Neighborhood persistency of the linear optimization relaxation of integer linear optimization

For an integer linear optimization (ILO) problem, persistency of its linear optimization (LO) relaxation is a property that for every optimal solution of the relaxation that assigns integer values to some variables, there exists an optimal solution of the ILO problem in which these variables retain the same values. Although persistency has been used to develop heuristic, approximation, and fixed-parameter algorithms for special cases of ILO, its applicability remains unknown in the literature. In this paper we reveal a maximal subclass of ILO such that its LO relaxation has persistency. Specifically, we show that the LO relaxation of ILO on unit-two-variable-per-inequality (UTVPI) systems has persistency and is (in a certain sense) maximal among such ILO. Our persistency result generalizes the results of Nemhauser and Trotter, Hochbaum et al., and Fiorini et al. Even more, we propose a stronger property called \emph{neighborhood persistency} and show that the LO relaxation of ILO on UTVPI systems in general has this property. Using this stronger result, we obtain a fixed-parameter algorithm (where the parameter is the solution size) and another proof of two-approximability for ILO on UTVPI systems where objective functions and variables are non-negative.

Trichotomy for the reconfiguration problem of integer linear systems

In this paper, we consider the reconfiguration problem of integer linear systems. In this problem, we are given an integer linear system $I$ and two feasible solutions $\boldsymbol{s}$ and $\boldsymbol{t}$ of $I$, and then asked to transform $\boldsymbol{s}$ to $\boldsymbol{t}$ by changing a value of only one variable at a time, while maintaining a feasible solution of $I$ throughout. $Z(I)$ for $I$ is the complexity index introduced by Kimura and Makino (Discrete Applied Mathematics 200:67--78, 2016), which is defined by the sign pattern of the input matrix. We analyze the complexity of the reconfiguration problem of integer linear systems based on the complexity index $Z(I)$ of given $I$. We then show that the problem is (i) solvable in constant time if $Z(I)$ is less than one, (ii) weakly coNP-complete and pseudo-polynomially solvable if $Z(I)$ is exactly one, and (iii) PSPACE-complete if $Z(I)$ is greater than one. Since the complexity indices of Horn and two-variable-par-inequality integer linear systems are at most one, our results imply that the reconfiguration of these systems are in coNP and pseudo-polynomially solvable. Moreover, this is the first result that reveals coNP-completeness for a reconfiguration problem, to the best of our knowledge.

Optimal Matroid Partitioning Problems

This paper studies optimal matroid partitioning problems for various objective functions. In the problem, we are given a finite set $E$ and $k$ weighted matroids $(E, \mathcal{I}_i, w_i)$, $i = 1, \dots, k$, and our task is to find a minimum partition $(I_1,\dots,I_k)$ of $E$ such that $I_i \in \mathcal{I}_i$ for all $i$. For each objective function, we give a polynomial-time algorithm or prove NP-hardness. In particular, for the case when the given weighted matroids are identical and the objective function is the sum of the maximum weight in each set (i.e., $\sum_{i=1}^k\max_{e\in I_i}w_i(e)$), we show that the problem is strongly NP-hard but admits a PTAS.
