interlayer coupling at $Γ$ point after forming MX$_2$ heterostructures, even leading to the indirect band gap. While the band structure near $K$ point remain as the independent monolayer. The carrier mobilities of MX$_2$ heterostructures depend on three decisive factors, elastic modulus, effective mass and deformation potential constant, which are discussed and contrasted with those of monolayer MX$_2$, respectively.

Multiphase Magnetic Systems: Measurement and Simulation

Multiphase magnetic systems are common in nature and are increasingly being recognized in technical applications. One characterization method which has shown great promise for determining separate and collective effects of multiphase magnetic systems is first order reversal curves (FORCs). Several examples are given of FORC patterns which provide distinguishing evidence of multiple phases. In parallel, a visualization method for understanding multiphase magnetic interaction is given, which allocates Preisach magnetic elements as an input 'Preisach hysteron distribution pattern' (PHDP) to enable simulation of different 'wasp-waisted' magnetic behaviors. These simulated systems allow reproduction of different major hysteresis loop, FORC pattern, and switching field distributions of real systems and parameterized theoretical systems. The experimental FORC measurements and FORC diagrams of four commercially obtained magnetic materials, particularly those sold as nanopowders, shows that these materials are often not phase pure. They exhibit complex hysteresis behaviors that are not predictable based on relative phase fraction obtained by characterization methods such as diffraction. These multiphase materials, consisting of various fractions of BaFe12O19, epsilon-Fe2O3, and gamma-Fe2O3, are discussed.

Two-Dimensional Hyperferroelectric Metals: a Different Route to Ferromagnetic-Ferroelectric Multiferroics

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics have attracted numerous attention due to their fascinating properties and promising applications. Although the ferroelectric (FE)-ferroelastic and ferromagnetic (FM)-ferroelastic multiferroics have been observed/predicted in 2D systems, 2D ferromagnetic-ferroelectric (FM-FE) multiferroics remain to be discovered since FM insulators are very rare. Here, we proposed for the first time the concept of 2D hyperferroelectric metals, with which the insulating prerequisite for the FM-FE multiferroic is no longer required in 2D systems. We validate the concept of 2D hyperferroelectric metals and 2D metallic FM-FE multiferroics by performing first-principle calculations on 2D CrN and CrB2 systems. The 2D buckled monolayer CrN is found to be a hyperferroelectic metal with the FM ground state, i.e., a 2D FM-FE multiferroic. With the global optimization approach, we find the 2D CrB2 system has an antiferromagnetic (AFM)/planar ground state and a FM/FE metastable state, suggesting that it can be used to realize electric field control of magnetism. Our analysis demonstrates that the spin-phonon coupling and metal-metal interaction are two new mechanisms for stabilizing the out-of-plane electric polarization in 2D systems. Our work not only extends the concept of FE to metallic systems, but also paves a new way to search the long-sought high temperature FM-FE multiferroics.

Homophily of Music Listening in Online Social Networks

Homophily, ranging from demographics to sentiments, breeds connections in social networks, either offline or online. However, with the prosperous growth of music streaming service, whether homophily exists in online music listening remains unclear. In this study, two online social networks of a same group of active users are established respectively in Netease Music and Weibo. Through presented multiple similarity measures, it is evidently demonstrated that homophily does exist in music listening of both online social networks. The unexpected music similarity in Weibo also implies that knowledge from generic social networks can be confidently transfered to domain-oriented networks for context enrichment and algorithm enhancement. Comprehensive factors that might function in formation of homophily are further probed and many interesting patterns are profoundly revealed. It is found that female friends are more homogeneous in music listening and positive and energetic songs significantly pull users close. Our methodology and findings would shed lights on realistic applications in online music services.

Coupling of evanescent waves into propagation channels within two-dimensional random waveguides

The transformation from evanescent waves to propagation waves is the key mechanism for the realization of some super-resolution imaging methods. By using the recursive Green function and scattering-matrix theory, we investigated in details on the transport of evanescent waves through a random medium and analyzed quantitatively the coupling of evanescent channels to propagation channels. By numerical calculations, we found that the transmission for the incident evanescent channel is determined by both the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix and the coupling strength to the corresponding propagation channels in random medium, and the disorder strength of the random medium influences both of them.

An agent-based model for emotion contagion and competition in online social media

Recent studies suggest that human emotions diffuse in not only real-world communities but also online social media. More and more mechanisms beyond emotion contagion are revealed, including emotion correlations which indicate their influence and the coupling of emotion diffusion and network structure such as tie strength. Besides, different emotions might even compete in shaping the public opinion. However, a comprehensive model that considers up-to-date findings to replicate the patterns of emotion contagion in online social media is still missing. In this paper, to bridge this vital gap, we propose an agent-based emotion contagion model which combines features of emotion influence and tie strength preference in the dissemination process. The simulation results indicate that anger-dominated users have higher vitality than joy-dominated ones, and anger prefers weaker ties than joy in diffusion, which could make it easier to spread between online groups. Moreover, anger's high influence makes it competitive and easily to dominate the community, especially when negative public events occur. It is also surprisingly revealed that as the ratio of anger approaches joy with a gap less than 10%, angry tweets and users will eventually dominate the online social media and arrives the collective outrage in the cyber space. The critical gap disclosed here can be indeed warning signals at early stages for outrage controlling in online social media. All the parameters of the presented model can be easily estimated from the empirical observations and their values from historical data could help reproduce the emotion contagion of different circumstances. Our model would shed lights on the study of multiple issues like forecasting of emotion contagion in terms of computer simulations.

Diversified Top-k Partial MaxSAT Solving

We introduce a diversified top-k partial MaxSAT problem, a combination of partial MaxSAT problem and enumeration problem. Given a partial MaxSAT formula F and a positive integer k, the diversified top-k partial MaxSAT is to find k maximal solutions for F such that the k maximal solutions satisfy the maximum number of soft clauses of F. This problem can be widely used in many applications including community detection, sensor place, motif discovery, and combinatorial testing. We prove the problem is NP-hard and propose an approach for solving the problem. The concrete idea of the approach is to design an encoding EE which reduces diversified top-k partial MaxSAT problem into partial MaxSAT problem, and then solve the resulting problem with state-of-art solvers. In addition, we present an algorithm MEMKC exactly solving the diversified top-k partial MaxSAT. Through several experiments we show that our approach can be successfully applied to the interesting problem.

Tales of Emotion and Stock in China: Volatility, Causality and Prediction

How the online social media, like Twitter or its variant Weibo, interacts with the stock market and whether it can be a convincing proxy to predict the stock market have been debated for years, especially for China. As the traditional theory in behavioral finance states, the individual emotions can influence decision-makings of investors, it is reasonable to further explore these controversial topics systematically from the perspective of online emotions, which are richly carried by massive tweets in social media. Through thorough studies on over 10 million stock-relevant tweets and 3 million investors from Weibo, it is revealed that inexperienced investors with high emotional volatility are more sensible to the market fluctuations than the experienced or institutional ones, and their dominant occupation also indicates that the Chinese market might be more emotional as compared to its western counterparts. Then both correlation analysis and causality test demonstrate that five attributes of the stock market in China can be competently predicted by various online emotions, like disgust, joy, sadness and fear. Specifically, the presented prediction model significantly outperforms the baseline model, including the one taking purely financial time series as input features, on predicting five attributes of the stock market under the $K$-means discretization. We also employ this prediction model in the scenario of realistic online application and its performance is further testified.
