Weak and stationary solutions to a Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman model with singular potentials and source terms

We study a phase field model proposed recently in the context of tumour growth. The model couples a Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman (CHB) system with a elliptic reaction-diffusion equation for a nutrient. The fluid velocity, governed by the Brinkman law, is not solenodial, as its divergence is a function of the nutrient and the phase field variable, i.e., solution-dependent, and frictionless boundary conditions are prescribed for the velocity to avoid imposing unrealistic constraints on the divergence relation. In this paper we give a first result on the existence of weak and stationary solutions to the CHB model with singular potentials, specifically the double obstacle potential and the logarithmic potential, which ensures the phase field variable stay in the physically relevant interval. New difficulties arise from the interplay between the singular potentials and the solution-dependent source terms, but can be overcome with several key estimates for the approximations of the singular potentials, which may be of independent interests. As a consequence, included in our analysis is a weak existence result for a Darcy variant, and our work serve to generalise recent results on weak and stationary solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard inpainting model with singular potentials.

On a coupled bulk-surface Allen-Cahn system with an affine linear transmission condition and its approximation by a Robin boundary condition

We study a coupled bulk-surface Allen-Cahn system with an affine linear transmission condition, that is, the trace values of the bulk variable and the values of the surface variable are connected via an affine relation, and this serves to generalize the usual dynamic boundary conditions. We tackle the problem of well-posedness via a penalization method using Robin boundary conditions. In particular, for the relaxation problem, the strong well-posedness and long-time behavior of solutions can be shown for more general and possibly nonlinear relations. New difficulties arise since the surface variable is no longer the trace of the bulk variable, and uniform estimates in the relaxation parameter are scarce. Nevertheless, weak convergence to the original problem can be shown. Using the approach of Colli and Fukao (Math. Models Appl. Sci. 2015), we show strong existence to the original problem with affine linear relations, and derive an error estimate between solutions to the relaxed and original problems.

Sharp interface limit of a non-mass-conserving Cahn--Hilliard system with source terms and non-solenoidal Darcy flow

We study the sharp interface limit of a non-mass-conserving Cahn--Hilliard--Darcy system with the weak compactness method developed in Chen (J. Differential Geometry, 1996). The source term present in the Cahn--Hilliard component is a product of the order parameter and a prescribed function with zero spatial mean, leading to non-conservation of mass. Furthermore, the divergence of the velocity field is given by another prescribed function with zero spatial mean, which yields a coupling of the Cahn--Hilliard equation to a non-solenoidal Darcy flow. New difficulties arise in the derivation of uniform estimates due to the presence of the source terms, which can be circumvented if we consider the above specific structures. Moreover, due to the lack of mass-conservation, the analysis is valid as long as one phase does not vanish completely, leading to a local-in-time result. The sharp interface limit for a Cahn--Hilliard--Brinkman system is also discussed.

Convergence to equilibrium for a bulk--surface Allen--Cahn system coupled through a Robin boundary condition

We consider a coupled bulk--surface Allen--Cahn system affixed with a Robin-type boundary condition between the bulk and surface variables. This system can also be viewed as a relaxation to a bulk--surface Allen--Cahn system with non-trivial transmission conditions. Assuming that the nonlinearities are real analytic, we prove the convergence of every global strong solution to a single equilibrium as time tends to infinity. Furthermore, we obtain an estimate on the rate of convergence. The proof relies on an extended Lojasiewicz--Simon type inequality for the bulk--surface coupled system. Compared with previous works, new difficulties arise as in our system the surface variable is no longer the trace of the bulk variable, but now they are coupled through a nonlinear Robin boundary condition.

Bayesian parameter identification in Cahn-Hilliard models for biological growth

We consider the inverse problem of parameter estimation in a diffuse interface model for tumour growth. The model consists of a fourth-order Cahn-Hilliard system and contains three phenomenological parameters: the tumour proliferation rate, the nutrient consumption rate, and the chemotactic sensitivity. We study the inverse problem within the Bayesian framework and construct the likelihood and noise for two typical observation settings. One setting involves an infinite-dimensional data space where we observe the full tumour. In the second setting we observe only the tumour volume, hence the data space is finite-dimensional. We show the well-posedness of the posterior measure for both settings, building upon and improving the analytical results in [C. Kahle and K.F. Lam, Appl. Math. Optim. (2018)]. A numerical example involving synthetic data is presented in which the posterior measure is numerically approximated by the sequential Monte Carlo approach with tempering.

A phase field approach to shape optimization in Navier--Stokes flow with integral state constraint

We consider the shape optimization of an object in Navier--Stokes flow by employing a combined phase field and porous medium approach, along with additional perimeter regularization. By considering integral control and state constraints, we extend the results of earlier works concerning the existence of optimal shapes and the derivation of first order optimality conditions. The control variable is a phase field function that prescribes the shape and topology of the object, while the state variables are the velocity and the pressure of the fluid. In our analysis, we cover a multitude of constraints which include constraints on the center of mass, the volume of the fluid region, and the drag of the object. Finally, we present numerical results of the optimization problem that is solved using the variable metric projection type (VMPT) method proposed by Blank and Rupprecht, where we consider one example of topology optimization without constraints and one example of maximizing the lift of the object with a state constraint, as well as a comparison with earlier results for the drag minimization.

Phase field modelling of surfactants in multi-phase flow

A diffuse interface model for surfactants in multi-phase flow with three or more fluids is derived. A system of Cahn-Hilliard equations is coupled with a Navier-Stokes system and an advection-diffusion equation for the surfactant ensuring thermodynamic consistency. By an asymptotic analysis the model can be related to a moving boundary problem in the sharp interface limit, which is derived from first principles. Results from numerical simulations support the theoretical findings. The main novelties are centred around the conditions in the triple junctions where three fluids meet. Specifically the case of local chemical equilibrium with respect to the surfactant is considered, which allows for interfacial surfactant flow through the triple junctions.

Cahn--Hilliard inpainting with the double obstacle potential

The inpainting of damaged images has a wide range of applications, and many different mathematical methods have been proposed to solve this problem. Inpainting with the help of Cahn--Hilliard models has been particularly successful, and it turns out that Cahn--Hilliard inpainting with the double obstacle potential can lead to better results compared to inpainting with a smooth double well potential. However, a mathematical analysis of this approach is missing so far. In this paper we give first analytical results for a Cahn--Hilliard double obstacle inpainting model regarding existence of global solutions to the time-dependent problem and stationary solutions to the time-independent problem without constraints on the parameters involved. With the help of numerical results we show the effectiveness of the approach for binary and grayscale images.

On a Cahn--Hilliard--Darcy system for tumour growth with solution dependent source terms

We study the existence of weak solutions to a mixture model for tumour growth that consists of a Cahn--Hilliard--Darcy system coupled with an elliptic reaction-diffusion equation. The Darcy law gives rise to an elliptic equation for the pressure that is coupled to the convective Cahn--Hilliard equation through convective and source terms. Both Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions are considered for the pressure variable, which allows for the source terms to be dependent on the solution variables.

On a multi-species Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy tumor growth model with singular potentials

We consider a model describing the evolution of a tumor inside a host tissue in terms of the parameters $φ_p$, $φ_d$ (proliferating and dead cells, respectively), $u$ (cell velocity) and $n$ (nutrient concentration). The variables $φ_p$, $φ_d$ satisfy a Cahn-Hilliard type system with nonzero forcing term (implying that their spatial means are not conserved in time), whereas $u$ obeys a form of the Darcy law and $n$ satisfies a quasistatic diffusion equation. The main novelty of the present work stands in the fact that we are able to consider a configuration potential of singular type implying that the concentration vector $(φ_p,φ_d)$ is constrained to remain in the range of physically admissible values. On the other hand, in view of the presence of nonzero forcing terms, this choice gives rise to a number of mathematical difficulties, especially related to the control of the mean values of $φ_p$ and $φ_d$. For the resulting mathematical problem, by imposing suitable initial-boundary conditions, our main result concerns the existence of weak solutions in a proper regularity class.

Parameter identification via optimal control for a Cahn--Hilliard-chemotaxis system with a variable mobility

We consider the inverse problem of identifying parameters in a variant of the diffuse interface model for tumour growth model proposed by Garcke, Lam, Sitka and Styles (Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 2016). The model contains three constant parameters; namely the tumour growth rate, the chemotaxis parameter and the nutrient consumption rate. We study the inverse problem from the viewpoint of PDE-constrained optimal control theory and establish first order optimality conditions. A chief difficulty in the theoretical analysis lies in proving high order continuous dependence of the strong solutions on the parameters, in order to show the solution map is continuously Fréchet differentiable when the model has a variable mobility. Due to technical restrictions, our results hold only in two dimensions for sufficiently smooth domains. Analogous results for polygonal domains are also shown for the case of constant mobilities. Finally, we propose a discrete scheme for the numerical simulation of the tumour model and solve the inverse problem using a trust-region Gauss--Newton approach.

Analysis of a Cahn--Hilliard system with non-zero Dirichlet conditions modeling tumor growth with chemotaxis

We consider a diffuse interface model for tumor growth consisting of a Cahn--Hilliard equation with source terms coupled to a reaction-diffusion equation, which models a tumor growing in the presence of a nutrient species and surrounded by healthy tissue. The well-posedness of the system equipped with Neumann boundary conditions was found to require regular potentials with quadratic growth. In this work, Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered, and we establish the well-posedness of the system for regular potentials with higher polynomial growth and also for singular potentials. New difficulties are encountered due to the higher polynomial growth, but for regular potentials, we retain the continuous dependence on initial and boundary data for the chemical potential and for the order parameter in strong norms as established in the previous work. Furthermore, we deduce the well-posedness of a variant of the model with quasi-static nutrient by rigorously passing to the limit where the ratio of the nutrient diffusion time-scale to the tumor doubling time-scale is small.

On a diffuse interface model for tumour growth with non-local interactions and degenerate mobilities

We study a non-local variant of a diffuse interface model proposed by Hawkins--Darrud et al. (2012) for tumour growth in the presence of a chemical species acting as nutrient. The system consists of a Cahn--Hilliard equation coupled to a reaction-diffusion equation. For non-degenerate mobilities and smooth potentials, we derive well-posedness results, which are the non-local analogue of those obtained in Frigeri et al. (European J. Appl. Math. 2015). Furthermore, we establish existence of weak solutions for the case of degenerate mobilities and singular potentials, which serves to confine the order parameter to its physically relevant interval. Due to the non-local nature of the equations, under additional assumptions continuous dependence on initial data can also be shown.

Thermodynamically Consistent Navier--Stokes--Cahn--Hilliard Models with Mass Transfer and Chemotaxis

We derive a class of Navier--Stokes--Cahn--Hilliard systems that models two-phase flows with mass transfer coupled to the process of chemotaxis. These thermodynamically consistent models can be seen as the natural Navier--Stokes analogues of earlier Cahn--Hilliard--Darcy models proposed for modeling tumor growth, and are derived based on a volume-averaged velocity. Then we perform mathematical analysis on the simplified model variant with zero excess of total mass and equal densities. We establish the existence of global weak solutions in two and three dimensions for prescribed mass transfer terms. Under additional assumptions, we prove the global strong well-posedness in two dimensions with variable fluid viscosity and mobilities, which also includes a continuous dependence on initial data and mass transfer terms for the chemical potential and the order parameter in strong norms.

A multiphase Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy model for tumour growth with necrosis

We derive a Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy model to describe multiphase tumour growth taking interactions with multiple chemical species into account as well as the simultaneous occurrence of proliferating, quiescent and necrotic regions. Via a coupling of the Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy equations to a system of reaction-diffusion equations a multitude of phenomena such as nutrient diffusion and consumption, angiogenesis, hypoxia, blood vessel growth, and inhibition by toxic agents, which are released for example by the necrotic cells, can be included. A new feature of the modelling approach is that a volume-averaged velocity is used, which dramatically simplifies the resulting equations. With the help of formally matched asymptotic analysis we develop new sharp interface models. Finite element numerical computations are performed and in particular the effects of necrosis on tumour growth is investigated numerically.

A Hele-Shaw-Cahn-Hilliard model for incompressible two-phase flows with different densities

Topology changes in multi-phase fluid flows are difficult to model within a traditional sharp interface theory. Diffuse interface models turn out to be an attractive alternative to model two-phase flows. Based on a Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes model introduced by Abels, Garcke and Grün (Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 2012), which uses a volume averaged velocity, we derive a diffuse interface model in a Hele-Shaw geometry, which in the case of non-matched densities, simplifies an earlier model of Lee, Lowengrub and Goodman (Phys. Fluids 2002). We recover the classical Hele-Shaw model as a sharp interface limit of the diffuse interface model. Furthermore, we show the existence of weak solutions and present several numerical computations including situations with rising bubbles and fingering instabilities.

Global weak solutions and asymptotic limits of a Cahn--Hilliard--Darcy system modelling tumour growth

We study the existence of weak solutions to a Cahn--Hilliard--Darcy system coupled with a convection-reaction-diffusion equation through the fluxes, through the source terms and in Darcy's law. The system of equations arises from a mixture model for tumour growth accounting for transport mechanisms such as chemotaxis and active transport. We prove, via a Galerkin approximation, the existence of global weak solutions in two and three dimensions, along with new regularity results for the velocity field and for the pressure. Due to the coupling with the Darcy system, the time derivatives have lower regularity compared to systems without Darcy flow, but in the two dimensional case we employ a new regularity result for the velocity to obtain better integrability and temporal regularity for the time derivatives. Then, we deduce the global existence of weak solutions for two variants of the model; one where the velocity is zero and another where the chemotaxis and active transport mechanisms are absent.
