Effective Gravitational Equations on Brane World with Induced Gravity

We present the effective equations to describe the four-dimensional gravity of a brane world, assuming that a five-dimensional bulk spacetime satisfies the Einstein equations and gravity is confined on the $Z_2$ symmetric brane. Applying this formalism, we study the induced-gravity brane model first proposed by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati. In a generalization of their model, we show that an effective cosmological constant on the brane can be extremely reduced in contrast to the case of the Randall-Sundrum model even if a bulk cosmological constant and a brane tension are not fine-tuned.

Five-dimensional Black Hole and Particle Solution with Non-Abelian Gauge Field

We study the 5-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system with a cosmological constant. Assuming a spherically symmetric spacetime, we find a new analytic black hole solution, which approaches asymptotically "quasi-Minkowski", "quasi anti-de Sitter", or "quasi de Sitter" spacetime depending on the sign of a cosmological constant. Since there is no singularity except for the origin which is covered by an event horizon, we regard it as a localized object. This solution corresponds to a magnetically charged black hole. We also present a singularity-free particle-like solution and a non-trivial black hole solution numerically. Those solutions correspond to the Bartnik-McKinnon solution and a colored black hole with a cosmological constant in the 4-dimensions. We analyze their asymptotic behaviors, spacetime structures and thermodynamical properties. We show that there is a set of stable solutions if a cosmological constant is negative.

Uniqueness of Self-Similar Asymptotically Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Spacetime in Brans-Dicke theory

We investigate spherically symmetric self-similar solutions in Brans-Dicke theory. Assuming a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p=(γ-1)μ(1 \le γ<2)$, we show that there are no non-trivial solutions which approach asymptotically to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime if the energy density is positive. This result suggests that primordial black holes in Brans-Dicke theory cannot grow at the same rate as the size of the cosmological particle horizon.

Dynamics of Scalar field in a Brane World

We study the dynamics of a scalar field in the brane cosmology. We assume that a scalar field is confined in our 4-dimensional world. As for the potential of the scalar field, we discuss three typical models: (1) a power-law potential, (2) an inverse-power-law potential, and (3) an exponential potential. We show that the behavior of the scalar field is very different from a conventional cosmology when the energy density square term is dominated.

Perturbation theory in Lagrangian hydrodynamics for a cosmological fluid with velocity dispersion

We extensively develop a perturbation theory for nonlinear cosmological dynamics, based on the Lagrangian description of hydrodynamics. We solve hydrodynamic equations for a self-gravitating fluid with pressure, given by a polytropic equation of state, using a perturbation method up to second order. This perturbative approach is an extension of the usual Lagrangian perturbation theory for a pressureless fluid, in view of inclusion of the pressure effect, which should be taken into account on the occurrence of velocity dispersion. We obtain the first-order solutions in generic background universes and the second-order solutions in wider range of a polytropic index, whereas our previous work gives the first-order solutions only in the Einstein-de Sitter background and the second-order solutions for the polytropic index 4/3. Using the perturbation solutions, we present illustrative examples of our formulation in one- and two-dimensional systems, and discuss how the evolution of inhomogeneities changes for the variation of the polytropic index.

Conservation laws for collisions of branes (or shells) in general relativity

We consider the collision of self-gravitating n-branes in a (n+2)-dimensional spacetime. We show that there is a geometrical constraint which can be expressed as a simple sum rule for angles characterizing Lorentz boosts between branes and the intervening spacetime regions. This constraint can then be re-interpreted as either energy or momentum conservation at the collision.

Inhomogeneities in Newtonian Cosmology and its Backreaction to the Evolution of the Universe

We study an effect of inhomogeneity of density distribution of the Universe. We propose a new Lagrangian perturbation theory with a backreaction effect by inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity affects the expansion rate in a local domain and its own growing rate. We numerically analyze a one-dimensional plane-symmetric model, and calculate the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of several observed variables to discuss those statistical properties. We find that the PDF of pairwise peculiar velocity shows an effective difference from the conventional Lagrangian approach, i.e. even in one-dimensional plane symmetric case, the PDF approaches an exponential form in a small relative-velocity region, which agree with the N-body simulation.

Density Discontinuity of a Neutron Star and Gravitational Waves

We calculate quasi-normal f- and g-modes of a neutron star with density discontinuity, which may appear in a phase transition at extreme high density. We find that discontinuity will reflect largely on the f-mode, and that the g-mode could also be important for a less massive star.

Origin of scaling structure and non-gaussian velocity distribution in self-gravitating ring model

Fractal structures and non-Gaussian velocity distributions are characteristic properties commonly observed in virialized self-gravitating systems such as galaxies or interstellar molecular clouds. We study the origin of these properties using the one-dimensional ring model which we newly propose in this paper. In this simple model, $N$ particles are moving, on a circular ring fixed in the three dimensional space, with mutual interaction of gravity. This model is suitable for accurate symplectic integration method by which we find the phase transition in this system from extended-phase to collapsed-phase through an interesting phase (\halo-phase) which has negative specific heat. In this intermediate energy scale, there appear scaling properties, non-thermal and non-Gaussian velocity distributions. In contrast, these peculiar properties are never observed in other \gas and \core phases. Particles in each phase have typical time scales of motion determined by the cutoff length $ξ$, the ring radius $R$ and the total energy $E$. Thus all relaxation patterns of the system are determined by these three time scales.

Quintessence in a Brane World

We reanalyze a new quintessence scenario in a brane world model, assuming that a quintessence scalar field is confined in our 3-dimensional brane world. We study three typical quintessence models : (1) an inverse-power-law potential, (2) an exponential potential, and (3) kinetic-term quintessence ($k$-essence) model. With an inverse power law potential model ($V(ϕ) = μ^{α+ 4} ϕ^{- α}$), we show that in the quadratic dominant stage, the density parameter of a scalar field $Ω_ϕ$ decreases as $a^{-4(α-2)/(α+2)}$ for $2<α< 6$, which is followed by the conventional quintessence scenario. This feature provides us wider initial conditions for a successful quintessence. In fact, even if the universe is initially in a scalar-field dominant, it eventually evolves into a radiation dominant era in the $ρ^2$-dominant stage. Assuming an equipartition condition, we discuss constraints on parameters, resulting that $α\geq 4$ is required. This constraint also restricts the value of the 5-dimensional Planck mass, e.g. $4 \times 10^{-14}m_4 \lsim m_5 \lsim 3 \times 10^{-13}m_4$ for $α=5$. For an exponential potential model $V=μ^4\exp(-λϕ/m_4)$, we may not find a natural and successful quintessence scenario as it is. While, for a kinetic-term quintessence, we find a tracking solution even in $ρ^2$-dominant stage, rather than the $Ω_ϕ$-decreasing solution for an inverse-power-law potential. Then we do find a little advantage in a brane world. Only the density parameter increases more slowly in the $ρ^2$-dominant stage, which provides a wider initial condition for a successful quintessence.

Internal structure of Skyrme black hole

We consider the internal structure of the Skyrme black hole under a static and spherically symmetric ansatz. $@u8(Be concentrate on solutions with the node number one and with the "winding" number zero, where there exist two solutions for each horizon radius; one solution is stable and the other is unstable against linear perturbation. We find that a generic solution exhibits an oscillating behavior near the sigularity, as similar to a solution in the Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) system, independently to stability of the solution. Comparing it with that in the EYM system, this oscillation becomes mild because of the mass term of the Skyrme field. We also find Schwarzschild-like exceptional solutions where no oscillating behavior is seen. Contrary to the EYM system where there is one such solution branch if the node number is fixed, there are two branches corresponding to the stable and the unstable ones.

Brane Quintessence

We propose a new quintessence scenario in the brane cosmology, assuming that a quintessence field $Q$ is confined in our 3-dimensional brane world. With a potential $V(Q)= μ^{α+4} Q^{-α}~(α\geq 2)$, we find that the density parameter of the scalar field decreases as $Ω_Q \sim a^{-4(α-2)/(α+2)}$ in the epoch of quadratic energy density dominance, if $α\leq 6$. This attractor solution is followed by the usual tracking quintessence scenario after a conventional Friedmann universe is recovered. With an equipartition of initial energy density, we find a natural and successful quintessence model for $α\gsim 4$.

Brane preheating

We study brane-world preheating in massive chaotic inflationary scenario where scalar fields are confined on the 3-brane. Assuming that quadratic contribution in energy densities dominates the Hubble expansion rate during preheating, the amplitude of inflaton decreases slowly relative to the standard dust-dominated case. This leads to an efficient production of $χ$ particles via nonperturbative decay of inflaton even if its coupling is of order $g=10^{-5}$. We also discuss massive particle creation heavier than inflaton, which may play important roles for the baryo- and lepto-genesis scenarios.

Primordial fractal density perturbations and structure formation in the Universe: 1-Dimensional collisionless sheet model

Two-point correlation function of galaxy distribution shows that the structure in the present Universe is scale-free up to a certain scale (at least several tens Mpc), which suggests that a fractal structure may exist. If small primordial density fluctuations have a fractal structure, the present fractal-like nonlinear structure below the horizon scale could be naturally explained. We analyze the time evolution of fractal density perturbations in Einstein-de Sitter universe, and study how the perturbation evolves and what kind of nonlinear structure will come out. We assume a one-dimensional collisionless sheet model with initial Cantor-type fractal perturbations. The nonlinear structure seems to approach some attractor with a unique fractal dimension, which is independent of the fractal dimensions of initial perturbations. A discrete self-similarity in the phase space is also found when the universal nonlinear fractal structure is reached.

Dilaton-gravity on the brane

We derive the four-dimensional field equations for the induced metric and scalar field on the world-volume of a 3-brane in a five-dimensional bulk with Einstein gravity plus a self-interacting scalar field. We calculate the effective four-dimensional gravitational constant and cosmological constant for arbitrary forms of the brane tension and self-interaction potential for the scalar field in the bulk. In addition to the canonical energy-momentum tensor for the scalar field and ordinary matter on the brane, the effective four-dimensional Einstein equations include terms due to the scalar field and gravitational waves in the bulk. We present solutions corresponding to static Minkowski brane worlds and also dynamical Friedmann-Robertson-Walker brane world cosmologies. We discuss the induced coupling of the scalar field to ordinary matter on the brane.

Gravitational waves from a spinning particle scattered by a relativistic star: Axial mode case

We study gravitational waves from a spinning test particle scattered by a relativistic star using a perturbation method. The present analysis is restricted to axial modes. By calculating the energy spectrum, the waveforms and the total energy and angular momentum of gravitational waves, we analyze the dependence of the emitted gravitational waves on a particle spin. For a normal neutron star, the energy spectrum has one broad peak whose characteristic frequency corresponds to the angular velocity at the turning point (a periastron). Since the turning point is determined by the orbital parameter, there exists the dependence of the gravitational wave on a particle spin. We find that the total energy of $l = 2$ gravitational waves gets larger as the spin increases in the anti-parallel direction to the orbital angular momentum. For an ultracompact star, in addition to such an orbital contribution, we find the quasi-normal modes exited by a scattered particle, whose excitation rate to gravitational waves depends on the particle spin. We also discuss the ratio of the total angular momentum to the total energy of gravitational waves and explain its spin dependence.

Estimating Hawking radiation for exotic black holes

We study about an approximation method of the Hawking radiation. We analyze an massless scalar field in exotic black hole backgrounds models which have peculiar properties in black hole thermodynamics (monopole black hole in SO(3) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system and dilatoic black hole in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system). A scalar field is assumed not to be couple to matter fields consisting of a black hole background. Except for extreme black holes, we can well approximate the Hawking radiaition by `black body' one with Hawking temperature estimated at a radius of a critical impact parameter.

The fate of Reissner-Nortström black hole in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system

We study about an evaporating process of black holes in SO(3) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system. We consider a massless scalar field which couple neither with the Yang-Mills field nor with the Higgs field surrounding the black hole. We discuss differences in evaporating rate between a monopole black hole and a Reissner-Nortström (RN) black hole.
