On the Truncation Error of Numerical Renormalization Group

Using the recently developed exact numerical renormalization group (NRG) method, we analyse the NRG truncation errors $δχ$ of the local magnetic susceptibility and $δF$ of the free energy for the spin-boson model (SBM). We find that for temperatures higher than a crossover temperature $T_{cr}$, as the number of kept states $M$ increases, both errors have oscillations with quasi period $\ln{M}/\ln{N_b}$ and the envelopes decrease as $ε_{tr}=Λ^{-\ln{M}/\ln{N_b}}$ ($N_b$ is the number of boson states used for each bath site). For $T \ll T_{cr}$, they decrease slower than the power law. We extract that $T_{cr} = T^{\ast} ε_{tr}$, with $T^{\ast}$ being the crossover energy scale between the declocalized and the critical fixed points of SBM. The same rule applies to $δχ$ and $δF$ calculated from the full density matrix NRG method and is expected to hold for general impurity models, allowing accurate removal of NRG truncation errors in static quantities at high temperatures.

Spherical Accretion Flow onto General Parameterized Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Spacetimes

The transonic phenomenon of black hole accretion and the existence of the photon sphere are the characteristics of strong gravitational fields near a black hole horizon. In this work, we study spherical accretion flow onto a general parametrized spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes. For this purpose, we analyze the accretion process of various perfect fluids, such as the isothermal fluid of ultra-stiff, ultra-relativistic, and sub-relativistic types and polytropic fluid, respectively. The influences of extra parameters beyond the Schwarzschild black hole in the general parameterized spherically symmetric black hole on the flow behaviors of the above-mentioned test fluids are studied in detail. In addition, by studying the accretion of ideal photon gas, we further discuss the correspondence between the sonic radius of accreting photon gas and the photon sphere for the general parameterized spherically symmetric black hole. Some possible future extensions of our analysis are also discussed.

Born-Infeld Black Holes in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

A novel four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity was formulated by D. Glavan and C. Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)], which is intended to bypass the Lovelock's theorem and to yield a non-trivial contribution to the four-dimensional gravitational dynamics. However, the validity and consistency of this theory has been called into question recently. We study a static and spherically symmetric black hole charged by a Born-Infeld electric field in the novel four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. It is found that the black hole solution still suffers the singularity problem, since particles incident from infinity can reach the singularity. It is also demonstrated that the Born-Infeld charged black hole may be superior to the Maxwell charged black hole to be a charged extension of the Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole in this new gravitational theory. Some basic thermodynamics of the black hole solution is also analyzed. Besides, we regain the black hole solution in the regularized four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity proposed by H. Lü and Y. Pang [arXiv:2003.11552].

Causal intersectionality for fair ranking

In this paper we propose a causal modeling approach to intersectional fairness, and a flexible, task-specific method for computing intersectionally fair rankings. Rankings are used in many contexts, ranging from Web search results to college admissions, but causal inference for fair rankings has received limited attention. Additionally, the growing literature on causal fairness has directed little attention to intersectionality. By bringing these issues together in a formal causal framework we make the application of intersectionality in fair machine learning explicit, connected to important real world effects and domain knowledge, and transparent about technical limitations. We experimentally evaluate our approach on real and synthetic datasets, exploring its behaviour under different structural assumptions.

Strong field induced electron density tide in high harmonic generation from solids

In strong laser fields, the electron density in solids can show up tidal motions caused by the laser ``pulling'' on the electrons, which forms an electron density tide (EDT). However, the strong field processes in solids are always explained by the single-active-electron (SAE) model and the fluctuation of background electrons is neglected previously. Here, we demonstrate the strong field induced EDT effect and propose a model for revealing its role in high harmoinc generation (HHG) from solids. We show that the EDT effect induces an additional polarization current beyond the SAE approximation. It gives a new mechanism for HHG and leads to new anisotropic structures, which are experimentally observed with MgO. Our experiment indicates that the EDT effect becomes more obvious with increasing the laser intensity. Our work establishes the bridge between the HHG and the microscopic EDT in solids induced by the strong laser field, which paves the way to probe the ultrafast electron dynamics.

Toronto-3D: A Large-scale Mobile LiDAR Dataset for Semantic Segmentation of Urban Roadways

Semantic segmentation of large-scale outdoor point clouds is essential for urban scene understanding in various applications, especially autonomous driving and urban high-definition (HD) mapping. With rapid developments of mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems, massive point clouds are available for scene understanding, but publicly accessible large-scale labeled datasets, which are essential for developing learning-based methods, are still limited. This paper introduces Toronto-3D, a large-scale urban outdoor point cloud dataset acquired by a MLS system in Toronto, Canada for semantic segmentation. This dataset covers approximately 1 km of point clouds and consists of about 78.3 million points with 8 labeled object classes. Baseline experiments for semantic segmentation were conducted and the results confirmed the capability of this dataset to train deep learning models effectively. Toronto-3D is released to encourage new research, and the labels will be improved and updated with feedback from the research community.

Universal thermodynamic relations with constant corrections for rotating AdS black holes

In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 101103 (2020)], a universal relation between corrections to entropy and extremality was proposed. The relation was also found to exactly hold for the four-dimensional charged AdS black hole. In this paper, we extend the study to the rotating BTZ and Kerr-AdS black holes when a constant correction to General Relativity is considered for the first time. The entropy and extremality bound are calculated, and they have a closely dependent behavior with the coupling parameter of the constant correction. We confirm the universal relation for the rotating AdS black holes. Furthermore, taking into consideration of the shift of the angular momentum, we confirm one more new universal relation for the rotating cases. In particular, we state a conjecture on a universal relation, which gives a universal conjecture relation between the shifted thermodynamic quantities for arbitrary black hole background. We believe that these universal relations will shed new light on the region of the quantum gravity.

VI3: a 2D Ising ferromagnet

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are of great current interest for their promising applications in spintronics. Here we propose the van der Waals (vdW) material VI3 to be a 2D Ising ferromagnet (FM), using density functional calculations, crystal field level diagrams, superexchange model analyses, and Monte Carlo simulations. The $a_{1g}$$^1$$e'_{-}$$^1$ ground state in the trigonal crystal field gives rise to the 2D Ising FM due to a significant single ion anisotropy (SIA) and enhanced FM superexchange both associated with the $S_z$=1 and $L_z$=--1 state of V3+ ions. We find that a tensile strain on the VI3 monolayer further stabilizes the $a_{1g}$$^1$$e'_{-}$$^1$ ground state, and its Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$) would increase from 70 K to 90-110 K under a 2.5-5\% tensile strain. Moreover, we suggest a group of spin-orbital states with a strong SIA which may help to search more 2D Ising magnets.

Fermion Localization and Degenerate Resonances on Brane Array

In this work, we consider the multi-wall braneworld arisen from multi-scalar fields, and investigate the localization and resonances of spin-1/2 fermion on the multi-walls. We build two analytic multi-wall solutions with a polynomial superpotential and a modified sine-Gordon superpotential respectively. The massless fermion is the only bound state and localized between the two outermost sub-branes. The factors affecting the number of massive resonant fermions are analyzed. What interesting is that all the fermion resonant states are non-degenerate for the cases of single- and two-walls, however, doubly-degenerate fermion resonant states emerge for the cases of three- and four-walls. This novel phenomenon could be potentially interesting in phenomenology.

A Comprehensive Survey on Hybrid Communication for Internet of Nano-Things in Context of Body-Centric Communications

With the huge advancement of nanotechnology over the past years, the devices are shrinking into micro-scale, even nano-scale. Additionally, the Internet of nano-things (IoNTs) are generally regarded as the ultimate formation of the current sensor networks and the development of nanonetworks would be of great help to its fulfilment, which would be ubiquitous with numerous applications in all domains of life. However, the communication between the devices in such nanonetworks is still an open problem. Body-centric nanonetworks are believed to play an essential role in the practical application of IoNTs. BCNNs are also considered as domain specific like wireless sensor networks and always deployed on purpose to support a particular application. In these networks, electromagnetic and molecular communications are widely considered as two main promising paradigms and both follow their own development process. In this survey, the recent developments of these two paradigms are first illustrated in the aspects of applications, network structures, modulation techniques, coding techniques and security to then investigate the potential of hybrid communication paradigms. Meanwhile, the enabling technologies have been presented to apprehend the state-of-art with the discussion on the possibility of the hybrid technologies. Additionally, the inter-connectivity of electromagnetic and molecular body-centric nanonetworks is discussed. Afterwards, the related security issues of the proposed networks are discussed. Finally, the challenges and open research directions are presented.

Towards Precise End-to-end Weakly Supervised Object Detection Network

It is challenging for weakly supervised object detection network to precisely predict the positions of the objects, since there are no instance-level category annotations. Most existing methods tend to solve this problem by using a two-phase learning procedure, i.e., multiple instance learning detector followed by a fully supervised learning detector with bounding-box regression. Based on our observation, this procedure may lead to local minima for some object categories. In this paper, we propose to jointly train the two phases in an end-to-end manner to tackle this problem. Specifically, we design a single network with both multiple instance learning and bounding-box regression branches that share the same backbone. Meanwhile, a guided attention module using classification loss is added to the backbone for effectively extracting the implicit location information in the features. Experimental results on public datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Hall coefficient diagnostics of surface state in pressurized SmB6

In this study, we report the first results of the high-pressure Hall coefficient (RH) measurements in the putative topological Kondo insulator SmB6 up to 37 GPa. Below 10 GPa, our data reveal that RH(T) exhibits a prominent peak upon cooling below 20 K. Remarkably, the temperature at which surface conduction dominates coincides with the temperature of the peak in RH(T). The temperature dependent resistance and Hall coefficient can be well fitted by a two-channel model with contributions from the metallic surface and the thermally activated bulk states. When the bulk of SmB6 becomes metallic and magnetic at ~ 10 GPa, both the RH(T) peak and the resistance plateau disappear simultaneously. Our results indicate that the RH(T) peak is a fingerprint to diagnose the presence of a metallic surface state in SmB6. The high-pressure magnetic state of SmB6 is robust to 180 GPa, and no evidence of superconductivity is observed in the metallic phase.

Tensor stability in Born-Infeld determinantal gravity

We consider the transverse-traceless tensor perturbation of a spatial flat homogeneous and isotropic spacetime in Born-Infeld determinantal gravity, and investigate the evolution of the tensor mode for two solutions in the early universe. For the first solution where the initial singularity is replaced by a regular geometric de Sitter inflation of infinite duration, the evolution of the tensor mode is stable for the parameter spaces $α<-1$, $ω\geq-1/3$ and $α=-1$, $ω>0$. For the second solution where the initial singularity is replaced by a primordial brusque bounce, which suffers a sudden singularity at the bouncing point, the evolution of the tensor mode is stable for all regions of the parameter space. Our calculation suggests that the tensor evolution can hold stability in large parameter spaces, which is a remarkable property of Born-Infeld determinantal gravity. We also constrain the theoretical parameter $|λ|\geq 10^{-38} \text{m}^{-2}$ by resorting to the current bound on the speed of the gravitational waves.

Crossover from two-dimensional to three-dimensional superconducting states in bismuth-based cuprate superconductor

To decipher the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity, it is important to know how the superconducting pairing emerges from the unusual normal states of cuprate superconductors, including pseudogap, anomalous Fermi liquid and strange metal (SM). A long-standing issue under debate is how the superconducting pairing is formed and condensed in the SM phase because the superconducting transition temperature is the highest in this phase. Here, we report the first experimental observation of a pressure-induced crossover from two- to three-dimensional superconducting states in the optimally-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta bulk superconductor at a pressure above 2.8 GPa, through state-of-the-art in-situ high-pressure measurements of resistance, magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibility. By analyzing the temperature dependence of resistance, we find that the two-dimensional (2D) superconducting transition exhibits a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like behavior. The emergence of this 2D superconducting transition provides direct and strong evidence that the SM state is predominantly 2D-like. This is important to a thorough understanding of the phase diagram of cuprate superconductors.

Balanced Ranking with Diversity Constraints

Many set selection and ranking algorithms have recently been enhanced with diversity constraints that aim to explicitly increase representation of historically disadvantaged populations, or to improve the overall representativeness of the selected set. An unintended consequence of these constraints, however, is reduced in-group fairness: the selected candidates from a given group may not be the best ones, and this unfairness may not be well-balanced across groups. In this paper we study this phenomenon using datasets that comprise multiple sensitive attributes. We then introduce additional constraints, aimed at balancing the \in-group fairness across groups, and formalize the induced optimization problems as integer linear programs. Using these programs, we conduct an experimental evaluation with real datasets, and quantify the feasible trade-offs between balance and overall performance in the presence of diversity constraints.

Constraints on generalized Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld branes

The Palatini $f(|\hatΩ|)$ gravity is a generalized theory of the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity, where $Ω_{~N}^{K}\equivδ_{~N}^{K}+bg^{KL}R_{LN}(Γ)$ is an auxiliary tensor constructed with the spacetime metric $g$ and independent connection $Γ$. In this paper, we study $f(|\hatΩ|)$ theory with $f(|\hatΩ|)=|\hatΩ|^{\frac{1}{2}+n}$ in the thick brane scenario and give some constraints on the brane model. We finally found an analytic solution of the thick brane generated by a single scalar field. The behavior of the negative energy density denotes the localization of the thick brane at the origin of the extra dimension. In our braneworld, the warp factor is divergent at the boundary of the extra dimension while the brane system is asymptotically anti$-$de Sitter. It is shown that the tensor perturbation of the brane is stable and the massless graviton is localized on the thick brane. Therefore, the effective Einstein-Hilbert action on the brane can be rebuilt in the low-energy approximation. According to the recent test of the gravitational inverse-square law, we give some constraints on the $f(|\hatΩ|)$ brane.

Contrasting magnetism in isovalent layered LaSr3NiRuO4H4 and LaSrNiRuO4 due to distinct spin-orbital states

The recently synthesized first 4d transition-metal oxide-hydride LaSr3NiRuO4H4 with the unusual high H:O ratio surprisingly displays no magnetic order down to 1.8 K. This is in sharp contrast to the similar unusual low-valent Ni+ - Ru2+ layered oxide LaSrNiRuO4 which has a rather high ferromagnetic (FM) ordering Curie temperature TC about 250 K. In this work, using density functional calculations with aid of crystal field level diagrams and superexchange pictures, we find that the contrasting magnetism is due to the distinct spin-orbital states of the Ru2+ ions (in addition to the common Ni+ S=1/2 state but with a different orbital state): the Ru2+ S=0 state in LaSr3NiRuO4H4, but the Ru2+ S=1 state in LaSrNiRuO4. The Ru2+ S=0 state has the (xy)2(xz; yz)4 occupation due to the RuH4O2 octahedral coordination, and then the nonmagnetic Ru2+ ions dilute the S=1/2 Ni+ sublattice which consequently has a very weak antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange and thus accounts for no presence of magnetic order down to 1.8 K in LaSr3NiRuO4H4. In strong contrast, the Ru2+ S=1 state in LaSrNiRuO4 has the (3z2-r2)2(xz; yz)3(xy)1 occupation due to the planar square RuO4 coordination, and then the multi-orbital FM superexchange between the S=1/2 Ni+ and S=1 Ru2+ ions gives rise to the high TC in LaSrNiRuO4. This work highlights the importance of spin-orbital states in determining the distinct magnetism.

IF-TTN: Information Fused Temporal Transformation Network for Video Action Recognition

Effective spatiotemporal feature representation is crucial to the video-based action recognition task. Focusing on discriminate spatiotemporal feature learning, we propose Information Fused Temporal Transformation Network (IF-TTN) for action recognition on top of popular Temporal Segment Network (TSN) framework. In the network, Information Fusion Module (IFM) is designed to fuse the appearance and motion features at multiple ConvNet levels for each video snippet, forming a short-term video descriptor. With fused features as inputs, Temporal Transformation Networks (TTN) are employed to model middle-term temporal transformation between the neighboring snippets following a sequential order. As TSN itself depicts long-term temporal structure by segmental consensus, the proposed network comprehensively considers multiple granularity temporal features. Our IF-TTN achieves the state-of-the-art results on two most popular action recognition datasets: UCF101 and HMDB51. Empirical investigation reveals that our architecture is robust to the input motion map quality. Replacing optical flow with the motion vectors from compressed video stream, the performance is still comparable to the flow-based methods while the testing speed is 10x faster.
