Towards a Decentralized Metaverse: Synchronized Orchestration of Digital Twins and Sub-Metaverses

Accommodating digital twins (DTs) in the metaverse is essential to achieving digital reality. This need for integrating DTs into the metaverse while operating them at the network edge has increased the demand for a decentralized edge-enabled metaverse. Hence, to consolidate the fusion between real and digital entities, it is necessary to harmonize the interoperability between DTs and the metaverse at the edge. In this paper, a novel decentralized metaverse framework that incorporates DT operations at the wireless edge is presented. In particular, a system of autonomous physical twins (PTs) operating in a massively-sensed zone is replicated as cyber twins (CTs) at the mobile edge computing (MEC) servers. To render the CTs' digital environment, this zone is partitioned and teleported as distributed sub-metaverses to the MEC servers. To guarantee seamless synchronization of the sub-metaverses and their associated CTs with the dynamics of the real world and PTs, respectively, this joint synchronization problem is posed as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the average sub-synchronization time between the real and digital worlds, while meeting the DT synchronization intensity requirements. To solve this problem, a novel iterative algorithm for joint sub-metaverse and DT association at the MEC servers is proposed. This algorithm exploits the rigorous framework of optimal transport theory so as to efficiently distribute the sub-metaverses and DTs, while considering the computing and communication resource allocations. Simulation results show that the proposed solution can orchestrate the interplay between DTs and sub-metaverses to achieve a 25.75 % reduction in the sub-synchronization time in comparison to the signal-to-noise ratio-based association scheme.

Experiment of Multi-UAV Full-Duplex System Equipped with Directional Antennas

One of the key enablers for the realization of a variety of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based systems is the high-performance communication system linking many UAVs and ground station. We have proposed a spectrum-efficient full-duplex directional-antennas-equipped multi-UAV communication system with low hardware complexity to address the issues of low spectrum efficiency caused by co-channel interference in areal channels. In this paper, by using the prototype system including UAVs and ground station, field experiments are carried out to confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system's key feature, i.e., co-channel interference cancellation among UAVs by directional antennas and UAV relative position control, instead of energy-consuming dedicated self-interference cancellers on UAVs in traditional full-duplex systems. Both uplink and downlink performance are tested. Specially, in downlink experiment, channel power of interference between a pair of two UAVs is measured when UAVs are in different positional relationships. The experiment results agree well with the designs and confirm that the proposed system can greatly improve the system performance.

Context-Based MEC Platform for Augmented-Reality Services in 5G Networks

Augmented reality (AR) has drawn great attention in recent years. However, current AR devices have drawbacks, e.g., weak computation ability and large power consumption. To solve the problem, mobile edge computing (MEC) can be introduced as a key technology to offload data and computation from AR devices to MEC servers via 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) networks. To this end, a context-based MEC platform for AR services in 5G networks is proposed in this paper. On the platform, MEC is employed as a data processing center while AR devices are simplified as universal input/output devices, which overcomes their limitations and achieves better user experience. Moreover, the proof-of-concept (PoC) hardware prototype of the platform, and two typical use cases providing AR services of navigation and face recognition respectively are implemented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the platform. Finally, the performance of the platform is also numerically evaluated, and the results validate the system design and agree well with the design expectations.

Ground Experiment of Full-Duplex Multi-UAV System Enabled by Directional Antennas

A high performance multi-UAV communication system, which bridges multiple UAVs and ground station, is one of the key enablers to realize a variety of UAV-based systems. To address the issues such as the low spectrum efficiency caused by the co-channel interference, we have proposed a spectrum-efficient full-duplex multi-UA V communication system with low hardware complexity. In this paper, on-ground experiments are conducted to confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the key feature of the proposed system, i.e., co-channel interference cancellation among UAVs by directional antennas and UAV position control, instead of energy-consuming dedicated self-interference cancellers on UAVs in traditional full-duplex systems. Channel power of interference link between a pair of two UAVs reusing the same channel is measured, and the achievable channel capacity is also measured by a prototype system implemented by software-defined radio devices. The results of different antennas and different antenna heights are also compared. The experimental results agree well with the designs and confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system. This ground experiment is a work in progress to provide preliminary results for the multi-UAV-based experiments in the air in the future.

Full-Duplex Aerial Communication System for Multiple UAVs with Directional Antennas

UAV-based wireless systems, such as wireless relay and remote sensing, have attracted great attentions from academia and industry. To realize them, a high-performance wireless aerial communication system, which bridges UAVs and ground stations, is one of the key enablers. However, there are still issues hindering its development, such as the severe co-channel interference among UAVs, and the limited payload/battery-life of UAVs. To address the challenges, we propose an aerial communication system which enables system-level full-duplex communication of multiple UAVs with lower hardware complexities than ideal full-duplex communication systems. In the proposed system, each channel is re-assigned to the uplink and downlink of a pair of UAVs, and each UAV employ a pair of separated channels for its uplink and downlink. The co-channel interference between UAVs that reuse same channels is eliminated by exploiting advantages of UAVs' maneuverability and high-gain directional antennas equipped in UAVs and ground stations, so that dedicated cancellers are not necessary in the proposed system. The system design and performance analysis are given, and the simulation results well agree with the designs.

Spectrum Sharing between Directional-Antenna- Equipped UAV System and Terrestrial Systems

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-based applications, such as surveillance systems and wireless relays, are attracting increasing attention from academia and industrial fields. The high-performance aerial communication system is one of the key enablers for them. However, due to the low attenuation of radio waves in the air-to-ground channels, the interference between aerial and terrestrial communication systems would significantly deteriorate their communication performance and greatly limit the potential UAV applications. To address the problem, in this paper, the spectrum sharing strategy between a multiple UAV communication system, in which both UAVs and ground station (GS) are equipped with directional antennas, and terrestrial systems is proposed. The GS position is selected and the flyable areas of the UAVs using certain spectrum resources are defined in advance using prior knowledge from spectrum monitoring on terrestrial communication systems to minimize interference and maximize the flyable areas of the UAVs instead of the low-efficient dynamic channel sensing and allocation for interference elimination. The simulations are conducted through a case study of the spectrum sharing between a multi-UAV video transmission system and the terrestrial wireless local area network (WLAN) system in the 5.7GHz band. The simulation results show that thanks to the proposed system the entire area can be enabled for UAV flight.

Towards mmWave V2X in 5G and Beyond to Support Automated Driving

Millimeter wave provides high data rates for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications. This paper motivates millimeter wave to support automated driving and begins by explaining V2X use cases that support automated driving with references to several standardi-zation bodies. The paper gives a classification of existing V2X stand-ards: IEEE802.11p and LTE V2X, along with the status of their com-mercial deployment. Then, the paper provides a detailed assessment on how millimeter wave V2X enables the use case of cooperative perception. The explanations provide detailed rate calculations for this use case and show that millimeter wave is the only technology able to achieve the requirements. Furthermore, specific challenges related to millimeter wave for V2X are described, including cover-age enhancement and beam alignment. The paper concludes with some results from three studies, i.e. IEEE802.11ad (WiGig) based V2X, extension of 5G NR (New Radio) toward mmWave V2X, and prototypes of intelligent street with mmWave V2X.

Proof-of-Concept of Uncompressed 4K Video Transmission from Drone through mmWave

Drones are attracting increasing attention in varieties of research fields because of their flexibility and are expected to be applied to a wide range of potential applications, among which the super-high-resolution video surveillance system using drones especially gains the authors research attention. Surveillance systems using cameras with fixed locations always suffer the blind spots due to the blockage or inappropriate deployments. Instead, by using the drones equipped with cameras, the surveillance performance can be drastically improved due to their high mobilities. The video quality is also a key factor of the surveillance performance. In face recognition, one of the most important surveillance applications, the uncompressed video can greatly improve the detection accuracy, but it is difficult to transmit uncompressed video in real time due to the huge data sizes. To address the issue, we propose to use the ultra-high speed mmWave communication for the video transmission from drones. Moreover, due to the limited battery energy and computing power in drones, we introduce the edge computing and propose to offload all the computation from the drones to the ground station. In addition, a proof-of-concept prototype hardware of the proposed uncompressed 4K video transmission system from drones through mmWave is developed, and the experiments results are consistent with the system design expectations.

A Study on Optimal Beam Patterns for Single User Massive MIMO Transmissions

This paper proposes optimal beam patterns of analog beamforming for SU (Single User) massive MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) transmission systems. For hybrid beamforming in SU massive MIMO systems, there are several design parameters such as beam patterns, the number of beams (streams), the shape of array antennas, and so on. In conventional hybrid beamforming, rectangular patch array antennas implemented on a planar surface with linear phase shift beam patterns have been used widely. However, it remains unclear whether existing configurations are optimal or not. Therefore, we propose a method using OBPB (Optimal Beam Projection Beamforming) for designing configuration parameters of the hybrid beamforming. By using the method, the optimal beam patterns are derived first, and are projected on the assumed surface to calculate the achievable number of streams and the resulting channel capacity. The results indicate OBPB with a spherical surface yields at least 3.5 times higher channel capacity than conventional configurations.

A Guide of Fingerprint Based Radio Emitter Localization using Multiple Sensors

Location information is essential to varieties of applications. It is one of the most important context to be detected by wireless distributed sensors, which is a key technology in Internet-of-Things. Fingerprint-based methods, which compare location unique fingerprints collected beforehand with the fingerprint measured from the target, have attracted much attention recently in both of academia and industry. They have been successfully used for many location-based applications. From the viewpoint of practical applications, in this paper, four different typical approaches of fingerprint-based radio emitter localization system are introduced with four different representative applications: localization of LTE smart phone used for anti-cheating in exams, indoor localization of Wi-Fi terminals, localized light control in BEMS using location information of occupants, and illegal radio localization in outdoor environments. Based on the different practical application scenarios, different solutions, which are designed to enhance the localization performance, are discussed in detail. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first paper to give a guideline for readers about fingerprint-based localization system in terms of fingerprint selection, hardware architecture design and algorithm enhancement

Optimal Design Method of MIMO Antenna Directivities and Corresponding Current Distributions by Using Spherical Mode Expansion

This paper proposes a new methodology to design optimal antennas for MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) communication systems by using spherical mode expansion. Given spatial channel properties of a MIMO channel, such as the angular profile at both sides, the optimal MIMO antennas should provide the largest channel capacity with a constraint of the limited implementation space (volume). In designing a conventional MIMO antenna, first the antenna structure (current distribution) is determined, second antenna directivity is calculated based on the current distribution, and thirdly MIMO channel capacity is calculated by using given angular profiles and obtained antenna directivity. This process is repeated by adjusting the antenna structure until the performance satisfies a predefined threshold. To the contrary, this paper solves the optimization problem analytically and finally gives near optimal antenna structure (current distribution) without any greedy search. In the proposed process, first the optimal directivity of MIMO antennas is derived by applying spherical mode expansion to the angular profiles, and second a far-near field conversion is applied on the derived optimal directivity to achieve near optimal current distributions on a limited surface. The effectiveness of the proposed design methodology is validated via numerical calculation of MIMO channel capacity as in the conventional design method while giving near optimal current distribution with constraint of an antenna structure derived from proposed methodology.

Where, When, and How mmWave is Used in 5G and Beyon

Wireless engineers and business planners commonly raise the question on where, when, and how millimeter-wave (mmWave) will be used in 5G and beyond. Since the next generation network is not just a new radio access standard, but instead an integration of networks for vertical markets with diverse applications, answers to the question depend on scenarios and use cases to be deployed. This paper gives four 5G mmWave deployment examples and describes in chronological order the scenarios and use cases of their probable deployment, including expected system architectures and hardware prototypes. The paper starts with 28 GHz outdoor backhauling for fixed wireless access and moving hotspots, which will be demonstrated at the PyeongChang winter Olympic games in 2018. The second deployment example is a 60 GHz unlicensed indoor access system at the Tokyo-Narita airport, which is combined with Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) to enable ultra-high speed content download with low latency. The third example is mmWave mesh network to be used as a micro Radio Access Network (μ-RAN), for cost-effective backhauling of small-cell Base Stations (BSs) in dense urban scenarios. The last example is mmWave based Vehicular-to-Vehicular (V2V) and Vehicular-to-Everything (V2X) communications system, which enables automated driving by exchanging High Definition (HD) dynamic map information between cars and Roadside Units (RSUs). For 5G and beyond, mmWave and MEC will play important roles for a diverse set of applications that require both ultra-high data rate and low latency communications.

Design and implementation of lighting control system using battery-less wireless human detection sensor networks

Artificial lighting is responsible for a large portion of total energy consumption and has great potential for energy saving. This paper designs an LED light control algorithm based on users' localization using multiple battery-less binary human detection sensors. The proposed lighting control system focuses on reducing office lighting energy consumption and satisfying users' illumination requirement. Most current lighting control systems use infrared human detection sensors, but the poor detection probability, especially for a static user, makes it difficult to realize comfortable and effective lighting control. To improve the detection probability of each sensor, we proposed to locate sensors as close to each user as possible by using a battery-less wireless sensor network, in which all sensors can be placed freely in the space with high energy stability. We also proposed to use a multi-sensor-based user localization algorithm to capture user's position more accurately and realize fine lighting control which works even with static users. The system is actually implemented in an indoor office environment in a pilot project. A verification experiment is conducted by measuring the practical illumination and power consumption. The performance agrees with design expectations. It shows that the proposed LED lighting control system reduces the energy consumption significantly, 57% compared to the batch control scheme, and satisfies user's illumination requirement with 100% probability.

Wi-Fi/WiGig Coordination for Optimal WiGig Concurrent Transmissions in Random Access Scenario

Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) access points (APs) using 60 GHz unlicensed frequency band are considered as key enablers for future Gbps WLANs. Due to its short range transmission with high susceptibility to path blocking, a multiple number of WiGig APs should be installed to fully cover a typical target environment. However, using autonomously operated WiGig APs with IEEE 802.11ad DCF, the exhaustive search analog beamforming and the maximum received power based autonomous users association prevent the establishment of optimal WiGig concurrent links that maximize the total system throughput in random access scenarios. In this paper, we formulate the problem of WiGig concurrent transmissions in random access scenarios as an optimization problem, then we propose a Wi-Fi/WiGig coordination architecture to solve it. The proposed coordinated Wi-Fi/WiGig WLAN is based on a tight coordination between the 5 GHz (Wi-Fi) and the 60 GHz (WiGig) unlicensed frequency bands. By which, the wide coverage Wi-Fi band controls the establishment of the WiGig concurrent links. Statistical learning using Wi-Fi fingerprinting is used for estimating the best candidate AP and its best beam identification (ID) for establishing the WiGig concurrent link without making any interference to the existing WiGig data links.

Experimental Study on Battery-less Sensor Network Activated by Multi-point Wireless Energy Transmission

This paper empirically validates battery-less sensor activation via wireless energy transmission to release sensors from wires and batteries. To seamlessly extend the coverage and activate sensor nodes distributed in any indoor environment, we proposed multi-point wireless energy transmission with carrier shift diversity. In this scheme, multiple transmitters are employed to compensate path-loss attenuation and orthogonal frequencies are allocated to the multiple transmitters to avoid the destructive interference that occurs when the same frequency is used by all transmitters. In our previous works, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme was validated theoretically and also empirically by using just a spectrum analyzer to measure the received power. In this paper, we develop low-energy battery-less sensor nodes whose consumed power and required received power for activation are respectively 142 uW and 400 uW. In addition, we conduct indoor experiments in which the received power and activation of battery-less sensor node are simultaneously observed by using the developed battery-less sensor node and a spectrum analyzer. The results show that the coverage of single-point and multi-point wireless energy transmission without carrier shift diversity are, respectively, 84.4% and 83.7%, while the coverage of the proposed scheme is 100%. It can be concluded that the effectiveness of the proposed scheme can be verified by our experiments using real battery-less sensor nodes.

Millimeter-wave Wireless LAN and its Extension toward 5G Heterogeneous Networks

Millimeter-wave (mmw) frequency bands, especially 60 GHz unlicensed band, are considered as a promising solution for gigabit short range wireless communication systems. IEEE standard 802.11ad, also known as WiGig, is standardized for the usage of the 60 GHz unlicensed band for wireless local area networks (WLANs). By using this mmw WLAN, multi-Gbps rate can be achieved to support bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications. Exhaustive search along with beamforming (BF) is usually used to overcome 60 GHz channel propagation loss and accomplish data transmissions in such mmw WLANs. Because of its short range transmission with a high susceptibility to path blocking, multiple number of mmw access points (APs) should be used to fully cover a typical target environment for future high capacity multi-Gbps WLANs. Therefore, coordination among mmw APs is highly needed to overcome packet collisions resulting from un-coordinated exhaustive search BF and to increase the total capacity of mmw WLANs. In this paper, we firstly give the current status of mmw WLANs with our developed WiGig AP prototype. Then, we highlight the great need for coordinated transmissions among mmw APs as a key enabler for future high capacity mmw WLANs. Two different types of coordinated mmw WLAN architecture are introduced. One is the distributed antenna type architecture to realize centralized coordination, while the other is an autonomous coordination with the assistance of legacy Wi-Fi signaling. Moreover, two heterogeneous network (HetNet) architectures are also introduced to efficiently extend the coordinated mmw WLANs to be used for future 5th Generation (5G) cellular networks.

Delayed Offloading using Cloud Cooperated Millimeter Wave Gates

Increasing wireless cellular networks capacity is one of the major challenges for the coming years, especially if we consider the annual doubling of mobile user traffic. Towards that and thanks to the fact that a significant amount of mobile data is indeed delay tolerable, in this paper, we suggest embedding the delayed offloading of some user traffic to be a part of future wireless cellular networks. To accomplish this, user delayed files will be offloaded using ultra-high speed Millimeter Wave (Mm-W) Gates. The Mm-W Gate, which will be distributed inside the Macro basestation (BS) area, consists of number of Mm-W Access Points (APs) controlled by a local coordinator installed inside the Gate. To effectively manage the delayed offloading mechanism, utilizing the concept of User/Control (U/C) data splitting, the Gates coordinators and the Macro BS are connected to the Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) through optical fiber links. Also, files offloading organizer software is used by the User Equipment (UE). A novel weighted proportional fairness (WPF) user scheduling algorithm is proposed to maximize the Gate Offloading Efficiency (GOFE) with maintaining long term fairness among the different mobility users pass through the Gate. If the Gate is properly designed and the files delay deadlines are properly set; near 100% GOFE with average reduction of 99.7% in UE energy consumption can be obtained, in time the user just passes through the Gate.

WiFi Assisted Multi-WiGig AP Coordination for Future Multi-Gbps WLANs

Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) access points (APs) using 60 GHz unlicensed frequency band are considered as key enablers for future Gbps wireless local area networks (WLANs). Exhaustive search analog beamforming (BF) is mainly used with WiGig transmissions to overcome channel propagation loss and accomplish high rate data transmissions. Due to its short range transmission with high susceptibility to path blocking, a multiple number of WiGig APs should be installed to fully cover a typical target environment. Therefore, coordination among the installed APs is highly needed for enabling WiGig concurrent transmissions while overcoming packet collisions and reducing interference, which highly increases the total throughput of WiGig WLANs. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive architecture for coordinated WiGig WLANs. The proposed WiGig WLAN is based on a tight coordination between the 5 GHz (WiFi) and the 60 GHz (WiGig) unlicensed frequency bands. By which, the wide coverage WiFi band is used to do the signaling required for organizing WiGig concurrent data transmissions using control/user (C/U) plane splitting. To reduce interference to existing WiGig data links while doing BF, a novel location based BF mechanism is also proposed based on WiFi fingerprinting. The proposed coordinated WiGig WLAN highly outperforms conventional un-coordinated one in terms of total throughput, average packet delay and packet dropping rate.
