Kinematic Structure of Molecular Gas around High-mass Star YSO, Papillon Nebula, in N159 East in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present the ALMA Band 3 and Band 6 results of 12CO(2-1), 13$CO(2-1), H30alpha recombination line, free-free emission around 98 GHz, and the dust thermal emission around 230 GHz toward the N159 East Giant Molecular Cloud (N159E) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). LMC is the nearest active high-mass star forming face-on galaxy at a distance of 50 kpc and is the best target for studing high-mass star formation. ALMA observations show that N159E is the complex of filamentary clouds with the width and length of ~1 pc and 5 pc - 10 pc, respectively. The total molecular mass is 0.92 x 10^5 Msun from the 13CO(2-1) intensity. N159E harbors the well-known Papillon Nebula, a compact high-excitation HII region. We found that a YSO associated with the Papillon Nebula has the mass of 35 Msun and is located at the intersection of three filamentary clouds. It indicates that the formation of the high-mass YSO was induced by the collision of filamentary clouds. Fukui et al. 2015 reported a similar kinematic structure toward a YSO in the N159 West region which is another YSO that has the mass larger than 35 Msun in these two regions. This suggests that the collision of filamentary clouds is a primary mechanism of high-mass star formation. We found a small molecular hole around the YSO in Papillon Nebula with sub-pc scale. It is filled by free-free and H30alpha emission. Temperature of the molecular gas around the hole reaches ~ 80 K. It indicates that this YSO has just started the distruction of parental molecular cloud.

A quality check of the $AKARI$ mid-infrared all-sky diffuse map toward the massive star-forming regions NGC 6334 and NGC 6357

We present a comparative study of CO and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission toward a region including the massive star-forming regions of NGC 6334 and NGC 6357. We use the NANTEN $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1--0) data and the $AKARI$ 9 $μ$m All-Sky diffuse map in order to evaluate the calibration accuracy of the $AKARI$ data. We confirm that the overall CO distribution shows a good spatial correspondence with the PAH emission, and their intensities exhibit a good power-law correlation with a spatial resolution down to 4$'$ over the region of 10$^\circ$$\times$10$^\circ$. We also reveal poorer correlation for small scale structures between the two quantities toward NGC 6357, due to strong UV radiation from local sources. Larger scatter in the correlation toward NGC 6357 indicates higher ionization degree and/or PAH excitation than that of NGC 6334.

High-mass star formation triggered by collision between CO filaments in N159 West in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We have carried out 13CO(J=2-1) observations of the active star-forming region N159 West in the LMC with ALMA. We have found that the CO distribution at a sub-pc scale is highly elongated with a small width. These elongated clouds called "filaments" show straight or curved distributions with a typical width of 0.5-1.0pc and a length of 5-10pc. All the known infrared YSOs are located toward the filaments. We have found broad CO wings of two molecular outflows toward young high-mass stars in N159W-N and N159W-S, whose dynamical timescale is ~10^4 yrs. This is the first discovery of protostellar outflow in external galaxies. For N159W-S which is located toward an intersection of two filaments we set up a hypothesis that the two filaments collided with each other ~10^5 yrs ago and triggered formation of the high-mass star having ~37 Mo. The colliding clouds show significant enhancement in linewidth in the intersection, suggesting excitation of turbulence in the shocked interface layer between them as is consistent with the magneto-hydro-dynamical numerical simulations (Inoue & Fukui 2013). This turbulence increases the mass accretion rate to ~6x10^-4 Mo yr^-1, which is required to overcome the stellar feedback to form the high-mass star.

HI, CO, and Planck/IRAS dust properties in the high-latitude-cloud complex, MBM 53, 54, 55 and HLCG 92-35; Possible evidence for an optically thick HI envelope around the CO clouds

We present an analysis of the HI and CO gas in conjunction with the Planck/IRAS submillimeter/far-infrared dust properties toward the most outstanding high latitude clouds MBM 53, 54, 55 and HLCG 92-35 at b = -30 deg to -45 deg. The CO emission, dust opacity at 353 GHz (tau353), and dust temperature (Td) show generally good spatial correspondence. On the other hand, the correspondence between the HI emission and the dust properties is less clear than in CO. The integrated HI intensity WHI and tau353 show a large scatter with a correlation coefficient of ~0.6 for a Td range from 16 K to 22 K. We find, however, that WHI and tau353 show better correlation for smaller ranges of Td every 0.5 K, generally with a correlation coefficient of 0.7-0.9. We set up a hypothesis that the HI gas associated with the highest Td >= 21.5 K is optically thin, whereas the HI emission is generally optically thick for Td lower than 21.5 K. We have determined a relationship for the optically thin HI gas between atomic hydrogen column density and tau353, NHI (cm-2) = (1.5 x 10^26) x tau353, under the assumption that the dust properties are uniform and we have applied this to estimate NHI from tau353 for the whole cloud. NHI was then used to solve for Ts and tauHI over the region. The result shows that the HI is dominated by optically thick gas having a low spin temperature of 20-40 K and a density of 40-160 cm-3. The HI envelope has a total mass of ~1.2 x 10^4 Msol, an order of magnitude larger than that of the CO clouds. The HI envelope properties derived by this method do not rule out a mixture of HI and H2 in the dark gas, but we present indirect evidence that most of the gas mass is in the atomic state.

ALMA observations of a high-density core in Taurus: dynamical gas interaction at the possible site of a multiple star formation

Starless dense cores eventually collapse dynamically, which forms protostars inside them, and the physical properties of the cores determine the nature of the forming protostars. We report ALMA observations of dust continuum emission and molecular rotational lines toward MC27 or L1521F, which is considered to be very close to the first protostellar core phase. We found a few starless high-density cores, one of which has a very high density of ~10^7 cm^-3, within a region of several hundred AU around a very low-luminosity protostar detected by Spitzer. A very compact bipolar outflow with a dynamical timescale of a few hundred years was found toward the protostar. The molecular line observation shows several cores with an arc-like structure, possibly due to the dynamical gas interaction. These complex structures revealed in the present observations suggest that the initial condition of star formation is highly dynamical in nature, which is considered to be a key factor in understanding fundamental issues of star formation such as the formation of multiple stars and the origin of the initial mass function of stars.

Lupus I Observations from the 2010 Flight of the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry

The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol) was created by adding polarimetric capability to the BLAST experiment that was flown in 2003, 2005, and 2006. BLASTPol inherited BLAST's 1.8 m primary and its Herschel/SPIRE heritage focal plane that allows simultaneous observation at 250, 350, and 500 μm. We flew BLASTPol in 2010 and again in 2012. Both were long duration Antarctic flights. Here we present polarimetry of the nearby filamentary dark cloud Lupus I obtained during the 2010 flight. Despite limitations imposed by the effects of a damaged optical component, we were able to clearly detect submillimeter polarization on degree scales. We compare the resulting BLASTPol magnetic field map with a similar map made via optical polarimetry (The optical data were published in 1998 by J. Rizzo and collaborators.). The two maps partially overlap and are reasonably consistent with one another. We compare these magnetic field maps to the orientations of filaments in Lupus I, and we find that the dominant filament in the cloud is approximately perpendicular to the large-scale field, while secondary filaments appear to run parallel to the magnetic fields in their vicinities. This is similar to what is observed in Serpens South via near-IR polarimetry, and consistent with what is seen in MHD simulations by F. Nakamura and Z. Li.

The first ALMA view of IRAS 16293-2422: Direct detection of infall onto source B and high-resolution kinematics of source A

Aims: We focus on the kinematical properties of a proto-binary to study the infall and rotation of gas towards its two protostellar components. Methods: We present ALMA Science Verification observations with high-spectral resolution of IRAS 16293-2422 at 220.2 GHz. The wealth of molecular lines in this source and the very high spectral resolution offered by ALMA allow us to study the gas kinematics with unprecedented detail. Results: We present the first detection of an inverse P-Cygni profile towards source B in the three brightest lines. The line profiles are fitted with a simple two-layer model to derive an infall rate of 4.5x10^-5 Msun/yr. This infall detection would rule-out the previously suggested possibility that source B is a T Tauri star. A position velocity diagram for source A shows evidence for rotation with an axis close to the line-of-sight.

Toward Understanding the Origin of Turbulence in Molecular Clouds: Small Scale Structures as Units of Dynamical Multi-Phase Interstellar Medium

In order to investigate the origin of the interstellar turbulence, detailed observations in the CO J=1--0 and 3--2 lines have been carried out in an interacting region of a molecular cloud with an HII region. As a result, several 1,000 to 10,000 AU scale cloudlets with small velocity dispersion are detected, whose systemic velocities have a relatively large scatter of a few km/s. It is suggested that the cloud is composed of small-scale dense and cold structures and their overlapping effect makes it appear to be a turbulent entity as a whole. This picture strongly supports the two-phase model of turbulent medium driven by thermal instability proposed previously. On the surface of the present cloud, the turbulence is likely to be driven by thermal instability following ionization shock compression and UV irradiation. Those small scale structures with line width of ~ 0.6 km/s have a relatively high CO line ratio of J=3--2 to 1--0, 1 < R(3-2/1-0) < 2. The large velocity gradient analysis implies that the 0.6 km/s width component cloudlets have an average density of 10^{3-4} cm^{-3}, which is relatively high at cloud edges, but their masses are only < 0.05 M_{sun}.

The Molecular Outflows in the rho Ophiuchi Main Cloud: Implications For Turbulence Generation

We present the results of CO (J=3-2) and CO (J=1-0) mapping observations toward the active cluster forming clump, L1688, in the rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud. From the CO (J=3-2) and CO (J=1-0) data cubes, we identify five outflows, whose driving sources are VLA 1623, EL 32, LFAM 26, EL 29, and IRS 44. Among the identified outflows, the most luminous outflow is the one from the prototypical Class 0 source, VLA 1623. We also discover that the EL 32 outflow located in the Oph B2 region has very extended blueshifted and redshifted lobes with wide opening angles. This outflow is most massive and have the largest momentum among the identified outflows in the CO (J=1-0) map. We estimate the total energy injection rate due to the molecular outflows identified by the present and previous studies to be about 0.2 L_solar, larger than or at least comparable to the turbulence dissipation rate [~(0.03 - 0.1) L_solar]. Therefore, we conclude that the protostellar outflows are likely to play a significant role in replenishing the supersonic turbulence in this clump.

Search for Remnant Clouds Associated with the TW Hya Association

We report on a search for the parental molecular clouds of the TW Hya association (TWA), using CO emission and Na I absorption lines. TWA is the nearest young (~ 50 pc; ~ 10 Myr) stellar association, yet in spite of its youth, there are no detection of any associated natal molecular gas, as is the case for other typical young clusters. Using infrared maps as a guide, we conducted a CO cloud survey toward a region with a dust extinction of E(B-V) > 0.2 mag, or AV > 0.6 mag. CO emission is detected toward three IR dust clouds, and we reject one cloud from the TWA, as no interstellar Na absorption was detected from the nearby Hipparcos stars, implying that it is too distant to be related. The other two clouds exhibit only faint and small-scale CO emission. Interstellar Na I absorptions of Hipparcos targets, HIP 57809, HIP 64837, and HIP 64925 (at distances of 133, 81, and 101 pc, respectively) by these couds is also detected. We conclude that only a small fraction of the interstellar matter (ISM) toward the IR dust cloud is located at distance less than 100 pc, which may be all that is left of the remnant clouds of TWA; the remaining remnant cloud having dissipated in the last ~ 1 Myr. Such a short dissipation timescale may be due to an external perturbation or kinematic segregation that has a large stellar proper motion relative to the natal cloud.

Large Scale CO Observations of a Far-Infrared Loop in Pegasus; Detection of a Large Number of Very Small Molecular Clouds Possibly Formed via Shocks

We have carried out large scale 12CO and 13CO observations with a mm/sub-mm telescope NANTEN toward a loop-like structure in far infrared whose angular extent is about 20x20 degrees around (l, b) ~ (109, -45) in Pegasus. The 12CO distribution is found to consist of 78 small clumpy clouds whose masses range from 0.04 Mo to 11 Mo. About 83% of the 12CO clouds have very small masses less than 1.0 Mo. 13CO emission shown in the 19 of the 78 12CO clouds was detected in the region where the column density of H2 derived from 12CO is greater than 5x10(20) cm(-2), corresponding to Av of ~ 1 mag, which takes into account that of HI. We find no indication of star formation in these clouds in IRAS and 2MASS Point Source Catalogs. The very low mass clouds, M < 1 Mo, identified are unusual in the sense that they have very weak 12CO peak temperature of 0.5 K to 2.7 K and that they aggregate in a region of a few pc with no main massive clouds of ~ 100 Mo. A comparison with a theoretical work on molecular cloud formation (Koyama & Inutsuka 2002) suggests that the very low-mass clouds may have been formed in the shocked layer through the thermal instability. The star HD886 (B2IV) may be the source of the mechanical luminosity via stellar winds to create shocks, forming the loop-like structure where the very low-mass clouds are embedded.

Molecular Clouds Around a Run-away O Star, zeta Oph

Molecular clouds around a run-away O star z Oph have been surveyed with NANTEN telescope and their streaming motion caused by z Oph has been detected. z Oph is the earliest member of the Sco OB2 association and is a runaway star rapidly moving with an HII region, S27. We detected 2 major filamentary cloud complexes; one including L156 (L156 complex) is lying across nearly the center of S27, and the other one (L204 complex) is located near the eastern edge of S27. Total masses of them traced by the 12CO are 520 Mo and 1110 Mo, respectively. Denser cloud cores detected in C18O are locally distributed on the near side of the L204 complex to z Oph, and lower density gas traced by 12CO spreads toward the opposite side. Both complexes have radial velocity shifts that are correlated with the gas density. These spatial and velocity structures can be interpreted as follows; (1) the L156 complex is stuck on the expanding Stromgrem sphere and has been accelerated, (2) the gas in L204 complex was compressed and has also been accelerated outward by z Oph, resulting the radial velocity shifts of diffuse low-density gas relative to the dense cores embedded in the clouds. These density and velocity structures indicate dynamical interaction between the HII region and the molecular clouds. The cloud complexes are divided into 7 clouds by intensity distributions. In order to investigate the acceleration mechanism, we calculated momentum and kinetic energy for each cloud. They range from 60 to 800 Mo km/s and from 0.9 to 21 times 10^45 erg, respectively. We examined the effects of the stellar wind and photo evaporation by UV field of z Oph and found that the stellar wind can hardly input the momentum during the crossing time of the movement of z Oph. UV radiation seems to be a more likely origin of the streaming gas motion.
