Optimal Control Problems Governed by 1-D Kobayashi-Warren-Carter Type Systems

This paper is devoted to the study of a class of optimal control problems governed by 1-D Kobayashi-Warren-Carter type systems, which are based on a phase-field model of grain boundary motion, proposed by [Kobayashi et al, Physica D, 140, 141-150, 2000]. The class consists of an optimal control problem for a physically realistic state-system of Kobayashi-Warren-Carter type, and its regularized approximating problems. The results of this paper are stated in three Main Theorems 1-3. The first Main Theorem 1 is concerned with the solvability and continuous dependence for the state-systems. Meanwhile, the second Main Theorem 2 is concerned with the solvability of optimal control problems, and some semi-continuous association in the class of our optimal control problems. Finally, in the third Main Theorem 3, we derive the first order necessary optimality conditions for optimal controls of the regularized approximating problems. By taking the approximating limit, we also derive the optimality conditions for the optimal controls for the physically realistic problem.

Energy-dissipation in a coupled system of Allen-Cahn type equation and Kobayashi-Warren-Carter type model of grain boundary motion

In this paper, we consider a system of initial boundary value problems for parabolic equations, as a generalized version of the "$ ϕ$-$ η$-$ θ$ model" of grain boundary motion, proposed by Kobayashi [16]. The system is a coupled system of: an Allen--Cahn type equation as in (1.1) with a given temperature source; and a phase-field model of grain boundary motion, known as "Kobayashi--Warren--Carter type model". The focus of the study is on a special kind of solution, called energy-dissipative solution, which is to reproduce the energy-dissipation of the governing energy in time. Under suitable assumptions, two Main Theorems, concerned with: the existence of energy-dissipative solution; and the large-time behavior; will be demonstrated as the results of this paper.

On boundary detachment phenomena for the total variation flow with dynamic boundary conditions

We combine the total variation flow suitable for crystal modeling and image analysis with the dynamic boundary conditions. We analyze the behavior of facets at the parts of the boundary where these conditions are imposed. We devote particular attention to the radially symmetric data. We observe that the boundary layer detachment actually can happen at concave parts of the boundary

A class of parabolic systems associated with optimal controls of grain boundary motions

We propose a semi-discrete numerical scheme and establish well-posedness of a class of parabolic systems. Such systems naturally arise while studying the optimal control of grain boundary motions. The latter is typically described using a set of parabolic variational inequalities. We use a regularization approach to deal with the variational inequality. The resulting optimization problem is a nonsmooth, nonconvex, and nonlinear programming problem. This is a long term project where in the current work we are first analyzing systems of PDEs associated with the regularized optimal control problem. Such a system is a set of highly coupled parabolic equations, and proposes significant analytical and numerical challenges. We establish well-posedness of this system. In addition, we design a provably convergent semi-discrete (time discrete spatially continuous) numerical scheme to solve the system. We have developed several new tools during the course of this paper that can be applied to a wider class of coupled systems.

Weak formulation for singular diffusion equation with dynamic boundary condition

In this paper, we propose a weak formulation of the singular diffusion equation subject to the dynamic boundary condition. The weak formulation is based on a reformulation method by an evolution equation including the subdifferential of a governing convex energy. Under suitable assumptions, the principal results of this study are stated in forms of Main Theorems A and B, which are respectively to verify: the adequacy of the weak formulation; the common property between the weak solutions and those in regular problems of standard PDEs.

Energy dissipative solutions to the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system

In this paper we study a variational system of two parabolic PDEs, called the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system, which models the grain boundary motion in a polycrystal. The focus of the study is the existence of solutions to this system which dissipate the associated energy functional. We obtain existence of this type of solutions via a suitable approximation of the energy functional with Laplacians and an extra regularization of the weighted total variation term of the energy. As a byproduct of this result, we also prove some $Γ$-convergence results concerning weighted total variations and the corresponding time-dependent cases. Finally, the regularity obtained for the solutions together with the energy dissipation property, permits us to completely characterize the $ω$-limit set of the solutions.

Phase-field systems for grain boundary motions under isothermal solidifications

Two main existence theorems are proved for two nonstandard systems of parabolic initial-boundary value problems. The systems are based on the "$ ϕ$-$ η$-$ θ$ model" proposed by Kobayashi [RIMS Kokyuroku, 1210 (2001), 68-77] as a phase-field model of planar grain boundary motion under isothermal solidification. Although each of the systems has specific characteristics and mathematical difficulties, the proofs of the main theorems are based on the time discretization method by means of a common approximating problem. As a consequence, we provide a uniform solution method for a wide scope of parabolic systems associated with the $ ϕ$-$ η$-$ θ$ model.

A class of quasi-linear Allen-Cahn type equations with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we consider a class of coupled systems of PDEs, denoted by (ACE)$_{\varepsilon}$ for $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $. For each $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $, the system (ACE)$_{\varepsilon}$ consists of an Allen-Cahn type equation in a bounded spacial domain $ Ω$, and another Allen-Cahn type equation on the smooth boundary $ Γ:= \partial Ω$, and besides, these coupled equations are transmitted via the dynamic boundary conditions. In particular, the equation in $ Ω$ is derived from the non-smooth energy proposed by Visintin in his monography "Models of phase transitions": hence, the diffusion in $ Ω$ is provided by a quasilinear form with singularity. The objective of this paper is to build a mathematical method to obtain meaningful $ L^2 $-based solutions to our systems, and to see some robustness of (ACE)$_\varepsilon$ with respect to $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $. On this basis, we will prove two Main Theorems 1 and 2, which will be concerned with the well-posedness of (ACE)$_\varepsilon$ for each $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $, and the continuous dependence of solutions to (ACE)$_\varepsilon$ for the variations of $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $, respectively.
