Quantum Oscillations in the Anomalous Spin Density Wave State of FeAs

Quantum oscillations in the binary antiferromagnetic metal FeAs are presented and compared to theoretical predictions for the electronic band structure in the anomalous spin density wave state of this material. Demonstrating a new method for growing single crystals out of Bi flux, we utilize the highest quality FeAs to perform torque magnetometry experiments up to 35 T, using rotations of field angle in two planes to provide evidence for one electron and one hole band in the magnetically ordered state. The resulting picture agrees with previous experimental evidence for multiple carriers at low temperatures, but the exact Fermi surface shape differs from predictions, suggesting that correlations play a role in deviation from ab initio theory and cause up to a four-fold enhancement in the effective carrier mass.

Interlayer electronic transport in CaMnBi$_{2}$ antiferromagnet

We report interlayer electronic transport in CaMnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Quantum oscillations and angular magnetoresistance suggest coherent electronic conduction and valley polarized conduction of Dirac states. Small cyclotron mass, large mobility of carriers and nontrivial Berry's phase are consistent with the presence of Dirac fermions on the side wall of the warped cylindrical Fermi surface. Similar to SrMnBi$_{2}$ that features an anisotropic Dirac cone, our results suggest that magnetic field-induced changes in the interlayer conduction are also present in layered bismuth-based materials with zero-energy line in momentum space created by the staggered alkaline earth atoms.

Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_{x}$

Charge density wave (CDW), the periodic modulation of the electronic charge density, will open a gap on the Fermi surface that commonly leads to decreased or vanishing conductivity. On the other hand superconductivity, a commonly believed competing order, features a Fermi surface gap that results in infinite conductivity. Here we report that superconductivity emerges upon Se doping in CDW conductor ZrTe$_{3}$ when the long range CDW order is gradually suppressed. Superconducting critical temperature $T_c(x)$ in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ (${0\leq}x\leq0.1$) increases up to 4 K plateau for $0.04$$\leq$$x$$\leq$$0.07$. Further increase in Se content results in diminishing $T_{c}$ and filametary superconductivity. The CDW modes from Raman spectra are observed in $x$ = 0.04 and 0.1 crystals, where signature of ZrTe$_{3}$ CDW order in resistivity vanishes. The electronic-scattering for high $T_{c}$ crystals is dominated by local CDW fluctuations at high temperures, the resistivity is linear up to highest measured $T=300K$ and contributes to substantial in-plane anisotropy.

Enhancement of the thermoelectric properties in doped FeSb$_2$ bulk crystals

Kondo insulator FeSb$_2$ with large Seebeck coefficient would have potential in thermoelectric applications in cryogenic temperature range if it had not been for large thermal conductivity $κ$. Here we studied the influence of different chemical substitutions at Fe and Sb site on thermal conductivity and thermoelectric effect in high quality single crystals. At $5\%$ of Te doping at Sb site thermal conductivity is suppressed from $\sim 250$ W/Km in undoped sample to about 8 W/Km. However, Cr and Co doping at Fe site suppresses thermal conductivity more slowly than Te doping, and even at 20$\%$ Cr/Co doping the thermal conductivity remains $\sim 30$ W/Km. The analysis of different contributions to phonon scattering indicates that the giant suppression of $κ$ with Te is due to the enhanced point defect scattering originating from the strain field fluctuations. In contrast, Te-doping has small influence on the correlation effects and then for small Te substitution the large magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient is still preserved, leading to the enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit ($ZT\sim 0.05$ at $\sim 100$ K) in Fe(Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_{0.1}$)$_2$.

Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$: A weakly correlated nodeless superconductor

We report detailed Seebeck coefficient, Hall resistivity as well as specific heat measurement on Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ single crystals. The Seebeck coefficient exhibits a peak corresponding to the anomaly in resistivity at $T^*$, and the carrier density is suppressed significantly below $T^*$. This indicates a significant Fermi surface reconstruction and the opening of the charge density wave gap at the supperlattice transition. The magnetic field induced enhancement of the residual specific heat coefficient $γ(H)$ exhibits a nearly linear dependence on magnetic field, indicating a nodeless gap. In the temperature range close to $T_c$ the Seebeck coefficient can be described well by the diffusion model. The zero-temperature extrapolated thermoelectric power is very small, implying large normalized Fermi temperature. Consequently the ratio $\frac{T_c}{T_F}$ is very small. Our results indicate that Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is a weakly correlated nodeless superconductor.

Multiband effects and the possible Dirac states in LaAgSb$_2$

Here we report the possible signature of Dirac fermions in the magnetoresistance, Hall resistivity and magnetothermopower of LaAgSb$_2$. The opposite sign between Hall resistivity and Seebeck coefficient indicates the multiband effect. Electronic structure calculation reveals the existence of the linear bands and the parabolic bands crossing the Fermi level. The large linear magnetoresistance was attributed to the quantum limit of the possible Dirac fermions or the breakdown of weak-field magnetotransport at the charge density wave phase transition. Analysis of Hall resistivity using two-band model reveals that Dirac holes which dominate the electronic transport have much higher mobility and larger density than conventional electrons. Magnetic field suppresses the apparent Hall carrier density, and also induces the sign change of the Seebeck coefficient from negative to positive. These effects are possibly attributed to the magnetic field suppression of the density of states at the Fermi level originating from the quantum limit of the possible Dirac holes.

Insulating and metallic spin glass in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-δ-y}$Ni$_{y}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $y$ $\leq$ 1.44) single crystals

We report electron doping effects by Ni in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-δ-y}$Ni$_{y}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $y$ $\leq$ 1.44) single crystal alloys. A rich ground state phase diagram is observed. Small amount of Ni ($\sim$ 4\%) suppressed superconductivity below 1.8 K, inducing insulating spin glass magnetic ground state for higher Ni content. With further Ni substitution, metallic resistivity is restored. For high Ni concentration in the lattice the unit cell symmetry is high symmetry $I4/mmm$ with no phase separation whereas both $I4/m + I4/mmm$ space groups were detected in the phase separated crystals when concentration of Ni $<$ Fe. The absence of superconductivity coincides with the absence of crystalline Fe vacancy order.

Large thermopower in the antiferromagnetic semiconductor BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$

We report electrical and thermal transport properties of Mn-based material BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure. The resistivity of the antiferromagnetic BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ shows a metal-semiconductor transition at $\sim 80$ K with decreasing temperature. Correspondingly, the thermopower $S$ shows a peak at the same temperature, approaching ~150 $μ$V/K. With increasing temperature $S$ decreases to about 125 $μ$V/K at the room temperature. The magnetic field enhances the peak value to 210 $μ$V/K. The Hall resistivity reveals an abrupt change of the carrier density close to the metal-semiconductor transition temperature.

Large linear magnetoresistance and magnetothermopower in layered SrZnSb$_2$

We report the large linear magnetoresistance ($\sim 300\%$ in 9 T field at 2 K) and magnetothermopower in layered SrZnSb$_2$ crystal with quasi-two-dimensional Sb layers. A crossover from the semiclassical parabolic field dependent magnetoresistance to linear field dependent magnetoresistance with increasing magnetic field is observed. The magnetoresistance behavior can be described very well by combining the semiclassical cyclotron contribution and the quantum limit magnetoresistance. Magnetic field also enhances the thermopower. Our results can be well understood by the magnetotransport of Dirac states in the bulk band structure.

Large magnetothermopower and Fermi surface reconstruction in Sb$_2$Te$_2$Se

We report the magnetoresistance, magnetothermopower and quantum oscillation study of Sb$_2$Te$_2$Se single crystal. The in-plane transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a critical field $B^*$ from semiclassical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field unsaturated linear magnetoresistance which persists up to the room temperature. The low-temperature Seebeck coefficient is negative in zero field contrary to the positive Hall resistivity, indicating the multiband effect. The magnetic field induced the sign reversion of the Seebeck coefficient between 2 K and 150 K, . The quantum oscillation of crystals reveals the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Fermi surface. These effects are possibly attributed to the large Fermi surface which touches Brillouin zone boundary to becomes quasi-2D and the variation in the chemical potential induced by the magnetic field.

Quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermions and quantum magnetoresistance in LaAgBi$_2$

We report quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermions and quantum magnetoresistance in LaAgBi$_2$. The band structure shows several narrow bands with nearly linear energy dispersion and Dirac-cone-like points at the Fermi level. The quantum oscillation experiments revealed one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi pocket and another complex pocket with small cyclotron resonant mass. The in-plane transverse magnetoresistance exhibits a crossover at a critical field $B^*$ from semiclassical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field unsaturated linear magnetoresistance which is attributed to the quantum limit of the Dirac fermions. Our results suggest the existence of quasi 2D Dirac fermions in rare-earth based layered compounds with two-dimensional double-sized Bi square nets, similar to (Ca,Sr)MnBi$_{2}$, irrespective of magnetic order.

Sustained phase separation and spin glass in Co-doped K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ single crystals

We present Co substitution effects in K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y-z}$Co$_{z}$Se$_{2}$ (0.06 $\leq$ $z$ $\leq$ 1.73) single crystal alloys. By 3.5\% of Co doping superconductivity is suppressed whereas phase separation of semiconducting K$_{2}$Fe$_{4}$Se$_{5}$ and superconducting/metallic K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is still present. We show that the arrangement and distribution of superconducting phase (stripe phase) is connected with the arrangement of K, Fe and Co atoms. Semiconducting spin glass is found in proximity to superconducting state, persisting for large Co concentrations. At high Co concentrations ferromagnetic metallic state emerges above the spin glass. This is coincident with changes of the unit cell, arrangement and connectivity of stripe conducting phase.

Electronic Griffiths Phase in the Te - Doped Semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$

We report on the emergence of an Electronic Griffiths Phase (EGP) in the doped semiconductor FeSb$_{2}$, predicted for disordered insulators with random localized moments in the vicinity of a metal-insulator transition (MIT). Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements of Fe(Sb$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$)$_{2}$ single crystals show signatures of disorder-induced non-Fermi liquid behavior and a Wilson ratio expected for strong electronic correlations. The EGP states are found on the metallic boundary, between the insulating state ($x = 0$) and a long-range albeit weak magnetic order ($x \geq 0.075$).

Enhanced Thermoelectric Power and Electronic Correlations in RuSe$_2$

We report the electronic structure, electric and thermal transport properties of Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$Se$_2$ ($x \leq 0.2$). RuSe$_2$ is a semiconductor that crystallizes in a cubic pyrite unit cell. The Seebeck coefficient of RuSe$_2$ exceeds -200 $μ$V/K around 730 K. Ir substitution results in the suppression of the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient, suggesting the removal of the peaks in density of states near the Fermi level. Ru$_{0.8}$Ir$_{0.2}$Se$_{2}$ shows a semiconductor-metal crossover at about 30 K. The magnetic field restores the semiconducting behavior. Our results indicate the importance of the electronic correlations in enhanced thermoelectricity of RuSb$_{2}$.

Electron-hole asymmetry, Dirac fermions, and quantum magnetoresistance in BaMnBi2

We report two-dimensional quantum transport and Dirac fermions in BaMnBi2 single crystals. BaMnBi2 is a layered bad metal with highly anisotropic conductivity and magnetic order below 290 K. Magnetotransport properties, nonzero Berry phase, small cyclotronmass, and the first-principles band structure calculations indicate the presence of Dirac fermions in Bi square nets. Quantum oscillations in the Hall channel suggest the presence of both electron and hole pockets, whereas Dirac and parabolic states coexist at the Fermi level.

Observation of Dirac-like band dispersion in LaAgSb$_2$

We present a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations study of the electronic structure of LaAgSb$_2$ in the entire first Brillouin zone. We observe a Dirac-cone-like structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level formed by the crossing of two linear energy bands, as well as the nested segments of Fermi surface pocket emerging from the cone. Our ARPES results show the close relationship of the Dirac cone to the charge-density-wave ordering, providing consistent explanations for exotic behaviors in this material.

Strong enhancement of conventional superconductivity near a quantum critical point of (Ca,Sr)_3Ir_4Sn_13

Competing electronic states are found in the large majority of unconventional superconductors, including high-Tc cuprates, iron based superconductors and many heavy fermion systems. The complex interplay is reflected in phase diagrams as a function of doping or other tuning parameters involving besides superconducting other phases (often magnetic) and quantum critical points. Superconductivity is also found in the vicinity of charge density wave (CDW) order in phase diagrams reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by magnetic fluctuations. There is however less knowledge about the interplay of superconductivity and CDW compared to the magnetic analogon. Here we report about microscopic studies by muon spin rotation as a function of pressure of the Ca_3Ir_4Sn_13 and Sr_3Ir_4Sn_13 cubic compounds, which display superconductivity and a structural phase transition associated with the formation of a CDW. We find a strong enhancement of the superfluid density and of the coupling strength above a pressure of about 1.6 GPa giving direct evidence of the presence of a quantum critical point separating a superconducting phase coexisting with CDW from a pure superconducting phase. The superconducting order parameter in both phases are found to have the same s-wave symmetry. In spite of the conventional phonon-mediated BCS character of this compound, the dependence of the effective superfluid density on the critical temperature puts this system in the "Uemura" plot close to unconventional superconductors.

Creating Nanostructured Superconductors On Demand by Local Current Annealing

Superconductivity results from a Bose condensate of Cooper-paired electrons with a macroscopic quantum wavefunction. Dramatic effects can occur when the region of the condensate is shaped and confined to the nanometer scale. Recent progress in nanostructured superconductors has revealed a route to topological superconductivity, with possible applications in quantum computing. However, challenges remain in controlling the shape and size of specific superconducting materials. Here, we report a new method to create nanostructured superconductors by partial crystallization of the half-Heusler material, YPtBi. Superconducting islands, with diameters in the range of 100 nm, were reproducibly created by local current annealing of disordered YPtBi in the tunneling junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). We characterize the superconducting island properties by scanning tunneling spectroscopic measurements to determine the gap energy, critical temperature and field, coherence length, and vortex formations. These results show unique properties of a confined superconductor and demonstrate that this new method holds promise to create tailored superconductors for a wide variety of nanometer scale applications.
