Zak-OTFS ISAC with Bistatic Sensing via Semi-Blind Atomic Norm Denoising Scheme

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) through Zak-transform-based orthogonal time frequency space (Zak-OTFS) modulation is a promising solution for high-mobility scenarios. Realizing accurate bistatic sensing and robust communication necessitates precise channel estimation; however, this remains a formidable challenge in doubly dispersive environments, where fractional delay-Doppler shifts induce severe channel spreading. This paper proposes a semi-blind atomic norm denoising scheme for Zak-OTFS ISAC with bistatic sensing. We first derive the discrete-time input-output (I/O) relationship of Zak-OTFS under fractional delay-Doppler shifts and rectangular windowing. Based on this I/O relation, we formulate the joint channel parameter estimation and data detection task as an atomic norm denoising problem, utilizing the negative square penalty method to handle the non-convex discrete constellation constraints. To solve this problem efficiently, we develop an accelerated iterative algorithm that integrates majorization-minimization, accelerated projected gradient, and inexact accelerated proximal gradient methods. We provide a rigorous convergence proof for the proposed algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves super-resolution sensing accuracy and communication performance approaching the perfect channel state information lower bound.

Progressive Online Video Understanding with Evidence-Aligned Timing and Transparent Decisions

Visual agents operating in the wild must respond to queries precisely when sufficient evidence first appears in a video stream, a critical capability that is overlooked by conventional video LLMs evaluated in offline settings. The shift to an online, streaming paradigm introduces significant challenges: a lack of decision transparency, the difficulty of aligning response timing with visual evidence, and the need to maintain a global, causally consistent understanding under tight computational budgets. To address these issues, we propose a novel framework that decouples reasoning control from memory integration. We introduce \textbf{\model{}}, an instantiation of this framework with two core components. First, the \emph{Active Thinking Decision Maker (ATDM)} is a transparent reasoning controller that externalizes its decision process using observable progress ($\boldsymbolρ$) and confidence ($\boldsymbol{c}$) metrics. This allows it to precisely time its response $t_r$ to match the first-sufficient-evidence timestamp $t^\star$ while streaming its reasoning to the user. Second, the \emph{Hierarchical Progressive Semantic Integration (HPSI)} module acts as an efficient memory system. It employs a set of learnable, multi-level aggregation tokens that are propagated across clips to build a rich, global cognitive state without exceeding token budgets. %Our approach sets a new standard on key online video understanding benchmarks, achieving strong performance of \textbf{71.6\%} on StreamingBench and \textbf{46.9\%} on OVOBench, demonstrating a robust solution for evidence-aligned and transparent online video analysis. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of ATDM and HPSI, e.g., Thinking-QwenVL improves the accuracy of the previous state-of-the-art from 67.63\% to 71.60\% on the StreamingBench benchmark.

GeoSense: Internalizing Geometric Necessity Perception for Multimodal Reasoning

Advancing towards artificial superintelligence requires rich and intelligent perceptual capabilities. A critical frontier in this pursuit is overcoming the limited spatial understanding of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), where geometry information is essential. Existing methods often address this by rigidly injecting geometric signals into every input, while ignoring their necessity and adding computation overhead. Contrary to this paradigm, our framework endows the model with an awareness of perceptual insufficiency, empowering it to autonomously engage geometric features in reasoning when 2D cues are deemed insufficient. To achieve this, we first introduce an independent geometry input channel to the model architecture and conduct alignment training, enabling the effective utilization of geometric features. Subsequently, to endow the model with perceptual awareness, we curate a dedicated spatial-aware supervised fine-tuning dataset. This serves to activate the model's latent internal cues, empowering it to autonomously determine the necessity of geometric information. Experiments across multiple spatial reasoning benchmarks validate this approach, demonstrating significant spatial gains without compromising 2D visual reasoning capabilities, offering a path toward more robust, efficient and self-aware multi-modal intelligence.

Pulse Shaping Filter Design for Zak-OTFS

The Zak-transform-based Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (Zak-OTFS), offers a robust framework for high-mobility communications by simplifying the input-output (I/O) relation to a twisted convolution. While this structure theoretically enables accurate channel estimation by sampling the response from one pilot symbol, practical implementation is constrained by the spreading of effective channel response induced by pulse shaping filters. To address this, we first derive the I/O relationship for discrete-time oversampled Zak-OTFS, which closely approximates the continuous-time system and facilitates analysis and numerical simulation. We show that every delay-Doppler domain symbol undergoes the same effective channel response under the discrete oversampled Zak-OTFS. We then analyze the impact of window ambiguity functions, and reveal that high sidelobes lead to wide channel spreading and degrade estimation accuracy. Building on this insight, we propose a novel pulse shaping filter design that synthesizes Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (PSWFs) within the Isotropic Orthogonal Transform Algorithm (IOTA) framework. Numerical simulations confirm that the proposed design achieves superior channel estimation accuracy and bit error rate (BER) performance compared to conventional root-raised-cosine and rectangular windowing schemes in the high-SNR regime.

Dynamic Heuristic Neuromorphic Solver for the Edge User Allocation Problem with Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network

We propose a neuromorphic solver for the NP-hard Edge User Allocation problem using an attractor network with Winner-Takes-All (WTA) mechanism implemented with the Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) framework. Unlike previous energy-based attractor networks, our solver uses dynamic heuristic biasing to guide allocations in real time and introduces a "no allocation" state to each WTA motif, achieving near-optimal performance with an empirically upper-bounded number of time steps. The approach is compatible with neuromorphic architectures and may offer improvements in energy efficiency.

Joint Design of Radar Receive Filter and Unimodular ISAC Waveform with Sidelobe Level Control

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been considered a key feature of next-generation wireless networks. This paper investigates the joint design of the radar receive filter and dual-functional transmit waveform for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ISAC system. While optimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the radar receive spatial response and maximizing the achievable rate at the communication receiver, besides the constraints of full-power radar receiving filter and unimodular transmit sequence, we control the maximum range sidelobe level, which is often overlooked in existing ISAC waveform design literature, for better radar imaging performance. To solve the formulated optimization problem with convex and nonconvex constraints, we propose an inexact augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) algorithm. For each subproblem in the proposed inexact ALM algorithm, we custom-design a block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) scheme with closed-form solutions for all blocks of variable to enhance the computational efficiency. Convergence analysis shows that the proposed algorithm is guaranteed to provide a stationary and feasible solution. Extensive simulations are performed to investigate the impact of different system parameters on communication and radar imaging performance. Comparison with the existing works shows the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Low-Complexity Minimum BER Precoder Design for ISAC Systems: A Delay-Doppler Perspective

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is anticipated to be a promising candidate for supporting integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems, which is considered as a pivotal technique for realizing next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we develop a minimum bit error rate (BER) precoder design for an OTFS-based ISAC system. In particular, the BER minimization problem takes into account the maximum available transmission power budget and the required sensing performance. Different from prior studies that considered ISAC in the time-frequency (TF) domain, we devise the precoder from the perspective of the delay-Doppler (DD) domain by exploiting the equivalent DD domain channel due to the fact that the DD domain channel generally tends to be sparse and quasi-static, which can facilitate a low-overhead ISAC system design. To address the non-convex optimization design problem, we resort to optimizing the lower bound of the derived average BER by adopting Jensen's inequality. Subsequently, the formulated problem is decoupled into two independent sub-problems via singular value decomposition (SVD) methodology. We then theoretically analyze the feasibility conditions of the proposed problem and present a low-complexity iterative solution via leveraging the Lagrangian duality approach. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed precoder compared to the benchmark schemes and reveal the interplay between sensing and communication for dual-functional precoder design, indicating a trade-off where transmission efficiency is sacrificed for increasing transmission reliability and sensing accuracy.

Dual-Functional Waveform Design with Local Sidelobe Suppression via OTFS Signaling

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a key technology in future wireless networks. One of the main challenges in realizing ISAC is developing dual-functional waveforms that can communicate with communication receivers and perform radar sensing simultaneously. In this paper, we consider the joint design of a dual-functional orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) signal and a receiving filter for the ISAC system. The problem of ISAC waveform design is formulated as the minimization of the weighted integrated sidelobe level (WISL) of the ambiguity function and the interference term from ISAC waveform, with constraints on signal-to-noise ratio loss. The majorization-minimization algorithm combined with alternating iterative minimization is implemented to solve the optimization problem. Simulation results show that the WISL and the interference term can be significantly decreased to guarantee achievable data rates and detection performance.

It is anticipated that integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) would be one of the key enablers of next-generation wireless networks (such as beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G) for supporting a variety of emerging applications. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent advances in ISAC systems, with a particular focus on their foundations, system design, networking aspects and ISAC applications. Furthermore, we discuss the corresponding open questions of the above that emerged in each issue. Hence, we commence with the information theory of sensing and communications (S$\&$C), followed by the information-theoretic limits of ISAC systems by shedding light on the fundamental performance metrics. Next, we discuss their clock synchronization and phase offset problems, the associated Pareto-optimal signaling strategies, as well as the associated super-resolution ISAC system design. Moreover, we envision that ISAC ushers in a paradigm shift for the future cellular networks relying on network sensing, transforming the classic cellular architecture, cross-layer resource management methods, and transmission protocols. In ISAC applications, we further highlight the security and privacy issues of wireless sensing. Finally, we close by studying the recent advances in a representative ISAC use case, namely the multi-object multi-task (MOMT) recognition problem using wireless signals.

Identification of Carbon Stars from LAMOST DR7

Carbon stars are excellent kinematic tracers of galaxies and play important roles in understanding the evolution of the Galaxy. Therefore, it is worthwhile to search for them in a large amount of spectra. In this work, we build a new carbon star catalog based on the LAMOST DR7 spectra. The catalog contains 4542 spectra of 3546 carbon stars, identified through line index and near-infrared color-color diagrams. Through visual inspection of the spectra, we further subclassify them into 925 C--H, 384 C--R, 608 C--N, and 1292 Ba stars. However, 437 stars could not be sub-classified due to their low signal-to-noise. Moreover, by comparing with LAMOST DR7 pipeline we find 567 more carbon stars and visually sub-classify them. We find that on the $J-H$ vs. $H-K_{\rm s}$ two-color diagram, C--N stars can be reliably distinguished from the other three sub-types. Additionally, by utilizing the Gaia distance, we study the distribution of carbon stars in the H-R diagram and identify 258 dwarf carbon stars by the criterion $M_{\rm G}>$5.0\,mag. Finally, we present the spatial distribution in Galactic coordinates of the 3546 carbon stars. The majority of C-N, C-R, and Ba stars are distributed at low Galactic latitudes, while most C--H and dC stars distribute at high Galactic latitudes.

Radar Sensing via OTFS Signaling: A Delay Doppler Signal Processing Perspective

The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation multiplexes data symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. Since the range and velocity, which can be derived from the delay and Doppler shifts, are the parameters of interest for radar sensing, it is natural to consider implementing DD signal processing for radar sensing. In this paper, we investigate the potential connections between the OTFS and DD domain radar signal processing. Our analysis shows that the range-Doppler matrix computing process in radar sensing is exactly the demodulation of OTFS with a rectangular pulse shaping filter. Furthermore, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) correlation-based algorithm to estimate the fractional delay and Doppler parameters for radar sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently obtain the delay and Doppler shifts associated with multiple targets.

Radar Sensing via OTFS Signaling

By multiplexing information symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising candidate for future wireless communication in high-mobility scenarios. In addition to the superior communication performance, OTFS is also a natural choice for radar sensing since the primary parameters (range and velocity of targets) in radar signal processing can be inferred directly from the delay and Doppler shifts. Though there are several works on OTFS radar sensing, most of them consider the integer parameter estimation only, while the delay and Doppler shifts are usually fractional in the real world. In this paper, we propose a two-step method to estimate the fractional delay and Doppler shifts. We first perform the two-dimensional (2D) correlation between the received and transmitted DD domain symbols to obtain the integer parts of the parameters. Then a difference-based method is implemented to estimate the fractional parts of delay and Doppler indices. Meanwhile, we implement a target detection method based on a generalized likelihood ratio test since the number of potential targets in the sensing scenario is usually unknown. The simulation results show that the proposed method can obtain the delay and Doppler shifts accurately and get the number of sensing targets with a high detection probability.

Secrecy-Optimized Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communication Underlaying Heterogeneous Networks

Device-to-device (D2D) communications recently have attracted much attention for its potential capability to improve spectral efficiency underlaying the existing heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Due to no sophisticated control, D2D user equipments (DUEs) themselves cannot resist eavesdropping or security attacks. It is urgent to maximize the secure capacity for both cellular users and DUEs. This paper formulates the radio resource allocation problem to maximize the secure capacity of DUEs for the D2D communication underlaying HetNets which consist of high power nodes and low power nodes. The optimization objective function with transmit bit rate and power constraints, which is non-convex and hard to be directly derived, is firstly transformed into matrix form. Then the equivalent convex form of the optimization problem is derived according to the Perron-Frobenius theory. A heuristic iterative algorithm based on the proximal theory is proposed to solve this equivalent convex problem through evaluating the proximal operator of Lagrange function. Numerical results show that the proposed radio resource allocation solution significantly improves the secure capacity with a fast convergence speed.

Energy-Efficient Resource Assignment and Power Allocation in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

Taking full advantages of both heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and cloud access radio access networks (CRANs), heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) are presented to enhance both the spectral and energy efficiencies, where remote radio heads (RRHs) are mainly used to provide high data rates for users with high quality of service (QoS) requirements, while the high power node (HPN) is deployed to guarantee the seamless coverage and serve users with low QoS requirements. To mitigate the inter-tier interference and improve EE performances in H-CRANs, characterizing user association with RRH/HPN is considered in this paper, and the traditional soft fractional frequency reuse (S-FFR) is enhanced. Based on the RRH/HPN association constraint and the enhanced S-FFR, an energy-efficient optimization problem with the resource assignment and power allocation for the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based H-CRANs is formulated as a non-convex objective function. To deal with the non-convexity, an equivalent convex feasibility problem is reformulated, and closedform expressions for the energy-efficient resource allocation solution to jointly allocate the resource block and transmit power are derived by the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Simulation results confirm that the H-CRAN architecture and the corresponding resource allocation solution can enhance the energy efficiency significantly.
