Anomalous transport independent of gauge fields

We show that three-dimensional trace anomalies lead to new universal anomalous transport effects on a conformally-flat spacetime with background scalar fields. In contrast to conventional anomalous transports in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) or quantum electrodynamics (QED), our current is independent of background gauge fields. Therefore, our anomalous transport survives even in the absence of vector-like external sources. By manipulating background fields, we suggest a setup to detect our anomalous transport. If one turns on scalar couplings in a finite interval and considers a conformal factor depending just on (conformal) time, we find anomalous transport localized at the interfaces of the interval flows perpendicularly to the interval. The magnitude of the currents is the same on the two interfaces but with opposite directions. Without the assumption on scalar couplings, and only assuming the conformal factor depending solely on (conformal) time as usually done in cosmology, one also finds the three-dimensional Hubble parameter naturally appears in our current.

Two-dimensional Anomaly, Orbifolding, and Boundary States

We study anomalies of discrete internal global symmetry $G$ in two-dimensional rational conformal field theories based on twisted torus partition functions. The anomaly of $G$ can be seen from the noncommutativity of two symmetry lines inserted along the nontrivial cycles of two-torus and we propose a criterion to detect the anomaly, which agrees with the truncated modular $S$-matrix approach. The obstruction for orbifolding has been recently interpreted as a mixed anomaly between $G$ and large diffeomorphisms. We clarify the relations among anomaly-free conditions, orbifoldable conditions, and invariant boundary state condition, focusing on Wess-Zumino-Witten models.

First-class constraints and the BV formalism

Employing the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism, we present a systematic and simple prescription to derive (first-class) constraints including the Hamiltonian constraint (a.k.a. flow equation), which plays pivotal role in holographic computation of Weyl anomalies. In this method, you do not have to compute canonical momenta nor Hamiltonians. Thus it may equip us with a `Lagrangian treatment' of constrained systems. We also point out an interesting analogy between antifields and first-class constraints.

On three-dimensional trace anomaly from holographic local RG

Odd-dimensional quantum field theories (QFTs) can have nonzero trace anomalies if external fields are introduced and some ingredients needed to make Lorentz scalars with appropriate mass dimensions (or weights) are supplied. We have studied a three-dimensional QFT and explicitly computed the trace of the stress tensor using the holographic local renormalization group (RG). We have checked some properties of vector beta functions and the Wess-Zumino consistency condition, however, found the anomalies vanish on fixed points. We clarify what is responsible for the vanishing trace anomalies.

AdS/CFT and local renormalization group with gauge fields

We revisit a study of local renormalization group (RG) with background gauge fields incorporated using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Starting with a $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk gravity coupled to scalars and gauge fields, we derive a local RG equation from a flow equation by working in the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the bulk theory. The Gauss's law constraint associated with gauge symmetry plays an important role. RG flows of the background gauge fields are governed by vector $β$-functions, and some interesting properties of them are known to follow. We give a systematic rederivation of them on the basis of the flow equation. Fixing an ambiguity of local counterterms in such a manner that is natural from the viewpoint of the flow equation, we determine all the coefficients uniquely appearing in the trace of the stress tensor for $d=4$. A relation between a choice of schemes and a Virial current is discussed. As a consistency check, these are found to satisfy the integrability conditions of local RG transformations. From these results, we are led to a proof of a holographic $c$-theorem by finding out a full family of schemes where a trace anomaly coefficient is related with a holographic $c$-function.
