Number theoretic properties of Wronskians of Andrews-Gordon series

For positive integers $1\leq i\leq k$, we consider the arithmetic properties of quotients of Wronskians in certain normalizations of the Andrews-Gordon $q$-series $$ \prod_{1\leq n\not \equiv 0,\pm i\pmod{2k+1}}\frac{1}{1-q^n}. $$ This study is motivated by their appearance in conformal field theory, where these series are essentially the irreducible characters of $(2,2k+1)$ Virasoro minimal models. We determine the vanishing of such Wronskians, a result whose proof reveals many partition identities. For example, if $P_{b}(a;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ into parts which are not congruent to $0, \pm a\pmod b$, then for every positive integer $n$ we have $$ P_{27}(12; n)=P_{27}(6;n-1) + P_{27}(3;n-2). $$ We also show that these quotients classify supersingular elliptic curves in characteristic $p$. More precisely, if $2k+1=p$, where $p\geq 5$ is prime, and the quotient is non-zero, then it is essentially the locus of characteristic $p$ supersingular $j$-invariants in characteristic $p$.

Reduction of CM elliptic curves and modular function congruences

We study congruences of the form F(j(z)) | U(p) = G(j(z)) mod p, where U(p) is the p-th Hecke operator, j is the basic modular invariant 1/q+744+196884q+... for SL2(Z), and F,G are polynomials with integer coefficients. Using the interplay between singular (a.k.a. CM) j-invariants in characteristic zero and supersingular ones in characteristic p, we obtain such congruences in which F is the minimal polynomial of a CM j-invariant, and give a sufficient condition for G to be a constant polynomial in these congruences.

Baxter Algebras and Hopf Algebras

By applying a recent construction of free Baxter algebras, we obtain a new class of Hopf algebras that generalizes the classical divided power Hopf algebra. We also study conditions under which these Hopf algebras are isomorphic.

Distribution of the partition function modulo m

Ramanujan (and others) proved that the partition function satisfies a number of striking congruences modulo powers of 5, 7 and 11. A number of further congruences were shown by the works of Atkin, O'Brien, and Newman. In this paper we prove that there are infinitely many such congruences for every prime modulus exceeding 3. In addition, we provide a simple criterion guaranteeing the truth of Newman's conjecture for any prime modulus exceeding 3 (recall that Newman's conjecture asserts that the partition function hits every residue class modulo a given integer M infinitely often).

Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms modulo ell

For each prime $\ell$, let $|\cdot|_\ell$ be an extension to $\bar \Q$ of the usual $\ell$-adic absolute value on $\Q$. Suppose $g(z) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty c(n)q^n \in M_{k+\half}(N)$ is an eigenform whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic integers. Under a mild condition, for all but finitely many primes $\ell$ there are infinitely many square-free integers $m$ for which $|c(m)|_\ell = 1$. Consequently we obtain indivisibility results for ``algebraic parts'' of central critical values of modular $L$-functions and class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields. These results partially answer a conjecture of Kolyvagin regarding Tate-Shafarevich groups of modular elliptic curves. Similar results were obtained earlier by Jochnowitz by a completely different method. Our method uses standard facts about Galois representations attached to modular forms, and pleasantly uncovers surprising Kronecker-style congruences for $L$-function values. For example if $Δ(z)$ is Ramanujan's cusp form and $g(z)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}c(n)q^n$ is the cusp form for which $$L(Δ_D,6)=\fracwithdelims()π{D}^6\frac{\sqrt{D}}{5!}\frac{< Δ(z),Δ(z)>} {< g(z),g(z)>}\cdot c(D)^2,$$ for fundamental discriminants $D>0,$ then for $N\geq 1$ $$\sum_{k=-\infty}^\infty c(N-k^2) \equiv \half \sum_{d|N}(χ_{-1}(d)+χ_{-1}(N/d))d^6 \pmod {61}. \tag{0}$$
