Instability thresholds for de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes in holographic semiclassical gravity

We study the stability of $d$-dimensional ($d=3,4,5$) de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes within the framework of semiclassical gravity sourced by a strongly coupled quantum field with a gravity dual. Our stability results are derived from a careful analysis of the $d$-dimensional Lichnerowicz equation with mass-squared $m^2$ and of semiclassical equations involving the dimensionless parameter $\gamma_d$. For $d=3$, we find that Minkowski spacetime is always unstable against perturbations, whereas de Sitter spacetime becomes stable when a dimensionless parameter $\gamma_3$ exceeds a critical value. In $d=4$, both de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes become unstable when the parameter $\gamma_4$ exceeds its critical value. In contrast, in $d=5$, de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes remain stable for almost all values of the parameter $\gamma_5$, except for a regime in which higher-curvature corrections become comparable to the Einstein tensor.

Wormholes as perturbations of near-horizon black hole geometries: no-go theorems within effective field theories

We reformulate the construction of wormhole solutions as perturbations around near-horizon geometries of near-extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black holes in four dimensions and equal-angular-momenta Myers-Perry black holes in five dimensions. When the negative Casimir energy is taken as the source, this framework reduces to the Maldacena-Milekhin-Popov construction for magnetically charged wormholes. We then show that, in contrast, such perturbative constructions cannot be realized within the effective field theory approach to higher-derivative corrections. Remarkably, this conclusion holds irrespective of the specific form of the correction terms. The key observation is that the enhanced symmetries in the near-horizon region severely constrain the effective energy-momentum tensor near the throat. This prevents the formation of the traversable throat structure. Our analysis therefore establishes no-go theorems: traversable wormholes cannot arise perturbatively from Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m or Myers-Perry black holes in an effective field theory approach. Their realization would require either new ingredients, such as Casimir energy, or black holes with reduced symmetry.

Energy Conditions and Quantum Information

The concept of energy lies at the foundation of physical science. In general relativity and quantum field theory, the positivity and conservation of energy are encapsulated by the so-called energy-momentum tensor and the energy conditions. In recent efforts to unify fundamental physics with quantum information, the energy conditions have come to play a crucial role in establishing numerous theorems. In this article, we review the basics of energy conditions in general relativity and their applications in gravitational physics, quantum field theory, and the holographic principle. Through these applications, we explore the profound connection between the energy conditions and quantum information

Semiclassical Rotating AdS Black Holes with Quantum Hair in Holography

In the context of the AdS/CFT duality, we study semiclassical stationary rotating AdS black holes with non-trivial quantum hair in three and five dimensions. We construct these solutions by perturbing the BTZ black hole and the five-dimensional Myers-Perry AdS black hole according to holographic semiclassical equations. In the three-dimensional case, the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor diverges as $\sim 1/\lambda^n~(n=1,2)$ along a radial null geodesic as the affine parameter $\lambda$ approaches zero at the Cauchy horizon, depending on the type of perturbation. In the five-dimensional case, most hairy solutions exhibit strong divergences, either in the stress-energy tensor or in the parallelly propagated Riemann components, along the radial null geodesic crossing the Cauchy horizon. Nevertheless, there exists a specific class of semiclassical solutions that retain a $C^0$-regular Cauchy horizon, where perturbations remain bounded. For extremal black holes, the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor diverges along a radial null geodesic transverse to the event horizon in both three and five dimensions, even though all components of the perturbed metric vanish in this limit.

The higher dimensional instabilities of AdS in holographic semiclassical gravity

In the framework of AdS/CFT duality, we consider the semiclassical problem in general quadratic theory of gravity. We construct asymptotically global AdS and hyperbolic~(topological) AdS black hole solutions with non-trivial quantum hair in $4$ and $5$-dimensions by perturbing the maximally symmetric AdS solutions to the holographic semiclassical equations. We find that under certain conditions, our semiclassical solution of hyperbolic AdS black holes can be dynamically unstable against linear perturbations. In this holographic semiclassical context, we also study the thermodynamic instability of the hairy solutions in the $5$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet theory by computing the free energy and show that depending on the parameter of the Gauss-Bonnet theory, the free energy can be smaller than that of the background maximally symmetric AdS solution in both the global AdS and hyperbolic AdS black hole cases.

Cutoff Scale of Quadratic Gravity from Quantum Focusing Conjecture

We derive the cutoff length scale of the quadratic gravity in $d \geq 5$ dimensional spacetime by demanding that the quantum focusing conjecture for the smeared quantum expansion holds at the classical level. The cutoff scale has different dependence on the spacetime dimension depending on the sign of the coupling constant of the quadratic gravity. We also investigate a concrete example of the 5-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime and directly confirm that the quantum focusing conjecture holds when the quantum expansion is smeared over the scale larger than our cutoff scale.

Symmetry breaking of $3$-dimensional AdS in holographic semiclassical gravity

We show that $3$-dimensional AdS spacetime can be semiclassically unstable due to strongly interacting quantum field effects. In our previous paper, we have pointed out the possibility of such an instability of AdS$_3$ by inspecting linear perturbations of the (covering space of) static BTZ black hole with AdS${}_4$ gravity dual in the context of holographic semiclassical problems. In the present paper, we further study this issue from thermodynamic viewpoint by constructing asymptotically AdS$_3$ semiclassical solutions and computing free energies of the solutions. We find two asymptotically AdS${}_3$ solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equations with non-vanishing source term: the one whose free energy is smaller than that of the BTZ with vanishing source term and the other whose free energy is smaller than that of the global AdS$_3$ with no horizon (thus manifestly zero-temperature background). The instability found in this paper implies the breakdown of the maximal symmetries of AdS$_3$, and its origin is different from the well-known semiclassical linear instability since our holographic semiclassical Einstein equations in $3$-dimensions do not involve higher order derivative terms.

Flows of Rotating Extremal Attractor Black Holes

We investigate the attractor mechanism of five-dimensional extremal rotating black holes in Einstein gravity minimally coupled with a multiplet complex scalar. By imposing regularity on the horizon, we show that the only possible attractor value of the scalar field is zero in our setup and that the local geometry is determined by the Myers-Perry black hole solution. We numerically obtain the extremal AdS black hole solutions interpolating the near horizon geometry to the asymptotic AdS spacetime under the existence of a bare potential of the scalar field. The black hole energy and the angular momenta are discretized for the usual Dirichlet boundary condition. Under the general boundary condition, we also find hairy extremal AdS black holes in which the energy is smaller than that of the extremal Myers-Perry AdS black hole solution for the same angular momentum.

Semiclassical Einstein equations from holography and boundary dynamics

In this paper, we consider how to formulate semiclassical problems in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, based on the proposal of Compere and Marolf. Our prescription involves the effective action with self-action term for boundary dynamical fields, which can be viewed as imposing mixed boundary conditions for the gravity dual. We derive the semiclassical Einstein equations sourced by boundary CFT stress-energy tensor. Analyzing perturbations of the holographic semiclassical Einstein equations, we find a universal parameter $\gamma_d$ which controls the contribution from boundary CFTs and specifies dynamics on the AdS boundary. As a simple example, we examine the semiclassical Einstein equations in $3$-dimensions with $4$-dimensional AdS gravity dual, and show that the boundary BTZ black hole with vanishing expectation value of the stress-energy tensor becomes unstable due to the backreaction from quantum stress-energy tensor when the parameter $\gamma_d$ exceeds a certain critical value.

Flows of Extremal Attractor Black Holes

We study flows of non-supersymmetric attractor black holes in the context of gauge/gravity correspondence. As our bulk theory, we consider the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton system with a single dilaton field coupled to two Maxwell fields and make a relevant deformation by adding a bare potential to the dilaton field. We find two types of extremal black hole solutions with attractor mechanism: The one smooth at the horizon and the other non-smooth. We show from both bulk and boundary theory perspective that the former is thermodynamically unstable, while the latter is stable.

The averaged null energy condition on holographic evaporating black holes

We examine the averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for strongly coupled fields, along the event horizon of an evaporating black hole by using the AdS/CFT duality. First, we consider a holographic model of a $3$-dimensional evaporating black hole with a perturbed 4-dimensional black droplet geometry as the bulk dual, and investigate how negative energy flux going into the boundary black hole horizon appears. We show that the ingoing negative energy flux always appears at the boundary black hole horizon when the horizon area decreases. Second, we test the ANEC in a holographic model of a $4$-dimensional asymptotically flat dynamical black hole, which describes the formation and subsequent evaporation of a spherically symmetric black hole. By applying the "bulk-no-shortcut principle", we show that the ANEC is always satisfied when the local null energy is averaged with a wieght function along the incomplete null geodesic on the event horizon from beginning of the formation to the final instant of the black hole evaporation. Our results indicate that the total ingoing negative energy flux is compensated by a large amount of positive energy flux in the early stage of the black hole formation.

The first law of entanglement entropy in AdS black hole backgrounds

The first law for entanglement entropy in CFT in an odd-dimensional asymptotically AdS black hole is studied by using the AdS/CFT duality. The entropy of CFT considered here is due to the entanglement between two subsystems separated by the horizon of the AdS black hole, which itself is realized as the conformal boundary of a black droplet in even-dimensional global AdS bulk spacetime. In $(2+1)$-dimensional CFT, the first law is shown to be always satisfied by analyzing a class of metric perturbations of the exact solution of a $4$-dimensional black droplet. In $(4+1)$-dimensions, the first law for CFT is shown to hold under the Neumann boundary condition at a certain bulk hypersurface anchored to the conformal boundary of the boundary AdS black hole. From the boundary view point, this Neumann condition yields there being no energy flux across the boundary of the boundary AdS black hole. Furthermore, the asymptotic geometry of a $6$-dimensional small AdS black droplet is constructed as the gravity dual of our $(4+1)$-dimensional CFT, which exhibits a negative energy near the spatial infinity, as expected from vacuum polarization.

Is quantum teleportation beyond horizon possible?

We ask whether quantum teleportation from the outside to the inside of a horizon is possible, using entanglement extracted from a vacuum. We first calculate analytically, within the perturbation theory, entanglement extracted from the Minkowski vacuum into a pair of an inertial and an accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors, which are initially in the ground states and interact with a neutral massless scalar field for an infinitely long time. We find that entanglement can be extracted, but is "fragile", depending on adiabaticity of switching of the detectors at the infinite past and future. We then consider the standard scheme of quantum teleportation utilizing the extracted entanglement, and find that the standard teleportation is not superior to channels without entanglement.

The averaged null energy conditions in even dimensional curved spacetimes from AdS/CFT duality

We consider averaged null energy conditions (ANEC) for strongly coupled quantum field theories in even (two and four) dimensional curved spacetimes by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. In the same context but in odd-dimensions, the present authors previously derived a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC), which is a version of the ANEC with a certain weight function for conformal invariance. In even-dimensions, however, one has to deal with gravitational conformal anomalies, which make relevant formulas much more complicated than the odd-dimensional case. In two-dimensions, we derive the ANEC by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle. In four-dimensions, we derive an inequality which essentially provides the lower-bound for the ANEC with a weight function. For this purpose, and also to get some geometric insights into gravitational conformal anomalies, we express the stress-energy formulas in terms of geometric quantities such as the expansions of boundary null geodesics and a quasi-local mass of the boundary geometry. We argue when the lowest bound is achieved and also discuss when the averaged value of the null energy can be negative, considering a simple example of a spatially compact universe with wormhole throat.

Conformally invariant averaged null energy condition from AdS/CFT

We study the compatibility of the AdS/CFT duality with the bulk and boundary causality, and derive a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC) for quantum field theories in 3 and 5-dimensional curved boundaries. This is the generalization of the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski spacetime to curved boundaries, where null energy is averaged along the null line with appropriate weight for conformal invariance. For this purpose we take, as our guiding principle, the no-bulk-shortcut theorem of Gao and Wald, which essentially asserts that when going from one point to another on the boundary, one cannot take a "shortcut through the bulk". We also discuss the relationship between bulk vs boundary causality and the weak cosmic censorship.

Entanglement extracted from vacuum into accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors and energy conservation

We consider a pair of two-level Unruh-DeWitt detectors accelerated uniformly in the Minkowski vacuum of a massless neutral scalar field, and analyze, within the perturbation theory, the entanglement extracted from the vacuum into the Unruh-DeWitt detectors when the switching of the detectors are performed adiabatically enough at the asymptotic past and future. We consider the cases where the detectors are accelerated parallelly, anti-parallelly, and in differently orientated directions. We show that entanglement is extracted if they are accelerated anti-parallelly and the ratios of the excitation energy to the magnitude of the acceleration coincide between the two detectors. On the other hand, we find the detectors are not entangled when the detectors are accelerated parallelly or in orientated directions. We discuss these results from the viewpoint of the energy conservation associated with the timelike boost Killing vector fields tangent to the worldlines of the detectors.

Achronal ANEC, Weak Cosmic Censorship, and AdS/CFT duality

We examine the achronal averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for a class of conformal field theories~(CFT) at strong coupling in curved spacetime. By applying the AdS/CFT duality, we find holographic models which violate the achronal ANEC for $3+1$ and $4+1$-dimensional boundary theories. In our model, the bulk spacetime is an asymptotically AdS vacuum bubble solution with neither causality violation nor singularities. The conformal boundary of our bubble solution is asymptotically flat and is causally proper in the sense that a "fastest null geodesics" connecting any two points on the boundary must lie entirely on the boundary. We show that conversely, if the spacetime fails to have this causally proper nature, then there must be a naked singularity in the bulk.

Violation of the quantum null-energy condition in a holographic wormhole and infrared effects

We examine the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) for a $2+1$-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) at strong coupling in the background of a wormhole spacetime by employing the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we numerically construct a novel $3+1$-dimensional vacuum AdS black hole solution with non-trivial topology, which is dual to a wormhole geometry connecting two flat universes. Although the bulk null energy condition (NEC) is not violated, the NEC for the holographic stress-energy tensor is violated near the wormhole throat. Next, we investigate the entanglement entropy for a half-space anchored to the boundary wormhole throat. We propose a natural prescription for regularizing the IR divergent part of the entanglement entropy and show that the QNEC is violated at the throat. This is the first counterexample to the QNEC, indicating that IR effects are crucial.
