Affine geometry and Frobenius algebra

The associativity of the multiplication on a Frobenius manifold is equivalent to the WDVV equation of a symmetric cubic form in flat coordinates. Frobenius manifold could be regarded a very special type of statistical manifold. There is a natural commutative product on each tangent space of a statistical manifold. We show that it is associative, hence making it into a manifold with Frobenius algebra structure, if and only if the sectional $K$-curvature vanishes. In other words, WDVV equation is equivalent to zero sectional $K$-curvature. This gives a curvature interpretation for WDVV equation.

Cubic forms, anomaly cancellation and modularity

Motivated by the cubic forms and anomaly cancellation formulas of Witten-Freed-Hopkins, we give some new cubic forms on spin, spin$^c$, spin$^{w_2}$ and orientable 12-manifolds respectively. We relate them to $η$-invariants when the manifolds are with boundary, and mod 2 indices on 10 dimensional characteristic submanifolds when the manifolds are spin$^c$ or spin$^{w_2}$. Our method of producing these cubic forms is a combination of (generalized) Witten classes and the character of the basic representation of affine $E_8$.

Complex Finsler vector bundles with positive Kobayashi curvature

In this short note, we prove that a complex Finsler vector bundle with positive Kobayashi curvature must be ample, which partially solves a problem of S. Kobayashi posed in 1975. As applications, a strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler manifold with positive Kobayashi curvature must be biholomorphic to the complex projective space; we also show that all Schur polynomials are numerically positive for complex Finsler vector bundles with positive Kobayashi curvature.

Harmonic 2-forms and positively curved 4-manifolds

We prove that if a compact Riemannian 4-manifold with positive sectional curvature satisfies a Kato type inequality, then it is definite. We also discuss some new insights for compact Riemannian 4-manifolds of positive sectional curvature.

Geometry of logarithmic forms and deformations of complex structures

We present a new method to solve certain $\bar{\partial}$-equations for logarithmic differential forms by using harmonic integral theory for currents on Kahler manifolds. The result can be considered as a $\bar{\partial}$-lemma for logarithmic forms. As applications, we generalize the result of Deligne about closedness of logarithmic forms, give geometric and simpler proofs of Deligne's degeneracy theorem for the logarithmic Hodge to de Rham spectral sequences at $E_1$-level, as well as certain injectivity theorem on compact Kahler manifolds. Furthermore, for a family of logarithmic deformations of complex structures on Kahler manifolds, we construct the extension for any logarithmic $(n,q)$-form on the central fiber and thus deduce the local stability of log Calabi-Yau structure by extending an iteration method to the logarithmic forms. Finally we prove the unobstructedness of the deformations of a log Calabi-Yau pair and a pair on a Calabi-Yau manifold by differential geometric method.

Geodesic-Einstein metrics and nonlinear stabilities

In this paper, we introduce notions of nonlinear stabilities for a relative ample line bundle over a holomorphic fibration and define the notion of a geodesic-Einstein metric on this line bundle, which generalize the classical stabilities and Hermitian-Einstein metrics of holomorphic vector bundles. We introduce a Donaldson type functional and show that this functional attains its absolute minimum at geodesic-Einstein metrics, and we also discuss the relations between the existence of geodesic-Einstein metrics and the nonlinear stabilities of the line bundle. As an application, we will prove that a holomorphic vector bundle admits a Finsler-Einstein metric if and only if it admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric, which answers a problem posed by S. Kobayashi.

On positive scalar curvature and moduli of curves

In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichmüller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichmüller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Chern forms of holomorphic Finsler vector bundles and some applications

In this paper, we present two kinds of total Chern forms $c(E,G)$ and $\mathcal{C}(E,G)$ as well as a total Segre form $s(E,G)$ of a holomorphic Finsler vector bundle $π:(E,G)\to M$ expressed by the Finsler metric $G$, which answers a question of J. Faran (\cite{Faran}) to some extent. As some applications, we show that the signed Segre forms $(-1)^ks_k(E,G)$ are positive $(k,k)$-forms on $M$ when $G$ is of positive Kobayashi curvature; we prove, under an extra assumption, that a Finsler-Einstein vector bundle in the sense of Kobayashi is semi-stable; we introduce a new definition of a flat Finsler metric, which is weaker than Aikou's one (\cite{Aikou}) and prove that a holomorphic vector bundle is Finsler flat in our sense if and only if it is Hermitian flat.

A Donaldson type functional on a holomorphic Finsler vector bundle

In this paper, we solve a problem of Kobayashi posed in \cite{Ko4} by introducing a Donaldson type functional on the space $F^+(E)$ of strongly pseudo-convex complex Finsler metrics on $E$ -- a holomorphic vector bundle over a closed Kähler manifold $M$. This Donaldson type functional is a generalization in the complex Finsler geometry setting of the original Donaldson functional and has Finsler-Einstein metrics on $E$ as its only critical points, at which this functional attains the absolute minimum.

Remarks on BCOV invariants and degenerations of Calabi-Yau manifolds

For a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau threefolds, Green, Griffiths and Kerr have expressed the total singularities in terms of the degrees of Hodge bundles and Euler number of the general fiber. In this paper, we show that the total singularities can be expressed by the sum of asymptotic values of BCOV invariants, studied by Fang, Lu and Yoshikawa. On the other hand, by using Yau's Schwarz lemma, we prove Arakelov type inequalities and Euler number bound for Calabi-Yau family over a compact Riemann surface.

Solving equations with Hodge theory

We treat two quite different problems related to changes of complex structures on Kähler manifolds by using global geometric method. First, by using operators from Hodge theory on compact Kähler manifold, we present a closed explicit extension formula for holomorphic canonical forms in different complex structures. As applications, we give a closed explicit formula for certain canonical sections of Hodge bundles on marked and polarized moduli spaces of projective manifolds, and provide a closed explicit extension formula for holomorphic pluricanonical forms under certain natural conditions. Second, by using the operators in $L^2$-Hodge theory on Poincaré disk, we present a simple and unified method to solve the Beltrami equations with measurable coefficients for quasi-conformal maps.

Minimal complex surfaces with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics

This is a continuation of our previous paper [14]. In [14], we introduced the first Aeppli-Chern class on compact complex manifolds, and proved that the $(1,1)$ curvature form of the Levi-Civita connection represents the first Aeppli-Chern class which is a natural link between Riemannian geometry and complex geometry. In this paper, we study the geometry of compact complex manifolds with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics and classify minimal complex surfaces with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. More precisely, we show that minimal complex surfaces admitting Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics are Kähler Calabi-Yau surfaces and Hopf surfaces.

Heat kernel coefficients on Kahler manifolds

Polterovich proved a remarkable closed formula for heat kernel coefficients of the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds involving powers of Laplacians acting on the distance function. In the case of Kähler manifolds, we prove a combinatorial formula for powers of the complex Laplacian and use it to derive an explicit graph theoretic formula for the numerics in heat coefficients as a linear combination of metric jets based on Polterovich's formula.
