Cuspidal edges on focal surfaces of regular surfaces

We investigate geometric invariants of cuspidal edges on focal surfaces of regular surface. In particular, we shall clarify the sign of the singular curvature at a cuspidal edge on a focal surface using singularities of parallel surface of a given surface satisfying certain conditions.

Algebraic approach to maximum likelihood factor analysis

In exploratory factor analysis, model parameters are usually estimated by maximum likelihood method. The maximum likelihood estimate is obtained by solving a complicated multivariate algebraic equation. Since the solution to the equation is usually intractable, it is typically computed with continuous optimization methods, such as Newton-Raphson methods. With this procedure, however, the solution is inevitably dependent on the estimation algorithm and initial value since the log-likelihood function is highly non-concave. Particularly, the estimates of unique variances can result in zero or negative, referred to as improper solutions; in this case, the maximum likelihood estimate can be severely unstable. To delve into the issue of the instability of the maximum likelihood estimate, we compute exact solutions to the multivariate algebraic equation by using algebraic computations. We provide a computationally efficient algorithm based on the algebraic computations specifically optimized for maximum likelihood factor analysis. To be specific, Gr\"oebner basis and cylindrical decomposition are employed, powerful tools for solving the multivariate algebraic equation. Our proposed procedure produces all exact solutions to the algebraic equation; therefore, these solutions are independent of the initial value and estimation algorithm. We conduct Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the characteristics of the maximum likelihood solutions.

Focal surfaces of fronts associated to unbounded principal curvatures

We study focal surfaces of (wave) fronts associated to unbounded principal curvatures near non-degenerate singular points of initial fronts. We give characterizations of singularities of those focal surfaces in terms of types of singularities and geometrical properties of initial fronts. Moreover, we investigate behavior of the Gaussian curvature of the focal surface.

On surfaces obtained as singular loci of normal congruences of frontals with pure-frontal singular points

We study singularities and geometric properties of surfaces given by the singular loci of normal congruence of frontals with pure-frontal singular points. These surfaces consist of the normal ruled surface and focal surfaces of the initial frontal. For the normal ruled surface, we give characterizations of singularities in terms of geometric invariants of the initial frontal defined on the set of singular points. For focal surfaces, we show relation between certain singularities of them and geometric property of the given frontal. Moreover, we consider behavior of Gaussian curvature of focal surfaces of frontal with a $5/2$-cuspidal edge.

Boundedness of geometric invariants near a singularity which is a suspension of a singular curve

Near a singular point of a surface or a curve, geometric invariants diverge in general, and the orders of diverge, in particular the boundedness about these invariants represent geometry of the surface and the curve. In this paper, we study boundedness and orders of several geometric invariants near a singular point of a surface which is a suspension of a singular curve in the plane and those of curves passing through the singular point. We evaluates the orders of Gaussian and mean curvatures and them of geodesic, normal curvatures and geodesic torsion for the curve.

Sparse multivariate regression with missing values and its application to the prediction of material properties

In the field of materials science and engineering, statistical analysis and machine learning techniques have recently been used to predict multiple material properties from an experimental design. These material properties correspond to response variables in the multivariate regression model. This study conducts a penalized maximum likelihood procedure to estimate model parameters, including the regression coefficients and covariance matrix of response variables. In particular, we employ $l_1$-regularization to achieve a sparse estimation of regression coefficients and the inverse covariance matrix of response variables. In some cases, there may be a relatively large number of missing values in response variables, owing to the difficulty in collecting data on material properties. A method to improve prediction accuracy under the situation with missing values incorporates a correlation structure among the response variables into the statistical model. The expectation and maximization algorithm is constructed, which enables application to a data set with missing values in the responses. We apply our proposed procedure to real data consisting of 22 material properties.

Geometry of lightlike locus on mixed type surfaces in Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space from a contact viewpoint

A surface in the Lorentz-Minkowski $3$-space is generally a mixed type surface, namely, it has the lightlike locus. We study local differential geometric properties of such a locus on a mixed type surface. We define a frame field along a lightlike locus, and using it, we define two lightlike ruled surfaces along a lightlike locus which can be regarded as lightlike approximations of the surface along the lightlike locus. We study a relationship of singularities of these lightlike surfaces and differential geometric properties of the lightlike locus. We also consider the intersection curve of two lightlike approximations, which gives a model curve of the lightlike locus.

On Gaussian curvatures and singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges

We show relation between sign of Gaussian curvature of cuspidal edge and geometric invariants through types of singularities of Gauss map. Moreover, we define and characterize positivity/negativity of cusps of Gauss maps by geometric invariants of cuspidal edges, and show relation between sign of cusps and of the Gaussian curvature.

Mixed type surfaces with bounded Gaussian curvature in three-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds

A mixed type surface is a connected regular surface in a Lorentzian 3-manifold with non-empty spacelike and timelike point sets. The induced metric of a mixed type surface is a signature-changing metric, and their lightlike points may be regarded as singular points of such metrics. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of Gaussian curvature at a non-degenerate lightlike point of a mixed type surface. To characterize the boundedness of Gaussian curvature at a non-degenerate lightlike points, we introduce several fundamental invariants along non-degenerate lightlike points, such as the lightlike singular curvature and the lightlike normal curvature. Moreover, using the results by Pelletier and Steller, we obtain the Gauss-Bonnet type formula for mixed type surfaces with bounded Gaussian curvature.

Surfaces of revolution of frontals in the Euclidean space

For Legendre curves, we consider surfaces of revolution of frontals. The surface of revolution of a frontal can be considered as a framed base surface. We give the curvatures and basic invariants for surfaces of revolution by using the curvatures of Legendre curves. Moreover, we give properties of surfaces of revolution with singularities and cones.

Singularities of Gauss maps of wave fronts with non-degenerate singular points

We study singularities of Gauss maps of fronts and give characterizations of types of singularities of Gauss maps by geometric properties of fronts which are related to behavior of bounded principal curvatures. Moreover, we investigate relation between a kind of boundedness of Gaussian curvatures near cuspidal edges and types of singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges. Further, we consider extended height functions on fronts with non-degenerate singular points.

Principal curvatures and parallel surfaces of wave fronts

We give criteria for which a principal curvature becomes a bounded $C^\infty$-function at non-degenerate singular points of wave fronts by using geometric invariants. As applications, we study singularities of parallel surfaces and extended distance squared functions of wave fronts. Moreover, we relate these singularities to some geometric invariants of fronts.
