Edge-Enhanced Diffractive Neural Networks Based on Spin-Multiplexed Nonlocal Metasurfaces

Single-layer diffractive neural networks often face classification accuracy bottlenecks due to limited wavefront modulation capabilities. Edge detection, as an optical image processing technique, extracts image contours and offers a promising way to simplify classification tasks. However, integrating edge detection and DNN-based classification on a single chip remains a challenge. Here, we propose an integrated nonlocal meta-platform that achieves all-optical edge detection and DNN-based classification via spin-multiplexing. By exploiting the dispersion properties of the nonlocal Huygens' metasurface, the co-polarized component in the output light performs momentum-space filtering for real-time edge detection. The cross-polarized component undergoes geometric phase modulation to execute image classification within the DNN. We couple quasi-bound states in the continuum and magnetic dipole resonances in crescent-shaped nanopillars, achieving a high polarization conversion efficiency of approximately $55\%$. This edge-enhanced DNN architecture significantly reduces data redundancy, elevating the classification accuracy of the single-layer network on the MNIST dataset from $64.2\%$ to $80.7\%$. Our work provides a compact, high-efficiency solution for integrated all-optical machine vision and intelligent photonic computing.

Tunable edge and depth sensing via phase-change nonlocal metasurfaces

Performing simultaneous depth-of-field (DoF) extension and edge enhancement within a single optical element remains a fundamental challenge in advanced imaging. Here, we propose a wavelength-tunable nonlocal Huygens' metasurface capable of simultaneously extracting depth and edge features of images in a single-shot exposure. Using the selective polarization response of the Huygens' metasurfaces, the circularly polarized converted component undergoes geometric phase modulation for wavefront shaping to extend the DoF, while the non-converted component acts as a spatial frequency filter to enhance edge contrast. The integration of a phase-change material, Sb$_{2}$S$_{3}$, enables continuous tuning of the resonance wavelength across a range of 100 nm by modulating its refractive index, granting the system excellent broadband spectral adaptability. This work offers a novel and compact solution for real-time depth sensing and feature extraction in applications such as autonomous navigation and biomedical imaging.

Continuous Varifocal Metalens Based on Phase-Change Material

Metasurfaces have provided new opportunities for the realization of flat lenses, among which tunable metalenses have garnered considerable attention due to their flexible functionalities. In this paper, we present a continuously tunable metalens based on the phase-change material Sb$_{2}$S$_{3}$, which enables precise and continuous focal length control through the transition of states. Under the excitation of linearly polarized light at 1550 nm, phase compensation is provided by changing the crystallization state of the Sb$_{2}$S$_{3}$ nanopillars, allowing the focal length to continuously shift between 36 $\mu$m and 48 $\mu$m. At the same time, the metalens maintains a high focusing efficiency over 75%. This approach provides greater design flexibility and broader applicability across diverse applications. By reducing the reliance on polarized light sources, it enhances device integration and tunability, paving the way for new opportunities in the practical implementation of metalenses in advanced optical imaging and nanophotonics.
