Simple purely infinite $C^*$-algebras associated with normal subshifts

We will introduce a notion of normal subshifts. A subshift $(Λ,σ)$ is said to be normal if it satisfies a certain synchronizing property called $λ$-synchronizing and is infinite as a set. We have lots of purely infinite simple $C^*$-algebras from normal subshifts including irreducible infinite sofic shifts, Dyck shifts, $β$-shifts, and so on. Eventual conjugacy of one-sided normal subshifts and topological conjugacy of two-sided normal subshifts are characterized in terms of the associated $C^*$-algebras and the associated stabilized $C^*$-algebras with its diagonals and gauge actions, respectively.

Subshifts, $λ$-graph bisystems and $C^*$-algebras

We introduce a notion of $λ$-graph bisystem. It consists of a pair $({\frak L}^-, {\frak L}^+)$ of two labeled Bratteli diagrams ${\frak L}^-, {\frak L}^+$ over alphabets $Σ^-, Σ^+$, respectively, and satisfy certain compatibility condition of their labeling on edges. Its matrix presentation is called a symbolic matrix bisystem. We first show that any $λ$-graph bisystem presents subshifts and conversely any subshift is presented by a $λ$-graph bisystem, called the canonical $λ$-graph bisystem for the subshift. We introduce a notion of properly strong shift equivalence on symbolic matrix bisystems and show that two subshifts are topologically conjugate if and only if their canonical symbolic matrix bisystems are properly strong shift equivalent. A $λ$-graph bisystem $({\frak L}^-, {\frak L}^+)$ yields a pair of $C^*$-algebra written ${\mathcal{O}_{{\frak L}^-}^+}, {\mathcal{O}_{{\frak L}^+}^-}$. We show that the $C^*$-algebras are universal unique $C^*$-algebras subject to certain operator relations among canonical generators encoded by $λ$-graph bisystem $({\frak L}^-, {\frak L}^+).$ If a $λ$-graph bisystem comes from a $λ$-graph system of a finite directed graph, then the associated subshift is the two-sided topological Markov shift $(Λ_A, σ_A)$ by its transition matrix $A$ of the graph, and the associated $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal{O}_{{\frak L}^-}^+}$ is isomorphic to ${\mathcal{O}}_A,$ whereas the other $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal{O}_{{\frak L}^+}^-}$ is isomorphic to $C(Λ_A)\rtimes_{σ_A^*}\mathbb{Z}$ of the commutative $C^*$-algebra $C(Λ_A)$ on $Λ_A$ by the automorphism induced by the homeomorphism of the shift $σ_A.$ This phenomena shows a duality between ${\mathcal{O}}_A$ and $C(Λ_A)\rtimes_{σ_A^*}\mathbb{Z}$.

An étale equivalence relation on a configuration space arising from a subshift and related $C^*$-algebras

A $λ$-graph bisystem $\mathcal{L}$ consists of two labeled Bratteli diagrams $(\mathcal{L}^-,\mathcal{L}^+)$, that presents a two-sided subshift $Λ_\mathcal{L}$. We will construct a compact totally disconnected metric space with a shift homeomorphism consisting of two-dimensional configurations from a $λ$-graph bisystem. The configuration space has a certain étale AF-equivalence relation written $R_{\mathcal{L}}$ with a natural shift homeomorphism $σ_{\mathcal{L}}$ coming from the shift homeomorphism $σ_{Λ_{\mathcal{L}}}$ on the subshift $Λ_{\mathcal{L}}$. The equivalence relation $R_{\mathcal{L}}$ yields an AF-algebra ${\mathcal{F}}_{\mathcal{L}}$ with an automorphism $ρ_{\mathcal{L}}$ on it. We will study invariance of the étale equivalence relation $R_{\mathcal{L}}$, the groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{L}}=R_{\mathcal{L}}\rtimes_{σ_{\mathcal{L}}}{\mathbb{Z}}$ and the groupoid $C^*$-algebras $C^*(R_{\mathcal{L}})$, $C^*(\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{L}})$ under topological conjugacy of the presenting two-sided subshifts.

$C^*$-algebras associated with two-sided subshifts

This paper is a continuation of the paper entitled "Subshifts, $λ$-graph bisystems and $C^*$-algebras", arXiv:1904.06464. A $λ$-graph bisystem consists of a pair of two labeled Bratteli diagrams satisfying certain compatibility condition on their edge labeling. For any two-sided subshift $Λ$, there exists a $λ$-graph bisystem satisfying a special property called FPCC. We will construct an AF-algebra ${\mathcal{F}}_{\frak L}$ with shift automorphism $ρ_{\frak L}$ from a $λ$-graph bisystem $({\frak L}^-,{\frak L}^+)$, and define a $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal R}_{\frak L}$ by the crossed product ${\mathcal{F}}_{\frak L}\rtimes_{ρ_{\frak L}}\mathbb{Z}$. It is a two-sided subshift analogue of asymptotic Ruelle algebras constructed from Smale spaces. If $λ$-graph bisystems come from two-sided subshifts, these $C^*$-algebras are proved to be invariant under topological conjugacy of the underlying subshifts. We will present a simplicity condition of the $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal R}_{\frak L}$ and the K-theory formulas of the $C^*$-algebras ${\mathcal{F}}_{\frak L}$ and ${\mathcal R}_{\frak L}$. The K-group for the AF-algebra ${\mathcal{F}}_{\frak L}$ is regarded as a two-sided extension of the dimension group of subshifts.

Asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence of Smale spaces and Ruelle algebras

In the first part of the paper, we introduce notions of asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence and asymptotic conjugacy in Smale spaces and characterize them in terms of their asymptotic Ruelle algebras with their dual actions. In the second part, we introduce a groupoid $C^*$-algebra which is an extended version of the asymptotic Ruelle algebra from a Smale space and study the extended Ruelle algebras from the view points of Cuntz--Krieger algebras. As a result, the asymptotic Ruelle algebra is realized as a fixed point algebra of the extended Ruelle algebra under certain circle action.

Flow equivalence of topological Markov shifts and Ruelle algebras

We study discrete flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts by using extended Ruelle algebras. We characterize flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of conjugacy of certain actions weighted by ceiling functions of two-dimensional torus on the stabilized extended Ruelle algebras for the Markov shifts.

Topological conjugacy of topological Markov shifts and Ruelle algebras

We will characterize topologically conjugate two-sided topological Markov shifts $(\bar{X}_A,\barσ_A)$ in terms of the associated asymptotic Ruelle $C^*$-algebras ${\mathcal{R}}_A$ with its commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(\bar{X}_A)$ and the canonical circle actions. We will also show that extended Ruelle algebras ${\widetilde{\mathcal{R}}}_A$, which are purely infinite version of the asymptotic Ruelle algebras, with its commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(\bar{X}_A)$ and the canonical torus actions $γ^A$ are complete invariants for topological conjugacy of two-sided topological Markov shifts. We then have a computable topological conjugacy invariant, written in terms of the underlying matrix, of a two-sided topological Markov shift by using K-theory of the extended Ruelle algebra. The diagonal action of $γ^A$ has a unique KMS-state on ${\widetilde{\mathcal{R}}}_A$, which is an extension of the Parry measure on $\bar{X}_A$.

State splitting, strong shift equivalence and stable isomorphism of Cuntz-Krieger algebras

We prove that if two nonnegative matrices are strong shift equivalent, the associated stable Cuntz-Krieger algebras with generalized gauge actions are conjugate. The proof is done by a purely functional analytic method and based on constructing imprimitivity bimodule from bipartite directed graphs through strong shift equivalent matrices, so that we may clarify K-theoretic behavior of the stable conjugacy between the associated stable Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We also examine our machinery for the matrices obtained by state splitting graphs, so that topological conjugacy of the topological Markov shifts is described in terms of some equivalence relation of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras with canonical masas and the gauge actions without stabilization.

Relative Morita equivalence of Cuntz--Krieger algebras and flow equivalence of topological Markov shifts

In this paper, we will introduce notions of relative version of imprimitivity bimodules and relative version of strong Morita equivalence for pairs of $C^*$-algebras $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{D})$ such that $\mathcal{D}$ is a $C^*$-subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}$ with certain conditions. We will then prove that two pairs $(\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{D}_1)$ and $(\mathcal{A}_2, \mathcal{D}_2)$ are relatively Morita equivalent if and only if their relative stabilizations are isomorphic. In particularly, for two pairs $(\mathcal{O}_A, \mathcal{D}_A)$ and $(\mathcal{O}_B, \mathcal{D}_B)$ of Cuntz--Krieger algebras with their canonical masas, they are relatively Morita equivalent if and only if their underlying two-sided topological Markov shifts $(\bar{X}_A,\barσ_A)$ and $(\bar{X}_B,\barσ_B)$ are flow equivalent. We also introduce a relative version of the Picard group ${\operatorname{Pic}}(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{D})$ for the pair $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{D})$ of $C^*$-algebras and study them for the Cuntz--Krieger pair $(\mathcal{O}_A, \mathcal{D}_A)$.

Full groups of Cuntz-Krieger algebras and Higman-Thompson groups

In this paper, we will study presentations of the continuous full group $Γ_A$ of a one-sided topological Markov shift $(X_A,σ_A)$ for an irreducible matrix $A$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$ as a generalization of Higman-Thompson groups $V_N, 1<N \in {\mathbb{N}}$. We will show that the group $Γ_A$ can be represented as a group $Γ_A^{\operatorname{tab}}$ of matrices, called $A$-adic tables, with entries in admissible words of the shift space $X_A$, and a group $Γ_A^{\operatorname{PL}}$ of right continuous piecewise linear functions, called $A$-adic PL functions, on $[0,1]$ with finite singularities.

Imprimitivity bimodules of Cuntz--Krieger algebras and strong shift equivalences of matrices

In this paper, we will introduce a notion of basis related Morita equivalence in the Cuntz--Krieger algebras $({\mathcal{O}_A}, \{S_a\}_{a \in E_A})$ with the canonical right finite basis $\{S_a\}_{a \in E_A}$ as Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule, and prove that two nonnegative irreducible matrices $A$ and $B$ are elementary equivalent, that is, $A = CD, B = DC$ for some nonnegative rectangular matrices $C, D$, if and only if the Cuntz--Krieger algebras $({\mathcal{O}_A}, \{S_a\}_{a \in E_A})$ and $({\mathcal{O}_B}, \{ S_b\}_{b\in E_B})$ with the canonical right finite bases are basis relatedly elementary Morita equivalent.

Topological conjugacy of topological Markov shifts and Cuntz-Krieger algebras

For an irreducible non-permutation matrix $A$, the triplet $({\mathcal{O}_A},{\mathcal{D}_A},ρ^A)$ for the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\mathcal{O}_A}$, its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebra ${\mathcal{D}_A}$, and its gauge action $ρ^A$ is called the Cuntz-Krieger triplet. We introduce a notion of strong Morita equivalence in the Cuntz-Krieger triplets, and prove that two Cuntz-Krieger triplets $({\mathcal{O}_A},{\mathcal{D}_A},ρ^A)$ and $({\mathcal{O}_B},{\mathcal{D}_B},ρ^B)$ are strong Morita equivalent if and only if $A$ and $B$ are strong shift equivalent. We also show that the generalized gauge actions on the stabilized Cuntz-Krieger algebras are cocycle conjugate if the underlying matrices are strong shift equivalent. By clarifying K-theoretic behavior of the cocycle conjugacy, we investigate a relationship between cocycle conjugacy of the gauge actions on the stabilized Cuntz-Krieger algebras and topological conjugacy of the underlying topological Markov shifts.

A short note on Cuntz splice from a viewpoint of continuous orbit equivalence of topological Markov shifts

Let $A$ be an $N\times N$ irreducible matrix with entries in $\{0,1\}$. We present an easy way to find an $(N+3)\times (N+3)$ irreducible matrix $\bar{A}$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$ such that their Cuntz--Krieger algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_A$ and ${\mathcal{O}}_{\bar{A}}$ are isomorphic and $ \det(1 -A) = - \det(1-\bar{A}). $ As a consequence, we know that two Cuntz--Krieger algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_A$ and ${\mathcal{O}}_B$ are isomorphic if and only if the one-sided topological Markov shift $(X_A, σ_A)$ is continuously orbit equivalent to $(X_B, σ_B)$ or $(X_{\bar{B}}, σ_{\bar{B}}).$
