Non-equilibrium Fluctuation Relations in a Quantum Coherent Conductor

We experimentally demonstrate the validity of non-equilibrium fluctuation relations by using a quantum coherent conductor. In equilibrium the fluctuation-dissipation relation leads to the correlation between current and current noise at the conductor, namely, Johnson-Nyqusit relation. When the conductor is voltage-biased so that the non-linear regime is entered, the fluctuation theorem has predicted similar non-equilibrium fluctuation relations, which hold true even when the Onsager-Casmir relations are broken in magnetic fields. Our experiments qualitatively validate the predictions as the first evidence of this theorem in the non-equilibrium quantum regime. In the appendix, we give simple deduction of the higher order correlations between the current and the current noise based on the fluctuation theorem.

Semiclassical Theory for Universality in Quantum Chaos with Symmetry Crossover

We address the quantum-classical correspondence for chaotic systems with a crossover between symmetry classes. We consider the energy level statistics of a classically chaotic system in a weak magnetic field. The generating function of spectral correlations is calculated by using the semiclassical periodic-orbit theory. An explicit calculation up to the second order, including the non-oscillatory and oscillatory terms, agrees with the prediction of random matrix theory. Formal expressions of the higher order terms are also presented. The nonlinear sigma (NLS) model of random matrix theory, in the variant of the Bosonic replica trick, is also analyzed for the crossover between the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble and Gaussian unitary ensemble. The diagrammatic expansion of the NLS model is interpreted in terms of the periodic orbit theory.

Heat conduction in a three dimensional anharmonic crystal

We perform nonequilibrium simulations of heat conduction in a three dimensional anharmonic lattice. By studying slabs of length N and width W, we examine the cross-over from one-dimensional to three dimensional behavior of the thermal conductivity. We find that for large N, the cross-over takes place at a small value of the aspect ratio W/N. From our numerical data we conclude that the three dimensional system has a finite non-diverging thermal conductivity and thus provide the first verification of Fourier's law in a system without pinning.

Cooling mechanisms in molecular conduction junctions

While heating of a current carrying Ohmic conductors is an obvious consequence of the diffusive nature of the conduction in such systems, current induced cooling has been recently reported in some molecular conduction junctions. In this paper we demonstrate by simple models the possibility of cooling molecular junctions under applied bias, and discuss several mechanisms for such an effect. Our model is characterized by single electron tunneling between electrodes represented by free electron reservoirs through a system characterized by it electron levels, nuclear vibrations and their structures. We consider cooling mechasims resulting from (a) cooling of one electrode surface by tunneling induced depletion of high energy electrons; (b) cooling by coherent sub resonance electronic transport analogous to atomic laser nduced cooling and (c) the incoherent analog of process (b) - cooling by driven activated transport. The non-equilibrium Green function formulation of junction transport is used in the first two cases, while a master equation approach is applied in the analysis of the third.

Fluctuation Theorem in a Quantum-Dot Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

In the present study, we investigate the full counting statistics in a two-terminal Aharonov-Bohm interferometer embedded with an interacting quantum dot. We introduce a novel saddle-point solution for a cumulant-generating function, which satisfies the fluctuation theorem and accounts for the interaction in the mean-field level approximation. Nonlinear transport coefficients satisfy universal relations imposed by microscopic reversibility, though the scattering matrix itself is not reversible. The skewness can be finite even in equilibrium, owing to the interaction and is proportional to the asymmetric component of nonlinear conductance.

Energy Dissipation and Fluctuation-Response in Driven Quantum Langevin Dynamics

Energy dissipation in a nonequilibrium steady state is studied in driven quantum Langevin systems. We study energy dissipation flow to thermal environment, and obtain a general formula for the average rate of energy dissipation using an autocorrelation function for the system variable. This leads to a general expression of the equality that connects the violation of the fluctuation-response relation to the rate of energy dissipation, the classical version of which was first studied by Harada and Sasa. We also point out that the expression depends on coupling form between system and reservoir.

Heat conduction in the disordered Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain

We address the question of the effect of disorder on heat conduction in an anharmonic chain with interactions given by the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) potential. In contrast to the conclusions of an earlier paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 63 (2001)] which found that disorder could induce a finite thermal conductivity at low temperatures, we find no evidence of a finite temperature transition in conducting properties. Instead, we find that at low temperatures, small system size transport properties are dominated by disorder but the asymptotic system size dependence of current is given by the usual FPU result J ~ 1/N^{2/3}. We also present new interesting results on the binary-mass ordered FPU chain.

Coherent destruction of tunneling, dynamic localization and the Landau-Zener formula

We clarify the internal relationship between the coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) for a two-state model and the dynamic localization (DL) for a one-dimensional tight-binding model, under the periodical driving field. The time-evolution of the tight-binding model is reproduced from that of the two-state model by a mapping of equation of motion onto a set of ${\rm SU}(2)$ operators. It is shown that DL is effectively an infinitely large dimensional representation of the CDT in the ${\rm SU}(2)$ operators. We also show that both of the CDT and the DL can be interpreted as a result of destructive interference in repeated Landau-Zener level-crossings.

Fluctuation theorem in quantum heat conduction

We consider steady state heat conduction across a quantum harmonic chain connected to reservoirs modelled by infinite collection of oscillators. The heat, $Q$, flowing across the oscillator in a time interval $τ$ is a stochastic variable and we study the probability distribution function $P(Q)$. In the large $τ$ limit we use the formalism of full counting statistics (FCS) to compute the generating function of $P(Q)$ exactly. We show that $P(Q)$ satisfies the steady state fluctuation theorem (SSFT) regardless of the specifics of system, and it is nongaussian with clear exponential tails. The effect of finite $τ$ and nonlinearity is considered in the classical limit through Langevin simulations. We also obtain predictions of universal heat current fluctuations at low temperatures in clean wires.

Symmetry in Full Counting Statistics, Fluctuation Theorem, and Relations among Nonlinear Transport Coefficients in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

We study full counting statistics of coherent electron transport through multi-terminal interacting quantum-dots under a finite magnetic field. Microscopic reversibility leads to the symmetry of the cumulant generating function, which generalizes the fluctuation theorem in the context of quantum transport. Using this symmetry, we derive the Onsager-Casimir relation in the linear transport regime and universal relations among nonlinear transport coefficients.

Dissipative Landau-Zener transitions of a qubit: bath-specific and universal behavior

We study Landau-Zener transitions in a qubit coupled to a bath at zero temperature. A general formula is derived that is applicable to models with a non-degenerate ground state. We calculate exact transition probabilities for a qubit coupled to either a bosonic or a spin bath. The nature of the baths and the qubit-bath coupling is reflected in the transition probabilities. For diagonal coupling, when the bath causes energy fluctuations of the diabatic qubit states but no transitions between them, the transition probability coincides with the standard LZ probability of an isolated qubit. This result is universal as it does not depend on the specific type of bath. For pure off-diagonal coupling, by contrast, the tunneling probability is sensitive to the coupling strength. We discuss the relevance of our results for experiments on molecular nanomagnets, in circuit QED, and for the fast-pulse readout of superconducting phase qubits.

Semiclassical Approach to Parametric Spectral Correlation with Spin 1/2

The spectral correlation of a chaotic system with spin 1/2 is universally described by the GSE (Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble) of random matrices in the semiclassical limit. In semiclassical theory, the spectral form factor is expressed in terms of the periodic orbits and the spin state is simulated by the uniform distribution on a sphere. In this paper, instead of the uniform distribution, we introduce Brownian motion on a sphere to yield the parametric motion of the energy levels. As a result, the small time expansion of the form factor is obtained and found to be in agreement with the prediction of parametric random matrices in the transition within the GSE universality class. Moreover, by starting the Brownian motion from a point distribution on the sphere, we gradually increase the effect of the spin and calculate the form factor describing the transition from the GOE (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) class to the GSE class.

Quantum state preparation in circuit QED via Landau-Zener tunneling

We study a qubit undergoing Landau-Zener transitions enabled by the coupling to a circuit-QED mode. Summing an infinite-order perturbation series, we determine the exact nonadiabatic transition probability for the qubit, being independent of the frequency of the QED mode. Possible applications are single-photon generation and the controllable creation of qubit-oscillator entanglement.

Gauging a quantum heat bath with dissipative Landau-Zener transitions

We calculate the exact Landau-Zener transitions probabilities for a qubit with arbitrary linear coupling to a bath at zero temperature. The final quantum state exhibits a peculiar entanglement between the qubit and the bath. In the special case of a diagonal coupling, the bath does not influence the transition probability, whatever the speed of the Landau-Zener sweep. It is proposed to use Landau-Zener transitions to determine both the reorganization energy and the integrated spectral density of the bath. Possible applications include circuit QED and molecular nanomagnets.

Semiclassical Theory for Parametric Correlation of Energy Levels

Parametric energy-level correlation describes the response of the energy-level statistics to an external parameter such as the magnetic field. Using semiclassical periodic-orbit theory for a chaotic system, we evaluate the parametric energy-level correlation depending on the magnetic field difference. The small-time expansion of the spectral form factor $K(τ)$ is shown to be in agreement with the prediction of parameter dependent random-matrix theory to all orders in $τ$.

Asymmetric Heat Flow in Mesoscopic Magnetic System

The characteristics of heat flow in a coupled magnetic system are studied. The coupled system is composed of a gapped chain and a gapless chain. The system size is assumed to be quite small so that the mean free path is comparable to it. When the parameter set of the temperatures of reservoirs is exchanged, the characteristics of heat flow are studied with the Keldysh Green function technique. The asymmetry of current is found in the presence of a local equilibrium process at the contact between the magnetic systems. The present setup is realistic and such an effect will be observed in real experiments. We also discuss the simple phenomenological explanation to obtain the asymmetry.

Spectral Form Factor for Chaotic Dynamics in a Weak Magnetic Field

Using semiclassical periodic orbit theory for a chaotic system in a weak magnetic field, we obtain the form factor predicted by Pandey and Mehta's two matrix model up to the third order. The third order contribution has a peculiar term which exists only in the intermediate crossover domain between the GOE (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) and the GUE (Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) universality classes. The exact expression is obtained by taking account of the contribution from encounter regions where orbit loops are connected.

Distribution of the spacing between two adjacent avoided crossings

We consider the frequency at which avoided crossings appear in an energy level structure when an external field is applied to a quantum chaotic system. The distribution of the spacing in the parameter between two adjacent avoided crossings is investigated. Using a random matrix model, we find that the distribution of these spacings is well fitted by a power-law distribution for small spacings. The powers are 2 and 3 for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble and Gaussian unitary ensemble, respectively. We also find that the distributions decay exponentially for large spacings. The distributions in concrete quantum chaotic systems agree with those of the random matrix model.
